When you’re heavily involved in social media, you will see all types of individuals – those who use it for self-promotion, business sales, friendships… and those who use it to judge and comment negatively on other people.

It can reach a point when you’re almost afraid to express an opinion, even something minor that really isn’t very significant in the larger scheme of things. It could simply be an observation or passing thought that you share innocently, probably naively, on a social media platform – only to be completely ripped apart for it.

Tsk tsk! How could you write/share that?! How horrible of you!!! Soon enough, an entire blog post will be written as a result of your Tweet or Facebook share.

Yes I know, when you put something out there on the internet, the reaction of others comes with the territory of using social media. Of course you’re already filtering yourself before putting something out there because you know the consequences. But sometimes isn’t enough, enough?

Social media is a great tool for non-profits to raise awareness for their causes and issues – also great for passionate people who do use social media for good. But for the everyday person who has no real cause or agenda and uses social media for fun, does everything have to be a cause?

To those who seem to make it their lifetime goal to challenge, judge and comment negatively on others’ perspectives and thoughts: enough with the holier than thou attitudes. I am almost certain that we’ve all been a hypocrite – gasp! – at one point or another in our lifetimes. We’ve all made misjudgements and mistakes.

When you feel that you’re being ripped apart from some holier-than-thou perfectionist know-it-all, debate your heart away, if you wish – or simply walk away.

You will not change their minds – belief systems are deeply rooted. A conversation on Twitter or Facebook won’t make them see your point of view. Sometimes the best way of dealing with negative comments on social media is to be silent.

Those who do seem “above” everyone else in their crusade to prove their righteousness, step back before you decide to comment. Remember that there is someone on the other end of the screen.

To those who feel they are being ‘attacked’ by those holier-than-thou people, remember that sometimes the one who promotes breastfeeding may have a tin of formula in their cabinet. The person who promotes healthy living could be a closet bulimic. The one who advocates cancer awareness also drinks and smokes occasionally. The one who promotes organic everything works for a junk food company.

Knowing that more than likely they have their own flaws should make it easier to ignore the haters. Don’t take it to heart and don’t take it personally.

A few posts ago, I shared one of my favourite Greek recipes, a traditional soup called Fasolada (φασολάδα).

Here is yet another Greek soup that my mom used to make (and still does) all the time, mostly in the colder months of course. There is something magical about a chicken soup – healing properties and all – but this one seems to also warm the soul.

Chicken Soup Avgolemono (Egg Lemon)

Ingredients:

3-4 chicken breast with bone
2-3 carrots (cut into 2-3 pieces)
2 celery stalks (cut in half)
2-3 onions (leave whole if small, or cut in half)
1-2 eggs
1 cup rice
1 lemon, juice squeezed
1 tsp salt
Peppercorns (about six or so)

chicken soup avgolemono

Directions:

Boil chicken breast in a pot until cooked. Spoon away the foam. In same pot, add carrots, celery, onions, salt and peppercorns.  Cook until vegetables are tender.

Remove chicken and vegetables and put aside, leaving broth behind. Add more water to the pot reaching halfway and cook until boiling.  Add 1 cup rice.  Once rice is cooked, turn off the heat.

In a bowl, beat egg whites until foamy, into a meringue. Then beat in the yolks. Add lemon juice and beat.  Then add some broth and beat again.

Cut pieces of chicken into cubes or small pieces. Cut vegetables as well – if you want, use a hand blender to chop – and add to the pot with rice.

Then pour egg/lemon mixture into pot with rice.  Turn heat on for a few minutes until starting to boil and serve!

Listen up regular folks. Beyonce Knowles’ and Jay-Z’s one-year-old daughter Blue Ivy Carter is a smarty pants.

“She is hilarious and she is fire. Lord, am I going to have me a time!” Knowles told Oprah Winfrey on Oprah’s Next Chapter.

“She’s very smart. She’s already reading flashcards. She’s beautiful.”

A few tabloid magazines are turning up the snark by pointing out one little bit of Beyonce’s interview and calling her daughter a genius. I don’t know what’s more annoying — that Beyonce is actually saying her 13-month-old daughter is reading flashcards, or that Us Magazine and USA Today are saying she’s a brainiac?

One article says that Beyonce and Jay-Z are raising a prodigy. Is that being too snarky?

“My daughter introduced me to myself,” she told Oprah on the Feb. 16th episode of Oprah’s Next Chapter. “Motherhood made everything make sense.”

Now this is a very true statement that we can all agree on.

During the interview, Beyonce spoke about the miscarriage she suffered before conceiving Blue Ivy.

“I felt like there are so many couples that go through that and it was a big part of my story. It was one of the hardest things I’ve been through. It was one of the reasons I did not reveal that I was pregnant the second time,” she said. “You don’t know what’s going to happen. It was hard.”

Will she and Jay-Z have more kids?

“I definitely want to have another child. But it’s also important for me to do what I love. I love to make music. I wanted to see after I had my daughter, if I was still as passionate about performing,” she said. “Maybe after this next tour I’ll have another.”

Are the tabs being too harsh as usual, or is Beyonce bragging about her child?

I knew I had a couple of options this year for Valentine’s Day cards for the kids in my sons’ classes – pencils or candy. I opted for the pencils this year and figured I could tape them to a store-bought card and be done with it.

But this Valentine’s Day, my little one (who is not so little anymore, he just turned six) wanted to make his own Valentine’s Day cards for his friends. Although I’m not the crafty type, I cringed and unwillingly agreed.

So I quite shockingly came up with a fun Valentine’s Day card craft for kids:

vday card 2_552x979

Buy some construction paper in various shades of pink, red and/or purple. Cut out two sizes of hearts – one larger and one smaller in the different shades. Use a patterned edge scissor for either the outside or inside heart. This part is better left to the adult.

vday card 3_550x682

With a glue stick, glue the smaller heart into the larger heart. My son started the process but got tired after a while so I took over.

vday card 4_552x710

Have your child write their special message to their friend on the card. Then, using a hole punch, punch a whole at the top right corner of the heart twice – one beside the other, making room for a pencil to fit through the hole. Punch another hole at the bottom left corner.

vday card 5_504x598

Push a Valentine’s themed pencil through the top and bottom holes.

vday card 6_476x632

And there you have it. Martha Stewart over here deserves a real pat on the back…I’m not a crafty person at all but this was fairly easy.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

by Amanda DeGrace

With family day less then a week away there are many great events and happenings in the Ottawa area for Family Day. Wondering what to do Family Day weekend in Ottawa?

Whether you join in the fun for one day, or the full weekend, there is something for everyone.  Here are some of my top picks for spending Family Day weekend in Ottawa!

1.  Bust a Move Family Day Kids Camp at the Ottawa Athletic Club

This camp is for children ages 6-12 and runs on Monday February 18 from 9-4p.m. with before and after care also available.  This is a fantastic option for parents who still have to work and need to explore childcare options! Your child gets to explore within Ottawa’s premiere fitness club in a safe and fully supervised manner.

They will experience yoga, zumba, squash, tennis, swimming, crafts and MORE! Know what is even more fantastic? All money goes directly to the Ottawa Regional Cancer Society and parents receive a charitable tax donation receipt!

 2. Funatorium Explorium

Where else can you wall climb, joust, lego build, participate in obstacle courses, try out karate and yoga, attempt to beat a Guinness World Record and play with the whole family in one spot?!  This great event is back again in Ottawa for the second year in a row and is taking place at the Ernst & Young Centre on Uplands Drive.

There will be a ton of exhibitors with family friendly information to share with you but even more things for the children to do and play with.  Activity and fun will be everywhere!

3. Winterlude

Coming into its third and final weekend, the NCC’s Winterlude is extremely family friendly with tons to see and do.  Bundle up in your snowsuits and head over to Jacques Cartier Park in Gatineau for hours of snow sliding.  These snow slides are not just for the kids but grown ups enjoy the fun too!

Head over to Dows Lake to explore then skate down the Rideau Canal to downtown Ottawa.  Explore the ice sculptures at Confederation Park and end the day with a hot chocolate and of course a beavertail.  There are also many family friendly places to eat throughout the downtown core.

Enjoy some dinner in the Market, Sparks Street or Elgin Street.  The kids will be sure to sleep after this day long adventure!

Have a fun and safe family day weekend in Ottawa!

Lazy summer days, fun songs, popsicles and friends – summer camp is a place to make memories. My kids have been going to summer day camp in my town and they love it.

The camp counselors are teenagers so as you can imagine, they are full of energy and amazing spirit! The teens at my kids’ camp have cool nicknames like Koolaid and Flash. The boys have developed uch a fondness for them – and because many of them return year after year to work, the kids have really formed a special bond with them.

Swimming, running through the sprinkler, fun games and silly activities – now that beats hearing “I’m bored” every 10 minutes at home, now doesn’t it?!?

I love the songs that they learned at camp, songs that I remember when I was a kid like this one:

Swimming, swimming, in my swimming pool,

When days are hot when days are cool

In my swimming pool!

Front stroke, side stroke, fancy diving too!

Oh don’t you wish you never had anything else to do? But mmm, mmmm, in my swimming pool…

I am so looking forward to a break away from the daily routine!

Nothing beats a simple, chocolate chip cookie. This is a simple chocolate chip cookie recipe that you can easily add to – this time, I added some chopped walnut pieces for some extra crunch and protein!

Ingredients

½ cup unsalted butter, softened
¾ cup light brown sugar, packed
¼ cup granulated sugar
1 large egg
½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 1/4 cups flour
2 teaspoons cornstarch
1 tsp baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 cup chopped walnut pieces

chocolate chip cookies with walnuts

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. and line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Cream butter and sugars in a stand mixer until light and fluffy, about two minutes. Add egg, then vanilla. Add flour, cornstarch, baking soda, salt then chocolate chips and walnuts, mixing until combined.

Roll into balls or scoop dough onto prepared cookie sheet and press dough down to flatten slightly. Bake for 10 minutes (for softer cookies) or 12 minutes for firmer cookies.

I like softer, chewier cookies so 10 minutes is the perfect amount of time for baking. If you’re not a fan of walnuts, leave them out – or add 1 cup of chopped pecans or roasted hazelnuts instead.

Don’t forget the milk!
