It’s around 7:00 in our house. I’ve already walked the dog, and the kids are still in bed. Because I am trying to get healthy, I make us a huge smoothie. A banana, some flaxseed, spirulina, two big handfuls of spinach, blueberries, carrot juice. What a good mom I am, right?  I stand by the blender thinking, Holy crap, Jen. You are one righteous mom. Feeding your kids this – well, it’s almost like medicine, isn’t it?

I get to feel like this for about two minutes. Then the boys are awake. Every morning I am surprised again at the sheer size of them. I have 4 sons and 3 of them are over 6 feet tall. The smallest, my poor little runt, is only a shameful 5 foot 10. His brothers have asked me if I smoked during my pregnancy for him on account of his pygmy-like stature (he is 12 years old). I did not.

So here they all come, grumbling, hair sticking up in spikes. I hold out a glass of wonderful smoothie with a (possibly too bright) smile. They ignore me. Head for the pantry and pass along some strawberry Pop Tarts assembly line style, which is a bit of a consolation, I guess.  I mean, they are sharing with each other.  Then they wordlessly eat cold Pop Tarts over a paper towel.  And I am stuck drinking all 5 glasses of smoothie.

I bet you have a few questions now. First and foremost, if you’re trying to get healthy, why even have the Pop Tarts available?  I’ve thought about this myself. I think it’s mob mentality. There are just so many of them.  And there is only one of me. Plus, they are smart enough to never leave me alone at the grocery store. They take it in shifts to come with me when I buy food. Which is in itself suspicious. They hate shopping.

Why don’t I just make them drink the smoothies, you ask? If you are asking this question, your kids are still small and malleable. If you are asking this question, there is still hope for your children. I wish I’d been a smoothie-pusher when they were little. Back when they ate whatever I put in front of them. Unfortunately, I had my kids fairly young. Young enough to see my kids as less hairy puppies who needed to be rewarded with treats;

Did you go pee on the potty? Good boy, here’s a box of Smarties for you with a chicken McNugget chaser.

Did you get an award at school?  My goodness, Delissio pizzas all around!

So I’ve set the bar. They associate junk food with reward. Ergo, healthy food must be a punishment. Nothing hurts my youngest son’s feelings as much as being told to eat an apple. ‘But why?  What did I do??’

My advice? Get your kids young. Don’t use food to reward kids. My only hope now is that they marry some woman down the road who forces them to eat healthy food. I can just hear her now, ‘I can’t believe your mother fed you that crap!  What was she thinking…’

Losing a child is every parent’s nightmare.  It is a nightmare Tara and Todd Storch lived through. Three years ago their baby girl Taylor died after a terrible skiing accident in Colorado. It was supposed to be a fantastic family trip but it turned out to be the worst day of their lives. Taylor was only 13 years old.

Tara and Todd were faced with difficult days and difficult decisions ahead. They hoped their daughter would recover but that is not what happened. Taylor lost her life but Tara and Todd made a decision to make sure she outlived herself and decided to donate Taylor’s organs. Taylor’s gift of life saved the lives of five people.

The Storch’s share their story of life, loss and love in a new book called Taylor’s Gift. From the first page I knew it was going to be an emotional read and it was. The book takes you from the beginning of their journey with Taylor’s accident, through their heartbreaking grief and to their new found life purpose, spreading the message of organ donation through their foundation Taylor’s Gift.org.

Recently I got a chance to talk with Tara and Todd Storch about Taylor, their life and the book.  They were friendly and fun, even while talking about the most difficult days of their lives. I actually felt like I had known them for years, like I was talking with friends and that is one of the reasons the Storch’s story resonates with so many people. Their story could easily be your story, or my story. It could happen to any one of us.

taylor's gift

Organ donation is often not part of the conversation many of us have at home with our children and that was no different for the Storch’s. Tara admits it isn’t something they talked to their children about but she says it was something they had to do. “We knew in our heart because of the type of child Taylor was (such a giving, caring child) that that would be what she would want. We made that decision for her knowing in our hearts it was the right one”, says Tara.

“It was a privilege to be able to be asked that question of ‘will you choose to donate your daughter’s organs? She’s a beautiful candidate for this. Would you consider that?’” Tara says it was a privilege to be asked to donate Taylor’s organs.  It helped both Tara and Todd to know they weren’t losing Taylor completely, that she could live on in the lives of the people she was saving.

Taylor cover photo

Organ donation is more about life than death for Todd and Tara Storch. They are working to change the conversation about organ donation. “It’s not necessarily about death, it’s truly about life. There is good that can come out of bad things. It really is the love story that connects with people” says Todd.  “Just like life insurance it is a gift to those who are left behind. Organ donation is the same thing. It is truly a gift to a whole lot more people.”

Todd and Tara were able to meet four of the five people who received Taylor’s organs, including the woman who received Taylor’s heart. They write about meeting these people in their book. The recipients and their families have become like an extended family to the Storch’s. One of the most moving parts of the book is when Tara re-tells the story of the day she heard Taylor’s heart beating again, beating in the chest of a woman. It was so moving. It brought me to tears.

While the book is sad, it certainly did not leave me feeling sad. The book has an inspiring message of life, love, giving and hope.  There is hope in knowing the lives of five people and their families live on.

April is National Donate Life Month in the United States. Todd and Tara Storch hope by sharing their story you are inspired to find out more about organ donation and you register to be a donor. In the US, over 115,000 people are waiting for life-saving organs; however, 19 people a day die waiting for this gift.

Go to TaylorsGift.org for more information about the foundation, the book and how to be an organ donor in the United States.

Tara says there is a fun way for people to show their support for Taylor’s Gift. “OPI has partnered with us and created a Taylor Blue Colour this is exclusive for Taylor’s Gift Foundation” says Tara.

For a dollar a finger, $10, you can buy a bottle of OPI Taylor Blue nail polish and all the money will go to help support the foundation.  You can post your picture on social media with the hashtag #TaylorBlue to take part of the Paint It Forward campaign. Tara says it is a fun way to promote the foundation and raise awareness of organ donation.

In Canada, you can go to beadonor.ca to find out more about organ donation and register to be a donor.  According to the Trillium Gift of Life Network the province’s organ and tissue donation agency, there are over 1,500 Ontarians currently awaiting a transplant.

Reese Witherspoon pulled the “don’t you know you I am?!?” card to police after she and her husband were pulled over on Friday and arrested! GASP!

Witherspoon and her husband, Jim Toth, were arrested and briefly jailed after he was pulled over under suspicion of driving while intoxicated in Atlanta.

The police report stated,

“Mrs. Witherspoon asked, ‘Do you know my name?’ I answered, ‘No, I don’t need to know your name.’ I then added, ‘right now.’ Mrs. Witherspoon stated, ‘You’re about to find out who I am.’ ”

Whoa! Talk about using your celebrity and it backfiring!

Toth, 42, faces a DUI charge after driving in the wrong lane while the super clean-cut Witherspoon, 37, was arrested for disorderly conduct. She was handcuffed after disobeying instruction from the arresting officer to stay inside the vehicle.

Oh Reese! Why didn’t you just be a normal person and keep your mouth shut?

Through her rep, Witherspoon released this statement:

Out of respect for the ongoing legal situation, I cannot comment on everything that is being reported right now. But I do want to say, I clearly had one drink too many and I am deeply embarrassed about the things I said.  It was definitely a scary situation and I was frightened for my husband, but that is no excuse. I was disrespectful to the officer who was just doing his job. The words I used that night definitely do not reflect who I am. I have nothing but respect for the police and I’m very sorry for my behavior.

Oops! Despite how many drinks she had, do you think anyone should pull the celebrity card? Do you think this behaviour will tarnish Witherspoon’s reputation?

Spring is here! With the smell of freshness in the air and the sounds of birds chirping in the early hours, there is the urge to want to be outside more and stay outside. If this is true, then why not take your workouts outside too?

Now that the weather is looking promising, there is no better time to get your mojo moving and either move your same-ole, same-ole exercise regime to the great outdoors or start that routine you have been promising yourself “as soon as the weather warms up”. Spring means get exercise outdoors!

The world is your oyster! Or at least is a great buffet of possibilities. Here are 5 easy ways to bring your exercise outdoors, get some vitamin D and feel great.

Walking

Never underestimate the power of walking to not just enjoy the outdoors, but it’s a very functional way to exercise both for strength and cardiovascular health. But don’t mistake this for window shopping. Kick it up a notch, throw your iPod in and pound the pavement!

Stroller Classes

What’s better than exercising outdoors but doing spring outdoor exercises with your little one in tow? For those moms who want a little bit of this and a little bit of that, it’s a great way to meet other moms who may also be crawling out from the winter hibernation.

Boot Camp

One of the latest and cost effective trends to get a great workout with the support of others who are getting their butts kicked too! Following the idea of the army boot camp, these classes are NOT for beginners or new moms but once you are up to par, it’s a great way to challenge yourself.

The Park

Well whattya know! The park is an awesome place to get a workout in. Whether you use the monkey bars, the bench or create your own circuit, there is a reason why kids who run around outside are so lean and energetic. They are having fun and getting their exercise too!

Your Own Backyard

My personal favorite as this way I have privacy, can set up my program without worrying about bumping into someone and can blast the tunes too! Who said you need a gym when all you need is your body, some tubing, hand weights and you’re set!

Whatever you do, be sure to take advantage of this feel-good time of year because you know (I HATE to say it), it’s going to be gone before you know it.

Make the most of each day; add as much physical activity as you can so you can benefit from the many rewards. Now GO!

How do we talk to children about tragic events where lives were taken?

My six-year-old happened to be at my parent’s house when the terrible news came in – he caught on that a bomb had exploded in Boston. He told me about it at home and said he hopes they “catch the bad guys”.

On our way to school today, he seemed quite worried about the events – he again mentioned the bombing and asked if his cousins (who live in Connecticut) live anywhere near Boston, and asked if there would be bombs there too. I reassured him that our family is safe and that the police are investigating and will find out who did this.

How do I explain to my child that there are bad people in our world but they won’t harm our family? How can I make him feel better and worry too much about our safety? I told him that most people are good in this world and that the bad guys will be caught.

What more can I say without going into too much detail? Explaining tragedy to children can be difficult but there are ways parents can speak to their kids about it. I asked Dr. Deborah Deborah Gilboa of AskDoctorG.com to offer some advice:

1. Process your own emotions first. Our kids will have reactions, and it’s our job to help them with that. If we are still figuring out or expressing our own feelings strongly, that will be harder, and scarier for them.  We don’t have to pretend we’re not affected, but should get that first storm of reaction out of the way if we can, before talking to our kids.

2. Decide what your child is old enough and ready to understand. There are some great websites for help with this, including the American Academy of Pediatrics.

mr rogers

3. Keep your conversation short – let your children take it in and check back in later to see if they have questions or want to say anything.

4. Focus on the helpers. It’s a quote from Mr. Rogers a long time ago, but don’t forget to look for all the people who ran to help, all the marathoners who kept running after the race – right to the hospital to donate blood!

5. Be a helper. Look for something you and your kids can do to support the people who are suffering.

Are you part of a mommy group?

Well it’s good if you are – a study found joining a mommy group boosts a woman’s circle of friends.

Women who have just given birth add nine new local friends to their circle. The study found that before having a baby, women have a circle of 13 friends on average but that grows to 22 in the year after the baby’s birth.

Being a mom can be great for your social life. We all know that having a baby changes everything – and when you’re a first-time mom, moms typically bond with other new moms.

New mommy groups help new moms – they can support each other, offer emotional and practical support.

The study, by Natures Purest, found that 53 per cent of new mothers felt it was surprisingly easy to make friends after having a baby, and 70 per cent of those said it was because they had so much “in common”.

Strong bonds are created almost instantly amid exchanges of views, hints and tips on subjects such as childcare plans, illness and how to get baby sleeping through the night.

Women who joined a “mommy club” when their children were young keep those friends throughout their life – and their children do too.

Nearly half of new moms made friends with other women at a mom and tot group. Four in 10 said they felt more comfortable sharing intimate and personal information with their new friends.

80 per cent of the women polled say they poured their heart out about their worry of being a good mother and the guilt over whether to go back to work after maternity leave.

This past weekend, my family and I enjoyed a lovely dinner at the neighbourhood pizza parlour, bought some delectable treats from the bakery down the street and rented movies from the guy who has owned his shop for 11 years.

Oprahhhhhhhhhh!

That was my reaction when I received the invitation from Christine Magee of Sleep Country Canada to be one of her VIP guests to see Oprah live in Hamilton.

Sleep Country Canada presented Oprah in Hamilton at the Copps Coliseum on Saturday, April 13, 2013. I, along with fellow bloggers and friends Maria @BoredMommy, Lena @listen2lena, Diana @teachermomoftwo and Shannon @shasherslife, were Christine’s guests.

oprah live in hamilton

What a night to remember!

We had the opportunity to be backstage to meet and greet Oprah and have a photo take with the legend herself:

Me and Oprah

I had my 15 seconds – literally – with Oprah and while it happened so quickly, I managed to tell her what an honour it was to meet her and that I love her. Cheesy right?

I’ve met my share of celebs but Oprah is one with whom I was star struck. This woman I’m touching and smiling with has been a part of my family room for years… I’ve learned from her and her guests and have been inspired by her over the years. Not to mention this woman standing next to me is stinkin’ rich!

Because I’ve been following her and many of her guests for years, much of what she presented at her event I’ve learned and practice (for the most part!), and reiterate what I know to be true to live happily. But hearing it from her standing feet away from me, and even speaking directly TO ME (yes she sure did!), was something I will never forget. It was absolutely amazing to hear her speak about her life – she is so engaging and funny!

Listen to your intuition

I’ve always been a firm believer in trusting your instincts. We all have the ability – it’s just a matter of being silent enough to hear those whispers and to feel your gut.

Oprah talked about it and how we are first touched by a whisper – if we don’t listen to that soft voice, the whisper will grow into a pebble.

an evening with oprah

Know your purpose

Who are you? What is your purpose? We all have roles – we’re mothers, sisters, daughters, teachers, but who are you?

“I am a whisper on the breath of God,” says Oprah.  “Nothing is happening out of order – you are co-creating your life.”

Everybody needs to find a purpose. What’s your purpose?

Nothing is happening out of order.

You are co-creating your life with the Divine. For every cause there is an effect –  for every action, thought, feeling is motivated by an intention.

Gratitude

Be grateful – pretty simple. I like to thank God every day for all of my blessings. Give thanks to the universe.

Love After Love by Derek Walcott

The time will come

when, with elation

you will greet yourself arriving

at your own door, in your own mirror

and each will smile at the other’s welcome,

and say, sit here. Eat.

You will love again the stranger who was your self.

Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart

to itself, to the stranger who has loved you

all your life, whom you ignored

for another, who knows you by heart.

Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,

the photographs, the desperate notes,

peel your own image from the mirror.

Sit. Feast on your life.

Kmart’s newest commercial is going viral – not because of a product it’s selling or a big sale – but for its fabulous catchphrase.

The new ad features shocked and pleasantly surprised shoppers who learn that that free shipping is available on all products – including pants.

Say it with me – “ship my pants.” A few times… funny right?

Or offensive? Nah! It’s damn funny and a risky thing for Kmart to do.

But it works. The video has gone viral.
