No! Not my child, he would never do something like that.

Are you that parent who thinks their kid is an angel all the time? Well behaved, friendly and gentle around other kids? Your toddler has never ever hit before, never!

Or as an older kid, doesn’t talk back, has amazing manners and always says the right things?

Yeah I thought so.

Perhaps it’s time to stop the smug attitude that your children would never do something like that or do anything wrong because of your perfect parenting.

Gasp! Oh no, not MY child!

A 2010 study in the U.S. says that 96 percent of the nation’s parents think their kids are pretty well-behaved.  Can you say, DENIAL???

No child is 100% perfect. Everyone makes mistakes. So any parent who says “my child would never ever do that” is deluding themselves.

It’s natural for parents to see their children as perfect, especially when they are young. Parents want the best for their children, and it can be easy to overlook their flaws or mistakes. However, it’s important for parents to maintain a realistic perspective and not let their love for their children blind them to potential areas for improvement.

Take an honest look in the mirror.

Most parents are not willing to admit then that their child doesn’t always behave as an angel. They do really think they have the perfect kid and will not accept that they can do wrong. Or they simply could be turning a blind eye, pretending like they don’t see the misbehaviour.

When parents think their kids are perfect, it can create unrealistic expectations and put a lot of pressure on the child to live up to those expectations. This can be especially problematic when the child encounters challenges or setbacks, as they may feel like they’ve let their parents down or that they’re not good enough.

The pitfalls

These parents could be setting their kids up for a big fall. I can understand that parents want to protect their child from failure and disappointment. But in doing so, they fail to realize that those are often the most valuable lessons they could learn.

It’s also important for those parents to admit when their child is in the wrong, take the opportunity and turn it into a positive by teaching them how to change their behaviour.

It’s important for parents to recognize that their children are human and therefore, not perfect. They should celebrate their children’s strengths, but also help them identify areas for improvement and support them in working on those areas. By doing so, parents can help their children develop a healthy sense of self-esteem and resilience, which will serve them well throughout their lives.

Have you ever come across parents who think their children can do no wrong? How did you deal with it?

I love where I live – north of Toronto (a sub-suburb I would say) – a family-oriented hockey town close enough to the city, but with a small town feel. What I love even more is that I don’t have to go shopping in the city if I don’t want to!

I can find all of the fashion-forward brands that I love at Upper Canada Mall in Newmarket, the best shopping mall north of Toronto. Since the renovations and revamping of the mall, many new fabulous trendy and upscale stores have opened their doors.

With brands like Coach, Michael Kors, M by Mendocino, Browns and Lululemon, I can shop for the latest fashion and trends all in one destination. Did I mention the mall also has The Bay, Sephora, Aldo, Victoria’s Secret, Disney, Target and an Apple store? Not to mention Sears, Toys R Us and Roots.

The selection of stores at Upper Canada Mall offers something for everyone; from Gap and Old Navy to Aeropostale and Aritzia, young trend-setters can shop to their heart’s desire alongside older folks. I love that the mall also has boutique-style stores like Rudsak, Simon Chang and the fabulous Eeva & Eve. Upper Canada Mall really has become the area’s fashion destination for stylish women looking for exciting brands.

Upper Canada Mall

The mall launched a brand new glossy magazine entitled Gorgeous this past fall (spring/summer issue out soon) which is also available online, along with a fashion/lifestyle blog. They really have covered it all!

The mall is very child-friendly; there are family washrooms available and even the men’s washrooms have change tables! The mall hosts stroller walks for parents twice a week with a fitness instructor (free of charge!). Bottle warmers and microwaves are available at guest services for parents and fire-truck strollers can be rented at main entrances.

Upper Canada Mall is very much involved in organizing community events and partnerships as well, including Southlake Regional Health Centre. During school breaks, there is always something going on for kids – this past March Break, the mall hosted Zoo to You where kids were able to get up close and personal with a baby alligator, tarantula and snakes!

Bloggers and media are talking about the mommy wars again and naturally, I have to say “oh come on!”

You just have to wonder if media are creating these labels – is it their own fault for rehashing the term “mommy wars”?  Are media regurgitating content just for page views or are these mom blogger wars really still going on?

I’ve been a work-at-home mom since I had both of my children. Now when my kids were younger, I do think I may have been looked at differently because of my choices. I breastfed, co-slept, held my baby most of the time. Looking back, I’m sure I was judged and I likely judged others too. But I quickly came to realize that our choices as mothers – as WOMEN – are personal choices and no one has the right to judge.  Everyone does what is best for their family and frankly, that’s nobody else’s business.

Now that my kids are in school and I’m out of the baby/toddler stage, I’m so out of the loop, I wonder – is this still happening?

People are talking about the Mommy Wars – yet again – and I have to wonder, are women not supporting one another? Or is the media to blame for the term, Mommy Wars?

Tell me readers, are the “mommy wars” real? Or just a term coined by media?

By the way, More Magazine conducted a survey and will be out soon… how many parents were actually surveyed, I don’t know.

I love shopping at local shops, bakeries, cafés and restaurants; there is something to be said about that individual, personal touch that comes along with shopping small business. Knowing that you’re supporting the local economy and more than likely supporting a family-run business feels really good.

Local, independent shops add flavor and culture to our communities, reflecting the vibrancy and diversity of our cities. What would your day-to-day be like without Frank the butcher or the little ice cream parlour down the street? Small businesses make up 98 per cent of businesses in Canada!

This is why I think what American Express Canada is doing with their brand new program called Shop Small is fabulous. The Shop Small program supports entrepreneurial spirit and celebrates the role of small business in our communities which plays a huge role in driving our economy.

I’m happy to be working with American Express Canada in highlighting some of the participating merchants in Toronto and by pledging to #ShopSmall at small businesses in our neighbourhoods. I’ll be sharing my experience on my social media channels including Twitter, Facebook and Instagram and hope you will join me by shopping small and spreading the word!

American Express is also launching an exciting Toronto’s Neighbourhood Gems contest in support of the program!  Visit the American Express Canada Facebook page and search for your favourite Shop Small business in Toronto on a map.  Then vote for your favourite small business once per day from April 1 – 21; each vote also earns you one entry into a daily draw to win a $50 Amex Gift Card.

The top five businesses with the most votes by April 21 will participate in a final round of voting; you can vote from the top from April 29 to May 5. The small business who wins the contest and is crowned Toronto’s Neighbourhood Gem will win a one-on-one social marketing consultation with Facebook Canada, an American Express Toronto Life Advertorial on their business in Toronto Life magazine and a celebratory event to honour the winning small business!  The other top four businesses will win a social marketing roundtable with Facebook Canada and a mention of their business in Toronto Life magazine.

Word of mouth is the #1 way  Canadians find or learn about small businesses in their neighbourhood.  Follow me and the conversation using #ShopSmall starting April 2 and participate by shopping small and supporting local businesses. Also don’t forget to vote for your favourite Shop Small business in the Neighbourhood Gems contest.

Off I go to my local bakery to get a latte!

What I love about Dove is that they represent real women in their advertising – not celebrities, actors or models. They refuse to alter the appearance of women in their campaigns, which promotes “real beauty.”

I’m also a fan of their moisturizing products. I had the opportunity to try Dove Deep Moisture Nourishing Body Wash – a new line that contains Nutrium Moisture, which includes a hydrating mix of oils and other ingredients.

I usually use bar soap in the shower, as I find many of the body washes out there either have harsh perfumes or don’t lather enough. The Deep Moisture Body Wash has a light fragrance that’s fresh but not overpowering. When applied to the skin it feels like you’re putting on body lotion because the body wash is thick like a moisturizer.

Dove Deep Moisture body wash

With soybean oil and sunflower oil, the new body wash hydrates the top layer of your skin rather than stripping the oils from it, making your skin feel moisturized. I have pretty dry skin so I have to moisturize right after I come out of the shower regardless of what soap or wash I’m using.

You don’t need to use a lot of product either; the wash lathers nicely – not too much but not too little, just the right amount. It lathers well enough for me to also shave which is a bonus – I don’t usually like to use shaving creams.

My wallet also loves the price; it’s affordable and available at major grocery stores.

Introducing a new, breakthrough body wash from Dove. New, improved Dove® Deep Moisture combines a blend of our mildest cleansers ever and NutriumMoisture®, our rich blend of nutrients naturally found in your skin which effectively nourishes deep down. This is our PROVEN best care. Head to our Facebook  page today for a $2-off coupon & tell us why you want to make the switch?

Victoria’s Secret is the latest company to be slammed for targeting tween girls. The “Bright Young Things” spring break campaign for the company’s popular PINK line has parents outraged because of their racy undergarments which they believe targets pre-teenagers.

The slogans on the underwear such as “Feeling lucky” and “Call me” have crossed the line according to parents who feel they are marketing to younger girls. These garments are sexually suggestive and it’s irresponsible for the company to market to girls this way.

Victoria’s Secret responded on their Facebook Page:

“In response to questions we recently received, Victoria’s Secret PINK is a brand for college-aged women. Despite recent rumors, we have no plans to introduce a collection for younger women. “Bright Young Things” was a slogan used in conjunction with the college spring break tradition.”

That would be fine if it were believed, but the company’s CFO Stuart Burgdoerfer recently said:

“When somebody’s 15 or 16 years old, what do they want to be? They want to be older, and they want to be cool like the girl in college, and that’s part of the magic of what we do at PINK.”

So there you go – pretty much an admission that tweens and teens want to wear PINK and Victoria’s Secret’s PINK line is also targeting younger girls.

I can hear those that say – “well parents shouldn’t buy the clothing then”. But if it’s not available for sale, girls wouldn’t buy it. Let’s not forget about the peer pressure tweens and teens feel – “well my friends wear it, why can’t I?”

This is when parents step in and take the opportunity to teach their kids. Yes there will be some parents who do shop with their tween at PINK and that is questionable in itself. But for those parents who don’t feel it appropriate, don’t allow it.

victoria's secret young things line

Society today is so sexualized and it’s unfortunate that large companies like VS feed off that – they continue the sexualization of young girls because they think there is a market for it.

Girls shouldn’t need to feel that pressure to grow up so quickly. They don’t need to think that sex defines beauty. This type of advertising negatively affects young girls. They are led to believe that sex appeal equals beauty.

The problem is, there is a market for this type of clothing and that’s what really disturbs me. As long as there is a market, these companies will still continue to sell. I’m reading on Facebook that moms of tween girls are indeed shopping for their young girls at shops like PINK.

Jenny Erikson, a blogger on The Stir wrote that she didn’t want daughter ‘to be the girl with the ugly underwear’ at camp or slumber parties. She later told Good Morning America: ‘I don’t think there’s anything wrong with having cute panties and bras from the big girl store.’

Some Facebook commenters on the VS page had different views:

While I don’t agree with your new advertising choices because the girls look like they are 12, you can design and sell anything you want. I am a mother of a 10 year old girl and 1 year old boy, it is my job and the job of my husband to instill morals and values into our children. We also buy their clothes and if I feel that any brand of clothing is too mature for our daughter, guess what?? we don’t buy it. Simple as that. There are so many battles we have to face as parents, this just isn’t one of them. ~Melissa Nelson

It is easy to say “just don’t buy it for your kids” or “Parents, take responsibility”. The big picture problem is that marketing this type of thing to a younger audience sends a message on a large societal level that this is okay. It is okay to sexualize young women, that their worth is about how sexually desirable they are. This is problematic. ~ Jennifer Beaulieu

I have to agree with Jennifer on this one – saying “I won’t buy it” is fine but it doesn’t solve the larger issue here.

Rev. Evan Dolive of Houston, Texas wrote an open letter to the lingerie company. “As a father, this makes me sick,” he wrote. “I believe that this sends the wrong message to not only my daughter but to all young girls.”

What are your thoughts?

Relationships between brothers and sisters are often made of complicity, happy memories and bonding. However, we have to admit that these relationships sometimes have their share of jealousy and rivalry.

A certain dose of rivalry is healthy in brothers and sisters since it pushes self-assertiveness in children. Some studies have even demonstrated that encouraging equality in your children can nourish rivalry!

First of all, let’s make one thing clear: no parent can love his children exactly the same way. It does not mean loving one of your children less and it is not a crime. It is just reality. You love your children differently, that’s all! The same thing goes for your brothers and sisters or your friends. Knowing this, you can expect to be unfair sometimes when it is time to rule out an argument and that is why you must be careful and solve problems…not create them.

In addition, there is no ideal age gap between children. If your children are close in age, they might be very united but also very jealous. If there’s a significant age gap between your children, they will have less and less things in common as they grow up. A good age difference is considered to be between two years and three and a half years.
