Talking to your daughter about menstruation is a necessary part of helping her make the transition from little girl to young woman. While you might feel uncomfortable discussing the female reproductive system with her, it’s a conversation – or several – that needs to occur.

But before you can talk about menstruation, it’s important to have a good understanding of how the process works.

It’s a good idea to start talking about puberty early. When you see the first signs of puberty, that’s the time when you want to start mentioning that her body is starting to change, and that menstruation will occur next – a natural change that her body will make as she becomes a woman.

Here are some tips as you’re talking to your daughter about her first period:

Have several ‘talks’

It might be overwhelming to have just one “talk”. If you start having conversations months before her first period arrives, she’ll be able to absorb all of the information easier.

You can ask the school or teacher if they are going to be covering adolescent health topics in class. If they will be discussing puberty in health class, it’s a great way to continue the conversation at home. Ask what she’s learning and if she has any questions about it.

The Always brand, in partnership with PHE (Physical & Health Education Canada) and Ophea, provides hundreds of thousands of curriculum supporting guides, resources and sample kits to teachers across the country. If your daughter’s teacher doesn’t currently have resources available, he or she can easily order these materials online, free of charge.

Know the basic facts

You can simply explain that a woman has a period (menstruation) monthly. Having regular menstrual cycles is a sign that your body is working normally. It prepares your body for pregnancy each month with various phases and hormones.

First phase: Day one of a menstrual cycle begins when your period arrives. Within hours of starting your period, your estrogen levels will slowly begin to rise.

Second Phase: The follicular phase is when the hormone estrogen causes the lining of the uterus to grow. This lining starts to develop to receive a fertilized egg for a woman who is to become pregnant.

Third Phase: Between day 12 to 16, a tiny egg will release from one of your two ovaries to the nearest fallopian tube which then travels into the uterus. This is the ovulation phase and it’s the most fertile time to get pregnant.

Fourth Phase: The luteal phase is the latter phase of the menstrual cycle when the main hormone associated with this stage is progesterone, which is significantly higher during the luteal phase than other phases of the cycle. Then progesterone levels drop, causing the lining to shed as a new menstrual cycle starts.

Know the answers to common questions

There will be many questions to answer but here are some of the common first questions she may ask.

How long will my period last?

It varies for each girl, but some have their period for 3 days and others have it for a week.

How much blood will there be?

Periods can be light, moderate, or heavy, and there can be a total of 2-4 tablespoons (30-59 milliliters) of blood. And this can vary from period to period in the same girl.

How long is a menstrual cycle?

A normal menstrual cycle could be as short as 22 days or as long as 36 days. The average cycle is 28 days.

Will I get cramps?

While most girls eventually have some cramps, some will not for the first year or two of getting their periods. Tell her that cramps usually only last a few days but that a heating pad and exercise can help.  If cramps become too painful, talk to your doctor.

What is PMS?

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) are physical and emotional changes such as bloating, mood swings, irritability, breast tenderness, etc. that can occur during the time right before a period.  Girls usually won’t feel PMS symptoms until several years after menstruation starts, if ever.

first period

Use resources

Tweens and teens may be uncomfortable talking about puberty too! You can turn to books, DVDs or websites to help explain what’s happening to her body, or your family doctor answer questions.

You can start a nonchalant conversation while you’re grocery shopping and walking down the feminine-hygiene product aisle, or flipping through a magazine together and happen to see a pain reliever ad. Once you start the conversation, the tension will break.

Encourage her to be healthy

Maintaining a healthy and balanced diet is important and can relieve some of the unpleasant effects of a menstrual cycle. Taking vitamins can also help relieve some symptoms, such as magnesium can help reduce cramping, while regular intake of vitamin B6 throughout your cycle can help minimize bloating.

Be positive

Be gentle and open when you’re talking about it and talk about it in a positive light. Rather than say, “oh the dreaded period”, moms can explain that periods are a natural and amazing part of being a woman. Make sure to also explain that her body will change differently than her friends – it’s good for them to understand that her friends may get their periods at a different age – and that’s completely normal.

Some time ago, my family and I went shopping for a new mattress at Sleep Country Canada. We decided to go with the the iComfort® Sleep System by Serta® with Cool Action™ Gel Memory Foam.

But wait! We weren’t done yet! Our lovely salesperson, Steven, had us try several pillows too – because sleep isn’t just about the mattress, apparently! Good neck support is also important to a good night’s sleep.

There are a variety of pillows to choose from, from Back Sleeper, Stomach Sleeper, Side Sleeper, to a Variable Sleeper. Sleep Country Canada also has the best selection of mattress pads, sheets, pillow protectors, duvets, bed frames and headboards.

5 ways to get a better sleep

Our new bed has been very comfortable. The first week or two did take some adjusting – I wasn’t used to the feel of the memory foam mattress and my body temperature had to adjust. It also took me a little time to figure out which pillow was best for me.

Are we getting better sleep? Most definitely, thanks to our new mattress, pillows and sheets from Sleep Country Canada! I don’t wake up sore and stiff any more and am sleeping through the night without waking up. It’s often difficult to get out of bed in the morning.

The mattress and pillows helped me to have a better sleep – here are 5 ways to get a better sleep:

5 ways to a better sleep

5 Ways to Get a Better Sleep

1. Create a bedtime routine

No this is not for your baby or toddler, although you can get some good ideas from their routines! You want a relaxing non-stimulating evening ritual like taking a warm bath, drinking a cup of camomile tea, reading a book or listening to soft music. Relaxing activities can promote better sleep by easing the transition between wakefulness and drowsiness.

But be careful with watching TV or using electronic devices – they can interfere with sleep. If you go to bed and wake up the same time every day, even on weekends and holidays, you’ll be getting your body on a sleep-wake schedule… much like your child!

2. Watch your food/drink

Limit how much you drink before bed so you’re not waking to use the bathroom during the night. Watch your caffeine intake too – that 3pm coffee could still be keeping you up at night.  I hate to tell you but those last night snacks might be interfering with your sleep. Stop eating at least three hours before your scheduled bedtime. If you must snack on something, keep it small and healthy like a glass of milk or an apple.

3.  Create a bedroom retreat

Create a bedroom that’s relaxing and comfortable, a retreat after a long hard day. A cook, dark and quiet room can help sleep as well. Have some soft lighting, comfortable bedding and relaxing music rather than a loud, blaring TV or radio. Also don’t have a clock staring at you when you’re trying to sleep.

A good mattress can also help you have a more restful and peaceful sleep. Comfortable pillows for your sleep position and bedding can also help keep you from tossing and turning all night.

5 Ways to Get a Better Sleep

4.  Exercise

Regular exercise can promote better sleep, helping you to fall asleep faster and to enjoy deeper sleep. But don’t work out too close to bedtime, you might be too energized to fall into dreamland!

5. Manage your Stress

We all have stressful lives which can take a toll on our sleep. Schedule some time to de-stress – and really stick to a bedtime routine to get you relaxed for the night. Yoga and meditation can also help decrease stress and improve sleep. A study showed that daily 30- to 45-minute yoga sessions significantly improved symptoms for those suffering from chronic insomnia.

I had a craving for gingerbread cookies. But because I’m gluten free and dairy free too, I needed to make up my own version of gluten free and vegan gingerbread cookies.

These gluten free gingerbread cookies are soft, just the way I like them!

Ingredients:

1/4 cup butter, softened (substitute with grape seed oil if vegan)

1/4 cup coconut palm sugar

1 flax egg – 3 tbsp water mixed with 1 tbsp flax seed meal (mix these together and let sit for 5 minutes until becomes gel-like)

1/3 cup molasses

1.5 cups GF flour (I use ½ cup each almond, tapioca and sorghum flour)

1/2 tsp ground ginger

1/4 tsp baking soda

1/4 tsp salt

1/4 tsp ground cloves

1/4 tsp ground cinnamon

gluten free gingerbread cookies

Instructions

In a large bowl, beat butter with sugar until fluffy.  Beat in eggs and molasses.  In another bowl, mix flour, ginger, baking soda and spices.  Add flour mix into molasses mix in batches, mixing well and blending with hands if necessary.

Divide the dough into two flattened balls (discs).  Wrap in plastic wrap and put in fridge for a couple of hours.

Roll out dough to a 1/4″ thickness and cut into shapes using cookie cutters.  Bake at 325F for about 10 minutes on parchment-lined baking sheet or until edges are golden brown.

Enjoy!

If you want a relaxing getaway in the middle of the city, Hammam Spa is the place to be.

Hammam is an exotic escape from the hustle and bustle of King Street West in Toronto. It’s unisex so both women and men can enjoy the urban Hammam.

Hammam is a “Ritualistic Bath” built on the ancient philosophy of the traditional Turkish bath still found throughout Europe, Russia and Asia. Turkish baths were traditionally steam-filled grottos for social gatherings of the upper class. Women and men would lounge in the steam, during body treatments while socializing.

What makes this luxurious spa in Toronto different from the rest is the Hammam area. The Hammam Steam Room is a co-ed facility so you can wear a wrap which the spa provides (along with a robe and slippers) or bring your own bathing suit.

turkish bath

It’s hot and steamy with eucalyptus and other relaxing scents, dark and illuminated by changing lights. If the heat becomes too much, you can cool down in the Tea Lounge and relax with a snack and some magazines.

Hammam Spa

I found the Hammam Steam Room so relaxing and the heat was soothing to my aching muscles. I took a break after 10 minutes to get some water just outside the steam room, and went back in for another 10 minutes. I could go in and out of the Hammam Steam Room all day; it’s wonderful for your skin.

Mother's Day Spa

Hammam Spa also offers two signature ritual treatments traditional to Hammam treatments found in Morocco, Turkey and the Middle East – the Hammam Turkish Bath Treatment, where you lay down on a heated white onyx table imported from Turkey. The other is the Rhassoul Wrap Treatment.

Hammam Spa

I had the most amazing facial done – I’ve never had a facial done before so this was a huge treat for me. The senior therapist who pampered me, Cynthia, first took a look at my skin and asked me questions about my daily routine and products that I use. She told me what areas needed some “work” and  then proceeded to give the most amazing treatment for my skin-type using Dermalogica prodcuts.

Not only did I receive a wonderful Dermologica Custom Facial, I was also pampered with a scalp, hand and neck massage as well as a hot towel compression on my feet.  I could’ve easily fallen asleep on the massage table. The Turkish/Middle Eastern music took me away to a foreign place.

Hammam Spa

Hammam Spa is an escape from the urban chaos of Toronto, transporting you to the Middle East.

This May, Hammam Spa is offerings a special Mother’s Day Spa Package called Mother’s Daydream which will include a Hammam Steam Ritual, Dermalogica Custom Facial and Spa Manicure. The package is a value of $175.00 but offered for purchase during May at $150.00. The $25 discounted value from each purchase will be donated directly to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. Such a wonderful partnership!

Whisking the family away for a dream trip to a sunny destination?

Whether you’re going on an adventure of a lifetime, a bustling city tour or a dreamy beach getaway, it’s important to make sure you and your family travel worry-free. The last thing you want on vacation is something to go wrong and ruin your family’s plans.

Give yourself enough time to prepare well in advance and ensure that you’ve covered all of your bases before travelling with the family.

Here are 7 tips for worry-free travel

tips for traveling

Passports

Make sure all of your passports are valid and won’t expire while you are away! I remember booking a trip but then not realizing that my son’s passport already expired – young children’s passports expire within five years.

Travel Documents

You’ll obviously need to have original documents with you but it’s a good idea to have copies of all of your travel documents elsewhere. I suggest scanning and emailing your travel documents, passport, itinerary and insurance policy to yourself and to a family member.

Travel insurance

You don’t want to think that something bad could happen while on vacation but you need to be covered in the event something does. Even if it’s a simple visit to the emergency for a child’s ear infection, not having travel insurance could cost you thousands of dollars. Make sure you book your travel insurance ahead of time, at least for medical/emergency, and consider buying coverage for trip cancellation.

Vaccinations

The last thing you want on vacation is to get sick or contract any viruses or infections. Make sure all of your family’s immunizations are up to date and ask your doctor if your children have had all of their shots of Twinrix, for example, which protects against Hepatitis A and B.

Data/roaming plan

I’ve heard stories of people coming back from vacation to a cell phone bill costing thousands of dollars. Do your research before leaving on your trip and secure a data/roaming plan with your cell phone provider.

Check the Fine Print

When booking your travel or activity, always check the fine print. If you’re doing something risky on a trip like bungee jumping or scuba diving, check that the operators have legitimate qualifications and a good safety record first, and be sure that the instructors are qualified.

Carry Light and Smart

Don’t bring all of your bank, credit and identification cards in your wallet or purse. Keep at least one in a different place, such as in the hotel room safe. If you lose all of your cards while travelling, it is very difficult to get replacements.

Personalize your luggage so that it’s easy to spot at baggage claims. Don’t pack 10 pairs of shoes either – do you really need to bring all of that?! Pack light and bring just the essentials.

Wear a cross-body purse so that your belongings are always near your body. Don’t bring expensive jewellery while on vacation either and have some money in the local currency on hand.

Got your Canadian flag luggage tag? WIND Mobile offers real Unlimited Data, Talk & Text across the USA so that you can cross the border without your phone bill crossing your mind. It’s just one of the ways WIND makes travelling with your phone worry-free, while letting you enjoy true mobile freedom in Canada and across the USA.

Do you like to cook? Do your kids participate in cooking family meals?

Some of my fondest childhood memories are of my mom cooking in the kitchen and little me watching and as I grew older, helping her. I owe it to my mom and my older sister for my love of cooking and baking, and my dad for his mad grilling skills!

Fifty-seven per cent of Canadians say cooking with their parents played a role in the development of their own cooking abilities. When cooking skills are passed down from generation to generation, there’s more enjoyment and collaboration in the kitchen.

Canadians who cooked with their parents as children are much more likely to love cooking as adults and involve others in meal preparation, according to new research conducted by Sobeys.

But only 18 per cent of Canadians are consuming at least one meal per day made with basic ingredients or from scratch. During a typical week, Canadians on average only prepare about FOUR meals from basic ingredients.  That’s it!

food revolution day

There is a generation gap when it comes to food knowledge and confidence in cooking skills too. Only 31 per cent of 18 to 29 year olds feel confident in the kitchen.

The findings in the national survey point to a trend that could lead to significant health consequences. A 2012 study showed that approximately 62 per cent of dietary energy in Canada comes from ultra-processed products, which are significantly higher in fat, sugar and sodium.

To encourage more Canadians to get cooking, Sobeys is participating in Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution Day, a global day of action for people to make a stand for good food and essential cooking skills.

Jamie Oliver is passionate about sharing his food knowledge and inspiring people of all ages to get cooking. So on April 28, 2014, Sobeys will launch Canada’s Biggest Potluck Party challenging Canadians to host a potluck leading up to Food Revolution Day on May 16.

food revolution day

When participants share a post or photo of their potluck with the hashtag #PotluckChallenge, Sobeys will donate $1 to the Cooking Toward Independence Project. The new initiative run by the Children’s Aid Foundation will improve the lives of young people leaving the child welfare system across Canada when they turn 18 by funding cooking skills workshops and creating access to healthy food.

Food Revolution Day is all about cooking from scratch and sharing cooking skills and food knowledge. Sobeys’ research proves it – not enough Canadians have cooking skills to pass down. I’m excited to be working together to change that. ~ Jamie Oliver.

Canadians are invited to test their own kitchen savvy and compare their skills against others with an interactive quiz available at BetterFoodForAll.com through April 28, 2014. The website also includes information about Food Revolution Day and, later this month, will feature potluck inspiration and the #PotluckChallenge photo stream.

Get cooking and join me, Jamie Oliver and Canadians by following @Sobeys and tweeting with #FRD2014 and #PotLuckChallenge!

I suffer from eczema on my hand (extreme dryness) and feel self-conscious about it on my hands – I can’t imagine having rosacea on my face.

Rosacea is a chronic condition characterized by facial erythema (redness) and sometimes pimples.  It has four subtypes, three affecting the skin and the fourth affecting the eyes (ocular type). Rosacea can worsen over time if left untreated.

This inflammatory skin condition affects over two million Canadians! April is Rosacea Awareness Month – and hopefully a new skin care product can help those affected.

Vancouver dermatologist Dr. Jason Rivers developed Riversol to help sufferers of rosacea and sensitive skin in general. Riversol is an effective over-the-counter skin care product which contains a key natural ingredient called beta-thujaplicin, a potent antioxidant derived from the Western Red Cedar tree. Riversol is the first product in North America to use this ingredient, which hasn’t been used before because of high costs of the process.

The combination of beta-thujaplicin, Vitamin C and Vitamin E calms the skin, reduces the appearance of redness, and improves clarity and texture while deeply hydrating the skin. I’m wondering if this cream would also be effective on my eczema, as it also can be used for sensitive and acne prone skin.

There are a number of triggers so it often can be difficult to pinpoint what is irritating the skin.  Although there isn’t a cure for rosacea, Riversol has helped sufferers within three weeks.  “Even better, many have indicated that they are no longer self-conscious about their skin,” said Dr. Rivers, who also is the president of the Acne & Rosacea Society of Canada, a non-profit organization formed to educate people about acne and rosacea.

I have used Riversol for almost a year now and am amazed at the results! I still have problems with pimples but Riversol keeps them at bay by removing redness from the Rosacea and clearing them up quickly. When I use the serum before bed I notice a huge noticeable difference overnight. I will never switch to another product because I know Riversol works the best for me. I have tried Proactiv and other “dermatologist recommended” products and they have only made my skin worse. For so long I was embarrassed to go out because even foundation wouldn’t completely cover the mess up. I’m happy to be able to purchase from a local business and the customer service is always amazing!   ~ Carly Davies

We are giving away a sample kit of Riversol to one reader.
