What’s your least favourite chore in the kitchen?

Cleaning the stove? Fridge? Doing dishes? I dread wiping down kitchen cabinets and cleaning the kitchen fan.

Let’s just say that the only ‘chore’ I enjoy doing in the kitchen is cooking. Keeping the kitchen clean is a challenge when there always seems to be crumbs on the counter tops and a sink full of dishes.

I’m grateful to have a dishwasher and smudge-proof refrigerator – now if only my oven and dishwasher were also smudge-proof!

One problem with having stainless steel is the fingerprints and spill marks. They show up so easily on stainless steel appliances – but not anymore!

Since having my Frigidaire Gallery® French Door Bottom Mount refrigerator, I don’t have to buy stainless steel cleaner anymore. I can easily wipe down the fridge with a hot wet cloth and remove any dirt or spills.

It’s one less thing I need to do in the kitchen... and I will take anything that will decrease the amount of time I spend cleaning!

You need to see how it works so I’m doing the Living Proof of Smudge-Proof™ Challenge using mustard and ketchup on my Frigidaire Gallery® refrigerator.

With their patented Smudge-Proof™ Stainless Steel finish, Frigidaire Gallery® and Frigidaire Professional® stainless-steel appliances have a new anti-smudge technology that resists those little fingerprints and is easier to clean than traditional stainless steel surfaces.

Frigidaire® uses high-grade stainless steel coated with layers of polymers, resulting in a sleek, beautiful stainless steel finish that is both durable and resistant to fingerprints.

So I can enjoy having stainless steel but without the high maintenance of standard stainless steel.

Smudge-Proof™ Stainless Steel is available on all Frigidaire Gallery® and Frigidaire Professional® products – see the collection here.

My baby is 11 months old and I’ll have to return to work soon. The problem is, I don’t want to go back to work after maternity leave. How will I be able to leave my precious baby for someone else to care for?

I thought I would return to work after having a baby but now that my baby is turning 1, I’m in a panic about leaving her. I feel like I need to just quit my job and stay home to raise her.

I want to be the one who will take her first steps, watch her string her first words together, be there for her to hold her when she’s crying rather than a stranger. I just can’t bear the thought of her being in a daycare with all these other kids, not having the attention of her mama or papa.

I’m not even sure yet if we could afford to have me stay home. I wouldn’t want my husband to feel the pressure of earning his income for all three of us.

And then what about my career? How do I justify all the years of university and work experience just to leave it all to stay home and be a mum? Will it be harder for me to go back to work in a few years or should I bite the bullet and go back now?

This inner battle between being a mom and being a career woman is really hard for me to wrap my head around. Has anyone else experienced these feelings of wanting to be a stay-at-home mum AND a working successful career woman? I feel like I’ll be a failure if I decide to stay home and then feel guilty if I decide to go back to work.

I could really use some advice.

Baking soda is not just for baking, or for keeping your fridge smelling fresh.

Along with vinegar, baking soda is one of the best cleaning agents you can use around the home that is non-toxic, inexpensive and multi-purpose. It removes stains, sanitizes, deodorizes, polishes, cuts through grease and more.

How else can you use baking soda around the house? Well I have a list of 25 ways to clean with baking soda!

baking soda

  1. Instead of harsh chemical cleaners, use baking soda as natural and food-safe surface cleanser on your kitchen counters. Sprinkle it onto a damp sponge or cloth to wipe surfaces clean. Wipe and then rinse with water.
  2. Keep your fridge and freezer smelling fresh with ARM & HAMMER™ Fridge Fresh™.  For best results, replace every three months. Baking soda helps eliminate strong odours in both the fridge and freezer to help foods taste fresher longer.
  3. To remove stale smells from food containers or coffee mugs, rinse out with hot water and baking soda. Soak overnight if smell or stains are stubborn.  Let them soak in a mixture of 4 tablespoons baking soda to 1 litre water.
  4. To clean silver, use a paste of 3 parts baking soda to one part water. Rub the paste onto the silver with a clean cloth or sponge until the tarnish is gone. Then rinse with warm water and dry with a soft cloth.
  5. Remove scuff marks and spills from the floor by sprinkling with baking soda and then wiping with a warm, damp cloth.
  6. Clean pots and pans and caked-on food by sprinkling with baking soda and adding hot water. Let heavily caked-on pots and pans and soak overnight.
  7. Remove stubborn stains with a baking soda paste – 3 parts baking soda, one part water. Apply, let stand, then scrub or wipe clean.
  8. Use Baking soda in your cat’s litter box to help prevent odours.
  9. Remove bad odours and spills from carpet by sprinkling baking soda over carpets before vacuuming to get out any lingering odours. Let stand for at least fifteen minutes and vacuum.
  10. To remove burnt food from your barbecue grill, sprinkle with baking soda, then soak. After several hours, the charred pieces will come loose easily.
  11. Before you pull out your patio furniture for the season, give it a thorough cleaning with baking soda. You can also keep your outdoor furniture fresh by sprinkling a little baking soda underneath cushions or inside the storage bag.
  12. Dust a bit of baking soda in the bottom of your garbage cans and recycling bins.
  13. Clean tile floors with ½ cup baking soda to a bucket of warm water. Mop and rinse.
  14. Sprinkle a bit of baking soda onto a damp sponge and apply directly to dirty walls and furniture. Rinse well.
  15. You can also keep closets smelling good by leaving a box open in a corner of your closet.
  16. Sprinkle a handful of baking soda on the bottom of your dishwasher to absorb food odors before your next load.
  17. You can also use baking soda to get dishes sparkling: add 2 tablespoons of baking soda to your regular dish detergent to cut the grease and foods left on your tableware.
  18. Remove grease and oil stains in the garage with pouring baking soda directly onto the spot and scrubbing with a wet brush.
  19. Wash your car by mixing ¼ cup baking soda in 1 quart warm water and use the solution to clean the exterior including windows and tires and the interior and floor mats.
  20. Refresh stinky runners by sprinkling baking soda inside the shoes to soak up sweat and odors.
  21. Clean baby or kids toys with 1/4 cup baking soda in 1 litre warm water.
  22. Keep drains flowing properly and avoid clogging by pouring 1/4 cup baking soda and hot water down sink and shower drains.
  23. Wash your clothes in cold water with a detergent specially formulated for use in cold water like ARM & HAMMER™ Coldwater Laundry Detergent.  You can save money on your energy bill at the same time, compared to using hot water.
  24. To remove grease stains, either add baking soda to the wash load or pre-treat the stains with a baking soda paste.
  25. Add a ½ cup baking soda to the rinse cycle to help get linens and towels extra clean and fluffy.

The Toronto Blue Jays opened their 38th season with a sold-out Rogers Centre for the HONDA Home Opener on Friday, April 4, 2014 against the New York Yankees.

We were invited as guests of Honda Canada – it’s the first time the boys have ever been to a Blue Jays game, let alone a Home Opener! Sadly the Blue Jays lost to the New York Yankees 7-3 but we had a great time.

Fans received a Honda Home Opener Rally Towel to wave during the game to support the home team. One lucky baseball fan won a brand new 2014 Honda CR-V thanks to Honda Canada!

There were 48,197 people in attendance at the #HondaHomeOpener. Olympic medalists from Sochi 2014 made an appearance as well as Roy Halladay.

Great entertainment was also provided by a semi-streaker who went running into the fields, shirtless.  He ran so fast, he could try out for the Blue Jays!

Jennifer Rollins is a wife and mom to a son. She works online as a virtual assistant.

My child has been struggling with math since last year. We’ve been working with him to understand concepts and he’s been doing extra math homework. But I’m wondering if he’s having difficulty because of the current curriculum and teaching methods.

I find myself sometimes baffled at the math material sent home from school.

math needs to change

why math needs a change

Often I’ve found myself re-reading homework instructions, trying to comprehend the new methods in teaching and learning math. I mean, if I can’t understand it, how the heck is my kid going to understand it? Now I’m not saying that I’m smarter than a 5th grader but everything looks Russian to me… I’m Greek so the saying doesn’t work well here!

When we were in school, we had to memorize the timetables, formulas – I don’t remember being allowed to use a calculator. So when I started reading more about a parent-led movement to go back to the basics, I was intrigued.

Creative-math, Common Core or Discovery Math – depending on where you live – is an approach to learning where students use physical materials and actions in learning math. The idea is that having children work through math questions in detail will help them understand math better. Students are prompted to solve equations in their heads rather than memorizing or using a formula.

Have you seen something like this?

discovery math example

So imagine drawing pictures of 7 x 8 to show the answer rather than memorizing your timetables. Discovery learning seems to be far more time-consuming to deconstruct every problem than to use a simple algorithm to solve it.

Seems like very complicated work to get to the same answer, no?

discovery math

It’s great that schools today focus on discovery learning and media literacy – but I need my kids to be taught the basics in math and spelling. Timetables, formulas, grammar – these are the foundations our kids need to move forward in learning. Kids need the foundation before they can continue to learn and thrive.

In order to write, you need to know your alphabet, read words, expand your vocabulary and master grammar. I was shocked when cursive writing is no longer taught in school too! And the basic principals of math – in order to solve math problems – the foundations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division have to be there, including memorizing timetables.

Children spend a ridiculous amount of time using strategies and drawing out how they would solve problems with pictures and x’s and charts. I don’t understand why memorizing basic principles became such a bad teaching method for kids.

This movement is growing in strength – enough that there are petitions by parents to bring back the basics in math and the pressure is working. Manitoba is the first province to revise math curriculum after pressure from parents and math professors. Students in kindergarten to Grade 8 are now taught all four standard methods for arithmetic – addition with a carry, subtraction with a borrow, long multiplication and long division.

Alberta has also caved to pressure from parents for curriculum changes – students will now have to memorize their multiplication tables. In the United States, Indiana became the first state to formally withdraw from the Common Core education standards.

What about Ontario, where I live? Ontario is reviewing its math curriculum. Although there isn’t a plan to make changes, Ontario’s Education Minister, Liz Sandals, recently said: “We expect kids to know their basic math facts,” she said. “That’s actually a great homework assignment: Learn your multiplication tables.”

Students should be able to recall basic math facts from memorization which in turn will help develop other skills like problem solving.

Last December, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development revealed that 15-year-old math students in Canada slipped out of the top 10, placing 13th out of 65 countries. What does this tell us? Math education needs a change.

This photo went viral last week on Facebook, written by a father frustrated by Common Core.

Common core math

The days leading up to my son’s recent math test, we had him memorize the timetables and recite them over and over again. Repetition. Practice. Memorization.

Here are his results.

This is the first time he’s received an A in math in the last two years – cause for celebration? Or proof that we need to go back to the basics?

What do you think?

Skin is an interesting organ… it responds differently to environment, products and what’s happening inside your body.

While I’m a firm believer that your skin is an indicator of how well you take care of yourself, I’m also always on the lookout for products to enhance my skin.

I have dry skin in the winter for the most part but I do have the occasional breakout. Summer means combination skin as well but I still want a light moisturizer with an SPF.

I had the chance to try CeraVe® AM and PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion which helps repair damaged skin and maintain the skin’s natural protective function. It has ingredients such as ceramides, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid… and you’re thinking, what does that mean?!

Ceramides help reduce lipid levels in damaged skin to repair, restore, and maintain the skin’s natural barrier as well as reduce redness. Niacinamide helps the skin produce more natural ceramides and fatty acids essential for repairing and restoring the skin barrier. Hyaluronic Acid attracts water to the top layer of the skin and ensures that the skin remains hydrated.

CeraVe is non-comedogenic, meaning it doesn’t clog pores or cause further outbreaks – which is crucial for skin like mine that can change with the seasons (or stresses!) It also has this interesting technology that releases all of these incredible ingredients over time. The CeraVe AM has SPF 30 which helps protect against sun’s damaging UV-aging and UV-burning rays.

All of these ingredients combined make CeraVe a great product for everyday use with the added benefit of sunscreen for daytime. It is not scented or greasy and feels light on your skin and it absorbs well. It’s not easy to find ceramides in this price range so CeraVe is very affordable. You don’t need the latest expensive age defying cream anymore for great looking skin!

CeraVe PM facial moisturizing lotion softens skin during the night and didn’t cause any T-zone breakouts. It feels smooth when I apply it to my skin and absorbs nicely without leaving a greasy feel behind.

Both CeraVe AM and PM penetrate deep into the skin to hydrate and nourish all day and night long!

CeraVe® is the first brand to contain the essential ceramides, cholesterol and fatty esters that healthy skin needs, delivered through a patented controlled-release MVE® system over 24 hours. The daily regimen of cleansers and moisturizers helps repair, replenish and protect the skin barrier to leave your skin looking and feeling soft, clean and healthy.

My favourite decade is baaaack – the 90s! We are seeing a ton of 90s inspired trends this spring summer 2014 including metallics, wider leg pants and jeans, longer skirts and pastels. Big sweaters, longer skirts, high-waist pants and menswear are still in style this spring 2014.

One trend that has been in style for the past year or so is the menswear-inspired trend, and this trend seems to be a major one for spring 2014.

So what’s in style for spring 2014?

Spring 2014 style

Oversized

The trend of wearing your clothes a little looser continues through spring and summer 2014. Not to say that tailored fits aren’t in style – they always are – but you’ll see more oversized clothing this year. You can always combine a tailored bottom with a an oversized top, for example.

Sweaters

Since I’m not a fan of the crop top, I’m happy that the sweater is also still on trend. The sweater is an easy piece to wear with pants, skirts, shorts and over dresses. Think chunky or fine, chunky or sporty, layered or by itself.  This spring/summer you’ll see more pop-art inspired sweaters in bright colors and graphics.

Biker and Boxy (Non-Moto) Jackets

Biker or moto jackets have been in style for many seasons but really, they’re a classic. This spring summer, think beyond your basic black and go for one in another colour. Also trending is the short and boxy silhouette in a variety of fabrics. They may be angular and shapeless but can look flattering when worn over a loose top and slim bottoms. Bomber jackets are also trendy this season. Either of these types of jacket can be worn with a skirt or a dress to balance out the toughness.

Wide-Leg Trousers

Spring runways weren’t short of billowy wide-leg pants in both dressy and casual styles. Culottes which are even wider and cropped, are also back in style. Nothing says fashion forward like being the first to jump onto a bold new shape. And while culottes aren’t exactly new, their volume and proportion in spring 2014 is unlike what we’ve seen in recent memory. Now considered ultra-chic, as well as figure forgiving, the mid-cropped culotte should be on your radar for spring 2014.

What's in Style for Spring 2014?

Jeans

Move over skinny jeans – full-length bootcut jeans are making a comeback too. Are skinny jeans on the way out? It’s been more than a decade since Kate Moss stepped out in skinny jeans, and they are finally starting to fade into obscurity – only to be replaced by flared jeans. So depending on which side of the tight jean fence you sit, this is either great or terrible thing.

Metallics

The metallic trend continues. Although we’ve seen full head-to-toe fabrics with sheen in metallic tones on the runway, I would opt for a one-piece statements like a blouse, skirt or a handbag.

What's for Style Spring Summer 2014

Pretty Pastels

In all of the spring and summer 2014 collections, springtime shades reigned supreme. Choose whatever colour flatters you the most and run with it – from soft pink to minty-green, to taupe and gray, you have many options.

Longer skirts

Can someone please tell the younger girls that the mini is not as fashionable this season?!?! Midi skirts and tea-length skirts are a wonderful and welcoming option for this spring/summer. Pair it with a fitted top to offset the fullness of the skirt.

I love pizza but since going gluten-free, I’ve been experimenting in the kitchen to make the perfect gluten-free pizza dough. Depending on your food sensitivities or allergies, you can mix your own gluten-free flours yourself, or buy a mix from the store or bulk food store.

Here is my recipe for gluten-free pizza dough.

Gluten-Free Pizza Dough

Ingredients

1.5 cups gluten-free flour
pinch of xantham gum
2/3 cup warm water
1 teaspoon active dry yeast
1 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
1 teaspoon salt
Extra warm water and olive oil

Directions

In a small bowl, sprinkle active dry yeast on top of warm water with a pinch of sugar and set aside in a warm oven for 10 minutes.

In a large bowl, add gluten-free flour, salt and olive oil. Add yeast water mixture and mix with hands until dough forms. Form into a ball, sprinkle some olive oil on top and place in warm oven with a tea cloth covering it.

Lightly grease wax paper. Place dough in the centre. Lightly grease the top of the dough. Add a piece of wax paper on top. Roll out dough to desired thickness.

Grease pan. Gently place the dough into the pan and spread dough with fingers to reach the edges of the pan. Add toppings.

Hamilton Beach’s Pizza Maker is a handy appliance that rotates to give you perfect crispy pizza. You can also use the Pizza Maker for making quesadillas, cooking 12” frozen pizzas, appetizers or spiral Greek pitas… spanakopita and tiropita that I can pick up at a local store when the kids have a craving. It can cook to 40 per cent faster and is up to 52 per cent more energy efficient than your regular kitchen oven.

The Pizza Maker features a 30-minute timer with auto shutoff and a viewing window so your kids can watch the food as it cooks.  There is no preheating required – just pop your pizza or other food in the pan, plug in and turn out!.

I turned on the pizza maker for about 30 minutes to cook this gluten-free crust.  The pizza came out so crispy at the bottom, which is how I prefer my pizza.
