Your bedroom is your safe haven, your escape after a long day of work and kids. But how do you update your bedroom décor on a budget?

An easy way to update your bedroom décor is to choose a different colour theme. Give the walls a fresh coat of paint, and buy new bedding. Another easy way to update your bedroom décor and make your bedroom feel warm, cozy and comfortable is to introduce more texture, layers and details to the space. Your bedding, along with layering pillows, can give your room a luxe feel. Add another layer to your bed by topping it with a quilted coverlet, folded at the foot of your bed, or a luxurious throw.

Neutral colours can be warmed by pairing them with such rich colours as terra cotta, muted browns and gold, sage green, and rich salmon shades. Just think of the sunset or beach – my favourite place!

Shades of brown, which are considered warm and neutral, work well in a room with large windows. If you’re choosing a more muted brown, create a monochromatic color scheme by pulling in different textures and add a pop of color in a bright shade such as turquoise or orange.

Here is my new bedding from Maple Harbour – it’s a soft white and greyish blue. I still need to buy a new headboard, and some artwork to hang above it. I’m thinking of an upholstered headboard in a grey fabric, and maybe a sepia tone framed photo, or a painting to hang above. I also need to change the paint colour – the darker shade no longer works, and I’d like to go fresh with a simple bright white.

What’s on your list for today? We all have a to-do list, whether it’s written down on a notepad, day planner, post-it notes, on your cell phone, or even in your head. Whether we actually check items off that list is a whole other story.

Writing to-do lists is an organization system that works for a lot of people, once you get into the habit of writing them. What is the most effective way not only to write a daily to-do list but to get more things done? The key is narrowing down your crazy list to a few tasks a day, otherwise you feel unproductive and overwhelmed.

A recent Google survey done by the Quaker Canada brand says 70 per cent of Canadians make to-do lists to help them manage their life. But here’s the thing: almost half of Canadians admit they don’t include the most important and fulfilling things in life on their lists in the first place.

The majority of items on most Canadians’ lists include everyday errands, work-related tasks and household chores, not things that really matter like helping out in the community or spending time with friends and family (only 15 per cent say that goes on the list).

The Quaker Canada brand is responding to this by helping Canadians shift their thinking so they can get to the important stuff. Quaker has launched a #TodayList website where visitors can turn their #TodayList item into a shareable photo for Twitter or Facebook. What a great way to stay accountable! Once you quickly sign in, you can also earn badges for making commitments on www.TodayList.ca, and track your progress.

Now this is a social movement I can get behind – inspiring and celebrating the things that matter everyday by committing to do one thing that is important to do TODAY.

Are you tight with your family? Or would you describe yours as dysfunctional?

The definition of family has certainly changed over the years. The once traditional family of mom, dad, two kids, a dog and a white picket fence is no longer. The new family has morphed into a multitude of ways – two dads, two moms, single mom or dad, step-parents, half-brothers and sisters, grandparents, foster parents, friends… Today’s modern family can come with quirks and a whole lotta love.

This month on Netflix, there are some great family themed shows and movies to enjoy. Grace and Frankie is Netflix’s new funny and fearless original comedy featuring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston. This show is a perfect example of how today’s families can shift, rearrange and blend in unexpected ways. When Grace and Frankie’s husbands leave them after 40 years of marriage—to be with each other—the women find themselves facing a change they never expected. They shift their perspective to get through it together, with the support of their new blended family and, of course, a sense of humour.

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

The affluent Banks family finds their lives turned upside down when street-smart Will, a Philadelphia relative, moves into their California mansion.

Party of Five

After their parents are killed, the five siblings of the Salinger clan must somehow make do, with eldest brother Charlie stepping in to lead the way.

The Addams Family

Stepping out of the pages of Charles Addams’ cartoons and the 1960s television series, members of the beloved, macabre family take to the big screen.

Despicable Me

Villainous Gru hatches a plan to steal the moon from the sky. But he has a tough time staying on task after three orphans land in his care.

Full House

Sisters D.J., Stephanie and Michelle grow up with three devoted father figures: their widowed dad, his goofy best friend and their cool uncle.

Mommie Dearest

Based on Christina Crawford’s scandalous tell-all memoir, Mommie Dearest paints a portrait of a Joan Crawford the public never knew. The film portrays Crawford as a wicked, abusive mother who lives as though she’s perpetually onscreen.

Boyhood

After divorcing, a mother and father continue to share the task of guiding their young son through youth and adolescence, and finally to adulthood. As the years roll by, the relationships among the three characters continue to evolve as well.

Who doesn’t love Nutella? My kids love it… probably a little too much for their own good! I buy the large package of two jars at a time – that’s how much the kids love it for a treat.

If you travel to Italy or Greece, Nutella is a common breakfast spread on freshly baked bread, mmmmm…. I wish I could eat both but because of crazy food sensitivities, now I drool when my kids eat them in front of me.

Longo’s and Nutella® are creating a pop-up Nutella Crêperie at Longo’s! The first of its kind in Canada, the pop-up crêpe kitchen will travel to Longo’s stores across the GTA, offering shoppers the opportunity to eat delicious warm crêpes with Nutella®, made fresh to order.

Crêpes with Nutella® – what more can I say?

What a perfect collaboration, given Longo’s is a family-owned and operated grocery chain and Ferrero Canada both share an Italian heritage! Mr. Michele Ferrero was a genius for creating Nutella® in 1964, am I right? The delicious chocolate hazelnut spread was based on a recipe developed by his father, Pietro Ferrero — confectioner and founder of Ferrero — in Italy’s Piedmont area.  The Italian’s do it right!

Not only is she the darling host of Entertainment Tonight Canada, Cheryl Hickey is also a devoted wife and mom of two kids, Jaxson, 5, and Nyla, 2. Now, she has added entrepreneur to her resume, having recently launched a skin care line.

OURS by Cheryl Hickey is a line of multi-purpose products ranging from personal care to household products, all designed with the entire family in mind. You’ll find familiar, natural ingredients like Coconut and Olive Oil, Aloe Vera, Vitamin E and Shea Butter. What you won’t see on the ingredient lists are parabens, sulfates, petrochemicals, synthetic fragrances, dyes, silicones, phthalates and anything else you would be worried about using on your family’s gentle skin. The OURS line is available exclusively at Rexall Drug Stores – a great gift idea for Mother’s Day is this “Pamper Me” package (see pic below).

I had the pleasure of chatting with the Owen Sound native about motherhood, ET Canada and OURS. Here is our interview!

amw: What inspired you to start OURS by Cheryl Hickey?

Cheryl: My family. I found it really difficult to find products that were natural, affordable, with a good shelf life, and that my entire family could use, from my colour-treated hair down to my kids and my husband. My son had some very sensitive skin, and I struggled with finding something that would work. I was frustrated with was out there – products with a long list of chemicals in them. I wasn’t comfortable putting those products on my son’s skin, so I went back to using coconut oil and olive oil. I was talking to my agent and said I’d like to start my own skin care line. Serendipitously we got a phone call from the people at Swisspharme; they were looking to do something similar, so we partnered up and OURS was born two years later.

OURS by Cheryl Hickey

amw: How do you balance now having a third “career”?

Cheryl: My husband and I were just talking about this last night! I feel like my life is broken into three parts – mommy, ET Canada and then my entrepreneur stuff I do on the side. There is no such thing as balance, it kind of goes in ebbs and flows. The one constant that comes first is my kids and husband. I put everything in time of day; the kids get my attention in the first thing in the morning with my husband, then I come over to ET Canada and do my work here, then it’s back to the kids, and then at night I work on my other projects. I’m usually up until about midnight.

Q: If you had a sleepless night because of the kids, for example, how do you pump yourself up for ET Canada?

Cheryl: I have an amazing make-up artist when I’m tired! I feel like ET Canada is a break from everything. I feel like I need to be up and high energy so I kind of use it as an escape. You fake it till you make it. You act until you feel that way! We have a very goofy studio crew so it’s difficult to be having a bad day and to not snap out of it when you walk into that studio.

Cheryl Hickey Entertainment Tonight

amw: How was it appearing on The Talk recently?

Cheryl: It was so much fun, I felt like a kid in the candy store. I’m a huge fan of TV in general so to see all the behind-the-scenes of the production is fascinating. We had an opportunity to see The Talk and watch a taping of American Idol, which was a pleasure. Working with those ladies is fun for me. I’m lucky!

amw: Who was the most memorable person you interviewed?

Cheryl: I had some really good moments with Sharon Osbourne, the woman is so rich with stories. Recently I enjoyed interviewing Kelly Clarkson, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. Tom Cruise was also fun.

amw: I read somewhere that you put on 70 pounds with both kids – I stopped looking at the scale after I surpassed 50 pounds! Did you feel pressure to take it off quickly?

Cheryl: With my son the first time, I did because I had to do a live Grammy show. So I worked really hard, I had a trainer and busted my butt! The second time, I wasn’t so hard on myself because I knew it was going to come off, I knew what I had to do, but I also knew that dresses came in all different shapes and sizes. I have a fantastic wardrobe stylist at ET Canada, and she worked with my body as it changed, and continues to change. My daughter is two now, and my body is finally starting to settle. I think it takes a long time.

ET Canada's Cheryl Hickey on Being Mom and Her Natural Products

amw: How has becoming a mother changed your outlook on life and your career?

Cheryl: My life has completely changed. Before I had my kids, I was very focused on my career, my husband and things that were in my immediate universe. Having kids has opened up my entire world. It changes everything and makes everything sweeter; makes the highs very high, and the lows very low. Being a mom magnifies everything in your life.

amw: How do you incorporate products into your beauty routine?

Cheryl: Before bed, I wash my face with the head to toe wash, and I’ll use the exfoliator every other day. In the morning, I use the 24-hour face cream, and the 2-1 conditioner. The anything balm, I use at night on my hands and feet, and sometimes on the apples of my cheeks for that shiny glow. I keep the anything balm in my diaper bag for my daughter, one in my son’s bag for school, and my husband keeps one in his golf bag!

OURS Mothers Day Pamper Mom Products

After having children, I dedicated the first few years to being the best parent I could be. Once I became a “seasoned” parent, and my body and mental state was back to normal, there was a part of the old me that was still missing.

It then began, my search for something more – a change of direction in my life. But I had two small children. What could I do that would allow me to take care of them while pursuing a life-long goal?

In Grade 5, I created a school project about what I wanted to be when I grew up. My answer was, “a teacher, writer or actress.” I tried the acting gig while I was in University studying Journalism. After graduating, I worked several jobs, as a reporter for a local TV station, in live theatre and film production. I wrote a couple of screenplays, acted in a few small indie films and commercials, and met my husband. Somehow along the way, I needed to make “real” money, so my career went off on a completely different path, where the steady paycheque was more appealing than a non-union actor’s rate.

After having kids and checking those goals off my life to-do list, I was ready to pursue my true dream again – the dream I had put on the backburner for a long time. If not now, when?

When you have a childhood dream, it never really goes away until you pursue it full force. Getting older means more responsibility, but it also brings with it a new outlook on life. Life-altering experiences, such as parenthood, bring a new clarity that may not be present in our younger years.

I knew I wanted to write. So I started writing my blog when blogging was fairly new, and shared my opinions and stories. Though few people were reading, it felt wonderful knowing my voice could be heard. I started freelance writing for magazines, websites, and corporate clients. I’m now in the midst of writing my first book.

Juggling kids, home life and work obligations in order to pursue a goal doesn’t come without challenges. Despite hectic schedules and obstacles, you learn to just keep going.

Is there a deadline to pursue your dream? What’s beautiful about life is that it’s never too late to try something new, or change your current situation.

Stick to your job. Don’t make a mistake. It’s too late. I’m too old. Some people may argue that it’s too late to follow your dream, or it’s tough to start over, or pursue an entirely new goal. These are excuses people put on themselves out of fear. Imagine missing a wonderful opportunity or a chance for real happiness because you put a limit on yourself?

Pursuing long-held ambitions later in life can be accomplished, if the love and passion exists. There is no age limit, and there is never a deadline when you pursue your true calling.

Treating Mom for Mother’s Day? Gifts are always welcome but what does mom also want? A Mother’s Day spa package or spa day where she can be pampered!

A Mother’s Day spa package at Hammam Spa is an escape from the urban chaos of Toronto, transporting you to the Middle East. What makes this luxurious spa in Toronto different from the rest is the Hammam area.

Hammam is a “Ritualistic Bath” built on the ancient philosophy of the traditional Turkish bath still found throughout Europe, Russia and Asia. Turkish baths were traditionally steam-filled grottos for social gatherings of the upper class. Women and men would lounge in the steam, during body treatments while socializing.

The Hammam Steam Room is a co-ed facility, so you can wear a wrap which the spa provides (along with a robe and slippers), or bring your own bathing suit. The steam of eucalyptus and other essential oils relaxes your body and senses. If the heat becomes too much, you can cool down in the Tea Lounge with a snack and a magazine.

How many hours a week do you spend in the kitchen, cooking meals and cleaning up? As a busy mom with a hectic schedule, I’m often flustered with dinner time… planning, shopping, preparing, cooking and then clean up. I welcome any appliance and recipe that makes my life a little easier.

If I can reduce the amount of time spent in the kitchen, I’m all over it. My husband works late hours so I do most of the cooking during the week. I do enjoy cooking, but sometimes mama needs a little break! It’s a challenge to prepare delicious meals the whole family will enjoy, fast and simplified – every night of the week. It becomes exhausting.

What’s your Mother’s Day tradition? Do your kids make you breakfast in bed? Does hubby prepare you a lovely lunch? Or do you go to your favourite restaurant for brunch or dinner?

Going out for lunch or dinner on Mother’s Day is ideal, however, the restaurants are usually packed. A nice meal prepared at home by the kids and the husband would be appreciated. With the Philips Airfryer, preparing a meal for mom is easy peasy.

The Philips Airfryer is just that – it cooks and fries your food with hot air, which means you can enjoy the fried taste of cooking without all of the oil. Using Rapid Air Technology, you can fry, bake, grill, broil, braise and caramelize your food in less time and right on your counter-top.

Philips Airfryer

The adjustable temperature control up to 390 degrees allows you to cook a variety of food. It has a 1.8 lb cooking basket capacity which is enough for a family of four, but because it cooks so quickly, you can cook several batches in no time. It also has a 30-minute timer with ready signal and auto shut-off, so you don’t have to keep your eye on it diligently, as you would if you’re grilling. Clean up is a snap; the basket comes out so you can wash and the bucket is also washable and dishwasher safe.

The Philips Airfryer comes with a recipe book to help inspire you – you can cook spring rolls, chicken wings, frittatas, even desserts! Also available is the new XL Digital Airfryer, which has 2.65 lb cooking capacity for larger families. It retails for $249.00 – $299.00, and is available at Hudson’s Bay, Williams-Sonoma, Bed Bath & Beyond, Home Outfitters, Home Hardware, Amazon.ca, Costco.ca, Best Buy and Future Shop.

Well guess what?!? The lovely people at Philips are giving an amotherworld reader a Philips Airfryer of their very own!
