My boys are reluctant readers. They have to absolutely love the author and/or the story in order to be intrigued. There are a handful of books that they enjoy reading over and over again… how can I get them to expand their horizons?

Imagine reading a storybook, and then being able to enter into the book by playing a game online or in real life? Imaginary Friends is an interactive book series for 8 to 12 year olds that brings a whole new dimension to reading.  Each Adventure Kit comes with a book of your choice divided into chapters, along with puzzles and secret notes and ideas – all so your child can experience an amazing interactive reading adventure.

How does Imaginary Friends work?

The books arrive at your doorstep along with an activity kit that includes puzzles, secret notes and other ideas that bring the story to life. Parents create an account, log in online, and personalize the story for their children. Kids then read a chapter and at the end of each chapter, the characters ask your child for help. Sometimes this will be an online game or an activity in the real world. Once a chapter is completed and the accompanying task, parents will receive an email to align with your child’s reading.

Imaginary Friends Adventure Kit

What does the Adventure Kit come with?

Each Adventure Kit comes with a printed book aimed at 8-12 year old reading level, divided into 7-10 chapters, an activity you can hide in the real world like puzzles or secret notes, a digital-connected game or video for EVERY chapter and extra ideas so parents can enhance the adventure.

Bring Stories to life with Imaginary FriendsThe Verdict?

My 8-year-old and I began the adventure together. We read first chapter together, and then we went online to complete the tasks. Can I just say that he figured out the interactive piece well before I did? I was hoping for some clues as I couldn’t figure out what to do next, but he managed to figure it out all on his own! What I like is that kids become a key part of the action, and they can read and complete the activities at their own pace.

My son is already looking forward to the next chapters, and the online activities that go with the books. Since my boys are reluctant readers, Imaginary Friends book series is a wonderful option for them to get excited about reading.

The Imaginary Friends team has launched a KickStarter campaign and hoping to grow the concept. Please give them some love!

If your children love LEGO, then you must visit Legoland Florida in Orlando. My suggestion is to go during the week and first thing in the morning, when the park opens. The line-ups were short and the weather wasn’t too hot when we went (in May).

Here are 5 reasons why you should visit Legoland Florida:

5 Reasons Why You Should Visit Legoland Florida

1. Miniland USA

You will be amazed as you walk through Florida, California, New York, Washington D.C., all made out of LEGO!

New York City features tiny jets of water shooting up from the fountain in Rockefeller Plaza, while an army of animated yellow taxicabs prowls the streets of Times Square. The Statue of Liberty, a cutaway view of Grand Central Station, The Empire State Building, the Guggenheim Museum and the Bronx Zoo are just a few of the iconic landmarks all made out of LEGO.

Visit the White House (including the first family and “first dog”) in Washington, D.C., as well as re-creations of the Smithsonian, and the Washington and Jefferson monuments. An animated marching band parades in front of the Capitol, and tiny cherry trees blossom every spring.

Miniland wouldn’t be the same without featuring Las Vegas and the world-famous Strip including the Luxor Las Vegas, New York, New York Hotel and Casino, Excalibur, Mirage, Treasure Island, Tropicana, MGM Grand, Venetian, Stratosphere tower and two iconic structures of Paris Las Vegas: the balloon sign and Eiffel Tower. “The Strip” at LEGOLAND also features a miniature wedding chapel, monorails and real-life sounds recorded in Las Vegas. How cool is that?

My kids also love collecting and building LEGO® STAR WARS™, so imagine their delight to see some of the most famous scenes from the six live-action Star Wars movies. Fans can marvel at a scene from the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars™. The scenes are all made out of 1.5 million LEGO® bricks built in 1:20 scale. To add to the Star Wars experience, you can pose with life-size LEGO models of Darth Maul, R2-D2 and Darth Vader.

2.  The World of Chima

My kids loved watching the Cartoon Network show, The LEGO World of Chima and building Chima LEGO. So to see an area featuring Chima was a surprise. The area has an interactive water ride, The Quest for CHI, a super-charged Speedorz Arena, Cragger’s Swamp water play area, a new 4D movie experience and character meet-n-greet sessions.

3.  Lego Kingdoms

LEGO® Kingdoms takes kids back to medieval times with the LEGOLAND Castle where spells are cast and many knights, damsels and dragons are found. The Dragon is an indoor/outdoor steel roller coaster that features a hilarious, behind-the-scenes view of life within the enchanted LEGOLAND Castle. The King’s Market is great for little ones to become a prince or princess in our open air marketplace. From whimsical role play to dreamy dress up, this is the place to become a hero.

4. The Rides

There are some fun rides in the park including:

Lost Kingdom Adventure: This spectacular dark ride invites guests to fire laser blasters at targets and brave the rugged Egyptian landscape in all-terrain roadsters, while attempting to unearth the vast treasures of a forgotten empire.

Coastersaurus: This wooden coaster curves and dips in and around a prehistoric jungle of animated and life-sized LEGO brick dinosaurs.

Project X: Brave guests feel the power of acceleration, braking and maneuverability as they race a life-size LEGO® TECHNIC vehicle along a wild roller coaster track.

5. Imagination Zone

Imagination Zone emphasizes exploring and creation, which is what LEGO is all about. It also showcases seven of the most visually exciting LEGO models in the world, including a replica of Albert Einstein’s head. We didn’t get a chance to build and program cutting-edge, computerized LEGO MINDSTORMS™ robots, which would be super cool.

There is a new LEGO Hero Factory located at the Imagination Zone, where kids can build and create their own heroes. Kids can also meet and greet with LEGO Hero Factory’s bravest leader, Preston Stormer. Visit herofactory.LEGO.com for more information about LEGO Hero Factory and its amazing missions!

Other fun things to see:

Legoland has a fun Ford Driving School in LEGO® City where children ages 6 through 13 can experience “real-life” driving, and receive their official LEGOLAND driver’s license.

Legoland also has a full water park, where families can cool off. Another attraction not to miss is Cypress Gardens, the historic botanical gardens featuring the Banyan tree that was planted as a seedling in 1939.

You’re travelling from a cooler destination during spring or fall, to a warmer destination and you’re not sure what to bring. What to pack for a 5 day beach trip?

You don’t need a lot – in fact, I’d only pack what you need in a carry on bag. The trick is to pack items that you can mix and match, so stick to a simple colour palette. White, navy, and neutrals can easily be mixed and matched.

Erin Nadler of Better Styled recently came to my home, and rummaged through my closets to help me scale down my wardrobe. Stay tuned to see how our visit went in an upcoming piece for The Toronto Star, written by Brandie Weikle.

I had tons of clothing that either didn’t work with my style, didn’t fit properly, and were simply outdated. I didn’t realize how freeing it would be to ditch clothing from my closet! I ended up having three bags of clothing to donate.

After our visit, I felt lighter, and more organized. It felt great to declutter my closet, also making it easier to put outfits together quickly, as well as pack for a 5 day beach trip! Here is a list of what to pack for a 5 day beach trip, which can fit in a carry on bag.

What to Pack for a 5 Day Beach Trip

For the Flights:

1 Jean + 1 top + 1 knit sweater

Flat sandals or shoes

1 jacket + scarf

1 necklace

1 purse, sunglasses and hat

I’d suggest travelling in a comfortable skinny jean, a knit v-neck tee or a light blouse, and a knit sweater to wear on top. Wear your jacket and a scarf, along with a pair of flat sandals or ballerina flats. Throw on an airy, summery scarf along with a necklace. I’d bring sunglasses and hat with you so you don’t have to pack them in your carry on. I’d wear the same outfit going home.

To Pack:

2 bermuda shorts

2 tops

1 light cardigan

1 large knit sweater

2 maxi dresses

1 pair of wedge sandals

2 bathing suits with cover ups

1 pair of flip flops

1 necklaces

Pj’s and undergarments

The bermuda shorts, you can dress up or down with either flat sandals, or wedge sandals, and mix and match all three tops. Add the knit sweater, or light cardigan. Maxi dresses can be worn during the day with flats, or in the evening with wedge sandals, along with the cardigan or knit sweater for evenings by the ocean. You can also wear the jeans with either top, along with the sweater. Accessorize with the scarf and necklaces.

What to pack for a 5 day beach trip

Clothing I packed:

Navy and white striped linen top

White and navy linen top

Off-white tank and tee

Off-white linen cardigan

White jeans

Light brown bermuda shorts

Blue and white striped linen shorts

Black maxi dress

Patterned maxi dress

Khaki large-knit sweater

White and navy striped knit sweater

Wedge sandals

Flat sandals

What do you find most challenging about packing for a short trip?

Do you ever look at someone and wonder what is going on inside their head? Disney Pixar’s original new film “Inside Out” ventures inside the mind to find out.

Based in Headquarters, the control center inside 11-year-old Riley’s mind, five Emotions are hard at work, led by lighthearted optimist Joy (voice of Amy Poehler), whose mission is to make sure Riley stays happy. Fear (voice of Bill Hader) heads up safety, Anger (voice of Lewis Black) ensures all is fair and Disgust (voice of Mindy Kaling) prevents Riley from getting poisoned—both physically and socially. Sadness (voice of Phyllis Smith) isn’t exactly sure what her role is, and frankly, neither is anyone else.

Disney Pixar Inside Out win tickets

When Riley’s family relocates to a scary new city, the Emotions are on the job, eager to help guide her through the difficult transition. But when Joy and Sadness are inadvertently swept into the far reaches of Riley’s mind—taking some of her core memories with them—Fear, Anger and Disgust are left reluctantly in charge. Joy and Sadness must venture through unfamiliar places—Long Term Memory, Imagination Land, Abstract Thought and Dream Productions—in a desperate effort to get back to Headquarters, and Riley.

Directed by Academy Award® winner Pete Docter (“Monsters, Inc.”, “Up”), produced by Jonas Rivera, p.g.a. (“Up”) and featuring an original score by Michael Giacchino (“The Incredibles,” “Ratatouille,” “Up”), Disney Pixar’s “Inside Out” opens in theatres on June 19, 2015.

If you’re thinking of a summer beach vacation with the family, The Outer Banks of North Carolina is a wonderful choice. For larger families, or a group, a condo rental is your best bet. But for a more upscale resort chic experience, the Sanderling Resort is a premier destination.

The Sanderling Resort exemplifies resort chic in the Outer Banks or OBX, what locals call it. Steeped in decades of tradition and southern hospitality, the Sanderling has been recently renovated to include three multi-story buildings, and five Carolina beach-style rental homes. The resort spreads over 16 quiet acres of Ocean-to-Sound property, five miles north of Duck.

Families can sign up for kayak tours, stand up paddle board lessons, and other activities through Kitty Hawk Kites, the second location in the Outer Banks. The resort offers live entertainment three nights a week at the fire pit, from singers, to steel drum players, to graveyard of the Atlantic ghost stories. The pool is lovely, but the beach is a highlight – with private access to resort guests, it’s a gem.

For families, the Sanderling offers a childrens activity program beginning in mid-June. Guests can drop off their kids (bonus!) between 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. or 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., so mom and dad can sneak off for a late lunch, or treat themselves to a spa treatment at the award-winning Spa at Sanderling. Parents can also enjoy a round of golf via the resort’s partnership with Curratuck Golf Club.

The accommodations are equally lovely and spacious, offering either a stunning view of the ocean or sound. I’d recommend an oceanview room with balcony, so you can savour the gorgeous views and sunsets. Rooms bring the outside in with its beach decor, and a splash of orange – the signature Sanderling colour.

The staff is courteous, helpful and always greeting guests. When we arrived, it was pouring rain but were greeted with umbrellas and smiles by the staff to escort us from our vehicle to the entrance. The lobby and sitting areas on the second floor are casual and cozy – grab a book, or a drink and snuggle up on the sofa, and watch the sun go down.

A popular choice for couples, the Sanderling offers an adult-only Tranquility Pool, the Spa at Sanderling which overlooks Currituck Sound and features a couple’s suite with couple treatments. I didn’t have time to enjoy a massage or facial, sadly.

Dining is also a highlight of the Sanderling Resort, with dining options throughout the property including the Beach House Lobby Bar which has a chic, casual feel. The Lifesaving Station is Sanderling’s casual restaurant celebrating southern coastal cuisine and regional, organic products. Located in the original, restored Caffey’s Inlet Life Saving Station No. 5 built in 1899, it’s known for amazing breakfasts in the area and their a-la-carte Sunday brunch. Chef Dan Grunbeck’s menu changes seasonally, and specials feature the freshest of the day’s catch. Must try the grits!

The elegant, dinner-only AAA Four-Diamond Kimball’s Kitchen restaurant has a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Currituck Sound, a gorgeous spot to watch the sunset. It’s a five-star restaurant experience for all, including one enjoyed by those celebrating a wedding or anniversary in the Outer Banks, or travellers who’ve arranged a special occassion on site.

I enjoyed their signature cocktail, the Cosmopolitan at the bar, before heading to dinner with our group. The entire resort supports and promotes seasonal, organic, artisanal, and local ingredients (S.O.A.L.). Chef Marty Pollock incorporates premier ingredients—such as Certified Angus Beef® and Kobe Beef—to supplement the restaurants’ local focus and also introduces a daily oyster menu at Kimball’s Kitchen to ensure the freshest selections available.

I visited the Outer Banks on a media trip hosted by the Outer Banks tourism board. All opinions, as always, are my own.

What does your child want to be when he/she grows up? Does he/she have interest in math, science, technology and/or engineering? How can you nurture a love for science and math in your child?

Other than an NHL hockey player (surprise, surprise), my youngest child has always shown an interest in building and creating things. He’d like to study to be an architect or engineer, so he says. Since he has shown an interest in technology and engineering at a child’s level, I’d like to nurture his love for science and math. My eldest, on the other hand, excels at oral presentations and media literacy.

While it’s still early to decide on a career path, I’d like to offer my children the tools to pursue their interests. Energizer Canada and Walmart are celebrating and showcasing the importance of STEM [science, technology, engineering and math] to Canada’s next generation of thinkers and innovators.

Walmart Stem

Actua, a national Canadian charity, has shared with Energizer some hands-on STEM activities that children can do with their parents. Worksheets are available online for free to download:  http://see.walmart.ca/energizer/en

Nurture a Love for Science and Math in Your Child

Why is Energizer Canada involved? Energizer® EcoAdvanced is the brand’s longest lasting alkaline battery and the world’s first AA battery made from 4% recycled batteries. EcoAdvanced was developed by their award winning scientists using breakthrough technology, made possible by advancements in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) fields.

Actua is Canada’s leading science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education outreach organization for youth aged 6 to 16 years. Each year, they inspire over 225,000 youth to pursue further studies and careers in STEM. Actua is a registered charity and provides hands-on, interactive education experiences.

My 19-year-old niece is attending her first year of university in the United States, studying biochemical engineering. She was one of a handful of women who were accepted into the program – girl power! I’d love to see more girls pursuing STEM.

How to make an easy salad dressing? You don’t need more than a few minutes, and the ingredients which are probably already in your pantry.

I make this easy salad dressing recipe practically every day as it can be used as a base for many salads. This easy salad dressing can be used as a green salad dressing, or in coleslaw, or as a cold pasta salad dressing as well. You can add other spices, such as sage, marjoram, oregano, dried parsley, dried basil, for added flavour. Or you can add mayonnaise for a creamy, delicious version.

Easy Salad Dressing

2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

2 tablespoons red wine vinegar

1 tablespoon mustard

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1/2 teaspoon sea salt

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

optional: 1 tablespoon mayonnaise

Mix all ingredients together until smooth. Double or triple the recipe and put into a small mason jar to have dressing at the ready.

If you’re looking for casual lodging for the family in The Outer Banks, North Carolina, then Waves Village Resort in Rodanthe is a wonderful choice.

Waves Village Watersports Resort offers guests spacious, sound-front vacation rental accommodations with the best of watersports and wind sports at your doorstep. Think walk-around-barefoot, laid-back, casual lodging in the Outer Banks – which is what you want when going on a beach vacation!

Waves Village is the perfect place to stay in the Outer Banks if you’re travelling with a large family, or several families to share together. The resort is pet friendly too, so you can bring your furry friends on vacation with you.

The condos have three bedrooms and three bathrooms, private hot tubs on the balconies, gas grills, 50” widescreen TVs with surround sound, and full kitchens. What’s more, there are views of the water and sunsets.

I stayed in the Surf Shack, which has three bedrooms and three baths, LCD TV, surround sound system, electric fireplace, full kitchen, laundry nook with washer and dryer, dining table for at least six, high ceilings, and what’s best, a waterfront view.  I enjoyed the beach-like décor of the suite as well. My bedroom faced the sound – waking up to the view was a real treat! I’d open the balcony door, and let the fresh ocean air come in.

The resort has Kitty Hawk Kites water sports right on site – you can kiteboard, kayak, hang glide, or stand up paddleboard to your heart’s content. There’s also a restaurant with lovely views, gift shop and surf shop, and a coffee house on-site. I tried stand up paddleboarding for the first time – after a few tries – and falls – I managed to stand up for longer than a few minutes!

The inhouse restaurant, Good Winds Seafood and Wine Bar, offer fresh, local seafood. The restaurant is on the water so the view is lovely, especially during sunset – incredible to watch from the balcony. The place has a casual, laid-back atmosphere – a great OBX dining experience. The restaurant can cater to gluten-free diners, with grilled seafood choices, chicken and fresh salads.

Did I mention the fair trade coffee at the coffee house onsite? Delish!

The resort is within walking distance to Rodanthe beach and the gorgeous boardwalk. It’s also sort of in the middle of the Outer Banks, between Duck and Nags Head to the north, and Hatteras to the south. It’s a good location in the Outer Banks because you can conveniently take day trips around the OBX.

Prices for condo rentals at Waves Village run between $995 to $2,195. Peek season is June 28 to August 8, 2015. For more information and to book, visit WavesVillage.com.

May is National Food Allergy Awareness Month. For approximately 300,000 Canadian children and their families, or one child in every classroom, constant anxiety and stress over the possibility of a deadly allergic reaction is a reality of everyday life.

The most common allergens causing anaphylaxis are nuts, eggs, milk, and insects. The prevalence of allergy is on the rise, with an approximate 18 per cent increase in severe allergic reactions over the past 15 years. Researchers don’t currently know why.

“Navigating the world of allergies can be a daunting and overwhelming task, especially for parents with children affected. There is an increasing realization and appreciation that food allergies do not only affect the child diagnosed, but also their family, friends, classroom, and community,” says Dr. Eyal Grunebaum, Head, Immunology & Allergy.

“Now more than ever before, researchers are poised for major breakthroughs in allergy research that will transform children’s health. In fact, we believe that we can cure allergy in the next decade.”

SickKids believes we can cure allergy in the next decade. Now, more than ever before, researchers are poised on the cusp of major breakthroughs in allergy research and have the tools at their disposal to develop a cure for allergy. Within the next decade, the Allergy Program at SickKids will drive transformation in children’s health to eliminate the health challenges and emotional burden posed by the threat of allergic reaction.

SickKids is doing the following:

  • Exploring ways to turn anaphylaxis into a non-fatal reaction via oral treatment (i.e. pill)
  • Looking at a type of immune cell that can control allergic responses
  • Investigating the ability to predict which children will be able to tolerate allergenic food if it is prepared differently
  • Working to predict, at birth, a predisposition to allergy and seeking to modify or eliminate allergic response through genetic or drug interventions
