If you’re looking to introduce your little ones to gaming, Nintendo’s Wii U  is the best gaming system for the family.

My boys’ first gaming system was Nintendo Wii – when they were about 4 and 6 years old – and the first game they loved playing was Wii Sports Resort. Of course as technology improves, new gaming systems are introduced.

Now with an innovative new Wii U GamePad controller, the Super Mario Maker Deluxe set will allow gamers to play a near-limitless number of intensely creative Super Mario™ levels from players around the world. Mario is on display in Full 1080p HD splendor and thanks to the 32GB hard drive, you have tons of room to save games and download add-ons.

The Deluxe Bundle comes with a high-speed HDMI cable, AC adapter, the GamePad, a sensor bar, the cradle, a stand and a console… and a full game download of Super Mario Maker, an idea book and the 30th Anniversary Mario Modern Color Amiibo.

My kids had been asking for a Wii U for months. The boys love playing Super Mario Bros, and Minecraft for the Wii U. In my opinion, the Nintendo Wii U is the best gaming system for kids under 10, and the first gaming system to introduce to kids.

What’s great is that if you’ve upgraded from a Wii, your games will still be compatible with the Wii U. So all of those Wii favourites like Michael Jackson The Experience and Lego Batman can still be played and enjoyed.

Yoshi’s Woolly World + Yarn Yoshi amiibo – Wii U

On a knitted island filled with many Yarn Yoshis of varying patterns, the evil magikoopa Kamek turns nearly all the Yoshis into bundles of yarn for his master Baby Bowser, scattering them across different worlds. But two Yoshis somehow manage to avoid being transformed, and they set off to pursue Kamek and rescue their woolly friends.

Tap amiibo figures to the Wii U GamePad controller or New Nintendo 3DS XL system to interact with compatible games, no portal needed. Use amiibo in compatible games like Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, Mario Kart 8 and Kirby and the Rainbow Curse.

My family was invited to a special Mother’s Day presented by Rogers #CelebrateMom event at Toronto Blue Jays game. The first 20,000 fans to enter the stadium received a Russell Martin Blue Replica Jersey presented by Rogers.

Once inside the ballpark, moms could visit the 200 level WestJet Flight Deck and be pampered at the Mother’s Day Oasis.

This Mother’s Day, Rogers gave mothers the VIP treatment too! Rogers ran a contest asking people to nominate a deserving mom for her chance to win a weekend getaway for herself and three family members to see the Toronto Blue Jays on Mother’s Day.

Three nominated moms each won a VIP Experience that included round-trip airfare and accommodations, Friday-night welcome dinner, four tickets to the Toronto Blue Jays on May 8 to enjoy in the Rogers Centre™ luxury suite, $250 spending money and more.

Not only were the winning moms able to attend – they were able to bring three members of their loving families along, too! What an amazing way to spend Mother’s Day!

My boys were super excited to watch the Jays play the Los Angeles Dodgers from the Rogers Suite. The suite was divine – beautiful displays of flowers, delicious food and desserts, and of course, the stunning view!

We each received a Blue Jays jersey, had our faces painted,  Gelato cart and the biggest surprise – a visit from Blue Jays Hall-of-Famer Roberto Alomar!

I remember watching the World Series championships in 1992 and 1993, and Robbie was my teen crush (along with Carlos Delgado).  So while my kids thought it was cool to meet him, I was beyond excited.

Thanks you, Rogers, for making my Mother’s Day so special.

Starting a family and having children is a precious gift, one many of us take for granted. Many couples think they can start having kids just like that – but the harsh reality is that conceiving a child does not always come easy.

Most couples who are trying to conceive will become pregnant within a year. For others it can take longer.  In Canada, the incidence of fertility issues have risen in the past several decades, with one in six Canadian couples now experiencing fertility-related problems.

What is supposed to be an exciting and happy time in one’s life can become a significant source of stress and pressure for the couples that experience challenges along the way. If it’s taking longer than you expected to conceive, it’s always a good idea to speak to your doctor about what you should be doing to improve your chances of conceiving. Ontario, along with Quebec, Manitoba and New Brunswick, now offers some form of financial assistance for in-vitro fertilization to couples.

National Infertility Awareness Week is May 12 to 20. Dr. David Greenberg, Family Physician at St. Joseph Hospital, has some tips to help start the family planning.

Don’t “try”

For couples “trying” to conceive, every month can be filled with anxiety and worry. Heightened stress can actually cause more challenges. Therefore, it’s important to live in the moment and just enjoy your partner. Have sex every other day during the fertile window. One study found that intercourse is most likely to result in a pregnancy when it occurs two days before ovulation.

It’s not your fault

There are many reasons why conceiving a baby may be difficult, but it’s not anyone’s fault. Blaming yourself or your partner won’t fix anything and may lead to more problems, including tension in your relationship. Find ways to relax both body and mind, whether by exercising, taking deep breaths, listening to music or doing yoga.

Live healthy

Don’t wait until you find out you’re expecting to start making changes to your diet or exercise routine. Once you decide to start trying to conceive, start behaving like you’re already pregnant by eating right, taking prenatal vitamins, avoiding alcohol, stop smoking  and exercising sensibly. Getting too much exercise or doing frequent strenuous workouts could interfere with ovulation.

Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables, lean protein, whole grains, dairy and healthy sources of fat. Also, go easy on the caffeine: consuming more than 500 milligrams of caffeine a day has been linked with a decrease in fertility in women.

Research has shown that a woman who is overweight (her Body Mass Index, or BMI, is greater than 35) can take twice as long to become pregnant as a woman whose BMI is considered normal. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention urges women to take 400 mcg of folic acid every day for at least one month before getting pregnant to help prevent birth defects.

Track your cycle

Improve your odds of conceiving by having sex on the days when conception is likeliest to happen. Every woman’s body is unique and, when trying to become pregnant, your individual cycle should be taken into consideration. Use an Ovulation Calculator to help you determine your cycle.

The First Response™ Digital Ovulation Test detects and tracks your personal daily baseline levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) to detect your personal LH surge, unlike other ovulation tests that use a pre-set “average” level to determine an LH surge.

Trying to Conceive: National Infertility Awareness Week

Know when to see an expert

A woman and man should consider having an infertility evaluation if the woman is 35 or older and has not become pregnant after six months of having sex regularly without using birth control.  A woman who is under 35 and her partner should consult a fertility specialist if she has failed to become pregnant after one year of having unprotected intercourse on a regular basis.

For those who know someone trying to conceive, the most important thing is to be supportive and understanding. It’s important to consult your doctor to find the best steps for you.

Spring is a great time to conquer projects around the house. I’ve been slowly working on clearing out the basement, updating our kitchen eating area, and now I’m tackling my son’s bedroom.

When you think of bedroom ideas for a boy’s room, what comes to mind? Updating a kid’s room should be a fun project. You can go as bold and fun as possible when updating a kid’s room.

When my oldest son moved from his nursery into a big kid’s room, I opted for something that would last most of his childhood. I’ve always loved a beach/ocean theme for bedroom ideas, so I had painted my son’s room sea blue with hand-painted sailboats along the wall as a border, using a stencil.

This summer my son is turning 12! He’s ready for a tween/teen room, and it’s time for an update. I asked him if he had any bedroom ideas, thinking he was going to ask for a hockey theme with bright red walls to honour the Montreal Canadiens but instead, my son wants a WWE-themed room. Yes, World Wrestling Entertainment… both my boys are huge fans. I’m pretty sure my younger son will be asking me to repaint his room too.

What colour should we choose to paint my son’s room? Since the walls are a darker shade of blue, do we need to prime first? How much paint do we need? So many questions!

Paint Colour Visualizer

My son wants his room painted black. Black?! I think it’s too dark for a kid’s bedroom, no? Perhaps we could do a feature wall in black… or maybe it’s “safer” to paint the walls a bright fresh white to lighten up the space. Though a dark feature wall might look pretty cool…

Luckily, CIL paint has a visualizer tool to help you see how the room would look in various paint colours. Simply upload a photo, then, using the easy-to-navigate tools, mark what part of the room you want painted and which part you don’t want painted.

Bedroom ideas - updating a Kid's Room | amotherworld | www.amotherworld

Next, choose your colours and simply add them to your photo, to see how the walls would look in those colours:

Bedroom Ideas for a Kid's Room | amotherworld | www.amotherworld.com

Updating a Kid's Room | amotherworld | www.amotherworld.com #CILAskAnExpert

The CIL visualizer tool is a wonderful way to allow you to picture how the finished room will look before you head out to buy the paint. Especially if you’re unsure of the brightness or boldness of the colour. This tool can help you see the finished product before even picking up a paint brush.

After viewing the photos, I think the dark grey/black would be too dark and dreary for a kid’s room. If I opted to paint the room white, I could paint the WWE logo on the wall above his bed and add some other cool artwork to dress up the space. Or, we could paint one wall black as a feature wall.

I saved the project by creating an account so I could go back and edit and print my project or colour choices.

What would you do?

CIL Ask An Expert online service

Luckily, CIL paint also complimentary service online called where you can submit a question along with a photo of your space to be redesigned, and an expert will respond to you within two days.

The free CIL Ask An Expert service really helped me decide what colour to use and how to prepare the room for painting. Another great feature is that it is available on any device.

Painting Kids Room CIL Ask an Expert | amotherworld | www.amotherworld.com #CILAskAnExpert

I received an email back from an expert who confirmed that to paint a room of 144 square feet, (as my son’s room is), I would need one gallon to paint two coats. I asked about the mid-tone blue currently on the walls, and if I needed to do anything special to prepare the walls for a lighter paint.

Updating a boy's bedroom to tween | amotherworld | www.amotherworld.com

The CIL expert said that for optimal coverage, it is best to apply a primer such as CIL PLUS interior/exterior problem solving primer (available at RONA), first when transitioning from dark to light paint colours. Primer is always less expensive than the paint, but the CIL Plus paint and primer in one is a great product to do the whole job all at once because it can be used as your primer coat as well. If I decided to not use the CIL Plus paint and primer, I’d have to do one coat as primer, and the required two coats of interior paint. The CIL expert also noted that if I decide to go with the primer, I should use the same CIL paint brand as I’d be using for the finishing paint.

CIL Paint perfect for a kids' bedroom | www.amotherworld.com

If I paint a focal wall in a darker feature colour, the CIL Plus paint-and-primer-in-one products would do a great job for the three remaining walls, with no separate primer to start.

How do I decide? What are your thoughts? Should I paint the room all white, paint it all a dark grey/black, or white with a black feature wall? Stay tuned to see how we decide to transform my son’s room over the coming weeks!

When asked, where is the best family destination within a two-hour drive from Toronto, my answer is the Niagara Region.

There are so many pockets of beauty and entertainment in the Niagara region, including Niagara Falls, Niagara-on-the-Lake, St. Catharines, Twenty Valley, and Niagara’s South Coast.

St. Catharines and Twenty Valley

As you enter the Niagara region, you’ll want to make a stop in Vineland in the town of Lincoln, and St. Catharines. As you travel through Twenty Valley, you’ll pass by century farmhouses, greenhouses, farms and fields. It’s such a lovely drive!

There are plenty of wineries along the rural roads in Twenty Valley, where you’ll find exceptional wines embodying the unique terroir of the Niagara Escarpment. Have lunch at the Vineland Estates Winery Restaurant, and shop for antiques at Vineland Antiques.

Get Out and Play in the Niagara Region Niagara Twenty Valley | amotherworld| www.amotherworld.com

St. Catharines has some trend-setting shops, and restaurants; and if you’re traveling solo or with your partner, pubs and bars too.  Jordan Village is a quaint historic village with lots to explore including one of a kind gift shops, a winery, restaurants, galleries, museums, and trails. Take a hike along the Niagara Escarpment on the Bruce Trail.  Balls Falls Conservation Area is a must-see; you’ll find a waterfall two-thirds the height of Niagara Falls!

Niagara on the Lake

We visit Niagara-on-the-Lake at least once a year, so it has become an annual tradition for our family. The last time we visited, we stayed in the quaint town of Virgil just a few minutes away from the Old Town.

We pack a barbecue and lawn chairs, and enjoy a picnic by the Niagara River along the Wine Route (Niagara Parkway). The boys bring a soccer ball and kick it around before we have our picnic lunch. Bring your bicycles and ride along the paved Niagara River Recreation Trail which runs alongside the Niagara Parkway between Niagara-on-the-Lake and Queenston and then continues on to Fort Erie.

Then we’ll make our way to the downtown area, stopping by to see the boats and the Navy Hall. The original Navy Hall served as the home of Upper Canada’s Parliament from 1772-1796. We’ll also pass by the Fort George National Historic Site, the scene of several battles during the War of 1812.

We love walking into the shops along Queen Street; the well preserved heritage buildings, and flower displays are gorgeous. We’re always tempted to hop on a horse and carriage ride to tour the town.

Get Out and Play in the Niagara Region Niagara on the Lake | amotherworld | www.amotherworld.com

Our favourite stops are the Olde Angel Inn for some pub fare, and Gelato at Carlotta’s for the best Italian ice cream.

For those active families, the flat terrain of Niagara-on-the-Lake makes it ideal for leisurely bicycling. Local companies will rent you a bike for the day.

Niagara-on-the-Lake is also a beautiful spot for a romantic weekend; visit one of the many wineries in the region by bicycle! Then, take in a performance at the Shaw Festival, one of the top repertory companies in the world featuring plays by George Bernard Shaw, musicals, comedies and provocative dramas.

Niagara’s South Coast

My first time visiting Niagara’s South Coast was a memorable one; it was back in high school. A few friends and I hopped into a beat-up “boat” and made our way to the lively community of Port Colborne in Niagara’s South Coast. We camped that memorable weekend! I’d like to go back with the kids to the sandy beaches of Lake Erie. Some of the best beaches include: Crystal Beach, Crescent Beach, Thunder Bay Beach, Waverly Beach, Nickel Beach, Centennial-Cedar Bay Beach, Long Beach and Pleasant Beach.

Get Out and Play in the Niagara Region Pleasant Beach | amotherworld | www.amotherworld.com

Port Colborne was named the World Fishing Network’s Ultimate Fishing Town in 2013, so it’s a great spot for catching perch, walleye, salmon and trout.

My son’s hockey team battled and won the International Silver Stick in Pelham last year. We stayed at the Four Points by Sheraton St. Catharines Niagara Suites in St. Catharines, and enjoyed the opening ceremonies at the new Meridian Centre in St. Catharines, home of the OHL’s Niagara Ice Dogs.

While you’re in this region, discover the thriving arts scene found along Niagara’s South Coast Arts & Culture Route, which covers artist studios, galleries, antiques shops, museums and cultural hot spots from Fort Erie to Wainfleet. Also stop and take a look at the Welland Canal to see ships passing through the lock.  Then, visit Port Dalhousie, where you can stroll Lakeside Park and the kids can enjoy a 5¢ ride on the historic Carousel. There are many boutiques, restaurants and bars to enjoy.

Get Out and Play in the Niagara Region Niagara Welland Canal | amotherworld | www.amotherworld.com

Niagara Falls

Last but certainly not least, Niagara Falls is one site you must see in your lifetime. We’re truly spoiled to live so close to this natural wonder.

Get Out and Play in the Niagara Region Niagara Falls | amotherworld | www.amotherworld.com

The kids love walking in up and down Clifton Hill, playing in the arcades and going into the various fun attractions and museums. For more daring adventurers, see the falls from the Skylon Tower and the Niagara SkyWheel, or take a boat tour that gets you as close as possible to the breathtaking flow of water, power and mist that is the Niagara Falls.

Get Out and Play in the Niagara Region Niagara Sky Wheel | amotherworld | www.amotherworld.com

Kids will never want to leave the massive indoor water parks at Fallsview Indoor Waterpark. Get in touch with nature at the Bird Kingdom or the Butterfly Conservatory at the Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens. And then enjoy some fabulous designer deals at Canada’s largest open-air outlet shopping centre, The Outlet Collection.

For the active family, hike along Canada’s longest footpath, The Bruce Trail which begins in Queenston Heights and ends in Grimsby, at a little bridge crossing 40 Mile Creek.

Where is your favourite spot to visit in the Niagara region?

In searching for the best backdrop to display the Peekaboo Beans Spring line, we decided to take our Peekaboo parcel along on our March Break vacation to Montréal. Peekaboo Beans offers comfortable clothing for kids in cute trendy styles and colours.

We decided it would be an ALL Peekaboo Beans trip – meaning that for the entire trip, only Peekaboo Beans clothes would be worn. I knew the kids’ clothing would be durable and comfortable for the trip.

Peekaboo Beans Spring 2016

We arrived at the Hotel Travelodge in downtown Montreal with kids draped in the Rock Bed Coat (colour: Charcoal) and the Kids Club Jacket, Aqua (from the Summer line). With their velvety soft blanket feel, both these jackets screamed comfort and ease, and were the perfect accompaniment for the six-hour road trip!

Peekaboo Beans takes on Montréal

In a French café on, Misha fashionably modeled the Kids Club Jacket, along with the Over Under Leggings (colour: Cool Blue), while Sohail remained cool and collected in this Roll’n Tee (colour: Paradise Blue) and At Ease Shorts (colour: Cool Blue).

Peekaboo Beans Spring 2016 collection

For dinner at a popular Shawarma restaurant, Misha changed into the Ferris Wheel Dress (colour: cool blue) coupled with the Long Embrace Leggings (colour: Sweetpea), while Sohail lit it up in the Exhibition Tee (colour: Candy Red) – just the right hint of sophistication and style on a night out in the French quarter.

The next morning, after stopping for maple sugar, maple cookies, maple candy, maple syrup and maple fudge, we stopped at the famous Observatoire Mont Royal for some sightseeing and photos. Misha wore the Friendship Tee (colour: Black-Dot) (in what I like to call ‘a pretty polka dot’), paired with Spirit Leggings, Charcoal (from the Fall line).

The kids wore the clothes day and night, on walking tours, in restaurants and even for some good old playing in the park fun. Peekaboo Beans clothes are smart, stylish and above all, comfortable!

It’s hockey tryout season! How to survive hockey tryout season? You mean the kids, or hockey parents?!

Whether your child plays soccer, baseball, basketball or football, you’ll be able to relate to the stress and pressure that is competitive tryouts. We spend so much time with minor sports that it becomes a social life for parents too. While the children will gain amazing experiences and life-long friends, hockey parents do as well.

Hockey tryouts have been described by many parents as the most stressful time of the year. Of course parents hope their child will make it to the best team possible. Kids feel the pressure to perform throughout the season, but especially during tryouts.

So how do parents and kids survive hockey tryout season? Here are some ways to survive hockey tryout season.

How to Survive Hockey Tryout Season

How to Survive Hockey Tryout Season | amotherworld | www.amotherworld.com

Remember that coaches are doing their best

Good coaches don’t like tryouts either. Good coaches do the best job they can in assessing the players, and forming a team. Deciding on those last few players are probably the toughest decisions for coaches. I doubt they take any pleasure in cutting players, especially kids they’ve coached before. While a coach may feel excited to tell a child that he’s moving up a level, he/she sure as heck doesn’t enjoy breaking the news to a child that he’s been cut.

If you have an issue with a coach’s decision, don’t call in the heat of anger. Wait 24 hours before calling or emailing and set up a time to chat in person. Start off the conversation with a positive tone – not ready to start a fight!

Running a youth hockey team takes a lot of effort for these parents who volunteer their time. When you’re talking 70 games and even more practices, coaches spend hours upon hours of time instructing YOUR child. I have huge respect for coaches who volunteer their time, and are essentially an important role in your child’s development and childhood.

Be positive

How you deal with hockey tryouts will leave lasting impressions on your children, and they will see how you react to the process. If you’re anxious and stressed, your children will feel the same. If you’re positive and focus on trying your best and having fun, your child will echo that sentiment.

Try not to compare your kid to other kids, especially in front of the child! It can cause a negative effect on your child’s confidence.

The last thing you want to do is get a reputation as the “trouble maker hockey parent.” According to coaches in older kids’ levels, one of the factors they consider is the parents and family life.

Be supportive

The tryout process is long and stressful, so be positive and encourage your child to do his/her best. As a parent, you can’t “make” your child be amazing at hockey, or anything else for that matter. You can only support and nurture his/her true potential.

How you deal with disappointment is also a teachable moment as a parent’s role. Unfortunately, dealing with disappointment is a lesson kids will eventually have to learn. As parents, it’s important to help them process and deal with disappointment. If you’re proud of whatever team your child makes, you’re showing that you’re supportive.

Don’t add pressure

It’s no surprise that many kids will end up quitting hockey because of the immense pressure from parents and coaches, to the point where playing isn’t fun anymore. While parents think they’re doing a favour by critiquing their child, it may cause them to eventually hate the game.

Instead of offering words of criticism, ask your child how he felt about the tryout, practice or game. Acknowledge his/her efforts and offer positive feedback. Tell them how proud you are of them – no matter what the outcome.

Be realistic

Have you heard this before? “My kid should be playing AA” or “my kid is better than half the guys in AAA.” The truth is, your child may not be ready to play a higher level.

Of course we all think our kids are the best! We’re their parents, after all! A parent can’t objectively evaluate their own child’s performance most of the time. Some parents may be disillusioned about their children’s level of skill, and unfortunately, that’s detrimental to their game.

Don’t be that parent who is trying to live through their child’s successes in order to feel good about themselves. Remember that this is your child’s turn now, and no matter what level, it’s his/her experience, not yours.

Don’t worry about status

The biggest misconception in hockey is that if your child isn’t playing AAA, he/she isn’t going anywhere.  Some hockey coaches say kids playing AAA in Minor Bantam or lower is no better than AA.

Many parents put too much emphasis on the number of letters, and it’s disheartening that some put status above everything else. These players are children. The fact is, kids will develop at different ages and stages. They are still young and all kids need at those ages is ice time and developing skills.

In truth, the 8-year-old superstar at Novice may fade out by Peewee. The kid who makes the AAA may end up sitting on the bench most of the time. For kids who want to pursue serious competitive hockey with the potential for professional, Major Bantam and Minor Midget is where this journey will begin. So if you’re stressing out over your child making Novice AAA, it’s time to re-evaluate!

Remember it’s a game

Playing youth sports for kids is as a social experience as it is a competition. The kids want to win, of course! But what they truly want is simple – to play hockey and have fun! That’s what it all comes down to in their eyes – not the politics or how many goals they scored. While it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of the game, parents often need this reminder.

Let’s put things in perspective. Over 98 percent of the kids playing hockey won’t ever play college or professional hockey. Let that sink in for a minute.

There is nothing you as a parent can do to turn your child into a hockey superstar. You can give your child all the tools needed to help improve his skill and game, but then it’s up to him/her to figure out what to do with it.

If the love for the game isn’t there, you can’t force anything. All you can do as a parent is be supportive of your child, and allow your child to get out there and do his best and have fun.
