My friend Rebecca wrote a piece about Where is the Village, inspired by the little child who managed to enter the gorilla exhibit at the Cincinati Zoo.

Many were quick to judge the parents losing sight of their child. If you’re not a parent, you can’t offer an opinion. Sorry. And if you are a parent and it hasn’t happened to you yet, hold on. Some day it will, even for a micro second.

It was 4:30pm in the afternoon when the phone rang. It was the school.

My kids were outside playing. Was it my third-grade son’s teacher calling to address my son’s silly behaviour in class again?

Or was it my sixth-grader’s teacher calling to share her concerns about my son’s recent math test results?

No. it was the school office calling to see if I by chance knew where my nine-year-old son’s best friend could be. Did he say anything to my son about going to a friend’s after school? Was he with us?

Usually his babysitter picks him up by car, and they drive home. But this day, the boy wasn’t at his usual spot.

I panicked for the boy. I thought of his mother.

So of course, I ran outside, and called my son to ask him if his friend said anything at all to him about where he was going after school.

Could he have gone to his friend’s house? To the park? Was he hanging around the school?

The village is still there.

My boys and their neighbourhood friends rode their bicycles to the park to look for him. They then rode to the school to see if they heard any word.

The boy was technically missing for about an hour.

If I was the mom with the missing child, I would want everyone to help me.

Just then, the boy enters the front doors of the school with his babysitter.

The babysitter had arrived late to pick the boy up from school. Because his sitter arrived late, the boy walked over to the park and played with a friend for a while. He then walked all the way home, and knocked on the door. But no one was there, so he walked to the park closest to his house and waited. He was scared, and waited there.

Of course, the boy now knows what to do should his sitter ever be late again.

There have been many moments where this has happened, just a split second at the grocery or toy store when you lose sight of your child for a moment and the panic sets in.

You could only hope there are other people who would drop everything to help in a situation like this.

What if it were your child.

Do you even have to put yourself in that situation? Put yourself in the other person’s shoes? You just help.

My boys and their friends were rewarded with freezies and thank-yous by the school admin and teachers who were frantically searching and making phone calls.

My nine-year-old met up with his best friend later, and I chatted with his mom, who hugged me and thanked us for our concern and efforts.

Of course we would help. We would expect anyone to do the same.

But I guess the world out there isn’t as kind as we may be. Some people do look the other way.

I do believe there are still good people out there willing to lend a helping hand.

The village is still there – you just need to find it.

The warmer weather is finally here which means I’m wearing a lot of pastels and white! My wardrobe is pretty casual most of the time. I love being an Aventura ambassador because Aventura makes stylish, casual and comfortable clothing for women with thought to both people and the environment.

Here is my Aventura Life Spring Outfit of the Day #AventuraLife:

Over the long weekend, my family and I went on a whirlwind trip to charming Quebec City. Expedia.ca helped me with choosing the right hotel with all the amenities that we need for our family.

After searching the hotels, and viewing prices along with hotel ratings, we chose Hotel Manoir Victoria. The reviews for this four-star hotel, and the fact that the hotel is family friendly, convinced me it was the best accommodations in Quebec City for our family.

Built in 1830, this grand, Victorian hotel in historic Old Québec is just a short walk to many attractions including Notre-Dame Basilique, La Citadel, Planes d’Abraham, Musée de l’Amérique Francophone and Artillery Park. A leisurely stroll also leads to the waterfront, with restaurants, cafes and little shops along the way.

I booked a Grand Luxury Room with two queen beds through Expedia.ca, which is larger than a standard room – which is much needed when you have kids running around. Our room faced Rue St. Jean, which was quite noisy the Friday night. But we did have the best view for people watching!

Upscale rooms feature contemporary or traditional décor. All have iPod docks, flat-screen TVs, and tea and coffee machines – ours had a Keurig. The room has a mini-bar and mini-fridge; there are plenty of souvenir shops nearby to stock up on water/drinks and snacks.

Selected suites and upgraded rooms have modern ambient fireplaces, separate living areas and Nespresso coffeemakers. There’s a stylish bistro restaurant and a chic dining area for breakfast, which is an additional cost.

Other amenities include an indoor pool, a sauna and a spa, as well as an exercise room. The indoor pool is a decent size; there is a lifeguard on duty.

Le SPA du Manoir has massage/treatment rooms, where you can be pampered with massages, facials, body wraps, and body scrubs. I didn’t have a chance to enjoy some “me-time”, which I would have welcomed after walking the city all day! If you need babysitting, there is a 24-hour front desk Babysitting or childcare for a fee.

The lobby area is large and has a lovely sitting area and library. There is also a computer with internet for guests’ use.

Because I have an account with Expedia.ca, I ended up saving 10% – which came to $94.70 savings! Valet parking is an additional $25 a day with in and out privileges, although you won’t need to drive around in the old town – you can see everything on foot!

Expedia.ca also has other great Quebec City hotels you can check out here.

Stay tuned for my next post on what we did and saw during our Quebec City family visit, and what to do in Quebec City.

What do you get when a father remarries and his new wife has a sketchy past with three adult sons, all from different fathers?

The Steps – a blended family comedy/drama about two disparate families, with all their issues and baggage, learn to come together over the course of a weekend. The most recent export from last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, “The Steps” brings new life to the dysfunctional family comedy.

Jason Ritter plays Jeff, a corporate financial planner in New York, who loses his job, apartment and fiancée. He and his free-spirited sister Marla, played by Emmanuelle Chriqui, are invited by their wealthy yet neglectful father, Ed (James Brolin) to spend the weekend at a lake house in northern Ontario he built for his new wife, Sherry (Christine Lahti).

The weekend will be a chance for Jeff and Marla to hear their dad’s big announcement, and meet Sherry’s kids – David (an energy drink guzzling paintball salesman); his sweet but simple wife, Tammy; brother, Keith (a depressed musician wearing a SCRAM bracelet); and Sherry’s youngest, Sam (a genius of Indian descent).

But it’s all downhill from there. Ed and Sherry announce their plans to adopt Mingmei, an orphaned girl from China. On Monday, a social worker will arrive to interview them all. Sherry’s planned a weekend of bonding activities designed to turn them into a happy, loving blended family.

Easier said than done. When Jeff discovers that his stepmom has been keeping a scandalous secret, the family could be destroyed forever. But Jeff has been keeping a few secrets of his own.

Jason Ritter breathes life into the character of Jeff, with instinctual comedic humour as evidenced in the nunchuck bar scene. Christine Lahti morphs into the role of sassy cougar step-mom so effortlessly, you forget she’s the same actress who played Dr. Kathryn Austin in Chicago Hope.

Directed by indie veteran Andrew Currie, The Steps is a cute and charming family drama/comedy with some tender moments throughout the film. The film was mostly shot in Parry Sound, Ontario, as well as a few scenes shot in Toronto.

Family – whether traditional, or blended – is the theme of The Steps, and a sweet and fun reminder that family is the most important and rewarding treasure one can have.

The Steps will be released in theatres on June 3rd in Halifax, Toronto, Calgary and Edmonton, and June 19 in Vancouver.

As you know, I have partnered with CIL Paint to update my son’s child-to-teen bedroom. It was time for a teen boy bedroom update, and I can’t wait to show you the big reveal!

My almost-12-year-old son requested a WWE-themed room. Since the WWE logo is white, black and red, I wanted to use one of these colours for the room’s walls and décor.

WWE logo

Although my tween-going-on-teen son wanted the walls painted black, or a feature wall in black, I wasn’t keen on going so dark for his teen boy bedroom update. What if we decided to sell the house? We would have to repaint it a light colour, and I wasn’t up for having to paint again possibly in a year or two.

The CIL Paint Colour Visualizer gave me a great idea of what the room would look like, and the dark colour looked too dreary for a kid’s room. By painting the room white, I would be able to paint the WWE logo on the wall above his bed and in other places around the room.

Updating a Kid's Room | amotherworld | www.amotherworld.com

Bedding is also an important feature in any bedroom update, and it’s easy to pull colours from it for paint inspiration. I searched in store and online to find a WWE themed comforter. Apparently, it’s harder than you think to find WWE merchandise in-store here in Canada!

WWE bedding_528x496

I found this lovely duvet cover and pillow set on eBay. Doesn’t the black duvet look striking against the white walls? Once I saw this bedding, I decided we should go with CIL PLUS Eggshell for hallways, family rooms & kids’ rooms in…

CIL white on white

CIL Paint perfect for a kids' bedroom | www.amotherworld.com

White on White 30GY 88/014. I absolutely love LOVE this shade of white, so much so that I am going to have our living and dining space painted in the same shade.

CIL Ask An Expert online service

The CIL Ask An Expert service played a large role in helping me decide how to prepare the room for painting, and how much paint I would need. To be honest, I haven’t painted before! My husband has painted smaller rooms, and we’ve hired professionals to paint larger spaces in our home. But this time, I was ready to take on the challenge but needed some guidance from a CIL Expert. How many coats would I need? Should I use a primer first? What kind of paint would work best for a child’s room? What is the difference between eggshell and flat?

I took the CIL Expert’s advice to apply a CIL PLUS problem solving primer(available exclusively  at RONA) first to cover the mid-tone blue, and then apply two coats of CIL PLUS White on White (30GY 88/014) paint. This paint is specifically formulated for higher-traffic areas such as hallways, family rooms and kids’ rooms plus it is virtually odorless and easy to apply. I wanted to use a paint that has low VOCs – (volatile organic compounds) – so we wouldn’t have to breathe in that new paint smell.

Teen Boy Bedroom Update: The Big Reveal!

Now for the big reveal! We went from baby boy blue, to fresh and new! Here is the before:

Before

And here is the after:

Brighter and cleaner!

Creating the Stencil

I enlarged the WWE logo on my printer, and printed the image to fit nine pages. Then, I created a stencil by cutting out the area that would be painted black , traced it on the wall with a ruler and pencil and painted it with a thin layer of paint.  Then, I cut out the red strip at the bottom of the logo, traced it, and painted it red.

While the CIL palette does not include a true deep black, as suggested by the CIL Expert I added a 16 oz. of black colourant to an accent base in Dark Secret 00NN 05/000 to get a truer shade of black. Candy Apple 04YR 11/537 also worked well for the red accent in the WWE logo.

DSC_0260_689x544

I ordered some WWE posters to dress the other walls. And I took an old photo frame insert, painted it black, and added Velcro so I can hang up his WWE belts for easy removal.

DSC_0377_700x504

Of course, we had to save one wall for my son’s hockey photos and plaques!

Hockey pics_797x568

I swapped out the blue gingham lamp for a taller, black one.

I love the way my son’s room turned out! The CIL paint visualizer tool helped me decide my paint colour choice, before heading to the paint store. The CIL Ask An Expert service helped me feel confident about  my colour and product choices and completing this DIY teen bedroom update by myself. In fact, I may continue my DIY home update, and tackle my younger son’s bedroom and my office next!

So what do you think of this teen boy bedroom update big reveal?

TALIA- Jersey Burnout Tank Top

https://www.picoum.com/products/anna-1819

Made with high quality fabrics, Lucky 7 garments have a vintage feel. Garments are designed and made in Montreal. Items are printed, treated and pre-washed.

I love that their tops and shirts are soft and the fabric feels worn-in. Made in breathable, lightweight fabric, the collection is and is super comfortable no matter what the occasion. I can wear a bandeau with the ANNA since the back is open. The TALIA fabric has a sheen to it, so I feel as though you can dress this up a bit.

Summer is creeping up! The kids are getting antsy, and starting to get bored and restless at school. As the weather warms up, they are spending their off-school time outside – rollerblading, playing road hockey, bike riding, throwing around the baseball. I’ll call them in for dinner, and they’ll be back outside again.

This is also the time of year when I start to panic. How will I be able to work at home with the kids during summer break?

As a work-at-home mom, I don’t have the boys in daycare. Why add the expense if I’m already home? Working at home offers me the flexibility to work throughout the day and into the evening as well.

But summer break is a whole other beast. My boys are much older now – 9 and 11 – so they can play independently without my constant supervision. The issue is, they fight. A lot.

The two of them bicker like the Odd Couple, and when tension rises, bad words will be exchanged, and finally, wrestling moves will inevitably occur. I’m constantly refereering the two of them in the ring, any time anywhere. It could be at home, outside or even in the middle of the grocery store.

The panic sets in when I realize that there is no possible way that the two of them will get along all summer long. I need to separate them for part of the days… but I still need to work! How can I work at home with kids during summer break?

What are some options?

How to Work at Home with Kids During Summer Break

How to Work at Home with Kids During Summer Break | amotherworld | www.amotherworld.com

Trade Time

If you have friends or neighbours who are also in the same predicament, trade watching a few times a week.  Each of you will then have dedicated time to focus on work.

Play dates

I don’t know about your kids, but mine don’t argue or fight when they have company. Often having three or four kids around is more peaceful than having just my two! Plan workdays while the kids have friends over.

Schedule Wisely

Set up a work schedule, so that the kids know which hours/days are play time and which days are dedicated to work. My goal is to have three mornings a week dedicated to work so that our afternoons are free. I bought us season passes to Canada’s Wonderland so we can take off and go for a few hours whenever we feel like it.

Relatives

Does grandma want to watch the kids for a week? Summer is a great time for kids to spend time with their relatives and grandparents at their home or cottage.

Hire a Teen

Have a teen come watch the kids while you work. Since teens are closer in age to the kids, they usually have a blast playing, and you can have some dedicated work time.  I’ve done this before a few summers ago. The sitter would come in the afternoon, and take the kids to the park for a few hours while I could dedicate time to work.

Summer Camps

I can’t justify full day camps if I’m home. So set up various summer programs. Spread the sessions throughout the summer. Look for half-day activities such as swim lessons, tennis lessons or day camps. I’ve set up a hockey clinic for one week, and a basketball camp for another week – mornings only.

But if you’ve waited too long – like me – some of the programs you want to register for are already booked. Some find the registration process for Parks & Recreation very stressful, like Rebecca over at Playground Confidential. Programs fill as quickly as you are able to access the website to register.

For a minimal fee, my kids could take language lessons that the school board offers for the month of July. I’ve done this for two summers, however, they didn’t retain a lick of Italian! Only the bad words, and those were taught by my lovely husband.

In our town, there are only a few half-day camp options, like basketball or tennis. Check with your town leisure guides for options. You’re looking at about $150 to $175 for a half day camp per week. With two or more kids, the cost can quickly add up.

I do know one thing – kids need some down time in the summer, so they can just hang out and play outside. Go to the park. Ride their bikes. Sit around and eat popsicles, and have water gun fights with their friends. Schedules are lovely, but it’s also welcoming to not be on a strict schedule, and be spontaneous.

What will your kids be doing this summer break?

Summer is just around the corner which means pretty pedicured feet, flowing dresses and mini-skirts. Time to show off those great legs! Since I wear pants most of the winter, my legs are looking a little rough, and in need of some TLC… a good wax or shave isn’t going to cut it. It’s time to get those legs out of hibernation, and get ready for great legs this summer!

Some women don’t feel comfortable showing off those gams! About three-quarters of Canadian women experience swollen legs, varicose veins, and the feeling of heavy, painful and tired legs. These symptoms get worse in the summer too.

I didn’t know there is an actual medical term for these symptoms, called chronic venous insufficiency or CVI. Our daily lifestyle habits such as prolonged sitting or standing can cause CVI symptoms. When blood flow in the lower legs is impaired, it pools in the lower limbs causing pain, swelling, heaviness, tiredness and varicose veins.

Three-quarters of Canadian women say they have experienced at least one CVI symptom at some point in time, yet less than one in five women are aware of the condition.

While most women have experienced at least one symptom of CVI at some point in time in their lives, more than half of Canadian women experience tired legs, and 1 in 5 suffer from heavy legs and varicose veins.

It’s no wonder many of us are self-conscious about baring our legs in the warm summer months. So how do we get great legs this summer?

Here are some simple tips to get your great legs ready for summer.

5 Ways to Get Great Legs this Summer

5 Ways to Get Great Legs this Summer | amotherworld | www.amotherworld.com

Get those legs moving

Exercise is good for the body for many reasons, but it’s also good for your legs. Research shows more than 60 per cent of women spend more than four hours a day on sedentary activities, like watching TV and sitting at a desk.

So, get up from your desk often, ideally every hour and walk around the office. Rather than take a coffee break while sitting, go out for a quick power walk. Also, do stretches or leg exercises like squats, or if you can, do leg weights at home or at the gym to strengthen those muscles.

Eat well for good circulation

Eating well not only does your heart and body good, but also your legs. A balanced diet that includes plenty of fibre, fresh fruits and vegetables can help maintain good leg vein circulation and keep your heart healthy. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water too!

Good Posture

Did you know that your posture can also affect how your legs feel? Make sure you keep your shoulders back, chest up and stomach pulled in. But you need to also remember “leg posture” – make a conscious effort not to cross your legs, or at least not for a long period of time, as crossing your legs can restrict blood flow to and from the legs! Reminding yourself about maintain a good posture will help throughout the day.

5 Ways to Get Great Legs this Summer | amotherworld

Give your legs a boost with Antistax™

Approved by Health Canada, Antistax™ is an herbal medicine that contains Red Vine Leaf Extract. Pharmacologists analyzed the active ingredient of the Red Vine Leaf and developed it into an effective extract. This herbal extract is the basis of Antistax™, which when used has been shown to improve lower leg blood flow, reduce swelling (lower leg edema) and relieve the feeling of pain, heaviness and tiredness. Antistax™ is available in the supplement section of your local pharmacy. Red Vine Leaf Extract has been used for decades, beginning with French farmers who made infusions and poultices from vine leaves to treat their heavy, swollen and painful legs.

Love your legs

While Canadian women are investing in their hair and skin, they are not showing their legs the same amount of care. Your legs are screaming for attention! Stimulate circulation in your legs by gently massaging them with your hands or a natural bristle brush in the shower. Help the circulation and the flexibility in your legs too by using a mix of hot and cold bursts of water.

Theresa Caputo, from TLC’s hit show, Long Island Medium, will be appearing live at Air Canada Centre on Saturday, June 18th at 7:30 p.m.!

I’ve been watching Long Island Medium since it first aired, and I’m amazed by the help that Theresa offers to loved ones. Theresa also has a bubbly, outgoing personality… at the Long Island accent is always fun. If you know me well, you know that I am a huge fan of the paranormal, and I do believe that some mediums truly have a gift.

“The Experience” brings Theresa face-to-face with her fans, as she lets spirit guide her through the audience. Theresa will share personal stories about her life and explain how her gift works. She will deliver healing messages to audience members and give people comfort knowing that their loved ones who passed are still with them.

“The experience isn’t about believing in mediums. It’s about witnessing something life-changing,” says Theresa Caputo. “It’s like Long Island Medium live, witnessing first-hand spirit communication.”

Now just a warning – this live event is at the Air Canada Centre, so there will be a lot of people attending. Obviously she won’t be giving many readings – maybe a handful to a few likely sitting near the stage. I’ve heard people who attend get their hopes up for a reading only become disappointed. This is more of an “experience” rather than a “reading”, so you need to remember that before you attend.

Having just wrapped its sixth season, the highly-rated show Long Island Medium follows Theresa’s life as a typical Long Island wife and mom with one very big difference…she can communicate with the dead. Since she cannot “turn off” this gift, messages from departed loved ones can come through at any time, which lead to spontaneous readings with those she encounters.

Theresa has been a practicing medium for over 15 years. She helps individuals find closure by delivering healing messages. For Theresa, this is not just her job… this is her life.

Tickets can be purchased at Ticketmaster.ca, 1-855-985-5000, or Air Canada Centre Box Office. Tickets start at $39.75 (plus applicable service charges) and are subject to change. Purchasing a ticket does not guarantee a reading.

Gosh I miss wheat and the gluten that makes those yummy breads so soft and chewy!  Why do I miss them? Well, I have been gluten free for about three years now.

I’ve had issues with my stomach – irritation, inflammation, bloating – all due to certain foods in my diet, including soy, wheat and gluten. Because of the pain and discomfort, I was forced to cut these ingredients out of my diet to help my stomach heal.

Did you know that wheat can stay in your system for several months? It took a good year to heal my gut, and feel back to normal again. A hairstylist even noticed by touching my hair – he asked me if I had done something differently in the last six months, because I had new hair growth which was thicker and fuller than the bottom half of my hair. I realized that the new hair growth occurred after I had cut out wheat and gluten from my diet!

May is Celiac Awareness Month, a good time to learn about what gluten and gluten sensitivities really are, and how they impact many Canadians. I’m lucky I’m not Celiac; celiac disease is a medical condition in which the absorptive surface of the small intestine is damaged by gluten. People with celiac disease can’t eat gluten, otherwise their body wouldn’t be able to absorb nutrients which are necessary for good health. If I happen to have a trace of gluten, I won’t suffer. But those with celiac have to avoid cross-contamination.

Going gluten free has become a complete lifestyle change – and I’ll never go back. My stomach has since healed, and I feel so much better. While I’m often tempted to have “just a bite”, giving in to the craving is not worth the havoc it wreaks on my body.

Bread? Pasta? Desserts? They don’t even faze me. I bake my own bread, I’ve found a great-tasting pasta, and I bake my own gluten-free desserts.

But snacking is another issue. I love crunchy, crispy, salty snacks.

Quaker® Crispy Minis® rice chips are deliciously crispy with a light texture. They are made from grains like rice and corn then sprinkled with a tasty, bold seasoning.

With flavours like Tortilla Style Smoky Chipotle and Creamy Ranch, I can get that crunch satisfaction packed with a flavour punch. Sweet Chili, Ketchup and Sour Cream and Onion are also favourites in our home. All of these snacks are certified gluten and wheat free!

A serving size of 20 grams has 90 calories and 14 grams of carbohydrates.  Of course I probably couldn’t limit myself to just one serving! But even having two servings is still within a good calorie count.

If you’re also sensitive to soy ingredients, Quaker® Crispy Minis® Tortilla Style Smoky Chipotle Rice Chips and Tortilla Style Creamy Ranch Rice Chips both don’t contain soy, and neither does the Caramel Kettle Corn Flavour Rice Chip.

Certified gluten-free by the Canadian Celiac Association, Crispy Minis rice chips are a tasty gluten-free snack that comes in a variety of delicious flavours.
