Yesterday, it was news about popcorn being the best snack food.

Today, it’s chocolate!

Oh goody!

A new study suggests that people who eat chocolate regularly tend to be thinner.  Those who ate chocolate a few times a week were, on average, slimmer than those who ate it occasionally.

Scientists believe that chocolate contains ingredients that may favour weight loss rather than fat synthesis.

The key is how often you eat chocolate that is important, rather than how much of it you eat. The study found no link with quantity consumed.

For example, having a small piece of dark chocolate a day may be good for you; it contains antioxidants. Other studies says chocolate may be good for the heart.

But don’t be quick to start consuming loads of chocolate!

More clinical trials will have to be conducted.

I don’t remember how but I stumbled on this website.  I don’t remember how I scrolled down to read the comments.

But I did. And I’m flabbergasted.

“I’m 12 , i’m 4’11″ & i weigh around 110 lbs. that might not seem a lot but , it is . i want to lose 10-15 lbs AT LEAST.

“I’m only 11 years old, i am 5’3 and weight 135 lbs. My family keeps saying that i am fat and need to lose weight and I agree to. I want to at least lose 10 or 15 pounds fast. I’m a dancer and a model, with this type of body I have I can’t be it. I’ve tried to be on a diet but I cant help it. I hope this website could help me a lot I REALLY WANT LOSE WEIGHT.”

“Hi, I’m 12 years old, turning 13 in April. I am 5’1 and weigh approx. 120lbs. I want to lose between 5-10lbs and lose some weight on my belly and thighs. I’m happy with my actual figure at the moment and I’m aware that my body is changing but I’d just like to lose a bit of weight so I can look good for my 13th and my summer holidays. Please help me. I don’t want to tell my parents, “I’m not close to them, I wish I was. I want to keep it a secret without them getting suspicious. Do WiiFit work? I own one and don’t know if it actually works or not. Any advice?”

“I’m female, 5’2′, 10 years old, 90 pounds, and 29″ waist. I’m thin, but I don’t have a flat belly…My gut is actually pretty flabby. I Irish dance 5 hours a week. Please help asap;I’d like a flat belly by summer!”

“I am nine and I weigh 110 is that normal?”

Kids as young as NINE are writing on these boards, asking for advice, help to lose weight.   NINE.  This is terribly wrong and worrisome.

It’s very sad that children are already so consumed and worried about their weight. Body image and self-esteem issues are becoming really serious problems with our youth.

It’s a slippery slope because while childhood obesity is rising, so are eating disorders.  While school obesity programs are helping some children, it may be also promoting worrisome eating behaviours in kids as well.

In the United States, between 16 and 33 percent of children and adolescents are obese according to the American Obesity Association.  The number of American children under 12 who were hospitalized because of an eating disorder has jumped 119 per cent between 1999 and 2006, according to a clinical report released by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

We need to do something about this NOW.

The big movie release this week was The Hunger Games, however, a huge little known film came out right under the radar called The Raid: Redemption.  Directed and written by Gareth Evans, a Welsh director who has worked within the Indonesian film industry, this film is possibly one of the best action scores and fight sequences in a long time.

The film is about a group of elite SWAT team members who must take down a gang controlled building and their leader.  The entire film takes place mainly within the building and stars Iko Uwais, a mixed martial artist specializing in Indonesian traditional martial art, Silat.

Action films have become repetitive in the last couple of years leaving only the superhero genre to really allow any kind of interesting action story to be told. Its sad when only one kind of story telling seems to be told, popular or not. I don’t care if it makes a ton of money or if it’s a bomb.  A good movie is a good movie – obviously everyone has their preference of what is good, but it’s that very preference that should make variety happen.

The fighting in the film has what I like to call many “Holy S!$#” moments because you cannot hold back some of the incredible blows that are given to and by the cops. I refuse to go into any real detail about the scenes but there were moments in the film where I said to myself “there is no way they can beat that!” and they did!

Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park and Joseph Trapanese of Tron: Legacy soundtrack remade the score for the film for the US release. The decision to have Mike Shinoda do the score is based on a recent trend in movies that filmmakers call upon legit musicians to do their scores such Hanna, Tron: Legacy, and Social Network.

Often musicians come from a different place with the music than a traditional composer; musicians might push the boundaries or accelerate the energy of a particular sequence. I also feel that musicians don’t give that typical “soundtrack” music but actual music that you could listen to completely separately.

The soundtrack for the Raid was very reminiscent of John Carpenter’s scores who often uses heavy 80’s style synthesizers and drums, while in the Raid the film uses very similar syntheses but more techno/Linkin Park style drums. The music gives the movie a fun tone against the violent and often intense music, since the film is full of grind house classic references and homage’s to that era the music carries traces of that as well specifically The Warriors and Escape from New York The music is very minimal and never overpowering (which is common among today’s films) but were used effectively by the 70’s Grindhouse.

The film is in subtitles; get over your fear of subtitles because this movie is that awesome you’ll may have to watch the movie twice to get every little thing that happens in the story but its not a bad ride the second time around.

I don’t recommend this film for the whole family because there is so much violence that it would be completely inappropriate for young kids. Tuck the kids in, let mommy and daddy watch the movie and have a blast!

Pop away!  Popcorn is “the perfect snack food.”

A new study says that popcorn contains more healthy antioxidants than some fruits and vegetables.

Researchers from the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania found popcorn contains up to 300 milligrams of polyphenols, an antioxidant that is known to lower cholesterol and help prevent certain types of cancer.

But hold on…

This doesn’t include popcorn with butter, oil and sat, like movie theatre popcorn.

Making it at home is better and air-popped is the healthiest choice.

The hulls of the popcorn, you know that stuff that gets stuck in your teeth?  That’s the best part – they contain the highest concentration of the healthy antioxidant and fibre.

And it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t eat your fruits and veggies anymore either.  Popcorn is a great alternative to snack food.

“Popcorn may be the perfect snack food,” study author Joe Vinson, a chemist at the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania, said in a statement.

“It’s the only snack that is 100 percent whole grain.”

So how can you spice up popcorn?  Try some chili powder, garlic powder

A serving size no larger than 4 cups of air-popped popcorn -less if it is not air-popped – is the best option.

It was a warm June evening.  My hair had that tousled look and I was wearing a dress that made me feel very fun and flirty and of course my purple stilettos were to die for.

I was going over to a gentleman friend’s house for a drink. I hadn’t been on the dating scene for long, so everything was an unwritten page to me.

I wasn’t sure if this was just a drink with a friend, or a drink with a possible “more than a friend”. I just knew that I was all dressed up and having a great hair day!

Now, this friend was a few years my senior.  I wouldn’t say that be was old enough to be my father but there was for sure a bit of a generational gap. I was intrigued by his maturity and life experiences and he definitely knew how to treat a lady, just when I thought “chivalry was dead.” Dating an older man was new to me.

Although I enjoyed his company and it was refreshing to have my chair pulled out for me, I was still questioning if the age gap was going to be an issue for me. I was only 38… usually to prep for conversation on a date, I would recap current events, the weather and things that my kids were up to.

I know what you’re thinking – ‘she prepped conversation’.  Well  yes I did!  It had been 22 years since I had been dating.  With this guy, I was already forced to think about Freedom 55 and playing golf in Arizona!

Before the “date”, he told me to show myself in, thinking he would be waiting for me outside on the patio and wouldn’t hear me knock. So as he requested, I just walked in.

To my surprise, he was not on the patio.  Although it was a warm June evening as I had mentioned, I felt heat instantly as I entered the room… and what did I see?  The flames of a roaring fire!

Instantly wondering why anyone would have a roaring fire indoors in June unless you were making Smores, I glimpsed over to lay my eyes upon an older gentleman in his “tighty whities”, perched on the sofa!

This was much like the beloved scene from Seinfeld with George Costanza posing on the velvet loveseat!  Beads of sweat rolled off his forehead as he looked up and said to me in a somewhat sultry voice, “I was warm”.

It took everything out of me not to laugh out loud as I replied:  “Perhaps if you didn’t have a roaring fire in the middle of June, you might have been able to keep your clothes on.”

It was at this point I realized that this was how this guy perceived romance, and what’s worse…what he thought was sexy!!!   Was this a generational thing? Maybe not, but the girls of my era find Mark Wahlberg in a pair of Calvin Klein boxer briefs much more enticing than a pair of Fruit of the Looms!

Needless to say, I was speechless but I stayed and had a very quick and uncomfortable drink. I sat perched on the sofa near the roaring fire that wilted my great hair, until I could use the excuse of picking a kid up from a friend’s house.

As sweet as he was, this just wasn’t where I wanted to be….so until I know for sure that age does make a difference; I will stick to the “GAP” being only a label in my clothes and not a descriptive word between me and guy’s generations!

Like most of us, I always want the skinny on what’s the latest and greatest…especially when it comes to décor. Trying to stay ahead of the curve is always the name of the game and when it comes to design, one has to be quick if they want to come out on top.

For spring, interior design is definitely seeing an influence from its fashion and accessory counterparts.  Great colour palates, bold patterns and rich metals are ruling the roost.

If you want to jump on board with what’s hot for spring in the home, take a look at these top 5 home décor trends:

1.  Metallics

Rich metals are on fire right now in terms of décor, with gold and brass experiencing a real renaissance. Nothing adds a dash of glamour and warmth to a space like a hit of shiny metal.  Adding metallic accessories is an easy and affordable way to richen up a space and can easily be changed out down the road.  If you’re feeling especially brave, try adding some brass lightening or hardware because if you ask me, gold is most definitely the most delightful metal of the bunch!

2.  Rich Colour

Like we’re seeing on the runways, the palate for spring is both bold and fresh.  Strong, rich shades (as with year’s Pantone colour of the year, Tangerine Tango) are sharing the spotlight with soft and sweet sherbet hues.  If your main furniture pieces are fairly neutral in tone, try adding a dash of colour by changing out throw pillows and accessories.  Use what you already have to decide the palate that works best for your space and remember that for spring, perhaps the easiest way to add beautiful colour is with the addition of fresh flowers.

3.  Bold Pattern

Open up any décor magazine and you’ll see pattern mixed on top of pattern, with a little more thrown in for good measure.  From Ikats to Suzanis and from florals to animal prints, bold pattern mixing is most definitely in vogue.  As with colour, the easiest way to work with this trend is to try it out in small doses…investing in some new throw pillows or a perhaps a great vintage Persian rug, is a quick way to add a lot of punch to your space.  Try to balance things out by pairing geometrics on top of florals and large scale patterns with small ones and don’t be afraid to experiment- with this trend, there really are no rules.

4.  Plants

Similarly to gold, the house plant is experiencing a bit of a rebirth.  Gone are the days of hanging spider plants and window sills cluttered with pots.  A modern take on the proverbial green thumb, calls for single large scale plants as the focal point in a room.  And the two species on the top of springs wish list…the Fiddle Fig and the Indoor Orange/citrus tree.  Both add a natural but oh so graphic punch to any space.

5. Bar Carts

Nothing screams the joy of spring more than the idea of cocktails with friends on a sunny deck.  Perhaps the huge trend towards decorating with bar carts is in part due to our love of warm weather entertaining.  Whatever the cause, bar carts and decorating with all that goes with them, is a decidedly hot trend for spring…and the more glamorous the cart, the better.
