Have you finished your shopping list yet?

The gift giving season can be very expensive, especially if you have a large family to buy gifts for and are forced to remain on a very tight budget. People often talk about ‘the holiday hangover’ when the January credit card bill comes around, and we realize just how far over our heads we went with spending.

The worst part of the post-holiday credit card bill is we know we have to pay it off sooner rather than later; otherwise, we risk paying higher credit card interest rates, and the bill becomes even more expensive.  Finding a credit card with the best possible interest rate for our budgets is tough enough because it’s implanted in our brains that we must rely on rates that the bank says we have to pay.

However, the banks aren’t as controlling as they once were because online resources such as www.lowestrates.ca, provide us with lists of all the credit card operators available, and there best advertised credit card interest rates.  Online browsing and shopping is so commonplace these days that it makes sense for us to search for personal financial information that helps us save time, money, and the ability to decide how much we will pay on our terms.

The best part of this service is it extends beyond the holidays, and provides us with options to save money all throughout the year.  The holidays are one of the most universal cash-crunch times of our lives, but budgets can be difficult to maintain when we least expect it.  A quick search online makes money management a little easier on us – the fact that we can calculate our ideal credit card rate for free helps make the service even more enticing.

It may be the most wonderful time of the year, but wonderful comes with a price that we usually don’t realize until the season is gone and the bills arrive.

How do you plan to stick with your holiday budget?

Enjoy holiday time but be responsible – don’t drink and drive and take a cab!

During December, the LCBO’s “Deflate the Elephant” campaign is partnering with Co-op Cabs and Cabcom (the advertisements on the top of cabs) in Toronto to encourage people to plan ahead and get home safely this holiday season.

Every Saturday, starting December 8 until December 29, from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m., there will be a small number of specially outfitted cabs in Toronto with a large lit up elephant sign on the roof. If people spot these special cabs, and hop in, passengers will receive $10 off their ride.

Also, if you spot an elephant cab in the city, take a pic and share on Twitter with the hashtag #TOelephantsighting, you’ll have a chance to win a holiday hosting gift basket.

Avoid having guests drink and drive at your holiday party or after a night on the town and all a Co-op Cab.

The Deflate the Elephant campaign website has great hosting tips with mocktail recipes and other important information about being a responsible host this season. They also have an app that includes a game your guests can play to test if they’ve had too much to drink to drive home.

Win a gift basket valued at $200!

As a child growing up in the 90s with middle class parents, never once did I imagine that one day, adults would be dressing their kin in Lanvin. Now that we’re here in the 21st century, it’s unheard of in the celebrity and fashion world if your child is in anything less than Gabbana.

Before infants are able to speak words at all, they are wearing some of the most expensive labels on earth. Diane von Furstenberg, Dolce and Gabbana, Armani and Burberry have all hopped on the kiddy caboose and have conducted themselves in an adorable manor in order to better arm the tiny folk who wear their designs.

Harper Seven Beckham, one of the many offspring of Victoria and David, was wearing some of the priciest brands and was hitting the InStyle top 100 lists, surpassing regular mentions with flying colors. How is that so? Well with a designer for a mother and a footballer for a father, both highly involved in the fashion industry, becoming an extension of her parents’ alter egos is young Harper’s job apparently.

The A-list daughter was seen in Chloé tights and Stella McCartney jumpers long before she could say the words. Some of Ms. Harper Beckham’s ensembles could put a down payment on a house; one might think that dressing a child in expensive brands is sick; you wouldn’t bat an eyelash if you knew who was doing it.

Of course little Mason Disick, Scott Disick and Kourtney Kardashians child, has been seen in Burberry scarves and Gucci loafers. Jennifer Lopez’s children are also sporting Missoni, Prada and Marc Jacobs; if you can foot the bill, place it on your children’s feet. Why do people spend money on designer kids clothing?

Well, it isn’t just celebrities that are forking out handsome dollars in order for their children to wear designers, it’s also housewives and business owners. Edmonton mother Katie Hanson Milroy, co-owner of Dotebaby.ca recently purchased a Burberry sleeper and Missoni jumper for her newborn. Of course both were on sale.

“Fashion is very important to me. We have fun with it but I don’t want her wearing high-end designer labels every day. I think there are other things to focus on.”

It isn’t just about the clothing they’re wearing, it’s about presenting a front as a whole. With Christian Dior Jackets at $2,300, Roberto Cavalli dresses at $675, and Lanvin flats starting at $305, parents like Katie Holmes, Stella McCartney and Hilary Duff are regular clients to the baby fashion departments.

Queasy yet? It’s understandable. Sometimes seeing a mother toting around a Louis Vuitton diaper bag might be cause for some nausea.

But it could be worse – I would rather my child’s first words be Alexander Wang rather then something derogatory!

Erica Champan stumbled upon her love for fashion while scrolling tirelessly through Tumblr. She loves putting on a vibrant outfit and getting stares and awkward glances on the street of her small town.  Fashion isn’t just about putting clothes on and hoping for the best, it’s a lifestyle.  She hopes to work for Vogue and be photographed while strolling the streets of Manhattan.

December should be a really fun month but it’s not. My confession is that I kind of hate Christmas.

OK maybe hate is a strong word but I guess I just dislike the holidays. I dread this time of the year because of all the stress involved and when I even start to think about the fact that I have to basically do all the preparations for Christmas. I get overwhelmed just thinking about it.

I work part time and have three kids… Every year, I’m the one who will be doing the decorating and the shopping and the baking and the wrapping. My husband works 10 or 11 hours a day so he’s too tired to do anything when he gets home and I don’t expect him to help out much with baking and decorating anyway.

Then thinking about the shopping that has to be done. I know I will be stressing out to find gifts for everyone and it’s not like I have a lot of money to spend anyway so I have to get really creative or buy things that are sale. I hate the crowds at the mall too.

And then I start thinking about where we’re going to celebrate Christmas and I get even more stressed. Who is going to host the family supper this year? Do I feel even like celebrating with all the aunts and uncles and cousins?

I am very tempted to forget about spending it and pleasing everyone else and do our own thing alone. Then the guilt comes in – is that really fair to the kids?

Then I start to feel like the Scrooge. Bah hambug.

It’s supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year but I guess I am just really tired and run down and i don’t want to deal with all the Christmas STRESS.

Am I alone? Do you hate Christmas too?

Looking for a frugal yet original and fun craft for you and your children this holiday season?

This craft we discovered on Pinterest on the Always in Wonder blog was just the perfect inspiration – Christmas ornaments you can make with kids to do on a lazy weekend.

These do-it-yourself ornaments are fun and will keep those little hands busy for hours – great for your own Christmas tree but also a great idea for gift giving.

make your own christmas ornaments

The supplies required for this craft are very easy to find. They can all be found in a craft supply store. I purchased my supplies at Michael’s.

You will need:

One or two craft punches. I used a star and a leaf but you can use whatever stamp you wish.

Ribbon to be used for hanging ornaments on tree

Plastic or glass clear ornament balls

Book pages or Phone book pages. I used an old phone book I had in the house.

Step by step instructions:

1. Have your children punch out your paper with the punch theme you chose.

2. Fill the ornament balls with the punched paper.

3. Once you fill up the ornament with you desired amount, close the ornament lid.

Tie ribbon to the ornament and it is now all ready for hanging!

The price was reasonable and my four children had a wonderful time.  This would be a fabulous gift idea for teachers, friends, and neighbours.  I will definitely do this craft again next year with my children.

It’s that time of year again!  There’s a chill in the air and the smell of Pumpkin Spice lattes are sabotaging the diet that I haven’t started yet.

While most people are slowly making their way up to their attics to bring down the dusty boxes of Christmas decorations, my halls have been decked since early November.  Yes, Christmas is my most favorite time of the year.  I skip around the house jamming out to Last Christmas and my husband is in a panic trying to find electrical outlets for all the lights I’ve just bought.

The official kickoff to the holidays in my balmy Florida neighborhood is my Annual Ugly Sweater Party.  I started it four years ago because we don’t live close to family and I love getting together with friends and neighbors.

Why an Ugly Sweater Party?  It’s the best ice breaker ever!  Friends and strangers felt comfortable pointing and laughing at each other (not usually acceptable behavior, but here it’s encouraged).  Hey let’s be honest, it’s just plain funny! Laughing puts everyone in a good mood and a good mood is the key to a great party.

Here are my tips to throw an ugly sweater Christmas party:

1. Invitations

I like to send out formal invitations every year. Hardly anyone does this anymore with e-mail and Facebook.  It’s nice to get something in the mail that’s not a bill.  I do a simple photo card like the kind you get at Christmas. It has a picture of my husband and I in our Ugly sweaters as well as a picture of last year’s winners with the caption, “This could be you”.

2.  The Hunt

Probably the best thing about having this kind of party is the hunt for this year’s EPIC Ugly Sweater. It gets your guests involved and amped up for the festivities. Before you know it you’ll be stopped at the grocery store by someone bragging that they have found this year’s winner.  Where do you find it?  Amazingly there is no shortage of Ugly Sweaters around.  The Salvation Army and Goodwill are good options and so is Grandma’s closet (anything hand knit is usually a big hit).

You can get creative and take a moderately ugly sweater and add tinsel garlands, bells, lights you name it.  As the years go by you’ll find it increasingly difficult to outdo yourself.  If you’re really ambitious you can go online, by far the best selection if you’re willing to pay the price!

3.   Food

I am a notorious perfectionist and like to plan and prepare most of the food myself, though I’m making an effort to loosen the reigns. Do yourself a favor and ask a few friends to bring their best appetizers. Stick to finger foods, it’s a lot easier.

4.   Prizes

Make his and hers sashes Mr. Ugly Sweater 2012 and Mrs. Ugly Sweater 2012. Buy antlers for him and a tiara for her and one small prize for each. Have each guest vote for their favorite girl and guy on scrap paper. Count the ballots and crown the winners.

5.  Chinese takeout boxes

I get them in red they are a really cute way to get rid of the leftovers that won’t fit in your fridge.

6.   Party favors

This is optional. I like to give small ornaments. You can hit Walmart or even the Dollar store. Hang them on a small tree with last names and let your guests find their own.

7.  Take lots of pictures.

It’s so much fun to share them and all those Ugly Sweaters look great together. Don’t forget to take a picture of this year’s winners you’ll need it for next years invitations.

Remember, the harder people laugh at you the better your chances of winning.  Have fun!  May your Christmas be Merry and your sweaters be super ugly!
