Winter has finally arrived in Quebec City and one thing we know how to do when the snow is falling is have fun! I can’t think of a city that does holiday time and winter better.

From whole resorts dedicated to fun in the white stuff, to beautiful lights in Old Quebec there is something for everyone to enjoy. Holiday time in Quebec City is magical and there are so many things to do in Quebec City in December.

There are a host of events during the Christmas season including a Traditional German Christmas market held outdoors.

The German Christmas market

The German Christmas market is a must see! Vendors sell a variety of local products as well as a variety of products made and imported from Germany just for the holidays. Pick up a mug of mulled wine, grilled sausages or simply stroll through the quaint wooden booths and soak up the spirit of the season. At the Marché du Vieux-Port de Québec there is also a Signature Market.

Visit the German Christmas Market to find out this year’s dates.

QuébecAdabra

In late December and into January experience the beauty and old world charm of Old Quebec all decked out for the holidays. They call it QuébecAdabra and it really is magic as the old neighborhood dons lights and decorations as well as play host to an exclusive architectural projection called Fantasmagorie.

In early December, the famous Basilique Notre-Dame de Québec presents a Christmas Concert performed by the Regimental Band of the Voltigeurs de Québec , under the direction of Captain François Dorion.

Festi Lumière

The Québec Aquarium is also getting all decked out for the season with its annual Festi Lumière. With over 400,000 lights, inflatables, as well as all the aquatic animals it`s sure to entertain both young and old alike.  Visit the website for hours and fees.

Grande Allée

Last but not least, kick off the New Year in style at the Grande Allée. With light shows, musicians as well as an urban fireworks display, New Year’s Eve in Old Quebec is sure to light a spark in you for the new year. While there enjoy a ride on the Ferris wheel, check out the local merchants or have a hot cocoa on a heated patio.

Winter is here. Instead of looking outside for adventure, people are looking indoors for some serious cuddle time on the couch. Don’t like to cuddle and prefer a bowl of popcorn and fuzzy socks instead? No worries! I’ve got just the thing for both.

These involve love and romance but are far from chick flick status in my books. So grab that extra warm blanket and your favourite movie buddy and get ready to get cozy with these fantastic films – my five best movies to cuddle with someone:

best cuddle up movies

1.  When Harry Met Sally

Guys pretend to not like this movie and fail. Girls may downplay how much they love it but also do a poor job. This is quite possible THE romance movie of all times. It’s funny, charming, interesting, realistic and (above all else) original.  Just accept it – everyone loves this movie. Pecan pie, anyone?

Five best Movies to Watch and Cuddle with someone

2. Garden State

Cute, hilarious, heartbreaking and refreshingly original; this movie deserves all the hype and love it gets. Perfect balance between drama, comedy and romance and Natalie Portman is beyond amazing. I feel like this is an all around good choice for a cozy night on the couch– even for picky film-goers.

3. 500 Days of Summer

This movie makes its way onto a lot of my movie lists. Why? If you have seen you, you know why. If you haven’t, watch it so that you understand. Joseph Gordon-Levitt at his finest and with a script that is both realistic and a little bit dark (for a romance)…but with a happy ending. Who doesn’t love a dance scene?

Five best Movies to Cuddle with someone

4. Away We Go

Another surprise movie with a new take on the difficulties of starting a family. Be prepared for this movies many mood swings and you will be rewarded with great performances, a great script and an even better soundtrack. I hear the couch calling me now!

Five best Movies to Cuddle To

5. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Another personal, all time favourite. This movie ties my chest in a knot every time I watch it. It’s all worth it for an ending that will melt even the hardest of hearts. Emotional impact is at an all time high but so are Kate Winslet and Jim Carrey’s performances. The script is genius by all movie genre standards and once again, original.

There we have it. Start with one or two of these and then add in your own favourites if your spot on the couch is calling your name. Cuddle up close to steal the warmth of your partner or that delicious bowl of popcorn and enjoy!

What’s your favourite movie to watch while cuddling with someone?

With all of the cooking, baking and entertaining, decorating your dining room table for your holiday guests tends to be the last thing on your mind. Presentation is yet another important part of having guests – it creates just the right ambience for your dinner party.

Designing the perfect dining table settings can seem a bit overwhelming but Lonny magazine has a few tips to work with the materials and space you already have to create a show-stopping dining table.

Here are some tips on how to create beautiful table settings:

1.  Choose your color theme carefully. Sometimes a burst of color arranged on a neutral background is all you need to create a lovely table setting.

2.  Use things you already have – mementos and local materials – to personalize and create your very own, unique and distinct table setting.

3.   Create a unique style statement by combining bold patterns, materials and prints. Combining patterns and materials creates eclectic setting.

4.   Build your table setting around a single standout piece. It’s essential to give show-stopping items room to breathe.

5.  Sometimes the saying is true, less really is more. Try going for a more subdued display, arrange smaller, subtle pieces on a neutral tabletop.

6.  Arrange neutral-tone items on a boldly patterned tray to create a surprising twist. Or, stick to a theme and arrange a collection of similar items together for maximal impact.

7. Grouping can produce a strong design impression so group together in six or more to create an impact.

8.  Trays, baskets and bins supply easy, functional anchors for table scapes and of course, help you stay organized!

The dove is a symbol of hope and peace.

Every holiday season, The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation runs their amazing Doves of Hope campaign.

When you visit the Doves of Hope website, you have the opportunity to honour someone special by dedicating a Dove of Hope, a symbol of unity and strength for cancer patients and their families.

I’ve dedicated my Dove of Hope to not just one person but my relatives who have passed away due to cancer. My grandmother, who is my namesake, died of lung cancer when I was a little girl, even though she had never smoked.  I’ve said goodbye to uncles who suffered brain cancer, leukemia, stomach cancer… cancer has taken too many lives too early.

But on the positive and amazing side of it all, my husband’s grandmother beat breast cancer 20 years ago and is still cancer-free. So I dedicate my Dove of Hope to those who lost the battle but continue to live in our hearts – and to those who have conquered cancer.

I am sure that everyone knows someone who had or has cancer. I encourage you to give hope to them and to cancer patients throughout Princess Margaret Hospital who are currently battling cancer.

The Princess Margaret Cancer Centre is one of the world’s top 5 cancer research centres and the Doves of Hope program gives people the opportunity to honour someone special in a visible, tangible way. Over the past 10 years, 55,000 Doves of Hope have been displayed in the atrium of the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and their online Dove Gallery.

Doves of Hope represent hope – they show patients that they aren’t alone in their fight to conquer cancer.

Dedicate your own Dove this holiday season to bring hope to cancer patients over the holidays. Or give the gift of the Dove as a gift to a loved one.

I’m proud to be working with Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation on this campaign. The opinions expressed herein are my own.

It’s a royal baby!

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are expecting a baby, St James’s Palace announced today.

“The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall and Prince Harry and members of both families are delighted with the news.”

Bur poor Kate, she is in hospital because of severe morning sickness!

“The Duchess was admitted this afternoon to King Edward VII Hospital in central London with hyperemesis gravidarum,” the St James’s Palace statement said.

“As the pregnancy is in its very early stages, Her Royal Highness is expected to stay in hospital for several days and will require a period of rest thereafter.”

The royal baby will be born third in line and in direct succession to the throne. He or she will one day be a force to be reckoned with – future head of the armed forces, supreme governor of the Church of England and head of the Commonwealth, and subsequently head of state of 16 countries.

Lucky baby!

We have been waiting for the royal baby news since Catherine and William were married at Westminster Abbey in April 2011.

Congrats to the Royal Family!

It’s December.  Our first snow is here and looks like it will be staying.  The kids are wearing winter coats, boots, hats and mitts.  It’s that wonderful holiday time in Montreal!  Here are some lovely things to do in Montreal in December.

Telus Fire on Ice fireworks in December?

Yes every Saturday at the Old Port there is a display of fireworks with Telus Fire on Ice. I plan on taking the kids, grab a hot chocolate and watch a beautiful display light up a wintery sky. If you are really coordinated you can skate at the same time.

Sounds really nice right?  Skating to fireworks. When you’re done you can wrap up the evening with something wonderful to eat, or you could start your evening off that way too.

Santa Village

If your in town with little ones why not take a beautiful drive up to Val David and visit Santa at his village?  Santa’s Village will be open on December weekends 8th & 9th, 15th & 16th and then open every day from December 21st to January 6th from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Dress warm for all kinds of outdoor play.  Oh and if you’re child is at the age where they are ready to give up their pacifiers, they can swap it with Santa for a little gift ( which you can give ahead of time.)  Really cute idea.

There is snow-tubing, skating, and of course reindeer! Santa’s little cottage is on a hill, and there are waiting lines but it’s lot of fun.  There is food you can buy on site too.  A really fun thing to do over the holidays.

Ogilvy’s Mechanical Window

One of my favorite things to do over the holidays is head downtown to Ogilvy’s.  They always have the most beautiful detailed holiday window.  We get the kids a hot chocolate, coffee for us, and just watch the window for a while.Since 1947 this window display called The Enchanted Village is a delight to young and old.  There are various mechanical stuffed animals, all made by Steiff. You can visit this little gem in Mid November to January.  If your in Montreal over the holidays you should definitely check it out.

You can find Ogilvy at 1307 Ste-Catherine Street West, at the corner of De la Montagne Street. You’ll find it’s very easy to get to and the closest metro stations are Peel and Guy-Concordia.We try to get there earlier in December as it’s not as cold.   You can then walk around, head into the indoor shopping malls underground do a little shopping, get warm, and grab a bite to eat.   Another perfect day in Montreal.

Everywhere I turn I see big Cs imprinted on every other woman’s purse. A few years ago, I wouldn’t think twice about overspending on Coach and other brand names. Now?

Well, let’s just say the only C that you’ll find imprinted on my purse stands for Cheap with a capital C – and I’m proud of it.

Just because someone is cost-conscious, it doesn’t mean they have to sacrifice style. We just need to be smarter about our spending. In these economic times, it’s cool to be frugal.

Sometimes, I pretend to be like Suze Orman (in my head) and secretly give the can-you-afford-it-smackdown to people. No, I’m not a financial expert BUT as a stay-at-home mom, I’ve learned a lot about stretching the dollar. In fact, after living on one income, I was driven to find creative ways to save and start earning a little money on the side.

Every little dime I saved, I’d put it towards an end goal. The one I’m working on now, I call my ‘Cuba fund’. We can never seem to justify a vacation after all our spending, so I’m working on saving for our next big family trip. These tips on saving money won’t make you rich, but it’s surprising how little things amount to a lot.

Here are 21 ways to save and make money – ways I’ve personally explored, earned and saved!

1. Price compare your flyers.

Why pay more for the same exact item? Yes, I’m one of those annoying people that you dread in the lineup at the grocery store. I circle cheaper items from competitor grocery stores and have the cashier price match those items. I save AT LEAST $20 every time I do this.

2. Participate in focus groups and fill out surveys.

A lot of marketers are willing to pay the public to share their opinion about their products. Also, check the back of receipts to see if you get any free products next time you purchase something. McDonald’s/Burger King generally gives free fries and Old Navy gives a coupon if you fill out surveys online.

3. Host a gold party.

There are quite a few jewelers who will help you set up a party where you and your friends can cash in gold jewelry on the spot. Whether it’s broken, you look like an idiot wearing your retro snake ring or you want to get rid of memories from your old boyfriend – now you can get a little cha-ching for your bling. (And make a commission from your guests).

4. Invest in TFSA, RESP and RSP.

They say that the rich and the poor are alike – they both complain about taxes. The Canadian government has recently introduced many tax-free programs to help you save.

5. Get a no-annual fee credit card that gives back.

Many credit cards give back rewards points or money for every dollar you spend. Accumulate as many points as possible by using your credit card for every purchase and make it worth-y of you!

6. Use less energy.

Run your laundry machines or dishwasher after 9pm on weeknights or on weekends. Your hydro bills will be much less if water is used after hours.

7. Have a garage sale.

If cleaning the house seems like a daunting task every week, do a deeper cleaning by getting rid of clutter you don’t need. Or, if you choose to sell stuff on kijiji or craig’s list, meet the buyer in a public place to protect your privacy.

8. Clean with generic-brand white vinegar.

Not only is it more economical to wash your floors, bathtubs, sinks, mirrors, and stainless steel with white vinegar and water – but it’s better for the environment too!

9. Get creative in the kitchen.

I hate when I’m left with one fricken piece of leftover chicken from last night’s dinner. How do I split that four ways for tomorrow? Easy. Just slice it up into thin pieces and mix it with cooked peppers, mushrooms and onions. Add some sour cream to a tortilla and bam – it’s fajita Friday. And yes, believe it or not, four people can eat ONE filet of chicken if you make enough veggies to add in your fajitas. Or, if you have meatloaf leftover tonight, crumble it up and make a Spaghetti Bolognese or Mexican Lasagna tomorrow.

10. Have at least ONE meatless day.

Not only is it healthy to cut out a little meat from your diet, but you’ll trim a little spending from your wallet too.

11. Grow a garden.

Grow your own vegetable garden this summer. It doesn’t get more organic (and cost effective) than picking your own fresh herbs and veggies from your very own backyard.

12. Blog.

If you have the gift to gab and love to write, advertisers will adore you.  If you don’t have time to set up your own personal blog, other professional bloggers may be willing to pay their guest writers.

13. Shop smart.

Do you really need brand name greeting cards? In other words, make the dollar store and grocery stores with lower-cost labels your friend.

14. Become a mystery shopper.

Many companies/stores need anonymous customer service evaluators and don’t mind that you bring along your kids. Just be cautious if they ask for your SIN number online. Those may NOT be legitimate.

15. Don’t be impulsive.

When on a shopping spree – try it on, put it on hold, walk away and think about it. If you think you don’t have time to go back, trust me, when you love something, you will make time to go back!

tips to save money

16. Recycle those bottles.

Give old wine bottles back at the beer store. Although you don’t get very much money for them, money is better in your pocket than in the recycling box.

17. Look for free activities in your local community.

If you can’t find a free event, plan a picnic at a park. Bring some bocce balls, a Frisbee, badminton sets, or horseshoes and hold your own family tournaments. (Dollar store plastic trophies are always a hit with kids under ten).

18. Pack Snacks.

Bring your own snacks and drinks when going out. It’s inevitable. The minute I leave the house, my kids say I’m hungry or thirsty. Everything costs double the price when we’re out, so I prep my purse with a few juice boxes and snacks just in case.

19. Shop at the end of the season.

When clothes are on the clearance rack, I stock up for the next year.  I buy one or two sizes up so the kids can wear them for a few months longer and grow into them.

20. Clean your closets once a year.

Sometimes I forget what clothes I have since I tend to wear the same stuff all the time. It’s good to refresh your memory with what’s in your wardrobe and pair them with your newer clothes. Ta da… new outfits are born again.

21. Don’t turn your nose up to hand-me-downs.

If friends offer their kids’ used clothes to you – take them! Even if you don’t wear all of them and just keep some in the car for those pesky little accidents or cooler days, everything helps. Kids outgrow their clothes so fast, it’s not worth spending a lot of money on them. The clothes or toys you don’t need, you can donate to the less fortunate or sell them at places like Once Upon a Child.

Hope these tips helped. Happy saving!

It’s my birthday, yo!

Another year older, another year wiser – ‘tis true.

This past year has been an interesting one – lessons being learned and finding strength through challenging times. It has also been an exciting one – fabulous opportunities and meeting wonderful people.

One thing that hasn’t changed is the fact that things change. Just when you think you’re comfortable, something happens and life throws you a curve ball. As cliché as that sounds, it’s true.

Being able to swim with the tides is a gained skill. It doesn’t come easy but with a little practice, you learn to accept what is happening and deal with things as they come.

This past year has shown me, once again, that the the only way to live is to take things day by day. Be present and enjoy the little, amazing moments that we often miss during the hustle and bustle of our daily lives.

Today, I’m counting my blessings and giving thanks.

And of course, a little song…

Early Christmas present for Jessica Simpson? See how shocked she looks in the above photo?

Well that’s the rumor… that she is pregnant again!

Us Weekly is reporting that she and fiancé Eric Johnson are expecting again – just six months after giving birth to daughter Maxwell Drew Johnson.

“It definitely wasn’t planned. But yes, Jessica is pregnant again,” a source told Us.

Oops! Personally I’d be freaking out if that happened to me… it’s just too soon to go through another pregnancy all over again. I know my body needed time to adjust… and lose the weight I put on before putting more on once again.

Soooo what happens to Jessica’s Weight Watchers $4 million gig? The Fashion Star mentor lost the 70 pounds she gained with her first baby… will WW get her another deal after this babe is born?

The 32-year-old gave birth to Maxwell this past May and he was a big baby boy weighing 9 pounds 13 ounces at birth.

If the Us report is true, congrats to Simpson and Johnson!

Do you think that weight gain and disease are simply a function of age and genetics? Do you wonder why, despite eating a whole-grain, low-fat diet and putting in countless hours of exercise, you aren’t getting any healthier or thinner?

FOOD IS MEDICINE.

Every time you eat, you are either feeding a disease or fighting it. This is a principle that people in the Paleo community hold very true.  And The Paleo Miracle: 50 Real Stories of Health Transformation is an inspirational testament to this fact.

So many people have either eliminated all symptoms of disease, or dramatically improved symptoms simply by eating REAL food.  Diseases like diabetes, heart disease, ADHD, Crohn’s, MS and many others.  Ever heard of a diabetic that has become completely medication-free?  Read on….

Astoundingly resonant in this book, are the testimonial accounts of people who prove that when your body is healthy on the inside, you will look healthier on the outside too. As a result, most people who follow the Paleo lifestyle have also lost a lot of body fat.

The people featured in the book are a few of THOUSANDS who have all undergone a miraculous transformation in their health.

My journey towards adopting the paleo lifestyle started 6 years ago in 2006. I was 39 years old, 195 pounds, with over 50% body fat. I was having severe pounding headaches, had some difficulty breathing on exertion, was tired all the time, and experiencing gastric  reflux at night. I chalked it up to more of a psychological etiology – and to having 3 children. I was feeling horrible all the time. I had been depending mostly on frozen entrees, fast food, and meals that could be quickly thrown together to feed myself and my family. A typical breakfast was bagels/breads, muffins, cereal, sugary oatmeal, or frozen waffles. Lunch consisted of sandwiches made with deli meats and cheeses or the old standby of peanut butter and jelly. Snacks were chips, cookies, or goldish crackers, maybe a piece of fruit. We would go days without a vegetable – maybe a salad if it came with the entrée at a restaurant. And dinner would be pasta or a family sized frozen tray of something ready to just put in the oven. Dessert – there was always dessert – typically a cake or ice cream.

Sound familiar? Read more about Lisa and her journey to beat the odds against Congestive Heart Failure.

If there is one thing you can give yourself and your loved ones this holiday season, it is the inspiration to get healthy.  Though viewed as “extreme” or “restrictive” the Paleo Lifestyle is anything but.  Seemingly unconventional, it’s premise lies deeply rooted in our ancestral history and thousands of people… REAL people… have discovered that there is more truth than hype to this “diet”… it is a lifestyle and one that has saved the lives of many of the contributors to the book.

At least half of the profits from this book will go to a charitable organization (that the contributing writers will decide on) to continue promoting health.

What are you waiting for? Get inspired!
