I haven’t written a personal blog post in quite a while… I’m not sure why.

Part of it is due to the fact that I don’t feel comfortable sharing too much information about my kids’ lives as they are getting older. I’m also often on the fence about how much I want to share about myself publicly. There is much I could share but feel it isn’t my place to do so. Also life is just absolutely nuts with the day-to-day that I don’t feel I have any energy left to write a personal essay.

I’m feeling a little underwhelmed about blogging these days and yet there is so much I want to write. I think I just need to make that time to gather my thoughts and allow the words to flow freely.  I’m going to take Karma Brown’s advice and wake up early and use that quiet time for writing.

So I’m going to try to take back this space, my blog, and share more about what I’m thinking, feeling and dreaming about.

No I’m not changing the format of this site although sometimes I get the urge to change things up – but I know my readers love hearing from other women and moms and reading their posts and I wouldn’t want to mess with that.

But I will write more. Whether the post is short, silly or a photograph or poem, I’m just going to share it – without thinking, is this blog-worthy? Should I publish? Will anyone read it? …. So will you read it?!?

I have never been a fan of resolutions because too many negative cogitations are associated with it. Like the fact that about 80% of gym memberships fall by the wayside after just 8 weeks and every year the weight loss industry makes billions of dollars relying on peoples beliefs that “this time it’s going to work!”.

And here we are again. Another year to try again to get it right. But has anyone really told you how to get there? Have you thought about what it is that you really want and what is required to get it?

I have been working with a business coach lately who uses the same creative plan that I do with my clients. What is it I want and what are the steps needed to succeed?

be smart with fitness goals pin

It’s great to have a goal of “eating healthy”, “losing 20lbs” or “exercising 4 days a week”, but unless you use S.M.A.R.T goals, you could be starting off on the wrong foot.

SBe SPECIFIC.

What is it that you want? Just saying ‘I want to lose weight” isn’t enough. How much weight and why?

MMeasureable.

How are you going to measure your Success? If it’s 50 lbs you want to lose, break it down. 1-2 lbs per week is safe FAT loss. Any more than that is usually muscle and water and you need that for an efficient metabolism!

AAttainable.

Can you do what is required? Do you have all the systems in place to lose weight? Have you created an exercise plan to support the weight loss and put it in (not just your calendar) but your family calendar so everyone know and can support you? Have you gone through your cupboards? Maybe you need the help of a certified nutritionist?

RRealistic.

Don’t ask yourself for big changes to soon. If you really want to change your life, just think about it. You can’t change the way you have been living over night so this will be a daily challenge that you will have top be prepared for. You may fall off the wagon so be prepared for that. Have a back up plan and get back on.

TTimely.

How long will it take to reach that goal? Or what time commitment will you need to create on a daily, weekly or monthly basis? Again…having a support system (friend, spouse, family) will make it easier for you to make the changes that are required so you don’t have to feel guilty that you are making time for yourself, for a change.

Remember, 2013 is going to be a great year for everyone! We made it through the universal shift of 2012 so take advantage and make this one the best year yet!

On Friday, I attended a fabulous blogger event hosted by Minling Pan Studio and organized by Valerie Stachurski’s fabulous Charming Media.

Minling Pan Studio is a women’s boutique in Toronto’s Yonge and Eglinton neighbourhood. You’ll find great fashion and accessories, mostly clothing from Hong Kong’s designer label A.Y.K. The studio blends retail with a personal touch – the owner Minling offers personal shopping, wardrobe audits and consulting services and seminars.

I was thrilled to have a colour analysis done during the event. After sitting with Minling, I discovered that I’ve been wearing the wrong colours for my skin tone… I didn’t know I was considered an “Autumn” and should choose warmer tones of clothing such as chocolate brown, rusty reds, corals and golds.

Of course I gravitate towards blues and greens but apparently they do nothing for me!

The award season is among us… the People’s Choice Awards, the Oscars, Golden Globes, Grammys, SAG Awards… one swanky, posh and expensive award show after another.

Who is wearing what? Best dressed list and worst dressed lists will flood headlines the following mornings… people will anticipate whether a wardrobe malfunction or inappropriate moment will be caught on camera, or whether someone’s speech will be either rude or boring. We’ll watch closely to see which couples show up together, which don’t, and whether Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie will be the best looking duo yet again.

Will you watch along with millions of others, and perhaps like me, live tweet throughout the award show? Or will you turn off the television, Facebook, Twitter and read a book instead?

Why is our society today so celebrity obsessed? These actors and musicians make so much money, enough to feed a country and then they have these elaborate award shows to ultimately pat each other on the backs.  And we sit there, year after year, and applaud them. We watch and critique and gossip and comment on the fashion.

Why? Why do we do this? I’m guilty of it and you are too. Music and film are an art form – we must protect and honour arts and culture. Right? Yes – but then they wouldn’t have to broadcast those award shows if it were only about the craft.

It’s about the celebrity.  We are a celebrity conscious culture – some are completely obsessed.  Following the lives of celebrities is a form of entertainment. We love to know what celebrities are doing, wearing, product they’re using, people they’re dating – and we try to find something in them that we relate to.

Having information at our finger tips at every waking moment makes it easier to always be in-the-know about our favourite personalities and their private lives, verging on the brink of stalking.

This interesting article on LiveScience.com talks about the psychology behind our celebrity fixation – it’s worth a read. Daniel Kruger, an evolutionary psychologist at the University of Michigan, says:

“…Learning what high-status individuals do so you might more effectively become one… knowing what is going on with high-status individuals, you’d be better able to navigate the social scene.”

So excuse me while I make a bowl of popcorn and settle down in front of my television to watch Entertainment Tonight – I may learn a new social skill. Or just be reminded that I’m not rich.

Yes, it is cold, snowy, icy at times and it takes a while to warm the car up but living in Ottawa definitely has its perks in the Winter.  Growing up only an hour away from the city I have been able to enjoy many of Ottawa’s amenities over the years. The hidden gems we discover as a family that continue to pop up each year excite me!

Here are my top 3 family friendly activities this Winter:

1. Skiing

Whether you want to cross country or downhill – or both – Ottawa has it all within a 30 minute drive or less.  Enjoy the wonderful Gatineau Park trails while cross-country skiing. Let the little ones ski along, wear babes in a carrier or bring a sled/chariot.  Note: you must pay a small fee to use these trails but they are beautiful and totally worth it!

This year we are all about the downhill skiing. Within 30 minutes of downtown Ottawa enjoy Ski Vorlage, Ski Eldelweiss, Camp Fortune or Mont Cascade.  The two-year-old is absolutely loving it and I am hoping to turn myself into a solid and confident beginner from the more apprehensive beginner I am currently.

2. Wave Pools

The City of Ottawa has two indoor wave pools (Kanata and Splah in Gloucester) that will tire your children out and allow the whole family to have fun!  There are specific times for the designated wave swims and both pools have leisure swim times that operate without waves should that be of interest to you.  Pretend you are on a tropical vacation! Only downfall is there is no swim up bar.

3. Skating

The City of Ottawa Rink of Dreams was funded by the Sens Foundation, Hockey Canada, City of Ottawa and other local partners.  It is a great ice surface, completely lit up at night that invites the whole family to have fun.  This outdoor rink is in operation daily from 6a.m. (who would be up skating at that time?!) until 11p.m.  Promise me that if you make the trip downtown for a skate that you treat yourself to a Beaver Tail .  They are soooo good!

Of course there are many other great places and things to enjoy on a chilly January day in Ottawa! Take a trip to the Science Museum, Tubes and Jujubes, or Starr Gymnastics for some fun and let the kids run off steam!

Whatever you decide to do grab a latte from Bridghead first and enjoy the time with your family!

Please give a warm welcome to our newest blogger, Franki Arnold!

by Franki Arnold

My name is Franki Arnold, and I am a 26-year-old blogger and owner/operator of my blog Those Young Moms, and the mother of a bright and very busy four-and-a-half year old. I’m married to my wonderful husband David, and we are currently expecting our second child in July.

I am so excited to be able to share this journey with all of you on amotherworld!

David and I planned, discussed and hashed out the pros and cons of having a second child for over two years, and we are so happy to finally be expanding our family.

My first pregnancy, which resulted in our beautiful daughter Tatum being born in 2008, was a surprise. While we had not planned on getting pregnant, we welcomed the change into our lives and were thrilled to be expecting our first baby. With this being my first pregnancy and not having much experience with pregnancy and babies, I dove head first into a completely unfamiliar world of bodily changes, prenatal and breastfeeding classes, taking in advice from many different people (often strangers, as most of us mothers have experienced!), and birth. I was immediately overwhelmed at the amount of information and advice.

My pregnancy went very smoothly. I had no complications, and by the time my due date of June 15 came and went, I was very ready to meet my baby. In the early hours of June 19, I started feeling what I thought might be contractions, but I wasn’t sure since they were not consistent and not unbearable. I tried to rest, but seeing as this was our first and I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect, I didn’t do much resting!

An hour later I started feeling more pain and the contractions were closer together. I woke David up and told him I thought it was time to go to the hospital, we grabbed the hospital bag, and we were off to have a baby!

vbac, a pregnancy story, vbac story
Getting to know our daughter after her birth!

To make a long story short, my labour fizzled out about ten hours after I began, and I was given a c-section as my labour was deemed a “failure to progress.” At the time, I hadn’t done a lot of research regarding how a woman’s body goes through labour and how it can be very intermittent.

I had done the basics (I read What To Expect, isn’t that pregnancy & birth 101?!) and trusted the doctors would deal with my labour appropriately. My c-section was not traumatic, and both Tatum and I faired very well, but I was left with an awful feeling of my body having failed me, and that there was maybe something more I could have done to avoid the surgery.

Four-and-a-half years later, and expecting baby #2, I am planning a VBAC (vaginal birth after caesarean). About a month after having Tatum, I started researching different information regarding c-sections and VBACS and was thrown into a whole other realm of pregnancy, labor and birth that I was not aware of while pregnant with Tatum. I so wished I had had this information before! After over four years of excessive reading and research, I have become a very passionate advocate for VBAC births and I am very confident about having one with this baby.

Looking back, there are several factors that I feel interfered with my body’s natural progression of labour and resulting in my c-section. I know so much more about how a woman’s body is meant to work during labour and delivery, and my wish with this pregnancy, labour and delivery is that I can experience the birth that I have envisioned and that I know my body knows how to do.

There is always a place for c-sections when medically necessary, but they are so widely performed now and can be avoided as long as we have the right knowledge. I hope that with this knowledge I can achieve the birth I have longed for.

I can’t wait to share my pregnancy journey, and hope to connect with other mothers during this time!

The 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards show was everything we hoped it would be – entertaining, funny, shocking and punctual! The show ran smoothly with Amy Poehler and Tina Fey were golden as co-hosts. You just know they will be co-hosting again next year.

Some of their best lines:

“It’s the only night when the beautiful people of film rub shoulders with the rat-faced people of television.”

“I haven’t really been following the controversy over Zero Dark Thirty but when it comes to torture, I trust the lady who spent three years married to James Cameron.”

“You know what Taylor Swift? You stay away from Michael J. Fox’s son.”

“That was Hilary Clinton’s husband.” – after Bill Clinton’s appearance.

“Please welcome middle-aged George Clooney.”

“Anne Hathaway, you gave a stunning performance in Les Mis.I have not seen someone so alone and abandoned like that. Since you were on stage with James Franco at the Oscars.”
Here is a video of their opening monologue (or dialogue in this case):

Fellow Saturday Night Live alumni Kristen Wiig and Will Ferrell also presented — together as well and they too were brilliantly funny.

Another highlight of the evening was Jodie Foster’s speech where she surprisingly talked about her personal life (she has always been so private) and “came out” publicly by thanking her partner of 14 years, Cyndney Bernanrd,  “who sticks with me through all the rotten and the bliss”.

Did you make New Year’s resolutions? I don’t blame you… but January is a fresh new beginning and a chance to change your mind-frame and set some goals for the rest of the year.

We all know that exercise and maintaining a healthy diet are important as well as getting more sleep. But here are some other ideas for your “new year list”:

new years resolutions, things to do more of this year

1. Laugh More

Don’t be a sour puss – laugh and smile more often. Laughter is actually good for you! Do whatever it takes to put a smile on your face…  and I do mean even a happy ending. Which brings me to the next tip….

2. Have More Sex

In addition to the wonderful physical feelings of doing the deed, sex is also good for your health – it helps lower stress and blood pressure, boosts immunity, promotes better sleep… I could just go on and on and on!

3. Make More Lists

Mini-goals for the day or week can make you feel accomplished and give you the confidence to move forward with other, bigger plans. I prefer a pen and paper when it comes to making lists – the sensation of crossing those items off the list is very satisfying.

4. Focus Your Efforts More

You can’t do it all – it’s humanly impossible, otherwise we’d all be superheroes. We tend to take on too much, do too much and have a hard time just saying “no”. Take the time to really think about what you really want to achieve and cross off things that won’t ultimately help you achieve your goals.

5. Focus on You More

Make this the year that you finish your book, learn a new language or take that dream vacation. No more excuses – just do it! But at the same time…

6. Slow Down More

While making your goals, it’s also important to slow down and enjoy the little moments in your life. Take the time to slow down and enjoy moments. Focus on the important things

7. Save More Money

Put money aside for the future. Rule of thumb:  10% of your income should be saved toward retirement.

8. Meditate Often

Meditation is so good for the mind, body and soul. Even just 10 minutes of day of quiet can do wonders by relieving stress and helping to restore your inner peace and calm.

9. End Relationships that Don’t Work

You know those friendships that drain your energy? They are toxic. Don’t try to keep a friendship alive if it becomes too stressful – after all, it’s supposed to be effortless.

10. Socialize More

I’m not talking about Tweeting with friends or chatting on Facebook. I’m talking face to face socializing – make the effort to get together with friends or have a date night with your partner once a month.  Spend real life time with people who bring you joy and laughter.  Let loose and have some fun!

What’s on your list for this year?
