Autumn is my favourite time of the year – leaves changing colours, warm afternoons, apple pie and of course, the yummy harvest. Fall fashion shopping and taking long drives in the country are just a few of the many activities I love about this time of year, not to mention Halloween and Thanksgiving.

But it’s also a time when I’m spending more money it seems! So if I can maximize my spending by collecting AIR MILES reward miles with my American Express AIR MILES Credit Card, then I definitely will.

American Express AIR MILES Cards are the fastest way to earn reward miles because you can earn TWICE when shopping at participating AIR MILES Sponsors across Canada; first with your Amex Card and second, your AIR MILES Collector Card.

I don’t need to spend extra, I just have to use both cards when I shop; and there are so many retailers that I already shop at which accept AIR MILES and Amex. Those reward miles will just collect without even trying!

I have the no annual fee American Express AIR MILES Credit Card; with my card alone, I have, purchase protection, 24/7 customer service and access to some of the hottest concerts, shows and events before the public with Front Of The Line. I earn 1 reward mile for every $15 in Card purchases at AIR MILES Sponsors.

There are two other Amex AIR MILES Cards to choose from, the American Express AIR MILES Platinum Credit Card ($65 annual fee waived for the first year) and the American Express AIR MILES Reserve Credit Card ($299 a year) bringing premium travel experiences and extra perks for Cardmembers. With the Reserve Card, you can book additional airlines and destinations not within the AIR MILES Flight program,  use your reward miles to cover taxes and fees, receive a complimentary companion ticket, have access to an AIR MILES concierge service, receive four passes to airport lounges worldwide every year, and more.

Here are five ways you can maximize your rewards this Thanksgiving with an American Express AIR MILES Credit Card:

1.       Travel

If you’re travelling to see family for Thanksgiving, you can collect extra reward miles by using your Amex AIR MILES Credit Card for gas and hotels.  From maintaining your vehicle at Goodyear to filling up at Shell to renting a car with Budget to booking accommodations at a variety of choice hotels such as Hilton Hotels and InterContinental Hotels Group, those bonus reward miles can add up quickly. I know come February, I’ll be itching to travel somewhere tropical!

2.       Groceries

Do your Thanksgiving feast shopping at Metro stores (Safeway out west, Sobeys in Atlantic Canada). The grocery list can be quite long when entertaining guests – turkey, stuffing, potatoes, carrots, pies…  I’m getting hungry already! Metro, for example, has coupons every week on certain products; stock up on those items and collect bonus reward miles.

If you’re hosting Thanksgiving this year, you can also use your Amex AIR MILES Card to stock up on wine and spirits at the LCBO (also offered in various liquor stores in Alberta and the east coast). You know you can never have enough liquor in the house!

3.       Organization

Hosting family for Thanksgiving takes some real preparation and organization! With the hectic scheduling in my household, I need all the help I can get – from storage bins to calendars, anything that can help keep the mess and our lives in somewhat of an order is welcomed.  Use your American Express Card at popular retailers like Rona and Staples to name a few and earn AIR MILES reward miles just for making purchases you would normally would anyway.

4.       Clothing

I usually buy the kids a new outfit or shirt to wear on Thanksgiving Day; Old Navy is always on our list for shopping for clothing for the entire family. There are so many retailers where you can also collect reward miles such as the Children’s Place and Babys’R’Us to name a few. Use both your collector card and your Amex for double the points.

5.       Fall Décor

A stop at Michaels for fall and Halloween crafts is a must this time of year. Even if I’m not a very crafty person, I’d like to think that I am (sometimes). What craft is on my never-ending to-do list this fall? I’d like to attempt making my own autumn wreath for the front door (wish me luck). At Michaels, you can collect 1 AIR MILES reward mile for every $25 you spend and 1 reward miles for every $20 you spend with the American Express AIR MILES Credit Card .

Here is a full list of merchants where you can earn AIR MILES faster.

Bonus Tips

I shop at Hudson’s Bay but often don’t use the points. You can convert your HBC Rewards points to reward miles at a rate of 2,000 points for 1 AIR MILES reward mile.

If you don’t have an American Express AIR MILES Credit Card, join and earn a welcome bonus of 150 reward miles the first time you use it.

Just in time for Thanksgiving, you could earn 100 Bonus AIR MILES reward miles when you enroll your Amex AIR MILES Card and charge at least 3 separate purchases to your Card from now until October 10th, 2013.

Happy shopping and Happy Thanksgiving!

The kitchen is the heart of the home, the main hub for families to eat, entertain and talk. Our home is open concept so our kitchen, family room and eating area all flow from one space to the next. Which means everyone is hanging out here – all the time. It’s nice sometimes because we can all be together while dinner is being made, but sometimes it can be a little claustrophobic!

It’s our first home and although we have already created so many special memories here, I hope it’s not our last. I love my home but I feel that we have outgrown it as a family.

My current kitchen just doesn’t offer enough counter space or storage. I’ve been dreaming about what my dream kitchen would look like and inspired to create a Pinterest board on the various styles I’d love. Although I’m a sucker for crisp clean white, I know realistically my kitchen would look a tinted beige not long after. How does one keep up with white cabinets?! French Country and Tuscan style are probably more along the lines of my dream kitchen.

If we were to every stay in this house, I would definitely renovate the kitchen!

Finish®, in partnership with Bosch®, is going to be giving away 10 Ultimate Kitchen makeovers valued at $10,000 as part of their Buy One Get One with mail-in-rebate in-store promotion! All of the details are on their Facebook page.

Of course my mind is racing…  I’d refinish the cabinets, change the flooring, add granite counter-tops and ideally, add an island and a pantry. A double oven is a must (to go along with our amazing refrigerator)….

With the new school year in full swing, homework is once again a hot topic for parents, teachers and students alike.

As a parent, it’s sometimes difficult to help your child with their homework without doing it for them.  Here are some tips to help you provide your child with the tools they need in order to successfully complete their own homework.

1. Workspace

According to Virginia Woolf (A Room of One’s Own, 1929) having a space of your own to work, think and write is absolutely necessary.  Give your child a quiet space in your home where they can do their homework every day.  This workspace should be:

  • Tidy and organized – An organized workspace allows for an organized and clear thought process
  • Quiet – Siblings running around, adults talking, music and background noise could make it difficult for your child to concentrate
  • Free of electronic distractions – The space your child works in should be free of electronic devices like cell phones, smart phones and TV
  • Roomy – most homework tasks require books to be open and notes to be sprawled out – give your child the room they need to move from one book to another easily
  • Wired to the Internet – if you’ve got an older child then they will probably need internet access in order to complete their homework. It’s a good idea to have parental controls in place on your home computer and to ensure your child is using the Internet for homework and not for fun!

2. Routine

Life with kids is busy. School, extra-curricular activities, dinner, relaxation and consistent bedtime routines are all an important part of your child’s weeknight. Make sure that you work homework into this daily routine:

  • Encourage your child to do their homework at the same time every day – you’ll meet less resistance if they spend a half an hour on it every day, at the same time of day
  • Having your child do homework while you’re busy with something like preparing dinner is a good way to keep them occupied while you’re busy too
  • If your child is young, or has a special need then you may need to sit down with them and work through the homework with them. Make this part of their pre-bedtime routine, as quiet work like homework is a good way to help them wind down before bed

homework tips

3. Communication

It’s important to communicate with your child about what homework they have, and to follow up with them about how they did with the homework. Don’t expect perfection here, instead, just keep the lines of communication open with them so you are aware of what they are doing, and when they do well or are struggling with a topic.

Don’t forget to communicate with your child’s teacher if they are feeling unsuccessful or unmotivated about their homework. You should also talk to your child’s teacher if you feel they are not getting enough homework, or (in most cases) if they are getting too much homework and it’s becoming unmanageable.

4. Motivation

Motivation is a huge issue when it comes to successful learning, homework included. Here are some tips from Being Smart about Gifted Children: A Guidebook for Parents and Educators by Dona J. Matthews and Joanne F. Foster (pp 193-206) about factors that are necessary for your child to remain motivated:

  • Curiosity, suspense, intrigue and wonder – capture your child’s interest in the subject being taught
  • Confidence – your child needs to feel confident in their ability and also feel that you have confidence in them to complete their homework independently
  • Controversy and contradiction – encouraging students to consider alternative perspectives, controversy and contradiction is often motivating and stimulating
  • Independence, self-regulation and autonomy – allow your child to make their own choices and decisions which will help them stay engaged and feel in control of the task at hand

Know your child’s motivators – what motivates one child will not necessarily motivate another child. Be careful of using extrinsic motivators (like money, candy, toys), which don’t reinforce a love of learning for the sake of learning. Instead try to stick to intrinsic motivators (sense of accomplishment, feeling proud for completing a task).

5. Positive reinforcement

Praise, when earned, increases confidence, involvement in learning, and risk-taking. Criticism can be demoralizing, alienating and reduces motivation to learn. Don’t be afraid to praise your child when they have earned the praise.

Halloween is just around the corner! What will your little ghosts and goblins dress up as this year?

This autumn, H&M has created a special collection of dress-up pieces and Halloween costumes for kids, with 25% of all sales going directly to All for Children. H&M supports this UNICEF project which helps improve some of the most disadvantaged children’s access to quality education, healthcare and social protection services in communities where they operate. The money raised by this collection will go specifically to UNICEF’s work in Bangladesh.

This year’s All For Children collection is inspired by 18th century masquerade balls with costumes such as mermaids, sailors, Marie Antoinette, and pirates.

Girls can dress up as ghosts, pirates or mermaids. Costumes are adorned with bows, webbing, gold embroidery and cool tattoo prints which bring the fantasy of the masquerade alive; flounces on a ghost dress for girls, or the bows on a girl’s pirate top or dress. The accessories have added touches, like the seashells and starfish on a mermaid crown, or a bag shaped like Marie Antoinette’s pug.

For boys, there is a sea captain’s coat complete with frog closures, or a tattoo top and pants if he prefers to be a pirate. There’s a batwing cape, a skeleton-printed jumpsuit, as well as black and white stripes in a horizontal-striped top and vertical-striped jacket and pants. Boys’ accessories include a bat eye mask, pirate boots and a captain’s hat complete with parrot.

All for Children started in 2009 with a five-year project in southern India, supported by a USD$4.5 million donation from H&M. H&M’s support to All for children has so far helped 758,000 children in Southern India.

The All for Children collection H&M is supporting the All for Children project in Bangladesh which is a partnership with UNICEF. The project will improve access to quality education, basic life skills and social protection services for 40,000 boys and girls living in slums around Dhaka.

Life is really all about the little moments, a series of simple yet pleasurable experiences that make your day enjoyable. The smell of coffee first thing in the morning, children’s laughter,  a sunny day – these are the things that truly matter. I’m grateful to have the kids up and ready for school every day. Getting my lazy butt to the gym is a feat in itself.

Not every little duty deserves a medal but when I’m juggling work, home and kids and I’ve managed to make it through the day in one piece, I think that’s just cause for a reward. I’m not saying that food treats should be rewards all the time but I do love my food and that’s often the way I like to indulge!

Often it’s a salty treat that will fulfill the craving but for the most part, it’s something sweet like chocolate, brownies or cheesecake – rich, creamy textures that feel as good as they taste. When I want to satisfy that craving without the guilt, the new YOPA Greek yogurt flavours will do just that.

The stirred Greek yogurt comes in 5 yummy flavors – Mmmm! Mango Tango, Lotta Pina Colada, Va-Va Vanilla Bean, Ooh-la-la Strawberry Cheesecake and Very Berry Lush. With two times the protein of regular yogurt, Greek yogurt is such an easy and delicious way to add dairy and protein to your daily diet. Look how thick the yogurt is!

The Strawberry Cheesecake probably tastes more like strawberries than cheesecake but I’m looking forward to trying the Mmmm! Mango Tango and the Lotta! Pina Colada.

I’m Greek and I probably overuse the word “OPA” – it’s fun to say, isn’t it?  I think it’s a pretty clever play of words that Yoplait is using with their new product.

Linens: Hen House

by Darlene Morrisson

Ariel (voiced by Jodi Benson) is a sweet, little mermaid, who lives under the sea with her father and mermaid family.  She is fascinated by humans and even collects artifacts that she has found from humans along the way.  Of course, this is a secret because her father and the other mermaids would not understand.

Ariel spots a human and is captivated by his appearance, so much in fact, that she wants to meet and interact with him.  However, this is against her father’s rules.

Ariel makes a deal with the Sea Witch that in return for her lovely singing voice, she will become human. Ariel has three days to make the human fall in love with her and receive a loving kiss by sunset on the third evening. If Ariel does not get this kiss, she will lose her voice forever.

The  Diamond Edition Blu-Ray combo pack is great.  The colours are very vibrant and the sound effects and sound quality made it very engaging to keep the attention of the audience.  The extra features on the DVD are very fun- including interactive karaoke sing-a-long for the kids to sing and dance and what is nice is that the clips from the movie are included with the karaoke words, leaving it more entertaining for your children, as well as interesting interviews from the Disney animators.  And, much more.

It was definitely a great movie with great sound quality, interactive and engaging and recommended for all to see.

If you have children and have not yet visited a Pottery Barn Kids store, you’re missing out.

I recently visited the Pottery Barn Kids store on Bloor Street West and didn’t know where to look first for decor ideas for kids rooms. A feast for the eyes really. I could take anything from that store and put it into my home.

Decor ideas for kids rooms were aplenty and the trends for soft greys and pinks were abundant. Chevron patterns – does that come in adult size?

Here are some of my favourite finds from my visit.

How many of you love cleaning?

Let me rephrase – how many of you hate cleaning? Most of your hands are up, I know!

My problem is this – I feel like I’m never caught up on housework. Just when I spend four hours cleaning the house, it’s already a disaster the day after. Why bother cleaning at all?

But I can’t live in a dirty home, it would gross me out and my mother would kill me.

While I’m cleaning the entire house, I can’t help but think of all the things I’d rather be doing with that valuable time. Or I’m asking myself, “Why I haven’t hired someone to help clean even just twice a month?!”

But then I can’t justify the expense: why spend $100 to have someone clean when I can use that money to buy myself a new pair of shoes or item of clothing?

So I continue to clean, begrudgingly. But I have found a few tips that have helped me to keep my house on the somewhat clean and tidy side.

Clean As You Go

Take care of messes along the way. See a spill? Clean it up properly, ie. the orange juice that spilled on the floor and you just wiped with a paper towel? It’s still going to be sticky and then you’re going to walk on it and it’ll just get worse. Some food splashed in the oven? Once it’s cooled off a little bit, wipe it down – it’ll make it easier when you’re doing a major clean of your oven.

Dust Every Day

Keep a duster in plain view on both floors (if you have a two-storey; one for the bedrooms and one for the living/family room) and do a quick dust every other day.

Vacuum the Kitchen Every Day

It’s the busiest hub of the home. I keep my vacuum parked in the kitchen at all times because I tend to use it so much. Kids are messy little creatures; just one snack and crumbs are all over the floor. Before crumbs become a part of the floor, just bust out the vacuum and do a quick clean.

Keep Cleaning Products Handy

Who wants to see a spray cleaner on the bathroom counter? They’re always kept hidden in the cupboard. But the Windex® Multi-Surface Disinfectant Touch-Up Cleaner seems to blend in with its small, sleek bottle design. Keep one in every bathroom – if it’s there for you to see, you’ll use it. Wipe down the bathroom sink and toilet seats every day and you’ll notice you’ll be spending less time doing your usual weekly (or bi-weekly, shhh don’t tell my mother) deep clean.

Keep a cloth and Windex® Multi-Surface Disinfectant Touch-Up Cleaner in the kitchen for counter clean-ups. I can’t tell you how many times I wipe down the countertops throughout the day, and then I worry about germs and bacteria from food. But with the touch-up cleaner, I know I’m cleaning and sanitizing as it kills 99.9% of household ,bacteria,  like Staph and Strep.

From crumbs on the kitchen counter to the kids’ toothpaste stuck on the bathroom mirror, small messes pop up throughout the day whether we like it or not. If I can manage to quickly clean up messes as I go, the big clean won’t be so big. Which means more Me Time!

The new Windex® Multi-Surface Disinfectant Touch-Up Cleaner is safe on kitchen sinks, stainless steel, chrome, ceramic tiles, finished wood, glass, plastic and more. What I also enjoy is the pump – it reminds me of when I loved pretending to play cashier as a kid, I love the sound of the pump!

The all new Windex® Multi-Surface Disinfectant Touch-Up Cleaner is a fast, convenient, at-hand solution to clean both the kitchen and bathroom without slowing down your daily routine. The only product of its kind, Windex® Multi-Surface Disinfectant Touch-Up Cleaner comes in a small, attractive bottle that conveniently stays out where you need it, so you can clean and sanitize frequent messes without missing a beat. When used as directed Windex® Multi-Surface Disinfectant Touch-Up Cleaner will kill 99.9% of common household bacteria1.

1 When used as directed, kills 99.9% of household bacteria in 10 seconds: Klebsiella pneumonia, Staphylococcus aureus (Staph), Streptococcus pyogenes (Strep), Listeria monocytogenes.
