Over the course of the past week, I’ve read several blog posts and articles surrounding how women can’t have it all. The influx of opinion pieces stemmed from Pepsi CEO’s interview where she said that women can’t have it all.

“I don’t think women can have it all. I just don’t think so. We pretend we have it all. We pretend we can have it all.”

~ PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi

I think this statement rings true for many women, including myself. While men could argue the same thing about “having it all” in life, here I’m focusing on just women and mothers. After all, women’s roles have changed dramatically over the past century and women are still fighting for equality in parts of the world…. which is why this yet again, a hot topic.

Can women have it all? Can women have it all just not at the same time? Or maybe we’re just fooling ourselves and women can’t have it all?

First of all, I think we need to stop saying that women can or can’t have it all. It’s just not a question that everyone will answer the same way.

It’s not easy to “have it all”. But it IS possible to have a balance of everything you desire in life, if your circumstances allow, taking into consideration various factors such as finances, family support system, where you live, etc.

With anything in life, when you’re focused on one thing, something else will take a backseat. Something will inevitably suffer in the process. Sacrifices will have to be made.

It’s a challenge to give 100% effort and attention to every single responsibility and task every single day. Day in, day out… 100%. If you’re able to do it successfully, kudos to you! But you can’t tell me that there are days and times that your effort wavers… after all, we are human.

There will be some stress involved in trying to make that balance happen, and not all days will be as successful and productive. Finding a balance can vary day to day, with family tipping the scale one day and work tipping over the next day.

I feel it’s a huge challenge to excel at parenting and motherhood and excel in a career… a “regular” career. But when you’re a CEO of a major corporation? I’m positive that Indra Nooyi and her kids have paid a price for her success. While they can celebrate her accomplishments and there is much to admire and benefit from her achievements, there is a down side, which Ms. Nooyi has admitted.

Women Can't Have it All
Indra K. Nooyi Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, PepsiCo

How can one be completely present as a parent when you are running a huge corporation? When you do try to have it all, something will suffer.

With Indra Nooyi, it’s clear that her family is a huge support system as well as people working for her to keep everything in order. We should celebrate the fact that she’s a successful woman.

Yet will her children agree? Will they wish she spent more time at home? Very likely. I can imagine how many important events Nooyi – and many other moms – have missed due to work obligations. It sucks. Yes it’s nice that grandma saw your child’s first steps but that should’ve been you, dammit.

A mother’s guilt is probably one of the most difficult and heart-wrenching emotions to face. I struggle daily with the desire to be a successful career woman, and the innate pull of being a nurturer and care giver. A women’s natural instinct to care for her children clashes with her desire to have the career, making the gender roles blurry. While some argue that women and men are born gender equal, a mother’s impulse to love and protect her child is hard-wired into her brain.

Whether Nooyi’s interview was well-crafted and for good publicity, it is refreshing to know that even successful women can admit that it’s difficult for women to have it all… at the same time anyway. But we need to be asking real working women what they think – not a celebrity or a CEO. Ask a regular mom who works and takes care of her family, who doesn’t have a huge support system in place and who doesn’t have the money to pay for help. How much more of a challenge is it when you don’t have a village raising your children and a huge nest egg!

What is “having it all” anyway?

For one woman success is measured by her family and children while for another woman, it means having a career. We need to celebrate women’s choices and embrace a variety of definitions of success.

There is no right way.

“We’ve shown that there is no one way to do it. You can be a mother and still rise to the top of your industry, and you can take time out to focus on family and still migrate back into rewarding, paid work,” says Lisen Stromberg of the NY Times in her article, “The Not-So-New Mother, Finding Balance.

Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook and crusader of women’s empowerment at the workplace thanks to her bestselling book on gender equality, Lean In.

“For those who even have a choice, choosing to leave a child in someone else’s care and return to work is a hard decision. Anyone who has made this decision—myself included—knows how heartwrenching this can be. Only a compelling, challenging and rewarding job will begin to make that choice a fair contest.”

For some women, being productive in the office makes her a better mother at home. For others, they can’t be pulled away from their children and are miserable at work. Whatever fulfills you – whether it’s a goal achieved at work, or a goal achieved being home with the kids – is what women should follow.

Listen to your instincts and do what feels right for you.

Choosing the right child care provider to take care of your children while you are away can be incredibly difficult. After all, it seems as though every time you turn around, you hear another horrifying story on the news, like the story of the nightmare nanny who refused to leave.

Most people are good and trust-worthy, though. You just have to find them. These eight tips will show you how

Here are 8 tips for choosing a trustworthy child care provider:

1. Assess Your Needs

Start by assessing your needs. Do you need a full-time nanny to watch your little ones while you work during the day, or do you just want a sitter on call for an occasional date night? Do you need someone who can watch your children at their house or someone who can come to yours?

2. Ask Around

Once you know what you are looking for, you are ready to begin your search. Start by asking friends and family members if they personally have someone they know and recommend. You might also try calling a local college with an early childhood program or a local church and asking for recommendations. Care.com is another good option, but avoid sites like Craigslist.

3. Do a Background Check

While it may seem strange to look into someone’s personal life, the more information you can dig up about them, the better. Do a formal background check, and research them on social media and the Internet. Talk to a few of their friends and family members to find out what they are really like, and listen for any hesitation. If your babysitter also takes care of other children, talk to some of the other moms for the inside scoop.

8 Tips for Choosing a Trustworthy Child Care Provider

4. Ask Questions

Grill your child care provider like a burger (in a polite way, of course!). This will help you make the best decision. Ask about her discipline strategy, her nanny philosophy, her knowledge of safety hazards and her availability. If you are interviewing a center, ask about turn-over rates, child-teacher ratios and procedures.

5. Observe Your Child Care Provider In Action

Your ideal child care provider absolutely must be a good match for both your children and you. You’ll probably get a good feel for her yourself during the interview, but be sure to watch her with your children as well. You want someone who is warm, energetic and genuinely excited to play with your kids.

6. Be Clear with Your Expectations

Most child care providers aim to please, but they can’t do so unless you tell them what you want. If you want your childcare provider to clean the house, cook, have the kids in bed by a certain time or limit snacks, you have to speak up and say so. Make sure she agrees to anything you are particular about.

7. Drop By Unannounced

A great way to get a feel for your new sitter is to drop by unannounced. Check to see if the children look well taken care of, if the place is relatively tidy and if there are any safety hazards on the floor. If you are considering hiring a nanny that will come to your house, you can always try a few hour test run.

8. Don’t Be Afraid to Say No

At the end of the day, you have to choose a child care provider that you and your children are comfortable with, so do not feel bad saying no, no matter how long you have interviewed her or how many questions you have asked. When it comes to the safety of your children, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

Did you have a difficult time leaving your children with a babysitter or nanny? What was the hardest part for you?

Maybe a Nanny Share is an option for your family? The Nanny Share Contract.

The last time my family and I visited Viamede Resort, it was during a typical Canadian winter – it was freaking cold! But this month we revisited this family cottage resort which is nestled amid 165 acres of woods on the north shore of Stoney Lake near Peterborough. We lodged in a renovated cottage right by the lake in cottage country.

Whether you’re looking for a romantic weekend away or a family retreat in cottage country, Viamede is just a two-hour drive from the hustle and bustle of Toronto. There are also conference facilities for businesses and the resort is popular as wedding venue.

Viamede offers deluxe rooms and cottages with 1 to 3 bedrooms, which are suitable for larger families. The cottages have been renovated – we stayed in a renovated two-bedroom cottage with a family room and full kitchen with a huge porch overlooking Stoney Lake.

There are several activities to keep you busy, if you can’t seem to sit still – what you’re supposed to do in cottage country! You can hike Viamede’s 6 km of private nature trails, go out to the field for a game of soccer or take a canoe out on the lake and enjoy other activities at the Marina. You can also enjoy spa treatments at the full service spa or enjoy the pool with a lakeside view. The lobby offers books and movies to take back to your room or cottage too.

Our cottage was situated right beside The Inn at Mount Julian, Viamede’s fine dining restaurant which dates back to 1865 to 1875. The menu is all complemented by the Viamede farm – free range ducks, pigs, turkeys and a vegetable garden. For those seeking a romantic adult-only option, no kids are allowed here. Unfortunately we weren’t able to try it out as we had our kids with us on this trip.

This visit, we brought my parent’s dog so pet lovers will be happy to know that the resort is pet friendly too! With this added bonus, it is cottage country family travel destination with a laid-back, relaxed atmosphere.

The highlight of the weekend was the boat tour of Stony Lake. We toured the area and saw some cool sites, like the “glass house” where The In-Laws starring Michael Douglas was filmed and NHL player Bob Gainey’s home. There are quite a few activities happening during the summer on the lake – Juniper Island offers an Art Festival, Film Festival, and there is the annual Mile Swim that takes place in August.

Make sure you bring your appetite with you! I always find I’m hungry in cottage country. We had lunch at the Boathouse Pub which is right on Stony lake, a popular spot where local boaters, and sledders in the winter, come in for lunch and dinner.

Sadly we missed out on dinners in Viamede’s dining room, 1885, as it was closed for a private wedding. The last time we visited, we loved the food. But we enjoyed breakfast buffet at the dining room – the view in the morning is always so tranquil.

You’ll find quite a few locals who visit the restaurant, the Boathouse or go fishing and enjoy the Marina activities or dock their boats here. But for others like us who don’t live in cottage country, Viamede is a fun destination for family travel in cottage country all year round. Disclosure: My family and I were invited by the lovely people at Viamede Resort to enjoy a complimentary weekend getaway.

There are so many variations of a green smoothie recipe but are they all tasty? That is the question!

I find it challenging to consume all of the recommended fruits and vegetable servings into your daily diet. But starting off the morning with a green smoothie is a fabulous way to get started, not to mention a great energy boost to start the day.

You may prefer your smoothie with orange juice or milk but since I’m lactose-intolerant, I use almond milk. Try buying the unsweetened vanilla almond milk which gives a hint of vanilla flavour. The frozen banana also gives the smoothie a creamy texture. If the mixture becomes too thick, I’ll just add more ice cold water.

Since it was a lovely morning, I decided to make my tasty green smoothie in the Hamilton Beach Wave Station Express Dispensing Blender. These cute and colourful blenders add a pop of colour to your kitchen and also are cute for entertaining especially in the summer. The dispenser is a great idea for serve-yourself occasions like picnics and backyard BBQs, when you’re making a fruity drink or a healthy smoothie.

The Hamilton Beach Wave Station Express Dispensing Blender has nine blending functions and 700 watts of peak power, a DuraBlend jar which is break resistant, lightweight and dishwasher safe and the Wave~Action system forces the mixture down into the blade. It’s affordable too – right now, it’s only $14.94 at Walmart for limited time period.

Tasty Green Smoothie Recipe

1 frozen banana

1 1/2 cups frozen peaches, strawberries and mango

2 cups vanilla almond milk (unsweetened)

1 cup organic kale

Optional: throw in a spoonful of protein powder

Add all of the ingredients into the blender and allow a few minutes for your green smoothie to blend. Use the dispenser attachment so you can pour your green smoothie easily into glasses and serve!  Makes about 4 cups.

So far in my “career” as a mother, I have planned and hosted 15 kids’ birthday parties. Does that make me a professional when it comes to planning birthday parties? I wouldn’t go that far! But I do know what works and what doesn’t work – for my boys anyway.

Birthdays are meant to be fun and memorable; often they turn into expensive, stressful nightmares for parents, costing hundreds of dollars. But you don’t need to go all out for your kids to have a wonderful, memorably birthday party!

When I asked my kids what their favourite birthday party was, do you know what they said? Not the year we held it at the glow-in-the-dark mini golf or the laser tag place. Or the time when I ordered a ginormous over-the-top cake (that you couldn’t even see because the glow-in-the-dark venue was too dark!) Nope.

It was at home with a few family members and their best friends. And it was the simplest things and the most important people to share it with that made their birthdays the most memorable.

I took classic birthday party ideas that we knew and loved as kids and updated them. Rather than Pin the Tail on the Donkey, it was Pin the Eyes on Lego Ninjago with the kids wearing the ninja headbands over their eyes that I had handmade. Take a classic game and update it – I’m telling you, the kids were howling. I was shocked at how much fun they had playing a simple game that I honestly thought they would find boring.

Let them eat cake! The other most important thing kids remember? The snacks and THE CAKE. I’ll give you a piece of advice that will save you a hundred dollars right now – buy or make a simple chocolate cake with regular frosting. Kids don’t like fondant. They can’t eat it, they can’t lick it, and it won’t smear on their hands or faces – no fun! Save yourself the money and get yourself a simple cake recipe, even a cake mix from a box(gasp!)and they will eat every crumb.

I’ll also save you the stress and time of cooking a bunch of food or creating cutesy hors d’oeuvres. The kids really don’t care if you’ve carved vegetables and fruit into adorable animal shapes. They just want party-size cheese pizza. Maybe you’ll order one with all the works for the adults but the kids just want cheese, trust me.

Ask me what I dislike the most about birthday parties and I’ll tell you right away – the loot bags. I hate the idea of them and I don’t even understand why they’ve become such a “thing”. But the kids LOVE THEM. They will expect one and it matters what’s in them. There better be candy or chocolate, a bouncy ball and some other cool toy or gadget, or else your guests will leave the party feeling deflated.

Don’t forget to decorate with simple streamers, balloons and sparkle for your kids’ birthday party. Add some music for those who like to dance, and you will have the complete recipe for a memorable birthday party for kids.

It’s time to Party! Try NEW OREO Birthday Cake Dessert. A cool spin on an old tradition, indulge in a scoop of this sweet birthday cake flavour or in a yummy sandwich. This might be just what your party needs.

When you hear the phrase “like a girl” — what do you hear?

Strength, talent, confidence, power?

According to the new Always Confidence and Puberty Study, only 19% of girls have a positive association with the phrase “like a girl.”

“Like a girl” in the past has carried a negative connotation. What do you mean I run “like a girl”? Or when you hear boys say you “cry like a girl”.

I’ve heard adults say, you throw “like a girl.” I even heard once a grown woman say, “don’t whine and complain like a girl.”

What exactly does that mean? Are girls weak? Can’t throw a ball or run as fast as boys? What does this phrase show our girls? That they can’t be as strong physically and emotionally? Is having feminine qualities something to be joked about, even ashamed of?

Doing anything “like a girl” is an amazing thing – so let’s help our girls first by removing the negative association with the phrase.

Always is inviting girls and women everywhere to join the movement and share what they proudly do #LikeAGirl. Let’s help change the phrase “like a girl” – watch this inspiring video, which made me cry when I saw it for the very first time.

What can you do? Tweet, take a picture, shoot a video or send a message using the hashtag #LikeAGirl to take a stand and show young girls everywhere that doing things “like a girl” should never be used as an insult – that it means being strong, talented and downright amazing.

Disclosure: I’m thrilled to be working with Always, Tampax and BeingGirl to share important information about kids and puberty!

I’ve been experimenting with cookie bars, trying to get that chewy consistency with gluten-free flours without them falling apart into crumbs. These Chocolate Chip Cookie Bars are chewy, chocolatey and you won’t believe they are gluten free and vegan too.

I have reduced the amount of sugar to about 2/3 of a cup when I ran out of coconut palm sugar but couldn’t tell the difference. I’ve also made these with grape seed oil when I ran out of butter, and they were still tasty, albeit a little greasy.

Ingredients:

1 cup almond flour

½ cup tapioca

½ cup sorghum flour

1 cup coconut palm sugar

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon baking soda

½ cup grapeseed oil (you can substitute for butter if you can do dairy)

2 flax eggs (you can substitute with real eggs if just gluten free)

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 cups vegan chocolate chips (you can substitute for regular chocolate chips)

Chocolate Chip Cookie Bars

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Mix together oil and sugar. Add the flax eggs, vanilla and stir. Add flours, salt and baking soda and mix until combined. Add chocolate chips.
Move cookie dough into a parchment paper lined baking pan and spread out, using a spatula or hands to press down evenly.

Bake cookie bars for 25-30 minutes or until the top of the bars are light golden brown and the edges start to pull away from the pan. Cool and then cut bars into squares.

Try not to eat them all in one sitting!

P.S. Aren’t these linens adorable? They’re from Hen House.

The official grand opening began with the choir from Enid Capron Primary, the resort’s adopted school singing the National Anthem. The evening continued with speeches from government officials and dignitaries from Turks and Caicos Islands and the Caribbean, the official ribbon cutting, as well as videos showcasing Sandals and Beaches Resorts.
