Would you consider yourself a TV/movie junkie? Are you always looking out for the next show or movie to watch? You’ve already watched all the great televisions series, spent many hours having movie marathons. Now what? Wondering what to watch on Netflix winter 2016, all bundled up on the couch by the fire, popcorn in hand?

Here are my top picks of what to watch on Netflix this winter:

“Making a Murderer” – Streaming now

Are you one of the many who watched Making a Murder on Netflix? Over the holidays, I watched the 10-part documentary which explores the story of Steven Avery, a Manitowoc County, Wisconsin man who served 18 years in prison for the sexual assault and attempted murder of Penny Beerntsen. Avery was exonerated with the aid of the Innocence Project, when the DNA in the case was matched to another man guilty of crimes in the area.

After Avery was released from prison in 2003, he filed a $36 million civil lawsuit against Manitowoc County and several county officials associated with his first arrest. Soon after filing the lawsuit, he was accused of the murder of Teresa Halbach, a photographer who was last seen on the Avery family property to photograph a minivan for sale.

The series also covers the arrest, prosecution, and conviction of his nephew Brendan Dassey, who was also accused and convicted as an accomplice in the murder.  Making a Murderer was filmed over the course of ten years, with the creators moving back and forth from New York City to Wisconsin during filming.

People are still talking about the series, and whether or not Avery is guilty. This is a Netflix must-watch.

“The X-Files” – Streaming Now

I was a diehard X-Files fan when the show premiered back in 1993 (that was such a good year). So you can imagine my utter joy when the X-Files revival hit screens this month. Now, “new” fans can watch all nine seasons on Netflix. That means I don’t need to dig into my old VHS tapes and hook up my old VCR anymore to watch old episodes.

In one of the longest-running science fiction series in network TV history, FBI special agents investigate unexplained, mind-bending cases known as “X-Files.” Though the government is convinced that the outlandish reports are false, conspiracy theorist Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and realist Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson), for most of the series, stop at nothing to prove that “the truth is out there.” Series creator Chris Carter also serves as executive producer of the thrilling pop-culture phenomenon.

What else is coming up on Netflix that you need to watch?

“Fuller House” – February 26

Full House fans will love that the series, which ended in 1995, is revived! Uncle Jesse and crew will be back February 26th… I will watch just for John Stamos (hubba hubba). Will Fuller House be as good as the original? Likely not, but the nostalgia makes me excited for this reunion.

“Love” – February 19

I love Judd Apatow’s films, such as “Knocked Up,” “The 40-year-old Virgin” and especially, “This is 40”, so I’m looking forward to this romantic comedy starring Gillian Jacobs and Paul Rust. The first 10-episode first season will debut on February 19, 2016. “Love” will be a “down-to-earth look at dating,” exploring male and female perspectives on romantic relationships through the characters Mickey and Gus.

“Flaked” – March 11

Flaked is an upcoming Netflix original comedy series which will star Will Arnett and will be developed by him along with Arrested Development creator/executive producer Mitch Hurwitz. It will premiere on March 11, 2016.

The eight-episode comedy, set in the insular world of Venice, Calif., centers on a self-appointed guru who falls for the object of his best friend’s fascination. Arnett plays Chip, a man doing his “honest best to stay one step ahead of his own lies.”

“The Crown” – TBD

The Crown will premiere sometime this year but it already looks good! The first series of 10 one-hour episodes will focus on Queen Elizabeth II as a 25-year-old newlywed faced with the daunting prospect of leading the world’s most famous monarchy while forging a relationship with legendary Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill. The British Empire is in decline, the political world is in disarray, and a young woman takes the throne….a new era is dawning. Peter Morgan’s masterfully researched scripts reveal the Queen’s private journey behind the public facade with daring frankness. Prepare to be welcomed into the coveted world of power and privilege and behind locked doors in Westminster and Buckingham Palace….the leaders of an empire await.

Can we just scratch January off the 2016 calendar? The first month of this new year has been a complete bust. I don’t mean to be a negative nelly but my mood has been outright depressing. I’m in a winter slump – officially.

The hype of the holidays is beyond over, and despite the welcoming denouement, the subsequent sentiments of sadness have not yet dissipated. I can’t shake off this icky feeling, can’t seem to get back into the productive groove I was in before Christmas.

The break was much needed but maybe too long?

I’ve lost my MOJO and I can’t get it back.

The winter blues are really kicking in now, even though we’ve had pretty decent weather lately. I’m writing my book which will published next spring and that’s exciting. But I’m generally feeling uninspired.

I’m taking my vitamins, going to the gym, taking time to de-stress and yet I’m still feeling sluggish, unmotivated and just MEH.

The news of the layoffs of many media and publishing employees makes me question my industry. I feel saddened that traditional journalism has taken such a downward turn. The world is changing and how we consume, share and present the news has evolved. I’m happy to be working in new media, but we need conventional media and journalists to present unbiased information about the world around us. Blog posts and opinion pieces serve their purpose but the less sharing of traditional media is not beneficial to anyone.

Are you in a winter slump?

Need to take some of my own advice on Beating the Winter Blues.

One of my favourite fairytales growing up was Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Forever etched in my childhood memory was the beautiful princess, her adorable dwarfs Doc, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy, Bashful, Sneezy, Dopey and, of course, the wicked Queen in the classic 1937 Disney film.

Forever enchanting and inspiring, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs embodies The Walt Disney Signature Collection’s legacy of animation. In this epic story of love and friendship, the kind and beautiful princess Snow White wins the hearts of the Seven Dwarfs and triumphs over the evil plans of a wicked Queen.

Named “The Greatest Animated Film Of All Time” by the American Film Institute, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is in High Definition Blu-ray and for the first time ever on Digital HD, with special features for the entire family.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs will be available on Digital HD, January 19th and Blu-ray Combo Pack, February 2, 2016.

Like I need another hour in the day, I’ve picked up a new hobby – painting furniture. Refinishing and/or painting furniture can breathe new life into an outdated piece, bringing it from old and boring to modern and contemporary.

Chalk Paint™ by Annie Sloan is a versatile paint that would work beautifully on furniture without priming or sanding. It’s easy to use, quick to dry and can use the paint with a variety of paint techniques. It has a velvety, ultra matte finish and comes in an array of gorgeous colours.

How easy is it to paint furniture? So easy! You can use Chalk Paint™ decorative paint by Annie Sloan to reveal the grain in wood creates a classic rustic look with an ultra-thin layer of paint, or paint a piece of furniture several coats for a smooth finish. Or you can achieve a vintage look, or a rustic chipped look – depending on the furniture you are refinishing.

I needed a new foyer table and knew that I would like to find a used piece to refinish. After some searching, I found this antique front hall table.

After looking through the Chalk Paint™ colours, I knew I wanted to do a vintage look on this piece. My hallway is quite narrow so I wanted a lighter colour to open up the space. So I decided on Old White.

With a new year comes a new opportunity to start over and set some new goals. January is a month of reflection of the past year; a time to regroup, refocus and begin planning and scheduling for the rest of the year.

I find having a list of goals in place makes it easier to crank the gears into motion, starting off the new year on a positive and productive note. I find it more challenging, however, to push through with fresh ideas and a renewed sense of hope in a month that happens to be bitterly cold and miserable.

Two years ago, my word was flourish because I felt I had built a solid foundation in my career and it was time to see it grow. In 2015, I couldn’t choose one word so I opted for three theme words for the year.

Do you have a theme word for this year? Narrowing your theme for the year to just one word can be a challenge. How can you sum up everything that you want to achieve this year in just one word? If you haven’t chosen a word in previous years, why not try doing it this year?

What is your word for 2016?

What is your word for 2016

My word for 2016 is:

nurture

~ care for and encourage the growth or development of.

~ the process of caring for and encouraging the growth or development of someone or something.
Synonyms

support

foster

cultivate

I want to nurture what I’ve already created in my professional life. I want to nurture my relationships both personally and professionally. I want to nurture the people in my life who I love and care for most. Lastly, I want to nurture my own physical, mental and emotional health.

It takes a little bit of mindfulness and a little bit of attention to others to be a good listener, which helps cultivate emotional nurturing and engagement. ~ Deepak Chopra

Nurturing a feeling makes it proliferate. Choose wisely. Joy, kindness, love, & caring will illuminate your life.

Competing at the highest level is not about winning. It’s about preparation, courage, understanding and nurturing your people, and heart. Winning is the result. ~ Joe Torre

What’s on your travel list for 2016? While exotic places like Myanmar and Sri Lanka are on my travel radar one day, this year I have narrowed down my travel list for 2016 that are more attainable.

New York Times’ 52 Places to Go in 2016 includes my great city of Toronto, along with some other lovely destinations that would be on any wanderluster’s travel bucket list. Some places on NY Times’ list are questionable, however.

So I made my own list – a travel list for 2016 that I could likely and hopefully achieve this year. Here are my top places on my travel list for 2016:

My dream, since I was a child myself, was to rent a convertible and drive alone the Californian coastline. Ever wonder how to make restaurant style chicken wings at home, that are crispy but not deep fried?  Ready to discover the ultimate guide on How to Make Chicken Wings at Home? Get ready to elevate your kitchen game with this crispy, flavorful recipe that will have you ditching the deep fryer for good!

Making chicken wings at home is simple, however you will need to have some extra to prepare. Save this recipe for a day when you’re feeling adventurous and ready to unleash your inner chef. A busy weeknight may not be the best time to make restaurant style chicken wings at home.

It’s all in the preparation of the wings that is the trick. These chicken wings are oven baked and broiled – not deep fried. No deep fryer necessary – with just a large baking sheet and your trusty oven, you’ll be well on your way to crispy perfection.

And hey, if you’re all about that air fryer life, don’t worry—I’ve got another recipe waiting for you. You can check out my air fryer chicken wings recipe here.  But for now, let’s stick to the basics and keep cleanup to a minimum. This recipe is done in the oven on a large baking sheet, so no need to worry about clean-up!

How to Make Chicken Wings at Home

Ingredients

40 split chicken wings

1 tablespoon cooking oil – I use grape seed oil

1 teaspoon sea salt

1 teaspoon black pepper

Sauce of choice – BBQ, Frank’s Red Hot, etc.

Ranch or blue cheese sauce for dipping

Method

Some chicken wings recipes call for mixing sauces and cooking along with the wings – but that will only leave you with burnt wings and a smoky kitchen. Also, the wings tend to be undercooked with some chicken wings recipes you find.

Instead, boil the wings thoroughly first to ensure thorough cooking. After boiling for about 20 minutes, remove and place on a parchment-lined and greased baking sheet. You need to line a large baking sheet with parchment paper – this is important. Don’t use tin foil or skip the paper or else the wings will stick, even if you grease a pan. Season chicken wings with salt and pepper.

How to Make Chicken Wings at Home

Next, broil on low heat in the oven for about 20 minutes. Flip the wings over and broil for another 20 minutes, or until crispy.

Transfer chicken wings to a bowl. Add sauce of choice like Frank’s Buffalo sauce, and shake in bowl. Serve!

Happy New Year! Forget the New Year’s resolutions. This year, start doing things that will benefit you, your physical and mental health, and your life. Here are 10 things to start doing this year, if you’re not already.

10 Things to Start Doing This Year (If You’re Not Already)

Be kind to yourself

First of all, be kind to yourself. Don’t make resolutions you know you can’t keep. You’ll end up setting yourself up for failure, leading to lower self-esteem and self-confidence. Instead, make smaller, more attainable goals that you are confident you can reach.

Forgive

Be honest with every aspect of your life, and if there is something you know you need to work on, do it. Don’t beat yourself up for mistakes that you’ve made. Forgive yourself. Now is the time to reflect on those mistakes, take the lessons learned from them, and move forward, leaving those negative memories behind.

Forgive others. Don’t allow the anger to fester even further. Anger and resentment eats away at your soul. Find a way to forgive and let go.

Be kind to others

Everyone is fighting a battle of some sort, so be kind to others because you don’t know where they’ve been, what they’ve experienced and what they’re going through now. Be empathetic towards others. Don’t take things personally. A simple act of kindness goes a long way.

Spend time with your loved ones

Don’t waste any more time on people who bring you down, cause you pain, stress or unhappiness. Allow true love and joy into your life. Nurture those honest relationships that are effortless and real. Don’t take your loved ones for granted either; tell them how much they mean to you. You don’t need a huge number of friends; a few close friends are just enough.

Enjoy the little moments

The only truth is what is happening to you right now, at this very moment. Try to find joy in the day-to-day, otherwise you will lose out on so many opportunities for happiness. If you’re constantly thinking about future events, the present will slip by, leaving you feeling empty. Don’t lose time worrying about something that has yet to happen.

Be realistic

Yes it’s wonderful to have big dreams and goals but be realistic. Taking smaller steps towards reaching your goals will set you up for success. Work hard doing and not just dreaming. Strive for your best – it’s not necessary to be perfect at everything you do. Sometimes you have to accept things for what they are, and accept people for who they are as well. Obsessing with being #1 all the time is exhausting and detrimental to your own health and sanity.

10 Things to Start Doing This Year (If You're Not Already)

Be attentive

You know that nagging feeling you get when your gut is trying to tell you something? Listen to your instincts. That inner voice is always right. Taking the time to slow down and be fully aware of your mind and body will allow you to move forward with clarity. Have purpose in everything you do.

Be positive

Focus on changing the things you can change, and throw your hands up to what you can’t. Don’t waste time and energy on things that are beyond your control. Replace those nagging, negative thoughts into positive ones.

Choose happy

While we all strive for happiness, sometimes our circumstances are challenging. Accept your current situation and try to find some joy, somehow. Many people think they will be happy once they reach a certain point in their lives – when they lose weight, get a new job, buy a big house, or make more money. The problem is, you’re missing out on being happy right now. You’ll spend your life working towards something without appreciating the steps to get there.

Take care of yourself

Take care of yourself first. No, it isn’t selfish – it’s crucial. If your needs are put on the back burner for the sake of others, you are sabotaging yourself. You’re not any help to others if you don’t take care of yourself first. Eat well, exercise, meditate, take your vitamins especially vitamin D, drink water. Do what makes you happy – it will make you a better person. If you choose happiness, you will see the world differently.

What will you be working on this year?
