There are few things in life that illicit a barrage of unsolicited advice like becoming a parent does. It begins from the time a well-meaning stranger in the grocery notices your burgeoning belly, and it does not end when your child goes off to school. Most of the advice gurus really do have the best of intentions, however, some can be forward or pushy in their deliverance of said advice.

I have now parented six children and therefore been on the receiving end of an ocean of advice. It took several children, and some age under my belt, to realize this sage wisdom. I only need less than 10% of the advice I am given about raising my children.

Before you shake your head and assume me a know-it-all, let me clarify. We all need to learn that each child we have is different from the rest. What works in one person’s home often needs to be altered significantly to work in another’s.

The amazing realization is that I can trust my gut on most things, as can you. It happens when all the other moms are giving you breastfeeding advice but you just know how you should handle something. It happens at the pediatrician’s office when there is a nagging suspicion that you need to push for further testing. It happens at the playground when you just know there is a child you should have yours avoid.

You are the best mom for your child and it’s time to own this motherhood thing.

Skim the surface

When you are sinking under the layers of advice heaped upon you, skim the surface and take the highlights.  Don’t get bogged down with excessive steps that many will tell you about, just skim the surface of the advice, and heed the Cliff’s notes.

Let it roll

When you know in  your heart of hearts that you are making the right decision, and there are naysayers, let it roll off your back.  You were designed to be your children’s mom and you know what is best for them.

Listen to your gut

If your gut tells you that someone or something is not right, listen to it.  There will be people you don’t feel right about, there will be situations that don’t sit well, and there will be professionals who tell you otherwise.  Listen most closely though to that tiny voice inside and trust it.

Have confidence

This is the hardest when you are new to parenting and you fear failing.  However, this is what most closely goes along with owning this motherhood thing, have confidence that you are rocking this and that you are capable.  Surround yourself with positive influences (not wordy advice givers) and keep your head held high.  Not everyone will agree with your style of mothering, and that is okay, you don’t agree with everyone elses’, right?  That is how we raise a world full of individuals.

Now, before you shake your head and think, isn’t she telling me not to take advice, yet she’s sharing some?  Yes, I am.  I am telling you that this is the hardest job ever, this motherhood thing, but that you are going to be amazing at it, in fact, you are already.

That is the best advice you need.

Owning Motherhood Throwing Advice Out the Window | amotherworld.com

What was the first book you read to your child? Some of my favourites were Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown and Love You Forever by Robert Munsch.

Reading books to children stimulates their imagination and expands their understanding of the world. It helps kids develop language and listening skills and prepares them to understand the written word. Once kids grow and begin school, reading is an essential skill they must learn in order to become successful.

Did you know that 30% of Canadian Grade 3 students lack basic literacy skills[1]? My kids are reluctant readers, so when they find an author or genre that draws their attention, I jump right on it. Right now, it’s all about scary stories… they want to read Stephen King books, though they might be a little too mature for my younger son.

I’ve told my boys – if you ever want me to purchase a book that you will read, I will buy it for you. We’ve taken many trips to Chapters and spent time browsing through the Young Readers section, looking for titles and book covers that pique their curiosity. They’ve often come home from school with a borrowed book from the school library – one that their teacher has recommended for them. I’m so grateful that their teachers are so involved in their learning success, introducing them to new genres and authors, and that our library has a great selection of books to choose from.

But what if we didn’t have a school library? Or what if there weren’t enough books to borrow?

Many schools in economically disadvantaged communities in Canada can only afford one new library book per year for every three children[2]. That’s it! Research shows that children who struggle with literacy are four times more likely to drop out of high school[3].

Elementary school libraries need more funding, and that’s where the Indigo Adopt a School (AAS) program comes in. It’s an annual, three-week campaign that aims to put more books into the hands of children. This year, over 500 schools are registered to participate in the program. It will run from September 16 to October 8.

There are two ways that schools are participating:

  1. Indigo, Chapters and Coles stores “adopt” local high-needs elementary schools in their communities to fundraise on their behalf, with 100% of the funds raised in-store being donated to help revitalize the schools’ libraries.

During the campaign, Indigo employees together with their communities raise in-store donations, with every dollar contributed helping to transform their adopted school’s library.

  1. In addition to the “adoptees,” over 350 participating schools will fundraise online through adoptaschool.indigo.ca to help bolster children’s literacy development and encourage their students to foster a lifelong love of reading.

Each participating school is also eligible to receive up to an additional $1,200 for books through the Foundation’s matching initiatives.

All schools participating in the Adopt a School program receive 100% of the funds raised in-store and online at adoptaschool.indigo.ca. At the end of the campaign, the Foundation will provide each school with their funds as an eGiftcard for the purchase of books. In addition, the schools will receive a 30% discount on books at Indigo, Chapters and Coles stores.

Help Encourage a Love of Reading with Indigo Adopt a School

Adopt A School Story Contest

Canadians can also get involved by sharing a short story on the online profile of a participating school, with an option to “heart” their favourite stories. In each province, the top five schools with the most “heart” stories will have a chance to win a top prize of $2,500 Indigo eGiftcard to purchase new books. The remaining four schools in each province will receive $500 Indigo eGiftcard for new library resources. The top prize will be selected by random draw.

How to support your local school:

Book Bonus!

For every $20 donation online (adoptaschool.indigo.ca), the equivalent value of two books, made to a participating school, the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation will contribute a donation of $10, the equivalent of one extra book, up to $1,000.

Tell a Story, Give a Story!

Submit a story through adoptaschool.indigo.ca in support of a participating school of their choice, with no donation required. For every story shared, the Foundation will donate $10, the equivalent of a book to support the students at that school, up to $200.

We’ve had the warmest September that I can remember! While I’m still wearing summer dresses, soon enough I’ll be trading the shorts and tanks for jeans and sweaters.

Longing for a closet overhaul this fall? Follow these easy Fall style tips and tricks to add a little flare to some old favourites and keep your current classics looking like new.

Be Bold

The head-to-toe black minimalist look is always a classic, and some women prefer to keep things basic black all the time. But why not throw in some bold colour into your wardrobe? Try incorporating Pantone’s Top 10 Fall 2017 Colours such as Grenadine Red and Marina Blue into your everyday look. These bright shades are the perfect way to transition to fall and stay stylish.

Pro tip: To keep these colours looking like new and radiant all year long, use OxiClean Colour Shield Laundry Stain Remover. It protects colours, and provides 50 per cent more brightening power versus the leading value detergent alone.

Winter Whites

Whites are no longer just for summer! Nope, the rule of “no white after Labour Day” no longer applies. Layer soft creams, oyster or parchment tones to create a cozy look as you transition into fall.

Pro tip: Even winter whites can begin to look dreary after a while. To keep your favourite pieces looking like new, longer, try OxiClean White Revive Laundry Stain Remover. It whitens 40% better than chlorine bleach with powerful whitening and brightening agents that won’t damage colours.

Old is New Again

Your geometric prints from high school are back in style and ready for a reboot. Pair your retro pieces with a pair of skinny jeans or a slick leather jacket for a modern look.

Pro tip: Revitalize old favourites with OxiClean Max Force Foam Laundry Pre-Treater. Pump it directly onto a stain that was never removed last fall, and gently rub and let it soak overnight up to 7 days before throwing it in the wash. The powerful supercharged foam sticks to stains and works to blast them away. Its compact size also makes it easy for storage, and it will become a must-have for treating stains!

Are you hosting Thanksgiving lunch or dinner this year? Planning to host a big family feast can be stressful, but it doesn’t have to be. If you plan your Thanksgiving feast with these top 6 dependable hosting tips, your guests will be impressed… and stuffed just like your turkey!

Top 6 Dependable Hosting Tips for Thanksgiving

Set a Schedule

You can’t get all your Thanksgiving preparations done in one day. Don’t leave your food shopping list for the day before!

Schedule each day for a specific task; for example, Tuesday iron table linens. Wednesday, wash serving dishes and fine china; Thursday, clean house and go grocery shopping. Friday, brine the turkey, bake the pies. Saturday, set the table etc.

Pre-plan the Menu

Set a menu, and stick to it. You can’t go wrong with the basics like turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing and vegetables. Decide whether you’ll buy or bake desserts. Make your checklist and buy the essentials you need such as groceries, wine, and flowers or other decorative items a few days before so you’re not rushing around last minute.

Make Ahead

The most stressful part of a meal is the last-minute rush.  When you’re planning your menu, look for dishes that can be made ahead such as pies or casseroles. There are many dishes you can prepare several days before and reheat the day of Thanksgiving.

Bake your apple pie and prepare cranberry sauce two days before. Wash and chop vegetables the day before in order to save valuable time. Scalloped potatoes, for example, can be prepared and put in the refrigerator before baking. If you want a juicy turkey, make sure to brine for 24-48 hours before cooking the day of.

Make a Cooking Schedule

If you have a double oven, or two ovens, then holidays are a snap! But most of us don’t, so you’ll have to plan what goes in the oven, and what cooks on the stovetop, and when.

The timing of your Thanksgiving dishes can be tricky since the turkey is in the oven for several hours leading up to the meal. You can use a slow cooker to make mashed potatoes, leaving room on the stovetop to prepare other side dishes, such as butter-glazed carrots, brussel sprouts and gravy.

While your turkey needs a half hour to cool down once cooked, you can then reheat any prepared dishes in the oven.

Keep it Simple

Thanksgiving isn’t the time to try out new recipes; it’s a time for your tried and true dishes to shine. Your Thanksgiving feast will be better if you stick with what you know. If guests ask to bring something, accept their help – delegate side dishes or desserts. In a big time crunch, host a Thanksgiving pot luck – host should prepare the turkey, gravy and stuffing.

Dependable Appliances

Entertaining is definitely easier when you have appliances that were built with dependability and power in mind, such as Maytag ranges and cooktops that have Power Preheat which allows home chefs to cook faster – so guests can eat sooner.

And once your family feast is over, the Maytag Top Control dishwasher with the Power Blast cycle can help remove stuck-on food with high pressure spray jets, and hot stream to finish the job.

Fingerprint-resistant stainless steel on all Maytag kitchen appliances means you don’t have to worry about fingerprints from little – or messy cooking hands.

By following these 6 dependable hosting tips for Thanksgiving, I can assure your special day will run smoothly. If you plan ahead and are super organized, your Thanksgiving feast will be a success!

Kids birthday parties sure seem to have become quite the “thing”. Planning a kid’s birthday party is like planning a mini-wedding. When did it become so complicated and expensive?

I’ve gone to parties where the parents are flustered but suck it up and drop well over $1,000 on the whole event. It’s quite impressive but who are we trying to please? The parents of the children, or the whiny child who probably will grow up being completely unappreciative because they’ve been given everything?

From clowns to face-painters, trampoline parties to indoor playgrounds… from princess themed to pirates… one mom will attempt to outdo the next in hosting these birthday extravaganza-paloozas! And that’s not even the gifts!

Asking your guests to purchase a gift for a young child from a gift list seems a little over the top. A birthday gift registry for a child?!  I mean, I can understand a wedding or a baby shower so that the new bride or mom-to-be isn’t stuck with 12 coffee makers and 15 baby blankets. But a birthday registry for little Bobby or young Suzie?

A woman was left outraged after her brother presented her with a birthday list for her two-year-old niece, AND demanded to know how much she was willing to spend on the toddler. She wrote in the now-deleted thread that both her brother and sister-in-law asked her to stick to a list of approved presents for their little girl.

An “approved” list… like a wedding registry. When did a birthday gift registry become a thing?! Should kids have a gift registry for their birthday?

The brother had told her that if she wasn’t going to buy off the list then she didn’t need to bother buying anything! To make matters ickier, the woman who posted, named “Underthemoonlight” revealed that her children receive only a birthday card “with a tenner” for their gift (tenner is a ten-dollar bill). It appears to be quite selfish to give a gift of cash, but demand that guests purchase gifts from a curated list, and how much the guest would be spending. How rude!

Should Parents Have a Gift Registry for Their Kids' Birthday?

“She asked me how much I was spending so she could organize what to pick out of her list from me that covered how much I would be spending,” the woman wrote, according to the Daily Mail. “I was a bit taken back. We have very minimal contact, they don’t ask about the kids and have very little interaction with us. All our children have all had tenner in the birthday card, which is fair enough.”

What do you think about having a birthday list/registry for a young child’s birthday party? Smart or silly?

Social media is such a huge a part of our daily lives nowadays, with users checking their Facebook or Instagram several times a day, and watching  their favourite YouTubers. It seems that most users are concerned with how many “likes” and views they can get; the more, the better.

The parents behind the popular YouTube channel Daddyofive featured everyday vlogs to complicated pranks, with the children being the ones pranked. Their YouTube channel had garnered over 700,000 subscribers. The parents of the children, Mike and Heather Martin, were called out for exploiting their children for the sake of YouTube views.

In the videos, there were disturbing clips of the children are crying uncontrollably while the parents are swearing and yelling at them. In one of the videos, the Martins poured ink onto their youngest son Cody’s bedroom floor and then blamed him for making the mess. They swore at him angrily for making the mess and when he denied it, they accused him of lying. The boy, Cody then cried hysterically, along with his brother Alex, who was also being pranked.

After the online backlash, the Martins apologized for the videos in a statement.

What started out as family fun and entertainment took on a life of its own. Before we knew it, we were caught-up in our families popularity which led to some poor decisions. Upon reflection, we realize there were mistakes made that caused our family some pain; we offer our most humble and sincere apology to those we negatively impacted and offended, particularly our wonderful children.

“Our children are safe. Off camera and out of character, they are normal, happy kids who play sports and love being with their family and friends. Thank you for your understanding as we work through this difficult time.”

But the apology wasn’t enough; Rose Hall, the biological mother of Mike Martin’s two youngest children, Cody, nine, and Emma, 12, uploaded a video with her lawyer, Tim Conlon of the Custody Place, saying that she had emergency custody of the kids, who were the main targets of the ‘pranks’ of Mike and his second wife, Heather.

“Very heartbreaking and disturbing to see my kids abused,,” said Hall. “They’re doing good,” Hall says on the video. “They’re getting back to their playful selves.”

“The kids are in a deprogramming sort of mode in the moment,” said Conlon.

The pair thanked people on YouTube who persisted on trying to get the children taken away from the couple. An online petition drew over 20,000 signatures to get CPS to investigate the Martins who live in Baltimore, Maryland. DaddyoFive’s videos have all been removed from the YouTube channel.

Now, the Martins have been sentenced to five years of probation. Michael and Heather Martin entered Alford pleas Monday in Frederick County Circuit Court after they were charged with child neglect.

The Martins also cannot post recordings or images of Emma and Cody to social media unless it is for legitimate family purposes, the Baltimore Sun reported. The couple must also submit evaluations and adhere to mental health treatment as advised by their supervising agent.

How could these parents make such a bad judgement call? Are social media “likes” and views more important than their children’s mental health and safety?

What do you think about this story?

Do you have older kids? Older as in off to college or university?

No matter how old your kids get, you’ll never stop being their mom. So when that bittersweet milestone of your baby leaving the nest becomes a reality, you’ll sleep better at night knowing that you’ve equipped them with the tools and knowledge they need to succeed. What are some questions parents ask their college kids so that they’re prepared for being away from home?

Hopefully your teenager knows a thing or two about proper hygiene by now! Your soon-to-be adult will think they know everything, but when push comes to shove, they’ll be calling mom for tips and tricks on how to do their own laundry. Some other things, however, they may not need your help asking… ahem.

Here are Three Questions Parents Ask Their College Kids:

Three Questions Parents Ask Their College Kids

“Did you do your own laundry?”

Stain removers, sorting and scooping are not for students. Let’s face it. They’re just looking for an easy solution to the challenge ahead – no clean socks or underwear and they’ve got a date in a few hours. Send them off to school with a container of the new Arm & Hammer™ Plus OxiClean™ 3-In-1 Power Paks. This all-in-one detergent tackles tough stains, doesn’t require any measuring or scooping and is student-budget friendly. If you’re lucky, it may also mean you’re not greeted with a load of dirty laundry every time your kid comes home to visit.

Don’t be surprised when you receive a call or text saying, “Mom, how do I sort my laundry?” Or “Where do I find the washing instructions?” To help make laundry easier (and prevent shrinking t-shirts and colour bleed disasters at the same time!), educate them on the proper laundry symbols. In fact, you can download a fun laundry symbols postcard from Arm & Hammer Laundry here that lists the most common symbols and what they mean.

Laundry Symbols

“Did you take a shower?”

Just because you’re the one who’s prepping the kids for back-to-school, doesn’t mean they can’t teach you a cool thing or two – beauty hacks are no exception! One must-have item that’s as just as popular amongst moms as with students is Batiste Dry Shampoo. It is the world’s #1 dry shampoo (*sold in 50 countries) for a reason – it instantly refreshes your hair between washes, no water required.  It works by absorbing excess oil from the roots leaving hair looking clean and fresh.

So, whether you’re running late or just looking for an instant refresh, new Batiste Dry Shampoo Heavenly Volume is a saving grace as it has the additional benefit of transforming hair with gorgeous, touchable volume and bounce. This is one item you won’t forget anytime you’re in a pinch and who knows, you might even find yourself sneaking into her bag to borrow some when you’re out!

“Are you practicing safe sex?”

One of the biggest challenges as a parent, is how to talk to your kids about safe sex. While it can be uncomfortable, it’s a necessary conversation and part of life! The harsh reality is that kids are having sex, yet not properly protecting themselves.* In fact, a study found that almost two-thirds (64 per cent) of post-secondary students across the country had a sexual encounter within the past year. Furthermore, 72 per cent of students engaged in intercourse during their last sexual encounter, yet only about half (51 per cent) reported using a condom.

If you have a child heading off to school, buy condoms for them and pack them in their suitcase.  Trojan™ condoms are the number one condom choice of Canadians for protection.

With back-to-school time approaching, parents will soon again be pulling out their wallets to pay for all the things… back-to-school outfits, school supplies, school-appropriate snacks, and much more.

How hectic do you find back-to-school shopping? It truly depends on the number of kids you have, plus what age they are! My teen and tween boys are growing at a rapid rate, which means we’ll be shopping for many new items… clothing, sturdy backpacks and binders, running shoes, as well as new (expensive) hockey gear for the upcoming season.

I’m one of those people who rarely carry around cash anymore. When I’m shopping, I love being able to conveniently pull out my debit card and tap it to pay. I can easily navigate through checkout, and be on my way. After all, our daily routines are scheduled to a tee – time is always of the essence.

Interac Flash® is a convenient and secure way to pay for purchases because you don’t have to enter your PIN, or fumble around for change. Just hold your Interac Flash card up to the contactless point-of-sale reader, and you’re done.
