The concept is so simple that it is easy, too easy to overlook. But it is something that can change how you and your teen interact with one another and consequently, change your family dynamics for the better.

And it can be expressed in a single word: appreciation.

Teenagers want, and need, to feel appreciated because it gives them a sense of personal value. The coach who applauds a good play or the boss who acknowledges the focus and dedication used to complete a project or task help to build and reinforce a teenager’s sense of worth as a contributor to a team, an organization, the community. But teens also need to feel they have value within their family.

Too often, the assumption is made that a teenager knows how much they are loved and valued as a member of the family and household, but this may not be the case. As we rush through our responsibilities each day and often look to our teenagers for help with chores around the house, making meals and looking after younger siblings, it is important to make a conscious effort to thank the teen in an honest and unrushed manner.

An expression of true appreciation will go a long way to help the teenager feel their efforts are valued and that they are an integral part of the family unit. In addition, teenagers are less likely to become annoyed and resentful about pitching in to help out when they receive positive feedback and gratitude for what they have done.

Adding physical indications of appreciation and affection for your teenager can further enhance this positivity. When away from home, verbal praise can be accompanied by simple touch – a stroke on the arm, a pat on the back, or a quick arm around the shoulders is enough to get the message across. At home, where teens are more comfortable and less concerned with appearances, full hugs can – and should – be given when demonstrating gratitude.

Additionally, because you can never be certain what your teenager is thinking or feeling, hugs and verbal indications of affection within the home should also be given “just because.” This will provide your teenager with a sense of overall love and belonging within the family regardless of how they happen to be participating at any given moment. It may also give your teen the boost they need if they are troubled or stressed.

Demonstrating appreciation and affection for your teen and their efforts will improve their outlook with regard to both their place in the family and their value outside of the home. This will have a positive impact on the overall dynamics of your family.

As a bonus, by taking the time to recognize your teenager more often, you will gain a greater sense of pride in your teen and their accomplishments. You will also gain enjoyment yourself by implementing the “just because” hugs and words of affection, but most importantly, you will help your teenager to gain a strong sense of their own value as an individual – not for any specific accomplishment, but simply because they are there.

It is a simple act that holds the power to make an extreme difference.

Britney Spears is engaged!

Who is the lucky man and future step-dad to her boys, Sean Preston and Jayden James?

Jason Trawick, a 40 year old talent manager and her former agent.

Here are five things about Jason Trawick:

1.  Trawick graduated from Michigan State University and received an MBA from Texas A&M University. He once worked for the New York Daily News.

2.  Trawick first met Spears in 2006, when he was an agent at William Morris Endeavor Entertainment and began representing her.  He also represented Heidi Klum, Taylor Swift, Paris Hilton and Hilary Duff.

3.  He is credited with helping Brit score her guest role on How I Met Your Mother in 2008, helping her also get through her divorce from the father of her kids, Keven Federline.

4.  Remember when Brit had that public meltdown and shave her head and go into rehab?  Trawick also helped Brit reunite her with estranged parents Jamie and Lynn, and manager Larry Rudolph.

5.  Trawick is back in the role as Britney’s manager since May 2011.

Congrats to them!

Before this holiday season, I had never heard of The Elf on the Shelf.  Then again, it’s fairly new Christmas “tradition”, created in 2005.

If you haven’t heard about it yet, it’s an elf figure that acts as the eyes and ears of Santa Claus… so Santa knows who to put on the naughty list and who has been nice.  A family “adopts” an elf and then becomes a “part of the family’s Christmas” every year.

They can’t be touched or else they will lose their magic.  They also listen to everything that happens in the house.

I see disaster already.

Beside the obvious creepy factor,  here are five reasons why I won’t get an Elf on the Shelf.

5 Reasons Why I Don’t Like The Elf on the Shelf

why i don't like elf on the shelf

1.  The Creep Factor

Firstly, that elf will know exactly what I’m doing at each and every moment… like finishing up the kids’ chocolates, or having a cocktail before happy hour… oh wait, the Elf isn’t real.

2.  It’ll make my kids crazy – can’t deal

The scary thought is that my kids will be on such excellent behaviour at home, that they’ll burst out into craziness the moment they step foot outside.

So far, it’s been the other way around – they behave well at school and turn into monsters as soon as they come home.  And although my kids often drive me to bang my head against the wall, I would much rather deal with the lil’ devils here than multiple phone calls and pink slips from the school.

3.  I’m already using the “Santa card”

I figure, I already use the “Santa knows what you’re up to” line, which I usually start super early like right after Halloween in order to squeeze every opportunity out of that one, so I’m waaaay ahead of the Elf.

4.  I don’t need more work

“Before the family awakes each morning, their special scout elf will fly back to their home from the North Pole. However, since these elves like to play games, don’t expect to find them in the same spot!  While some like to hide in the freezer (probably because it reminds them of the North Pole) and others prefer to sit on the fireplace mantle or hang from the chandelier, these elves love to play hide-and-seek with their families.”

Uhhh, who has to move the Elf – me?  Doesn’t the Elf move magically by itself?  Does that mean every night along with putting kids to bed, getting ready for the next morning, turning the lights off, setting the alarm, I have to remember to move the damn thing?

Ugh.

5. It’s another lie I’ll have to explain later

Another problem I have?  I already have to explain to them – one day – why I went along with the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny and fess up to the fact that Santa isn’t real.  Do I really need to add yet another explanation to the mix?

It’s bad enough that they’ll probably burst into tears when they find out about Santa… I’ve been holding my breath this year fearing that my 7 year old will hear the truth from some bigger kids.  Oh the mom guilt!

So Elf in a Shelf, although I may have been tempted by all the photos on Facebook, and I was “this” close to adopting you into our family for a split second, I came to my senses and realized  — HELLZ NO!

There is a popular saying among cyclist and runners: “May the wind always be at your back.”

It is our hope as we strap on our bike helmet and tie up those running shoes that the weather will be kind to us.  Of course, the wind can’t always be at your back, unless you plan to ride endlessly in one direction, eventually you have to turn around and face the wind.

My Friend in Fitness and I are now in week five of our Winter Workout and we can tell you, the wind has NOT always been at our backs!  We believe we have met our outdoor fitness challenge and faced it, head down, head first and directly into the wind!

Each week we ride in the trails for some very good reasons; it is beautiful in there no matter what the season, it makes the ride go by so fast as there is so much to look at, and it shelters us from wind, rain and even sun in hot weather.  However, there is a good 15 minute bike ride we must endure to get to the trails we love.  These 15 minutes are usually the hardest on the way home with the winds usually working against our tired legs. Exercising outside in winter doesn’t come without challenges!

winter workout, outdoor fitness, exercising in the winter, biking in the winter

On week three, we set out for our ride.  I had checked the weather forecast and the 35km/h winds reported were not encouraging but we were quite used to 25km/h winds on this stretch of road so how bad could 35km be?  Besides the winds were against us on the way home usually, we would worry about it then.

Well, Mother Nature had a test for us it seems! That was some wind.  And it was against us for the first 15 minutes of the ride TO the trails this time.  We were in for a challenge right out of the driveway!

But you know what?  We did it.  It took us a little longer, we needed a couple of breaks, our hands were freezing, our noses running but, we made it to the trails.  We had a beautiful wind free ride in the forest and when it was time to ride home, we had a little riding party!  Those same winds that tested our determination on the way to the trails, easily pushed us home as we congratulated ourselves on a ride well done!

We take each week as it comes, and so far the weather has been very kind to us.  It is December now and we have yet to see real snow.  We have yet to face temperatures below -2.    We have had only one rainy day and because it rained nonstop for 36 hours, there was no way we could safely ride our bikes outside that day.  We made the decision to go to my gym and spent 60 minutes on three different cardio machines to make sure we kept our heart rates up and fulfilled our goal to work out twice a week together.

So five weeks in to our Winter Workout we are feeling fortunate the snow has not yet fallen, and feeling confident that together we can handle anything the weather may have in store for us!

Stay tuned for the next part in our Series of Winter Workouts!

Catch up on our first part, working out with friends!

Good moms want the best for their children.  We make sure they eat nutritious food, get a good education, and wear clothing that is stylish and protective from the elements.  With so much recent discussion about the safety of certain children’s products, many moms are feeling a bit confused.

Here is a brief explanation as to why children require specialized products.  I hope you find it useful when determining which products to use on your precious little ones.

Hair Type

Like every other part of the human body, hair has different stages of development spanning from birth to death.  Children’s hair differs from adults in texture, density, body, and color.  Infant hair is soft and downy.  In the first few months of life, this fluffy hair gradually falls out and is replaced with fuller follicles that often grow in a pattern.

As babies become children, their hair often darkens as more pigment is produced.  Children’s hair traits change over time as they physically develop and age, though it is typically very fine until they reach ages 7-10 years old.

Delicate Skin

Sebum is a waxy ester that keeps skin moist and provides a protective coating to hair strands.  During childhood this process is subdued as a result of lower hormone levels.  Sebum production increases during puberty, building up every two to three days for the average adult.  Build-up is often the cause of oily hair, which can be resolved by simply washing it away.

Children do not require daily washing because sebum is not at peak production.  Daily washing, however, won’t hurt anything as believed by some.  It is important to be very gentle when washing children’s hair, as the soft spot can be delicate until the age of five.

Chemical Exposure

Today, 1 in 3 American children has allergies, asthma, ADHD or autism.  Children’s bodies grow and develop more rapidly than adult’s so harmful chemicals can do the most damage at this critical time.  Biological immaturity impairs a child’s ability to detoxify and excrete toxins, making them far more vulnerable to dangerous ingredients than adults.

Marketing claims can be quite misleading.  Children’s personal care products and their labels often possess blatant contradictions.  Despite declarations of being “pure” and/or “gentle” the Environmental Working Group suggested that 57% of the top selling baby soaps were contaminated with 1,4-dioxane.

A separate study conducted by the Campaign For Safe Cosmetics suggested that 82% of the top selling children’s products contained formaldehyde.  While both of these toxic ingredients are exempt from American labeling laws, chemicals of equal concern can easily be recognized if consumers know what to look for.

Recently Johnson & Johnson made headlines because it is still using the formaldehyde-releasing ingredient in Johnson’s Baby Shampoo in the United States, Canada and China, while making formaldehyde-free versions of the shampoo in several other countries.

Research well before choosing the right bath products for your kids.

‘Tis the season again! Last year I made a not so Christmas Christmas movies list, but this year I am really feeling the merry spirit of the holidays, so this time I’m making a list that’s a little closer to the heart.

Tradition starts early, especially when it comes to the holidays, and for me and mine we watched the same handful of Christmas movies each and every year as do most families (we ended up watching them so many times that we forever ruined the VHS tapes they were on).

So, without further ado, here are my Top 10 Classic Christmas Movies of All Time:

Top 10 Classic Christmas Movies of All Time

Top 10 Classic Christmas Movies of All Time

A Muppets Christmas Carol

This is without a doubt my absolute favourite Christmas movie and has always been for as long back as I can remember Christmas. The Muppets are awesome as it is but with the addition of Michael Cane as Scrooge, a slight twist on the most classic of classic Christmas stories and some fantastic songs, this movie is the ultimate for me and my family. Not only is it amazing, but it’s a tradition.

Rudolf, the Red-Nosed Reindeer

This is up there with A Muppets Christmas Carol for favourites. The misfit toys, dentist elf and Yukon Cornelius will always have a special place in my heart. It’s funny, it’s scary at times, it’s filled with life lessons and the songs are so good that you are guaranteed to be singing them around the house after while nibbling on some shortbread snowmen.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas!

Not the Jim Carey one, the classic animated movie is far superior and is one of my mom’s favourites (which means a lot; she is the coolest lady I know). It’s funny, it’s cute, it’s interesting and when the Grinch lifts the sledge in the air when his heart grows you can’t help but smile a big ole’ smile.

A Christmas Carol

Not only do I think that this is the ultimate of ultimate Christmas stories, but my dad watches this movie before bed every Christmas Eve and has since he was a little boy. So this, for us, is the golden egg of our Christmas Traditional movies. There are so many re-makes of this film but the one we usually watch is also known as Scrooge (1951) and stars Alastair Sim.

Santa Claus is Coming to Town

This made for TV movie was next in line after Rudolf and was one of my brothers’ favourites. It’s a little darker than some of the other movies on this list but it’s still an amazing family Christmas movie. Fred Astaire narrates this tale about the origins of Santa Claus, so not only is it a tradition, but it’s educational too. Win.

top 15 classic christmas movies

Home Alone

This is still the coolest non-animated Christmas movie. Everyone loves this movie, and rightfully so. The scenes are insanely creative, original and hilarious. I like watching this movie year-round but on Christmas, it’s even more magical. I want to watch it again right now! Seriously. So good.

top 15 christmas movies of all time

Frosty the Snowman

I think this was after Santa Claus Is Coming to Town on our recorded from TV ultimate Christmas VHS tape. I liked this one a lot but I’m not sure other people did but we always watched it together regardless and therefore it makes it on this list.

top 15 traditional christmas movies

A Garfield Christmas

Now, I’m definitely not a Garfield fan and wasn’t when I was a kid either but for some reason, we all gathered around when this movie was on and we found ourselves watching it every year. It was nestled in there with Frosty and Rudolf so I have fond memories of watching it once every year.

15 best christmas movies, classic christmas movies of all time

A Charlie Brown Christmas

Everyone knows the little Christmas tree from this film, it’s iconic. I grew up with the Peanuts and I adored Snoopy as a kid so this movie always found its’ way onto our television. The soundtrack to this movie is also one of the best soundtracks ever!

best christmas movies of all time

The Little Drummer Boy

This is another of my mom’s favourite Christmas movies and her favourite Christmas song. It’s darker than most holiday films but it is a really good story. Also, seeing how Christmas is about Christ, this is an easy addition to our traditional Christmas movie feast. best christmas classic movies

Editor’s Picks

Miracle on 34th Street

This is a touching movie about a little girl tries to save a nice old man who claims to be Santa Claus from being institutionalized as insane.  You will be rooting for Kris Kringle too.

White Christmas

Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye head up this Christmas classic with Irving Berlin’s amazing score.

It’s a Wonderful Life

No holiday season would be complete without watching this classic starring James Stewart.  No matter how many times you’ve seen Stewart discover what life would be like if he had never been born, It’s a Wonderful Life is a must-watch every year.

top traditional movies of all time

Elf

Starring Will Ferrell as the Elf, this movie has quickly become a Christmas Classic. Directed by Jon Favreau and also starring James Caan and Bob Newhart. After inadvertently wreaking havoc on the elf community due to his ungainly size, a man raised as an elf at the North Pole is sent to the U.S. in search of his true identity.
 Classic Christmas Movies

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

As the holidays approach, Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) wants to have a perfect family Christmas, so he pesters his wife, Ellen (Beverly D’Angelo), and children, as he tries to make sure everything is in line, including the tree and house decorations. However, things go awry quickly. His hick cousin, Eddie (Randy Quaid), and his family show up unplanned and start living in their camper on the Griswold property. Even worse, Clark’s employers renege on the holiday bonus he needs.

The Life and Times of Fluffy, Deceased by Julie Green

I’m knee-deep in a moral quandary. I’m talking full-blown existential crisis, here. All the big capital Q questions are being asked behind closed doors.

You see, our family pet has just died.

Or rather, the beloved part-spaniel, part je ne sais quoi that — having been abandoned in the dead of winter 13-odd years ago — camped out in my parents’ garage until they took pity on the pitiful pooch and took her in.

Fluffy* led a full, squirrel-chasing life. But old age had worked a number on her. She was epileptic, practically blind and in her last days, wheezy. She’s in a better place now. As grownups we can accept that.

Of course my parents were devastated. After all, she held the fort while their ‘other daughter’ ran off to university all those years ago. She kept the nest warm, so to speak.

The loss is still raw. But it’s not them I’m worried about. It’s my son. He’s nearly three. And he doesn’t yet know about Fluffy.

We are due to stay with my parents soon. Needless to say, my son’s revved up about the visit, especially about seeing Fluffy.

On one hand he’s too young to grasp death and all its grim hallows. On the other, I know I’ll have to feed him some explanation as to why Fluffy isn’t around and won’t be coming back any time soon, lest he harp on about her absence in front of my grief-stricken parents.

It’s times like these when faith would come in handy. If I were religiously inclined, I could wax lyrical about heaven and all the angels and saints, thus spreading a Band-Aid over the harsh reality. Although part of me wishes I could do that for my son, I know I can’t spin what to me feels like a fairy tale.

By the same token, the six-feet-under, worm-laden alternative is simply too grim a picture to paint for a preschooler. So what’s a mom to do? Distract him and hope that in time he’ll forget about little Fluffy? That might work with some kids, but not my son, who already has the memory of an elephant.

I remember my first pet. The morning I found Murphy, a blue budgie, ‘sleeping’ at the bottom of his cage. We buried him in an Avon box in the backyard. Looking back, that was an important ritual. Kids need closure. Without it, death never really hits home. And without feeling its impact, no real healing can occur.

My parents couldn’t bear to bring back Fluffy’s body. But trinkets, photographs… These could be placed in a special keepsake box as a way of honouring the lost pet.

When confronting youngsters, experts advise to keep it simple, while still adhering to the facts.

Fluffy is gone. No, Fluffy isn’t coming back.

When dogs get really old, they fall asleep and don’t ever wake up again. It’s called dead, honey, and it happens to people, too.

Of course it’s okay for us to miss her. But that’s why we need to make sure to have lots of fun when it’s our turn to be alive. Just like Fluffy did.

Our weekend routine consists of a bit of hockey and a lot of Tim Hortons coffee.

Saturday, I stopped into our local Timmy’s just down the street from my house.  I had heard about Tim’s new coffees recently and tried a few of them and enjoyed them.

tim hortons

The caramel latte looked like a fabulous choice as I noticed on their outdoor signage but I needed a regular coffee first!

tim hortons caramel latte

I usually order my coffee with one milk and one sweetener (in moderation).  But I never really asked before what kind of sweetener they automatically use when I order… I wondered what kind of sweeteners they provide at Tim Hortons?

As I looked around the shop, I also realized that there isn’t a section for extra milk, sugar and sweetener in the shop either – something so obvious but I guess I never really paid much attention before.

So what kind of sweetener are they using behind the counter?

tim hortons counter

I asked the cashier who took my order what kind of sweetener she’d be using in my coffee. She replied there was only one option and it wasn’t Equal.  I asked if they offered an alternative to which she didn’t know and so called her supervisor, Lorna, to assist me.

Lorna advised that store is only sent one kind of sweetener and it was not Equal.  I asked whether they could supply an alternative like Equal, and asked if I could fill out a comment card.  Lorna looked but couldn’t find any cards on hand, but when I asked if there was an online comment form I could use, she confirmed that there was.

tim hortons comments

I use sweetener on occasion – not regularly.  As with all sugars and sugar substitutes, everything in moderation is best.  My father-in-law uses sweetener most of the time because he is diabetic.

I think it would be nice to have a few sugar substitute options at Tim Hortons – as well as lactose-free milk as an option, since I’m lactose intolerant and also prefer low fat options.

When I got home, I filled out the form, asking if they could provide Equal and lactose-free milk.  As well, I thought it would be great if they had a condiment section with extra supplies of sugar, sweetener, milk, napkins, etc.

Ahhh coffee break!  I enjoyed my coffee along with my cheese tea biscuit as watched the kids as they lounged around on a lazy day.
