What is this world coming to?

Yesterday was just a day of tragic news… where do I begin?

With the woman whose two children were stabbed and killed by their nanny?

Or the 14-year-old girl who jumped in front of a subway because she was bullied?

Or the NY cop who plotted to kidnap 100 women and cook them?

I don’t know which story disturbs me more. Why do these tragic events have to happen?

After picking up her 3-year-old daughter, Nessie, Marina Krim came home to disover her two other children, Lulul, 6, and Leo, 2,laying in a bathtub. They were fatally stabbed by their 50-year-old nanny who stabbed herself in the throat.  The mother had just posted photos of her kids on her blog.

Felicia Garcia, 15, jumped in front of a subway just moments after a group of classmates, described by witnesses as members of the football team, were bullying her. Why did the Staten Island girl have to end her own life?

NYPD officer Gilberto Valle III plotted to kidnap and cook as many as 100 women, including his girlfriend. Yes – cook. What’s more disturbing is that he and his estranged wife just ha d a baby last year. Thank God the FBI was onto him and arrested him before anything tragic could actually happen.

I don’t want my children to live in this kind of world.

I want to protect them from people who can hurt them.

I want to take them to a remote place and live our lives blissfully in ignorance.

All pregnant women should be vaccinated against pertussis, also known as whooping cough, a U.S. government panel advises.

Pertussis is a highly contagious bacterial disease that attacks the respiratory system. Pregnant women should receive the in their last trimester. Getting vaccinated during pregnancy means a mother can pass immunity to whooping cough to her baby and the shot would protect newborns from it.

So far, more than 32,000 cases have been reported and 16 people have died, most of them infants from whooping cough, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Of the infants who get pertussis, 30 to 40 percent get it from their mothers and more than half need to be hospitalized. According to the CDC, of those babies hospitalized, one in five gets pneumonia and one in 100 dies.

Since infants can only start getting the pertussis vaccine at two months of age, mothers need to have immunity passed to them by their mothers.

Dr. Marc Siegel, an associate professor of medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City, said the vaccine is safe during pregnancy. He also said that immunity is also passed to the infant through breast milk, a process called passive immunity.

These airy cookies are the perfect match to a cup of hot chocolate or coffee. Their texture is tender and muffin-like.

For a crispier exterior, use all brown sugar and bake a few minutes longer. For a super-fluffy crumb, use pumpkin puree without reducing.

Ingredients

2 ½ cups (625 mL) flour
1 tsp (5 mL) baking soda
½ tsp (2 mL) salt
1 tsp (5 mL) nutmeg
1 tsp  (5 mL) cinnamon or 2 tsp (10 mL) pumpkin pie spice
½ cup (125 mL) butter
½ cup (125 mL) almond butter
1 cup (250 mL) sugar
½ cup (125 mL) brown sugar
1 egg
1 cup (250 mL) reduced pumpkin puree or pumpkin butter*
1 tsp (5 mL) vanilla
½ cup (125 mL) diced almonds, toasted
1 cup (250 mL) chocolate chips

Directions

In a medium bowl, mix together flour, baking soda, salt and spices and set aside.

In the large bowl of an electric mixer, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add egg, pumpkin and vanilla and mix until just combined. On medium-low speed, add flour mixture until fully incorporated. Remove bowl from mixer and stir in almonds and chocolate chips.

Drop by teaspoonfuls onto a greased or lined cookie sheet and flatten slightly with the back of a spatula. Bake at 350˚F (180°C) degrees for 15 minutes or until lightly browned. Transfer cookies to a wire rack to cool completely. Makes six dozen cookies.

*Reduce pumpkin puree in a pan over medium heat, stirring frequently, for at least an hour, until colour becomes a deep brown. Packaged pumpkin butter may contain additional sweeteners and flavours, so adjust recipe to taste.

It’s almost Halloween time! What costumes are popular this year?

Here are the best Halloween costumes of 2012:

1. Vampire or Werewolf

With The final Twilight movie, Breaking Dawn 2, coming out in November, you can’t go wrong with dressing up as a vampire or werewolf.

2. Pregnant Snookie or Snookie’s baby

I admit, I dressed up as a pregnant, drunk Snookie at a blogging conference (BlissDom Canada) and the easy costume was a hit!  Just throw on a mini skirt, stuff your shirt if you’re not naturally large-breasted and use a small pillow for your “baby”.  Make sure you poof  your hair up (if you have thick hair, you won’t need a bump-it), use a wine glass as an accessory and viola!

3. PSY

PSY is hot hot hot! Dress up Gangnam Style.

4. Mitt Romney

This mask says it all.

5. Batwoman or Black Widow

With the Avengers movie such a hit this year, dress up as an Avengers character – Batwoman or Black Widow of course!

6. Honey Boo Boo

Who is Honey Boo Boo? Everyone was asking that question when the show first came out on TLC. Sadly everyone knows who she is now. Honey Boo Boo is a popular choice this year since the lil’ darlin’ hit the small screen.

Ben Affleck’s newest film, Argo has received attention of not only the critics, but also audiences around the globe as he dives into another film dealing with secret law/government policies.

While Affleck’s first film was about child abduction (Gone, Baby, Gone) and the second about the criminal underworld (The Town), Argo is about a secret CIA mission that took place during the Carter Administration with Iran and its then-president, that held several members of US Assembly to hide in the Canadian prime minister’s home. The mission was simple – Affleck (Tony Mendez) is forced to get hostages out of the country by posing them as fake film crew working on a fake Canadian science fiction film.

It’s as amazing as it sounds crazy! However this was a real event in American and Canadian history. Argo is a masterfully made film just like a fine wine, its not the maker who necessarily shines, the culmination of all the pieces like the right oak barrel, the right amount of time spent in them, the right location and time when the grapes where picked.

Produced by Ben Affleck, as well as George Clooney and his long time producing partner Grant Heslov, Argo has a fantastic cast which any filmmaker would be proud to have.  Bryan Cranston performs as Ben Affleck’s CIA boss. Affleck could have typecast the role and hired Ed Harris to play the role but Cranston gave the role some sensitivity that lacks often in many US undercover government films, helping you root for the US instead of rolling your eyes at the Pro-US themes.

Alan Arkin and John Goodman, who plays the legendary make-up artist John Chambers, are cast as the Hollywood players who pose for the fake production company. They both are like the ragtag members of the Ocean’s Eleven team. Arkin is a foul mouth semi-retired Hollywood player bringing back his grandpa role from Little Miss Sunshine.

The story is extremely well crafted that you may know what is going to happen but the material itself is presented with such tension built often you stay at the edge of your seat the whole time. Affleck doesn’t force his direction onto the film; it’s more of a guiding hand to the whole film and the story than trying to control every aspect, which is quite refreshing from often most directors’ personal opinion overtaking the story.

Argo is without a doubt Ben Affleck’s best film to date both in front and behind the camera, as well as my vote for best picture of the year.

P.S. Thanks Canada for the help!

Before I write anything else, let’s just say my husband is a HUGE football fan.

So when I had the chance to attend a Toronto Argo game with Old Navy Canada and their Super Fan Nation, we were thrilled!

Old Navy recently started selling officially licensed CFL, NHL, MLB and college product in store. There are licensed tees for the entire family from baby to men and women.

My family and I were sporting fantastic T’s to show our Argo Love!

This was the first Argos game for the girls… and their first taste of street meat! Can you feel the excitement?

We were early – just catching the team’s warm-up!
My little super fan!

This was a big game. Toronto hosting Montreal. Some great rivalry here!

The game was so exciting. It was a great chance for us to do something as a family. It was also great for my husband to share his love of football with our girls!

Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green welcomed a baby boy!

Well, the couple actually welcomed him last month but news is only breaking out now, according to E! News.

Megan Fox wrote on her Facebook page:

We have been very lucky to have had a peaceful few weeks at home, but I would like to release this myself before others do. I gave birth to our son Noah Shannon Green on September 27th. He is healthy, happy, and perfect.

We are humbled to have the opportunity to call ourselves the parents of this beautiful soul and I am forever grateful to God for allowing me to know this kind of boundless, immaculate love.

Thanks to those of you who wish to send your positive energy and well wishes. May God bless you and your families abundantly.

Not surprising considering that both Fox and Green were very private about their Fox’s pregnancy. Only when Fox’s baby bump was noticeable did they reveal the news – well, paparazzi snapped photos of them.

The actress, 26, and Green, 39, were married in June 2010. This is Fox’s first child; Green of 90120 fame also has a 10-year-old son, Kassius, from a previous relationship.

Going to a blogging conference? Or any conference for that matter?

I wrote a post about six tips to remember at blogging conferences. But here are some simple Dos and Don’ts to remember when attending a blogging conference:

Do introduce others – always nice to be polite.

Don’t dominate the conversation. Allow for others to get a word in.

Do excuse yourself politely if you must leave a conversation.

Don’t drink and tweet.

Don’t drink and post provocative pictures.

Do photo bomb when hilariously appropriate.

<Photo

Don’t post pictures of unsuspecting friends on Facebook if they are in a compromising situation.

Don’t wear inappropriate clothing. If you think it’s not appropriate dress code, you’re probably right.

Do attend the sessions that you think you may not find interesting – you may be pleasantly surprised!

Don’t stalk a fellow blogger. Especially follow them around. To their hotel room.

Don’t take a photo of people while they’re eating.

Photo

Do try to get out of your comfort zone.

Don’t snore (if you can control it) in the hotel room with your roomie.

Do have fun!

Add your tips below!

You’re going to a conference and you’re nervous – aren’t you? How do I talk to people? What do I wear?!

Oh the joys of social anxiety!  I’m neither an extrovert nor an introvert – I’m both depending on my mood and the day, to be completely honest. Some days I’m workin’ a room, chatting it up with everyone. Other days, I’m a little more subdued and shy.

But I’m mentally preparing myself for the whirlwind that is to come during conference season in Toronto.

Here are six tips to remember when attending conferences:

1. Don’t be afraid to say hello!

Introduce yourself to people – remember, you’re all there for the same reason. You’re all there to meet, connect and network so don’t be shy to start up a conversation. Don’t know where to start?

Just go up to someone and say, “hi I’m so and so.” Don’t forget to tell them your Twitter handle! Many people I know I recognize by their Twitter name before I recognize their face or their name. So for example, I will say: “Hi, I’m Maria aka amotherworld on Twitter.” Exchange in some small talk, exchange business cards and boom!

If you’re super nervous about meeting a speaker or brand, do the same thing – say hi, great talk or love your product and exchange cards.

2. Pack well.

Make sure you have extra space if you decide to go shopping and bring home swag. Bring comfortable clothing! You may not want to spend all day in high heels so bring a pair of comfortable but stylish flats or riding boots. Leave the stilettos for after hours.

3. Mingle!

Try not to stay in the corner with your friends – get out there and mingle with new people. Although you want to spend time with your peeps, this is the time to meet new people and make new contacts.

4. Take Notes

Whether you’re bringing your phone, tablet, laptop or a pen and paper, take notes. There will surely be an overload of information that you won’t be able to remember. If you do bring a laptop, remember that it is heavy to lug around so a tablet or even a notebook might be a better bet. You can always leave your laptop in your hotel room.

5. Tweet away

People who aren’t able to attend love to read all about the conference sessions via social media. It’s also great to go back and re-read tweets later on when using the appropriate hashtag on Twitter. Follow the hashtag throughout the conference and connect with people after the session by tweeting them.

6. Follow up

Pick up those business cards! It’s always fun post-conference to go through your bags and business cards. Follow up with those you met, even just a “hello, nice to meet you” email will suffice.

Snot, poo, spit-up – do you share it all – I mean all the disgusting, gross details – about your kids on Facebook, Twitter and any other social media site? Or do you go on and on about your kids on Twitter?

Well blogger Blair Koenig thinks it’s over the top when parents share too much on social media sites and writes about it freely with a hint of snark on her blog called, “STFU, Parents”.

STFU, Parents was ‘born’ in 2009 to “serve as a guide for parents on what NOT to post about their kids as well as a forum for non-parents to vent about their TMI-related frustrations.”

Her tagline?

“You used to be fun. Now you have a baby.”

Ok I agree some people truly over-share about their children and should probably keep certain things private. But her blog seems to come down quite hard on parents. One popular baby site says her blog is “mom-bashing.”

She pokes fun at parents who are guilty of “oversharenting” on social media sites – we all do sometimes, right? I mean, many moms are at home, raising babies and feeling quite isolated – much time is spent on social media sites getting support from online friends.

But do some of us share too much information? Maybe some people do need a lesson in social media “etiquette”?

Koenig accepts submissions from people who have interesting news feeds in their social media and will post them on her STFU blog:

“If you’re being driven crazy by your friends’ baby updates, please feel free to contribute to this blog.”

Oh, did I mention Koenig doesn’t have kids?

All I can say to Ms. Blair Koenig is this – talk to me if/when you have kids.

That is all.

The icing on the cake is that Koenig is coming out with her own book. Yes, she’s the author of the forthcoming book called STFU, Parents: The Jaw-Dropping, Self-Indulgent, and Occasionally Rage-Inducing World of Parent Overshare.

Now why didn’t I think of that?

Do you share too much on social media? Do you think some parents share too much about their kids?

Here is a post I wrote recently about Blogging About Our Kids: How Much Do You Share?
