Before we know it, September will be upon us and kids will be going back to school! While I love the summer, there is something about the back-to-school season that always gets me excited – even though I’m an adult! But now, that anticipation is for my own kids: new teachers and classes, reuniting with friends, and getting back into a normal routine.

Part of that excitement stems from getting organized for a new school year. We love back-to-school shopping, and cracking open a new notebook, sharpening brand new pencils, and choosing a new outfit for the first day.

Before I begin shopping, I like to take inventory first to see what we already have. I’ll rummage through kids’ closets and storage bins to see what clothing still fits, and what’s been outgrown. Together, my kids and I will check school supplies and see whether backpacks, pencil cases, lunch bags and binders have managed to hold up over the course of the previous year. Then, we’ll make a list (I love lists) and then check out the deals online first.

The frugal shopper that I am means I love finding ways to save money and earn travel miles. As an Aeroplan member and wanderluster, I’m constantly searching for ways to earn miles on my purchases so that I can book that next vacation faster. With over 170 retailers to choose from on the Aeroplan eStore, it’s easy to earn miles.

Just in time for back-to-school season, Aeroplan Members will be able to earn up to 7X the miles when they shop at select retailers during the Back to School event via the Aeroplan eStore between August 5-18th.

Back-to-school time is always an exciting time of the year. Much like a new calendar year, the start of a new school year brings new goals and plans.

Soon enough, back-to-school shopping will be in full swing. As a child, I would be excited to get ready for the first day of school; and now as a parent of two, it’s even more exciting. New school supplies, new clothes, a new outfit for the first day… and the excitement of a new teacher and seeing friends again.

But before I begin shopping, I take inventory first to see what the kids need. I rummage through kids’ closets first to see what still fits, and what’s been outgrown. I also check school supplies and make note of whether last year’s binders, pencil cases and backpacks have managed to hold up over the course of the previous year.

My list for places to travel in 2016 didn’t turn out as I had hoped originally. But in a pleasant turn of events, I ended up travelling to several Canadian destinations.

Last year we explored Ontario, traveling to Southwest Ontario and the beautiful Blue Flag beaches of Sarnia and Grand Bend. We also visited Mont Tremblant and Quebec City, ending the year with a trip to Vancouver.

I think 2017 will also be a year for travel in Canada. I’ve never visited Nova Scotia or Newfoundland and would love to take a trip to the east coast again. One of my goals is to visit every province and territory in Canada.

Where do you want to travel in 2017?

Are you planning to travel in 2017? Last year, travelers visited Brazil for the Olympics, and Americans flocked to Cuba for the first time. But in 2017, other countries will enjoy the spotlight.

While some are staying close to home for various reasons including the fear of traveling to certain countries, other destinations are coming into the spotlight including these 10 amazing places.

Now, there is no better place to travel than right here in our own marvelous country.  Lonely Planet has named Canada the top country to visit in 2017.

Canada is celebrating 150 years this year, and there will be celebrations all year and all around the country. More than 200 national parks and historic sites are offering free admission throughout the year. The capital of Ottawa will be hosting a full year of celebrations, and Montreal is also marking its 375th anniversary. The only issue you’ll face is deciding where to visit first – British Columbia, Prince Edward Island, or Quebec?

Want to travel but not sure where to start?

Aeroplan is encouraging members to share their ultimate travel goals. Where will you use your Aeroplan miles? Members can input up to three goals (two travel and one merchandise), and then this information will help Aeroplan will create a more personalized experience with targeted opportunities for you.

Interested in sharing your Aeroplan goals? Visit Aeroplan.com/goals and tell Aeroplan how you’d like to use your miles!

Charitable Pooling

Know of an organization or person who needs specific help in your community? Aeroplan’s Charitable Pooling Program supports individuals and organizations at the local level. Using a pool of donated Aeroplan Miles, the charity may redeem within the Aeroplan Program, for example, for travel, car rental, hotel stays and merchandise.

In some cases, community members may use this pooling option to help an individual in dire need of assistance for medical purposes or a family emergency. An account is established in the name of the charity, which enables them to pool donated Aeroplan Miles at no cost. To donate, please visit: aeroplan.com/donate.

Give Back with Aeroplan Beyond Miles Program

Just this weekend, Aeroplan’s program reached a huge milestone; Aeroplan Members have now donated more than 500 million Miles to the Beyond Miles program since its launch in 2006!  In 2015, Aeroplan donated 1 million miles to each of its partner organizations.

Aeroplan’s Beyond Miles program and other community investment initiatives can found on Twitter.  For more information, visit beyondmiles.aeroplan.com. Here are more ways you can give back this holiday season.

Looking back at this past year, I feel like I have travelled more than I have in my entire life. While I’m staying grounded for the next few months thanks to my kids’ insane hockey schedules, I’m already thinking about our next trip(s) for next year (fingers crossed). But how to plan our vacation faster?

While we enjoy visiting Florida every spring, I’m tempted to try a new destination this year… even more tempted to take another trip to Europe. I’m also thinking about scooping my husband away for a long weekend getaway to the Caribbean, sans children. It would be the first time we’ve ever taken a trip without our kids – long overdue?!

Why don’t families or couples take vacations more frequently? For many, they simply can’t afford it – and some families think they can’t. The biggest expense for a family of four is the airline tickets.

Plan Your Next Vacation With Aeroplan Miles

BUT if collecting Aeroplan® miles helps to pay for those tickets, why wouldn’t you? It’s a no-brainer! Plan your next vacation with miles and you’ll be sipping margaritas in no time!

All you have to do is carry your Aeroplan® card to earn miles on your everyday purchases. Plus, you can earn miles twice when you pay with an Aeroplan®-affiliated credit card.

Where can you use your Aeroplan® card to earn miles faster for your next trip?

Costco

I don’t know about you, but every time I shop at Costco, I’m not walking out of there without spending $200. So if you earn 1 mile per $1 spent online at Costco.ca on select products, those miles add up! If you don’t have a Costco card, sign up for a new Costco Membership and register your account with Aeroplan.

SHOP.CA

While I do enjoy shopping in retail stores because I enjoy seeing products in person, I also like to shop after hours from the comfort of my couch. Aeroplan® Members can earn 1 mile per $1 spent year-round at SHOP.CA. Plus, earn 800 bonus miles on your first purchase of $99 or more.

Plan Your Next Vacation With Miles

ESSO

When it’s time to fill up, why not earn even more points by filling up at Esso. You can earn up to 3 Aeroplan® Miles for every $3 you spend at Esso stations – the higher the grade of gas, the more miles.

Volvo

Ok, if you’re in the market for anew vehicle and Volvo happens to be your choice, you can earn Aeroplan®miles through your entire auto journey. Earn 25,000 miles or more with the purchase or lease of a new Volvo and continue to earn miles throughout the life of your car! Here’s how else you can earn:

  • Test drive any new vehicle—earn 250 miles
  • After-sales service—1 mile per $1 spent
  • Parts and accessories—1 miles per $1 spent

Simply present your Aeroplan® Card when you visit your Volvo dealership. Earn a minimum of 25,000 miles with the purchase or lease of a new Volvo and continue to earn throughout its life cycle.

Aeroplan’s eStore

If you don’t shop with any of these brands, check out Aeroplan’s eStore which features over 100 retailers such as Apple Store Canada, Indigo.ca, Dell.ca, and Sears.ca from 10 different product categories including accessories, apparel, gift cards and more.  Members can shop online and earn at least 1 Aeroplan® Mile for every $1 that they spend and double that if they pay with one of the Aeroplan® affiliated financial cards.  Visit www.aeroplan.com/eStore for more details.
