Remembrance Day Poems

Remembrance Day

We wear a poppy

On Remembrance Day,

And at eleven

We stand and pray.

Wreaths are put

Upon a grave.

As we remember

Our soldiers brave.

Little Poppy

Little poppy

Given to me,

Help me keep Canada

Safe and free.

I’ll wear a little poppy,

As red as red can be,

To show that I remember

Those who fought for me.

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved, and were loved, and now we lie

In Flanders Fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

In Flanders Fields.

~ John McCrae

For the Fallen

With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,

England mourns for her dead across the sea.

Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,

Fallen in the cause of the free.

Solemn the drums thrill; Death august and royal

Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres, remembrance day poems

There is music in the midst of desolation

And a glory that shines upon our tears.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,

Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.

They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted;

They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old:

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning

We will remember them.

They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;

They sit no more at familiar tables of home;

They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;

They sleep beyond England’s foam.

But where our desires are and our hopes profound,

Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,

To the innermost heart of their own land they are known

As the stars are known to the Night;

As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,

Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain;

As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,

To the end, to the end, they remain.

~ Laurence Binyon

High Flight

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth

And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth

Of sun-split clouds – and done a hundred things

You have not dreamed of – wheeled and soared and swung

High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,

I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung

My eager craft through footless halls of air…

Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue

I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace

Where never lark, or even eagle flew –

And, while with silent lifting mind I’ve trod

The high untrespassed sanctity of space,

Put out my hand and touched the face of God.

~  Officer John G. Magee, Jr.

Why Wear a Poppy

“Please wear a poppy,” the lady said,

And held one forth, but I shook my head.

Then I stopped and watched as she offered them there,

And her face was old and lined with care;

But beneath the scars the years had made

There remained a smile that refused to fade.

A boy came whistling down the street,

Bouncing along on care-free feet.

His smile was full of joy and fun,

“Lady,” said he, “may I have one?”

When she’d pinned it on, he turned to say;

“Why do we wear a poppy today?”

The lady smiled in her wistful way

And answered; “This is Remembrance Day.

And the poppy there is a symbol for

The gallant men who died in war.

And because they did, you and I are free –

That’s why we wear a poppy, you see.

I had a boy about your size,

With golden hair and big blue eyes.

He loved to play and jump and shout,

Free as a bird, he would race about.

As the years went by, he learned and grew,

And became a man – as you will, too.

He was fine and strong, with a boyish smile,

But he’d seemed with us such a little while

When war broke out and he went away.

I still remember his face that day.

When he smiled at me and said, ‘Goodbye,

I’ll be back soon, Mum, please don’t cry.’

But the war went on and he had to stay,

And all I could do was wait and pray.

His letters told of the awful fight

(I can see it still in my dreams at night),

With the tanks and guns and cruel barbed wire,

And the mines and bullets, the bombs and fire.

Till at last, at last, the war was won –

And that’s why we wear a poppy, son.”

The small boy turned as if to go,

Then said, “Thanks, lady, I’m glad to know.

That sure did sound like an awful fight

But your son – did he come back all right?”

A tear rolled down each faded cheek;

She shook her head, but didn’t speak

I slunk away in a sort of shame,

And if you were me, you’d have done the same:

For our thanks, in giving, if oft delayed,

Though our freedom was bought – and thousands paid!

And so, when we see a poppy worn,

Let us reflect on the burden borne

By those who gave their very all

When asked to answer their country’s call

That we at home in peace might live.

Then wear a poppy! Remember – and Give!

~  Don Crawford

Remembrance

Long ago and far away

across the ocean

wild and wide,

the young men stormed

an alien shore

where many of them died.

Here and now

old men remember

the valor and the gore,

and the boyish faces

of their youth

that are young for ever more

~ William Bedford

Poppy, Poppy, what do you say?

Wear me on Remembrance Day.

Poppy, Poppy, what do you tell?

Many soldiers in battle fell.

Poppy, Poppy, what should we know?

That peace on earth should grow, grow, grow.

Vince Vaughan is da bomb. One of my fave comedies is “Old School” which stars Vaughn along with Will Ferrell and Owen Wilson.

In his new movie “Delivery Man”, Vaughn plays underachiever David Wozniak, whose anonymous donations to a fertility clinic 20 years earlier resulted in 533 children. David must now embark on a journey that leads him to discover not only his true self but also the father that he could become.

The DreamWorks Pictures film is written and directed by Ken Scott and also stars Chris Pratt and Cobie Smulders. Based on “Starbuck,” the original screenplay was written by Ken Scott and Martin Petit.

The film will hit theatres on November 22, 2013.

The National Women’s Show was this past weekend and it was FAB! I stopped by and enjoyed perusing the various vendors, from beauty to food to travel.

I love discovering new brands and products at these types of shows, especially this one as it’s geared towards women. I ended up buying a gorgeous turquoise necklace made by a local jeweler and a bag of gluten-free biscotti – must try their other products, made right here in Toronto.

The National Women’s Show is a must for a girls’ afternoon out – you can get your hair, nails and makeup done and then go out for a night on the town!

The highlight was getting to meet Melody Thomas Scott who plays Nikki Newman on The Young and the Restless, a show I grew up watching thanks to my mom. She looks just gorgeous in person and was very sweet and gracious.

Every morning, blurry-eyed and half-asleep, I stumble downstairs and head straight for the coffee maker. I can’t function without coffee.

Before I start my day, I must begin my daily ingestion (a vat) of coffee. The smell of coffee alone perks me up – it’s such a welcoming scent first thing in the morning.

I’ve had various coffee makers over the years – single cup, traditional brew, percolator, French press, I’ve ground my own beans, combined blends… I’ve tried many ways to get the perfect cup of coffee.

I enjoy variety with my coffee too; from regular to dark roast, flavoured to espresso, I can have coffee any way, any time! So when Folgers invited me to embrace mornings by waking up with a cup of the new Mocha Swirl Folgers® Gourmet Selections® K-Cup® for the Keurig Mini Plus Brewer, I had to try.

Coffee is My Morning Friend

Of course the jingle, “the best part of waking up is Folgers in your cup” also has left an imprint on my brain!

I like that the Keurig brews one cup at a time, and guests can have their pick of flavours from the wide variety of Folgers blends.  Folgers did a survey and it revealed that 84% of Canadian coffee drinkers who have tried single serve coffee enjoy it for the convenience (38%) as well as the variety it offers (27%).

As soon as I made my first cup with the easy-brew Keurig, my 9-year-old immediately said, “Mmmm smells good in here. Is that vanilla?”

folger gourmet selections

The aroma of Mocha Swirl fills the room – it’s quite a pleasant scent. The taste is smooth, silky and chocolatey. That extra flavour truly was a lovely addition to my regular morning coffee. I didn’t know this, but one in five prefer to have a hint of sweet flavour in their coffee.

I really liked how the Keurig Mini brewed the coffee – the coffee was hot and flavourful. The worst part about brewed coffee is the bit left on the bottom – you can never really drink it and it’s just a waste. Plus after sitting there for a bit, the coffee doesn’t taste very good.

The Mocha Swirl K-Cup® coffee fills a large-sized mug, so I can enjoy without having to go for a refill in a few minutes. Also I can fill a travel-sized mug when I’m heading out for a meeting or longer drive.

I also enjoy having a mid-afternoon coffee and this is also when I really enjoy Folgers’ other flavoured blends, like the Caramel Drizzle or Vanilla Biscotti K-Cups. Creamy buttery caramel and vanilla cookie? Yum! Folgers Gourmet Selections K-Cup packs come in a variety of regular blends too, like Classic Roast, Lively Colombian Regular and Decaf, Black Silk (dark roast), Morning Café (light roast).

It’s no secret – I’m a proud hockey mom — luckily to just one child, for now!

Going to hockey games is really the highlight of our family’s weekends. There is something so special and exciting about lacing up skates, seeing your child’s name on a hockey jersey, watching the excitement on a young team’s faces.

I know how expensive it is to have your child play hockey – skates, equipment, lessons… not to mention if your kid wants to play goalie. I’m talking house league – and even more pricey (much more) if your child plays rep hockey! Participation in a rep league can cost thousands of dollars. With amazing fundraising initiatives from hockey volunteers, those costs can be lowered significantly but it’s still a huge expense, especially if you have more than one child playing.

Unfortunately some parents can’t afford the high costs of having their kids play hockey at all. According to  Statistics Canada, about 68 per cent of children from high-income families play sports as opposed to 44 per cent from low-income ones.

When I hear of organizations getting involved in helping children play sports, giving them opportunities that they wouldn’t have otherwise, it just warms my heart. Sports teach children life lessons – discipline, teamwork and leadership skills that will remain with them through adulthood. Not to mention the life-long friendships that they will create!

RBC is committing to invest $100 million over five years to help one million kids and youth. This will happen through investments in a wide range of national and community-based organizations, such as children’s mental health, after school programs and amateur sports.

Thomas’ story is so sweet and inspiring. After emigrating from England, Thomas and his family join the ever-so-popular Canadian pastime of hockey. With the help of the RBC Play Hockey program, Thomas can do more than just dream about hockey – he can really play and that he does, as goalie!

RBC says the Believe in Kids Pledge will include $25 million for new, multi-year programs to be unveiled in the next few months. To kick things off, RBC will provide $2.8 million in donations to 106 community-based after school programs across Canada through the RBC After School Project. RBC will also provide $4.6 million in charitable grants to 125 organizations across Canada through the RBC Children’s Mental Health Project.

I’m thrilled with this news, knowing that other kids who can’t afford to play hockey may now be able to fulfill that dream of hitting the ice!

As 2013 winds down, it has become evident that some wedding trends are on the rise and others are beginning to decline. Now is the time that designers are sharing their inspired visions for next year, including throwback wedding gowns, multifaceted centerpieces, modern weddings with metallic accents and rustic barn weddings with nature themes.

You’ll find design ideas for the entire wedding spectrum, from simplistic and elegant to vintage glam. Wedding designers are adding creative flair to classic color schemes and making bold statements with modern palettes. Designers are also exploring a plethora of ways to customize weddings so that each event reflects the specific couple’s personalities and quirkiness. Keep reading to learn what trends are going to flourish in the upcoming 12+ months.

Wedding Trends for 2014
1. Great Gatsby Glam Gowns

The roaring twenties are back and, inspired by Daisy Buchanan from The Great Gatsby, fashion designers including Reem Acra, Maggie Sottero, Carolina Herrara, Theia and Kenneth Pool are expressing effortless sophistication in their bridal gowns. Yes, this look first surged last year, but it’s going to continue to ride high. You’ll see statuesque column silhouettes with all-over beading made from pearls, sequins and crystals. Romantic cap sleeves, dramatic backless dresses and silvery metallic embellishments make glamorous statements. Designers are also exploring vintage inspired headpieces with and without a dramatic veil. Martha Stewart explored this stunning trend with a runway report on her website complete with 11 photos of beautifully beaded wedding dresses.

2. Eclectic Centerpiece Ensembles

Centerpiece ensembles are widely popular for 2014. Designers are experimenting arrangements of clear glass vases of different shapes and heights, including vintage vessels such as milk bottles, perfume bottles, mason jars and flea market finds. For dramatic effect and visual interest, miniature centerpieces are contrasted with tall centerpieces down the length of long harvest tables. To create tall centerpieces, designers are using candlesticks topped with full bouquets. You’ll see bouquets with various blooms, such as Zinnias, Queen Anne’s Lace and Football mums, or simplistic bouquets with a single type of flower, such as white peonies or Dendrobium Orchids. For an understated Parisian flair, designers are creating simplistic arrangements of eclectic vessels each holding a minimalistic element, such as twigs, leaves, peonies or Japanese Anemones.

3. Rustic-Modern Barn Wedding

For 2014, wedding designers are embracing the romantic and naturalistic simplicity of Barn venues. You’ll see rustic and sophisticated centerpieces made from baskets and buckets filled with flowers, such as pure white tulips, or nests of twisted fern vines hugging a group of peonies. Natural accents like wiry branches embellish tables to convey the simple marvels of the great outdoors. Designers add earthy textures with burlap and twine and create a nostalgic feel by mixing in old objects on the tables and throughout the wedding venue. Newlyweds Tara and Nick display their rustic themed wedding on the Green Wedding Shoes website. DIY projects and low-key natural colors were evident throughout the ceremony and reception.

4. Classic Wedding Colors for 2014

It seems that designers have conceived of every possible color palette imaginable for 2014, but classic color palettes continue to be popular. Designers are still in love with shades of pink, from brilliant pinks to blushes. Inspired designs include light pink wedding gowns and subtle ombre variations. Exclusive to David’s Bridal, the White by Vera Wang collection includes a stunning pink ombre ball gown finished with an antique jeweled corsage at the hip, not too dissimilar from what trendsetters Jessica Biel and Reese Witherspoon wore s they floated down the aisle. Another classic wedding theme is white-on-white, with a plethora of white flowers in every shape, size and texture framed by white vases and white runners.

5. Modern Color Palettes

For modern color palettes, designers are using bright colors and bold patterns. Instead of the subtlety of a vintage color scheme, couples and their planners are expected to embrace brazenly contrasting hues. The combination of black-and-white will rise, as will bright accent colors like purple with lime or cherry with yellow. To avoid overwhelming the senses, designers are limiting the amount of shades they use. Additionally, plan to see a lot of metallic this winter, as silver and gold ties into the glam aesthetic are “it” colors that have surged in both fashion and interior design.

6. Customized Wedding Details

Every great wedding is in the details, and today it’s easier than ever to add custom details to each wedding so that it’s unique and personalized. Some personalized elements include photo collages and creative photo displays, videos and slideshows, and monograms and screen-printing on wedding objects. Marry Me Metro wedding blog has created a Pinterest board with an endless amount of personalized ideas for couples to implement into their wedding to create a unique experience for both them and their guests.

Tell us, what wedding trends are you hoping to see more of in 2014, and which ones will you happily say adieu to?

Keep your princesses and pirates safe while they trick or treat with these Halloween safety tips

The spookiest night of the year is quickly approaching and your little ghosts, goblins and zombies will be going out trick-or-treating. Trick-or-treaters can be so excited by the fun of Halloween that they forget to follow safety rules when they’re out the door.

Safety should always come first so make sure to read these Halloween safety tips before the vampires and princesses head out to score copious amounts of candy:

1. Don’t Treat or Treat Alone

Kids should always go with an adult or a group of friends.  “Young children must be accompanied by a parent or other responsible adult. We recommend that older kids travel in groups,” says Staff Sergeant Chris Boddy from the Toronto Police Service.

2. Wear Proper Costumes

Kids should wear properly fitted costumes that are bright and non-flammable. Wigs and costumes are highly flammable; ditch the candles on the front porch or in your jack-o-lantern for glow sticks instead.

On dark coloured costumes, use reflective tape on kids’ costume or back so they can be seen in the dark. Watch out for long flowing capes or dresses as children may easily trip.

5 Halloween Safety Tips

3. Don’t Wear Masks

Use face make-up instead of a mask but test the make-up first to avoid skin irritation.  “If your child wears a mask, make sure it fits securely and has eyeholes large enough so that he or she can see through,” says Sgt. Boddy. When walking, make sure your kids push the mask up on their heads so they can see properly.

4. Watch the Road

Remind your kids to only use the sidewalks and never walk on the road. According to Safe Kids USA, children are more than twice as likely to be killed by a car while walking on Halloween than any other night of the year.

Drivers must be extra vigilant on Halloween night and drive slowly in residential areas – a child could dart out onto road at any moment. “Children may be preoccupied with the trick-or-treating and may not be paying attention to the rules of the road,” says Sgt. Boddy. “Keep vehicle speeds at or below the posted limits, and scan the road for children attempting to cross streets mid-block.”

Remind your kids to look both ways before crossing the street. Use crosswalks wherever possible. October 31st is the most dangerous night of the year for youngsters walking on American roadways according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

5. No Texting

For older kids, make sure they are not using their cell phones while trick-or-treating. “The use of electronic devices such as headphones and texting should be avoided as these result in distractions, particularly when crossing the street,” says Sgt. Boddy.
For older kids heading out with friends, plan a route close to home in advance and give them a curfew. Make sure they read these tips and more Halloween safety tips before going out on Halloween night.

Stay safe and have a Happy Halloween!

My kids and I have been seeing the trailer for Disney’s Frozen since the summer and we can’t wait to see the movie.

The big-screen comedy adventure stars fearless optimist Anna (voice of Kristen Bell) who sets off on an epic journey  to find her sister Elsa (voice of Idina Menzel), whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom of Arendelle in eternal winter.  Anna teams up with rugged mountain man Kristoff (voice of Jonathan Groff) and his loyal reindeer Sven. Encountering Everest-like conditions, mystical trolls, and a hilarious snowman named Olaf, Anna and Kristoff battle the elements in a race to save the kingdom.

The film is directed by Chris Buck (Tarzan, Surf’s Up) and Jennifer Lee (screenwriter, Wreck-It Ralph), and produced by Peter Del Vecho (Winnie the Pooh, The Princess and the Frog). The film features music from Tony® winner Robert Lopez (The Book of Mormon, Avenue Q) and Kristen Anderson-Lopez (In Transit).

Frozen hits theatres in 3D on November 27, 2013. Frozen is a Walt Disney Animation Studios film.
