The first thing that will strike you about Ashley Buchholz, one half of Ubiquitous Synergy Seeker, is his sea blue eyes, which were amplified 100 times by his turquoise blue button-down shirt.

We met at a sushi place in Markham, in Ash’s ‘hood’ where he spent much of his youth growing up. He has come full circle – he left the suburbs only to come back with a new appreciation of his roots.

I asked him to stay a while as he was hesitant to take off his puffy bomber jacket as he described as a “hug” – feeling confined gives him a sense of comfort and warmth. I was surprised that he removed his sunglasses – his trademark. “I wouldn’t leave my house without sunglasses… I didn’t want you to see how I really felt about myself.”

It wasn’t a typical interview; Ash is very open and honest about his life and music. I didn’t have to ask him many questions as the conversation moved with a natural ebb and flow.

The music that he and his partner, Jason “Human Kebab” Parsons, make together is magical and whimsical. Jason is also a DJ and turntablist. His unusual maneuvers like doing head-stands while mixing beats, are enough to make a gymnast envious.

The two together flow in an electric synergy, even though you wouldn’t know that they are like opposite charges pulled to each other by a mystical force. I describe them as Yin Yang – Ash laughs. I think he agrees.

USS released their new album, Advanced Basics, an eclectic mix of sounds and vocals, rhythms and lyrics. They are also embarking on part two of their cross-Canada tour with Hedley and Classified.

USS Advanced Basics

The dynamic duo met while working on a golf course together; Ash was a college drop-out while Jason was a university grad. Jason was the DJ at Ash’s sister’s wedding so when they were putting beer away,  the two finally met. “It would’ve sent ripples across the universe except the walls were thick steel – from the synergy of that meeting.”

Ash spent weekends in Jay’s basement with his younger siblings while Jay would spend hours in his music room. Finally they came up with their first song, Cloud Boy, which didn’t make the first album. The lyrics “Here’s my heart, please don’t let me down” weren’t about a girl – they were about Jason.

“At the time I was an extremely broken, turbulent person and Jason recognized something in me. The best anti-depressant in the world would be to get a pint of his blood.”

“He’s in the ¼ of ½ of 1 percentile of the population that has the ability to process emotions, get mad if you need to get mad but let it go, be direct, take life head on, be able to put on different hats, love life and be so excited and grateful about every little thing,” Ash days.

Meanwhile, Ash has had a tumultuous journey. He says he was stuck as the ultimate Peter Pan archetype, never wanting to grow up and be responsible. Just as the lyrics in the song Built to Break, “I don’t mean to trip, but it’s easier than dealing with it, “ Ash describes how easy it is to reach for tempting gluttonous substances to fill those addictions rather than dealing head on with mental health issues and past issues that were never resolved.

Ash has been down that road a few times, dealing with his demons of addiction – drugs, alcohol, cigarettes – and mental illness, a disease that he is open to discussing and feels he has an obligation to speak out about it

“Over the course of the last 15 months since last December 27, I have actively engaged in de-Peter Pan-ing myself. That was the day I stopped taking drugs and that’s something that I’m open about,” Ash admits.

“I don’t glorify or demonize drug use. I do want to be a good role model in life. I have a certain perspective of what I wish I could have been exposed to at an earlier age. It’s ok to grow up if you still have fun, doesn’t mean you don’t become responsible – you can be responsible and have fun.”

Altering his mindset, Ash has since fully embraced a holistic lifestyle, starting his nighttime routine at 6:00pm rather than at 6:00am. He meditates for hours, quieting his mind although it would be fascinating to jump inside and spend some time there to see how he processes his intricate thinking patterns.

Ash Buchholz

When Ash needs to recharge his “batteries”, he does yoga, acupuncture, meditation, and senior aquafit classes. That’s right. By saying yes to new experiences, Ash says it’s incredible the opportunities that present themselves when you open up to the universe.

“I’ve been on numerous meditation retreats because when I wasn’t in the psych ward I was meditating or thinking myself into depressive suicidal anxious depressions and so when I went away on these meditations and you sit with yourself without all of these stimulations, you feel this aliveness in any square micro-millimetre of your body.”

Ash is on the right path – he has reconnected with his father, who he lost touch with for most of his life. His mother is a big part of his life and will be watching from the side stage on their upcoming Toronto show at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto on March 27. They’ll then continue onto Montreal, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Calgary, Vancouver and more through until April.

Ash compares touring like Tantra. “It feels like I and the collective entity that is the audience and the performance are having passionate sex. There is that level of intimacy. It’s like my journal is on an overhead projector above me on the stage as I’m singing, and it says, ‘come on in and witness me on my most vulnerable and honest moments of my entire existence.’”

From the first bar they played in Stouffville, Ontario to playing at the Air Canada Centre, Ash feels vindicated. “It’s vindicating because I stuck with something and through thick and thin and thicker and thinner, I just knew I have a mission, duty, simple profound purpose.”

The album is called Advanced Basics because it’s a metaphor for “weaning yourself off every instant gratification and knowing that… it’s going to be real simple but it’s not going to be easy.”

Stephan Caras showcased his Fall Winter 2014 collection at World MasterCard Fashion Week in Toronto on Friday, March 21, 2014

The tents were over-packed, it was a full house of style and fashion fans, press, designer guests and industry people.

The show was beautiful in black and raspberry pink. There were plunging necklines, structured shoulders, sexy pantsuits and short shorts, cutout dresses, peplum tops and dresses with pops of a beautiful raspberry in rich fabrics.

Of course with any Stephan Caras collection, the dresses reign supreme – beautiful ball gowns with floral embellishments and elegant volume.

Caras’ clothing makes a woman look and feel sensual, feminine and simply stunning.

Although we’re happy that our long winter now officially over, we’re jumping ahead to Fall Winter 2014 fashion. I know it seems crazy but fashion shows happen six months in advance so we’re always on top on the latest and upcoming trends.

One show that I’m always excited to see is by Joe Fresh – trendy and affordable. The Joe Fresh Fall Winter 2014 collection is inspired by the great Canadian outdoors and the spirit of winter adventure.

Joe Mimran, the Creative Director of Joe Fresh was inspired by “Canada’s mountains, wilderness and outdoor elements, particularly against the backdrop of this winter’s polar vortex that we’ve all gone through together.”

No kidding! Give us some more stylish outerwear to make it through four months of brutally cold winters, Mr. Mimran.

His collection includes oversize parkas and anoraks in an array of silhouettes and proportions. I love the contrast with the collection’s slim pants and oversize funnel neck coats.

Fax fur, chunky knits and updated sweatshirts take center stage. Colours are earthy tones like olive, lichen, and my favourites – camel and caramel.

When you’re getting your photo taken, do you fix your hair first before striking a pose? Or do you just flash a smile and let the photographer snap the photo spontaneously?

I’m all for spontaneity because if you give me time to prepare for a photo opp, I’ll likely take the time to check my makeup and apply lip gloss first. Being in front of the camera also means making sure that I’m showing my best angle… you can’t take a photo of the right side of my face because it’s unflattering but my left side is okay! So I need to be on the right side of the other person in the photo so that I can angle myself properly for the picture.

These are the types of questions that run through my mind when someone says, “Let me take a picture.”

Does my face look fat?

Can you see the dark circles under my eyes?

Do my lips look too thin?

Is my face relaxed enough?

Should I smile or not?

Let’s not even talk about full body shots. Should I put my hand on my waist? On my hip? Should I put one leg in front of the other? Oh wait, I need to suck in my stomach.

Ugh.

When did I become so self-conscious? I think we all are.

Rather than focusing on the negative characteristics, we should somehow find beauty in those “flaws,” embrace them and focus on the things that we DO like about our physical appearance.

Who inspires me to Be Beautiful? My mom and her sister, my aunt. They take care of themselves, eat well, stay active and look fantastic. I give credit to their Greek genes and Mediterranean diet but also common sense; they indulge but they don’t go overboard – in all aspects of their lives. Everything in moderation.

My mom is soaking up the Florida sun and enjoying retirement. My aunt is turning 80 this year but does NOT look her age! I hope I have as much energy and vitality as she does when I’m her age. She truly is an inspiration and she inspires me to Be Beautiful.

For several months, I was a Sobeys ambassador and food blogger. Our Sobeys location is just across the street and open 24 hours so you can imagine the convenience. I would make a visit practically every day to grab ingredients for dinner. When I heard Sobeys was closing for renovations, I was so excited to see what the new store would look like.

The new Sobeys Extra store opened earlier this month. I couldn’t believe it was the same space as before. They did a complete renovation from top to bottom. Have you seen the new Sobeys commercials too with Jamie Oliver? Win.

As soon as you enter, you’ll see a hot table of freshly prepared foods as well as the larger produce section. Sobeys now has a much larger organic produce section so I’m thrilled about that.

Sobeys Extra store

As you move through the store past the produce section, there is also a display of freshly cut produce and fruit items for on-the-go cooking. I can see this as being a very convenient feature for busy families. There are also bagged and packaged salads to-go and fresh juices as well.

There is also a new cheese counter, apart from the deli department, with accompaniments for each cheese type. The new meat department offers a large variety of antiobiotic free and Certified Humane® Raised & Handled meat with brands like Aspen Ridge, duBreton natural pork, Blue Goose Certified Humane Chicken.

Sobeys Extra

The bakery seems more elaborate than before, with chocolate and cupcakes… you can grab a coffee and a dessert and go to town!

Sobeys bakery

The Sobeys Kitchen offers a variety of freshly prepared, ready-to-eat-or-heat meals. There is a sushi and noodle bar, stone oven-baked pizza section and roast beef from the kitchen. Beside that you’ll find the floral shop as well as a coffee bar! The store also offers food tastings and classes – they’ve created an area for this, as well as an area to sit and eat in-store.

I love how they’ve put all the fresh foods into one area of the store – produce, meat, deli, cheese, bakery and hot table on the one side; and then the packaged foods and frozen foods on the other side. All the refrigerated foods are behind glass doors.

In the middle of the store you’ll find the pharmacy as well as a wider selection of organic foods and products. I’m happy that there are so many gluten free and organic food and personal care products in the natural and wellbeing section of the store. The beautiful handmade soaps by Hugo & Debra Naturals just invite you in. There is also a wellbeing counsellor available too!

In 1990, 1 in 10 couples were having trouble conceiving. Those numbers are rising. Today 1 in 6 Canadian couples are having a hard time conceiving! It’s possible that you or someone you know has had fertility issues. That’s a startling number!

What has changed?

Rising fertility issues are related to environmental and lifestyle factors. Forty percent of diagnoses are attributed to the male, 40% to the female and 20% are diagnosed as unexplained. For men, estrogen levels are higher than ever before resulting in low sperm counts, motility and morphology issues while female factors include imbalanced vaginal pH, diminishing ovarian reserve, PCOS, endometriosis, etc.

Women are also trying to conceive later in life; the chances drop from 25 for women aged 20-25 to 5% chance per month of conceiving for women aged 40. There are limited options available for those initially struggling and treatments today are slow, invasive and costly.

I haven’t gone through infertility issues but I know many who have which is why I’m happy to share some information about a new product for couples trying to conceive.

The Stork by Rinovum Womens Health was created to help couples become pregnant from the privacy of their own home with their unique cervical cap insemination product. Physicians have used cervical cap insemination as a treatment for infertility since the 1950’s. The Stork allows for you to use this same process as an at home fertility treatment and at home conception aid.

CEO and Founder of The Stork, Steve Bollinger, says the best time to use The Stork when sex is no longer for fun but to just for trying to conceive! The product is a condom-like collection in a tampon like delivery system.

The Stork is drug free, latex free, doesn’t require injections or surgery, easy to use, it has three steps and is, cost-effective. This at home conception aid can be done in the privacy of your own home and puts the control in the hands of the couple.

How does it work?

A cervical cap in a condom-like silicone sheath is used to collect semen into a cervical cap and then placed near the cervix os for 4-6 where it can then enter and travel through the uterus to the fallopian tubes where fertilization occurs.

There are three steps to using The Stork. First, the male will put on a condom-like sheath. This is the Conceptacle which is used to collect and contain the semen during intercourse. The Conceptacle consists of a cervical cap that is inside of a condom-like sheath made out of silicone. The male will put this on for intercourse.

Once the semen is collected, the condom-like sheath of the Conceptacle is rolled down and off of the cervical cap that is inside at the bottom of the Conceptacle, much like rolling a condom off.

Then, the cervical cap is placed onto the included Applicator that cradles the cap, compressing it for ease of tracking into the vagina to the opening of the cervical os. The cervical cap allows the semen to stay close to the region that it needs to be near to swim up through to get to the egg. The female will keep the cap for 4-6 hours, and then remove by pulling the string, much like a tampon.

Here is a video to show how The Stork works.

at home ferlility treatment

The Stork is FDA approved and also approved in Canada where it’s newly available this month. The Stork is a very affordable for couples trying to conceive and are looking to try at home fertility treatments and at home conception aids, compared to the costs of intrauterine inseminations (IUI), in vitro fertilization (IVF) and other assisted reproductive technologies. The Stork is available to purchase from Amazon.ca for a cost of $126.99.

The Stork recommends that you use it no more than three times per month. If after six months you haven’t been successful, please go see your physician to discuss more aggressive treatment options.

Do you know couples who have had fertility issues?

Nothing says comfort like a warm soup on a cool day. I love potato and leek soup but sweet potatoes have much more nutrition. So here’s a twist on a traditional potato and leek soup using sweet potatoes instead!

Using sweet potatoes makes the soup a little sweeter in taste. Sweet potatoes are rich in Vitamin C, D, B6, iron, magnesium, potassium and more.

Here’s my recipe for sweet potato and leek soup and it’s dairy free and gluten free too!

Ingredients for Sweet Potato and Leek Soup:

3 leeks, just the white parts, chopped

3 sweet potatoes, chopped into cubes

1 tbsp. butter

1 carton organic vegetable broth (gluten-free)

½ cup almond milk

1 tsp sea salt

½ teaspoon black pepper

1/2 tsp garlic powder

Parsley to garnish

sweet potato leek soup

Directions:

In a pot, sautee butter with chopped leeks until soft. Add sweet potato and stir for a few minutes on medium-high heat. Pour in vegetable broth, salt, pepper and garlic powder. Stir and reduce heat to medium-low and cook for an hour. Using a hand blender, blend the soup until it becomes creamy.

Add almond milk and bring to a slight bowl. Add chopped parsley to garnish and serve.

Enjoy!

I can’t believe that soon enough, I’m going to have “the talk” with my son about puberty!

The first question is, when should we start talking to our kids about body changes and what they can expect to happen during puberty?

Our kids today are exposed to so much on television, magazines, music videos and the internet about sex and male-female relationships that they may already understand some “adult” topics. But talking about puberty is an important job for parents to do with their children.

Although curriculum may cover sex education in school, you may want to already be having the conversation with your children and answering their important questions. You can check with your Principal or teacher to see what exactly will be covered during the puberty talk but it’s helpful for girls to learn about the changes boys go through and boys learn about those affecting girls as well.

Your child may be sensitive or shy and may never ask you, unless you bring up the discussion with them first. Moms can’t avoid having the puberty talk with their daughters when they have their first period. But what about boys? They too are hitting puberty earlier than ever.

On average, girls begin puberty around 10 or 11 and boys at 11 or 12. However it’s normal to start puberty as early as 9 or 10 or as late as 15.

So when should we start talking about puberty?

tweens and puberty

It’s never too early to talk to your son and/or daughter about what to expect from puberty. It’s important to answer your kids’ questions about puberty with openness and honesty.

Experts recommend that parents should initiate the conversation. Although 8 or 9 may seem young, some boys and girls are already showing signs that puberty is around the corner. Girls’ breasts will first start to grow so when you notice your daughter’s developing chest, it’s a good time to start talking. For boys, you’ll notice their voices beginning to change or body hair appears.

Stay tuned for my next post about what you should be telling your daughter and how to make “the talk” more comfortable for mom and daughter, and read more tips about having the birds and the bees conversation.

Disclosure: I’m thrilled to be working with Always, Tampax and BeingGirl to share important information about kids and puberty!
