When you’re getting your photo taken, do you fix your hair first before striking a pose? Or do you just flash a smile and let the photographer snap the photo spontaneously?

I’m all for spontaneity because if you give me time to prepare for a photo opp, I’ll likely take the time to check my makeup and apply lip gloss first. Being in front of the camera also means making sure that I’m showing my best angle… you can’t take a photo of the right side of my face because it’s unflattering but my left side is okay! So I need to be on the right side of the other person in the photo so that I can angle myself properly for the picture.

These are the types of questions that run through my mind when someone says, “Let me take a picture.”

Does my face look fat?

Can you see the dark circles under my eyes?

Do my lips look too thin?

Is my face relaxed enough?

Should I smile or not?

Let’s not even talk about full body shots. Should I put my hand on my waist? On my hip? Should I put one leg in front of the other? Oh wait, I need to suck in my stomach.

Ugh.

When did I become so self-conscious? I think we all are.

Rather than focusing on the negative characteristics, we should somehow find beauty in those “flaws,” embrace them and focus on the things that we DO like about our physical appearance.

Who inspires me to Be Beautiful? My mom and her sister, my aunt. They take care of themselves, eat well, stay active and look fantastic. I give credit to their Greek genes and Mediterranean diet but also common sense; they indulge but they don’t go overboard – in all aspects of their lives. Everything in moderation.

My mom is soaking up the Florida sun and enjoying retirement. My aunt is turning 80 this year but does NOT look her age! I hope I have as much energy and vitality as she does when I’m her age. She truly is an inspiration and she inspires me to Be Beautiful.
