What no mom wants to talk about, never mind admit… You know what I’m talking about – down there.

Your Vajayjay, V-J, vagina or on a whole, your pelvic floor.

The “special place” that most moms don’t talk about especially after they have had kids. And really, there usually isn’t a need until something goes wrong and then they may talk to their doctor but that’s usually once it becomes a real problem.

So why is that? Well I guess the obvious. It’s not like you’re going to start chatting about your privates with the neighbour while you’re own cutting the lawn.

But more so, it’s just something we have been taught not to discuss. And I bet if you asked your mother, she would say “sure, I leak or wear a pad” but I had three kids. So???

It has becoming increasingly disturbing to me the amount of women that have incontinence. Whether it’s just spurts when they cough or sneeze, not being able to hold their urine when they have to go badly or wearing a pad to workout, it’s a lot more common than you think.  What a shame when you have young children but can’t run after them without being prepared.

The average age of my clients are in their mid-thirties and approximately 70% of them have some degree of pelvic floor weakness and as much as they think it’s “normal” after having kids, it’s not normal. All you have to do is ask yourself:  “If I am having an issue now, what’s going to happen once I hit fifty?” This is when Depends starts to make all their money.

But you can fix it or certainly slow down the process and I am going to approach it from a personal trainer’s point of view. The biggest error people make is forgetting that the pelvic floor muscles are like every other muscle in your body. So in other words, if you don’t use it, you lose it!

what moms don't talk about, women that have incontinence

Never mind that, combine that with the strain of pregnancy and delivery and it’s a whole new machine all together. Take this and add the fact that as we age, we lose muscle and tone and the only obvious way to counteract this would be strength training. i.e. Kegels!

However sometimes standard Kegels are not enough. Once you start an exercise program, any exercise program, you are eventually going to plateau.  Same goes “down there”.  At some point you must increase the resistance or change up the program to get your muscles to respond again and perform better.

This is why there are products that help you kick it up a notch when it comes to strengthening these muscles and did you know that there are even pelvic floor physiotherapists out there? Like I said, it’s way more common than you may think.

So think about this the next time you’re sitting around at your computer. Why not start right NOW and do some Kegels? You’re in control of what the future holds. Do you want to run and play with your kids, start running or just wear pads every day of the week? It’s up to you.

The vision of a world without conflict seems far-fetched and unrealistic, but around the world, youth are standing up to make this vision a reality.

November 18 marks Stand-Up Day, an anti-bullying day created by two Canadian youth who are passionate about spreading the word that bullying is wrong.

And, they’re not alone – 350 million children around the world suffer violence in schools each year and live in fear of going to school because of bullying, sexual violence and physical punishment.

Did you know that 44 per cent of Canadian youth have been bullied in school?

That’s a staggering number.  A recent survey commissioned by Plan Canada found that more girls (45 per cent) than boys (43 per cent) said they’ve been bullied.

British Columbia came in at the highest at 53 per cent, followed closely by Ontario, 50 per cent, while in Quebec that number is 26 per cent.

“Most bullies act in an inappropriate manner because they are not confident in themselves, and by quietly possessing self-confidence, youth can really dispel most bullying,” says Bryn, a Because I am a Girl Club Ambassador.

Thankfully, there are several programs to help create awareness and reduce bullying.

One way Plan Canada hopes to reduce bullying against children is through its Because I am a Girl Clubs in middle and high schools across Canada. These Girl Clubs aim to empower girls to support one another and stand up for the rights of girls in Canada and around the world. Activity ideas and resources on certain themes, such as self-esteem and conflict resolution, are provided through the club.

stand up to bullying day, stand up day

“I’ve always been a good student, and whenever other kids tease me about being smart, my mother would remind me in a comical way that ‘nerds rule the world,’” said Bryn.

Parents can help by raising their children to have a high self-esteem.  On the other hand, parents must also encourage their children to respect other people’s rights and other children, so that they do not grow up to be the bully.

Plan’s Learn Without Fear campaign is setting out to reduce violence against children in schools.  By changing behaviour and legislation, and engaging children, teachers, families and community members, as well as governments, it hopes that schools across the globe will be safe places for every child.

Meanwhile, schools can do more to educate and be educated about bullying.

“It’s definitely important that teachers are aware of the dynamic in the classroom. Also, children and youth learn best by experience. Reading in a textbook that bullying will not be tolerated does not convey the message as strongly as seeing that something is being done about the bully’s behaviour. A classroom plagued with bullying is not an enjoyable environment, even for the bystanders.”

Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher are ending their marriage.

“It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I have decided to end my six-year marriage to Ashton,” Moore, 49,  said in a statement.

“As a woman, a mother and a wife there are certain values and vows that I hold sacred, and it is in this spirit that I have chosen to move forward with my life. This is a trying time for me and my family, and so I would ask for the same compassion and privacy that you would give to anyone going through a similar situation.”

Kutcher, 33, tweeted his thoughts:

“I will forever cherish the time I spent with Demi…” adding,

“Marriage is one of the most difficult things in the world and unfortunately sometimes they fail. Love and light, AK.”

Sad that yet another Hollywood marriage is ending… but we did see this one coming.

Could their 16-year age gap be to blame?

It seems the tabloids about Kutcher’s alleged affair in September were true.  It also explains Moore’s recent racy twitter pics, showing skin and seemingly trying to hold on to her youth.

Apparently the couple went to Kabbalah counselling and reportedly trying to reconcile at Moore’s ex, Bruce Willis’ vacation home in Turks and Caicos.

But it just wasn’t enough to keep this marriage together.

Are you surprised that Ashton and Demi are over?

Surprise surprise!  The paternity lawsuit against Justin Bieber has been dropped.

Mariah Yeater, 20, alleged that the Canadian pop star was the father of her child. TMZ reported that after a call from Beiber’s laywer, Howard Weitzman, threatening legal action,  her lawyers reportedly withdrew from the case.

“As we’ve said from the beginning, it’s sad that someone would fabricate such a malicious, defamatory and demonstrably false claim. We’ll continue to consider all of our options to protect Justin,” Bieber’s rep said.

A court date had been set for December 15th.  Bieber, 17, was even prepared to take a paternity test to prove he didn’t father Yeater’s three-month-old baby.

Poor Biebs!  He threw out the so-called rumours right away, tweeted out he knew he would be a target, “but I’m never going to be a victim.”

The crazed fan is apparently trying to pursue her claim out of court.  The strangest part of all of this – if this had really happened, she would have been charged with statutory rape as Biebs was only 16 at the time of the alleged incident.

Bieber’s girlfriend, Selena Gomez, told Ellen DeGeneres it’s been tough for the couple since the crazy rumors began.

“What a crazy last two weeks it’s been in the news,” Ellen said to Gomez, 19, in an interview on her talk show.  “To say the least,” Gomez replied, saying it’s “not easy” dealing with the rumours but she and Bieber have been dealing with it all.

Throwing a party can be a huge task, but it can also be fun. At least for me it is. There is a lot of planning and work that goes into throwing a successful party. Perhaps that’s why most people chose not to throw parties themselves. Hopefully, with some simple tips, my detailed How-To-Guide can help you plan the perfect event!

Have a Plan

Planning is really the key to a having a successful party. Decide on the type of party you want. Think about dress code and theme, something that is fun and memorable.  On a personal note, for my 35th birthday, I had a Touch of Pink Party. The drinks were pink, the flowers and decorations were pink and all my guests came in a shade of pink…even some of the guys (wore pink ties).

Go beyond envisioning it – I would suggest drawing it out. I use an online decorating website to design the space, complete with table set up and furniture placement.  Spending this extra time on details will not go unnoticed by your guests.

Plan what type of serving dishes you are going to need for each item, complete with serving spoons and other key essentials and keep them ready.  You don’t want to be running around frantically looking for something when guests are at your party. You want to look calm and composed. After all, the overall objective is to make the hosting look effortless  – although it truly isn’t – with the amount of work and attention to detail, it is far from simple… but, you want to give the appearance that it is effortless!

party planning,

Invitations

Make a list of invitees and expect 20% will not attend. Having done this basic math will help you in terms of food preparation and budgeting.

Be realistic about how many people you can fit in your space. And don’t feel guilty about not inviting all your friends. You don’t have to invite everyone everywhere everytime!

Using my own example, I have a yearly tea party where I invite my closest girlfriends. I have other girlfriends, but I limit this particular party to a maximum of 14 people to keep it manageable and to in line with the scope of my theme.

For my children’s birthdays on the other hand, I invite only my friends that have children. I have many girlfriends that do not have children and don’t think it is necessary to invite them to a kiddie party. As I stated above, I do not have to invite everyone everywhere everytime.  Besides, I am always hosting some party or another so they will be invited to some event within the year.  In short, streaming your guest list is crucial for a successful party.

Don’t forget to send invitations approximately three weeks before a party, and set a reasonable rsvp time – this will enable you to get the necessary supplies you need, and will help with food planning and preparation.

Bradley Cooper has been named 2011’s Sexiest Man Alive by People magazine.

Ok I do like Cooper but the sexiest?  I’m not sure about that!

The Hollywood actor beat out other actors such as Ryan Gosling, Alec Baldwin and Idris Elba.

Did they get it right though?

Honestly, I think Ryan Gosling should have won the title this year.  Gosling has been everywhere!

People writes, “Ladies, take note: this Georgetown grad can whip up dinner, take you for a spin on his motorcycle and whisper sweet nothings in French (he’s fluent!). Just don’t try convincing him what a catch he is.”

“I think it’s really cool that a guy who doesn’t look like a model can have this. I think I’m a decent-looking guy. Sometimes I can look great, and other times I look horrifying,” said Cooper.

According to the mag, the 36-year-old has even more talents off the screen.  Cooper has some super skills in the kitchen – a man who can cook!  He also loves motorcycles and is fluent in French!

“I think it’s really cool that a guy who doesn’t look like a model can have this [title],” Bradley told People.

“I think I’m a decent-looking guy. Sometimes I can look great, and other times I look horrifying.”

It’s that time again! Cold and flu season is upon us. But you don’t have to fall prey to the number of viruses that seem to be everywhere this season.

Here are 8 tips to ensure that you and your kids stay healthy and fit this season.

8 tips on how to avoid getting sick

1. Get enough sleep.

Experts say children and teenagers need at least nine of hours of sleep a night to ensure good health. A tip to ensure kids are getting enough sleep – don’t allow TVs and computers in bedrooms.

2. Wash your hands.

One of the most common ways people catch a cold is by rubbing their nose or eyes after their hand has been contaminated with the cold virus. Teach your kids to wash their hands before they eat and after they use the bathroom. If there isn’t soap and water nearby, use a hand sanitizer.

3. Cover your mouth.

Remind your kids to cough and sneeze into a tissue and dispose it. Use your sleeve (not your hands) if a tissue is not available.

4. Stay away.

Avoid contact with people affected with cold and flu.  Keep children at home when they are sick so they can get better faster and avoid spreading germs to others.

5. Clean.

Clean hard surfaces frequently, including tables, desks, doorknobs, telephones, TV remotes and computer keyboards.

6. Start the day off right.

It’s true, eating a healthy breakfast gives your student a head start. Studies have shown that children who eat breakfast learn better, participate in class more often, behave better, and attend school more often. They even visit the school nurse less frequently.  Take a multi-vitamin and extra vitamin C and D.

7. Brown bag it.

Send your kid off to school with a packed lunch. Healthy lunches and nutritious snacks will keep kids focused energized throughout the day.

8. Keep active.

After school and on weekends, stay active. Take a walk in the park or enjoy a family bike ride.  When there is snow, enjoy a winter activity such as sledding, skating or skiing.

Others will say of course to get the flu shot — I’m on the fence about this one so I haven’t included it in my tips but something to obviously consider.

Stay healthy!

Dear New Mommy,

Congratulations on your new bundle of joy. The moment you’ve been anticipating for more than nine months of cravings, nausea, stretch marks, cankles, ultrasounds, listening to heartbeats, feeling baby kicks, nursery preparations, breathing, and a rollercoaster of emotions has finally arrived … Now what?

Oh the joys of becoming a new mom! Oh the bliss! You’re the vision of beauty, a natural mom! The happy, helpful husband by your side! The overbearing grandparents and relatives who spoil your baby boy or girl with gifts and hugs and kisses! The perfect baby who sleeps all night and never cries!

Who are we kidding? For some, this may be a reality … but for others, it simply isn’t so.

The hormones are a-raging. The milk comes in. And the baby blues kick in.

It’s just the blues, you tell yourself. Crying and laughing within the same breath. It’ll pass, they say, and for most new moms it does after a short time. But you can’t shake it. It’s not getting better. Weeks have passed and you should be happy — you have a beautiful baby – but you’re just not.

Get help. Period. See your doctor. Let go of the guilt and take care of yourself. If you are well mentally and emotionally healthy, then you can enjoy your baby as you’re meant to.

You’re meant to enjoy the newborn smell. The cuddles. The coos. Even when you will feel that huge need to take a break it’s okay. You’re still a good mother.

You’ll be cranky due to the lack of sleep and feel like it’s all a blur. Ask for help — even an hour so you can take a shower and get a bite to eat.

Ask for food. Especially if you’re breastfeeding, welcome your mom’s home cooking and don’t say no to your mother-in-law’s casserole because you’re going to be hungry all the time. These homemade dishes will come in handy when you’re exhausted and feeling like a milk machine.

No one told you breastfeeding doesn’t always come naturally and that your nipples will crack and bleed and you’ll want to give it up. Your pro-breastfeeding friends will urge you to keep going but if it becomes too much don’t feel guilty. Do what is right for you.

Enjoy the friends and family who want to see the baby — when you are ready. The ones who pop in to visit the baby without any notice and don’t get the hint when they see the anti-bacterial gel at the door? Don’t worry if they get offended when you tell them that you’re not ready for visitors yet.

When you come out of the big blur, when you get some more sleep, when you get the hang of diapering, feeding, burping, swaddling routine, you will snap out of that zombie-like slumber and rise above. Feel normal again. You will be a stronger and wiser woman, someone who can care for her baby but also herself. You will come out of the darkness and enjoy the light again, I promise.

From one mama to another.

~Maria
