There isn’t a place I enjoy more with the kids then the Aquarium du Quebec.

We often pack snacks and a picnic lunch and make a day of it.  The Aquarium du Quebec not only has 10,000 marine animals for the kids to enjoy but a picnic area, playground, splash pad and a ropes course (for kids 6 -12) as well as four different food venues.  It’s perfect for an afternoon outing or an all-day event! If you are visiting on a Sunday, why not book a table for their Sunday Brunch, then explore all the park has to offer.

Admission to the park is reasonable, but the best deal if you live in the area is the annual passport which gives you access to the park for a full year.  Within a couple of visits the passport pays for itself.  Plus with all the humidity and hot days we get over the summer, having access to the splash pad and air conditioned pavilions is delightful.

The recent addition of a new Stingray pavilion adds a new venue to explore and a chance learn more about our aquatic friends.  I haven’t checked it out yet, but my family has been anticipating it for the past two years as we watched the construction.

While at the Aquarium De Quebec make sure to catch the Walrus show.  The walruses will entertain you with their antics.  Who knows, you may even catch a kiss from one!

My 3-year-old has way too much energy for her own good. I can either keep her at home and go crazy from telling her over and over again to stop climbing the furniture or let her play it out with other kids, while I drink coffee.

Sometimes you need some sanity and a good cup of coffee.

As a play cafe connoisseur, my daughter and I have high expectations. Here is how the play cafes in Edmonton and St. Albert measure up.

Cafe O’ Play

Cafe O’ Play is one of the original play cafes in Edmonton. I remember hearing about it and thinking: “What a brilliant idea”.

It is best suited for kids under 5. My 3-year-old still likes it, but she’s too tall to fit into the play cars and the plastic backyard furniture/slides are starting to bore her. She does love socializing with all of the kids and still really enjoys herself.

Café O’Play has lots of free parking and has discounted summer admission right now. It’s only $3 for kids to play and during their happy hour (1-3pm) it’s only $1. Make sure you get there early as it really fills up, especially on Saturdays (they are not open on Sundays during the summer.

Their food is good, although It’s a little on the expensive side for what you get. Their lattes are fantastic though. Try the Yummy Mummy, it’s my favorite.

Cafe Tiramisu

Cafe Tiramisu is new to 124th street. It’s a restaurant with a room for kids to hang out and play with iPads or read books.

The room for kids is suited for all ages, but I have yet to bring my 3-year-old. She had way too much energy to sit still and do anything. I can almost 100% guarantee that she would climb the furniture. This is not a typical indoor play park.

I brought my newborn to Cafe Tiramisu to meet a friend for lunch, recently. The staff was very accommodating and I felt comfortable nursing her at the table.

Café Tiramisu has a hip atmosphere and has some really beautiful décor. The food is amazing and they have a lot of healthy choices. I would bring a baby sling as parking is limited (especially the free angle parking) nearby. Café Tiramisu can get very busy and they have table service. This is not the place to go if you are short on time.

Java Mama

Java Mama is located in a new part of St. Albert. It just opened up recently and is in a circle that includes yoga studios and specialty stores.

Java Mama has a big play area includes a house, slide and a lot of smaller toys. My daughter loves the variety of toys to play with, especially the kid sized shopping carts. She could (and has) played at Java Mama for hours.

Java Mama has a sectioned off play area for babies that contains big blocks, exersaucers and toys. It’s a really nice touch. This section is unique to the indoor play parks that I have been to.

The food was okay at Java Mama. I did enjoy my grilled turkey sandwich, but the cinnamon bun I ordered was stale and attached to the grocery store styrofoam plate

Unfortunately, Java Mama has a huge design flaw; you can’t see your child/children playing from the seating area. It’s hard to monitor your child or know if it is your kid crying. There is seating inside the play area, but it’s sparse you can’t bring in food or drinks. To me, this is a deal breaker.

Little Beans

Little Beans is in St. Albert, just across from the Sturgeon Hospital. It just opened up in February of this year.

My daughter loves their wooden play structures. She can climb, slide and jump. I meet up with other moms who have children in ages that range from 1 to 4 and their kids love the custom play structures too.

The food is amazing. We usually go in the morning. I have a huge bowl of yogurt, fresh berries and granola. My daughter has a homemade muffin. They have a lot of gluten-free items on the menu including a cheese and cracker plate and Callebaut chocolate haystack cookies. It is really nice to watch my daughter eat the same food as her celiac friends. Also, their coffee is great. They use chai concentrate from Remedy Café in their chai lattes. Highly recommended! So yummy!

Little Beans has a $6 admission. This is the steepest cost of the play cafes. With multiple kids, this can be an expensive outing. Make sure you bring a baby sling. Little Beans is in a busy area and parking spots can be hard to find.

For me, these indoor play parks are a life saver. They get me out of the house and into real pants. I hope you enjoy them as much as my daughters and I do.

I love Montreal.  I was born here.  I’ve been to many cities and have loved them all but there is something about my home town that just makes me feel good.  Every season there is something fun and exciting to do.  When I was younger downtown was the place to be in the summertime.

Sitting on an open terrace, after work, carefree, no where to go and not stressed about the next appointment.  It was bliss.  Now being a mom to four amazing kids is also bliss, just a different kind.  Still there are lots of things to do in and around Montreal with kids.  It’s interesting for me to see it from a mom’s point of view and getting to know Montreal in a different way than when I was younger is challenging but I believe still possible.

Now there are a lot of things on my list to do with the kids and this summer I plan on crossing a few of those off.  June is a beautiful month here and really kicks off with a bang.  So here are a few of my favorites to do in the month of June.

1.  Grand Prix

Grand Prix kicks off this weekend June 8th-10th.  It’s great for families with older kids.  It’s loud so be prepared for the noise. Make sure to bring sunscreen and a hat, as there is not much shade.  On their website you can find everything you need for the weekend from hotels to restaurants.

The circuit which is located on Ile-Notre Dame at Parc Jean Drapeau is also one of the nicest places to walk, take a bike ride, and have a family picnic.  Of course you want to do these things when it’s not Grande Prix weekend.  The city is just buzzing on this weekend and you are sure to see some celebrities who come in for the weekend.

In the early 1980’s in Baie-Saint-Paul a little village east of Quebec City a phenomenal idea took shape.  In the theatre troupe called The Stiltwalkers of Baie-Saint-Paul, was a gentleman by the name of Gille Ste Croix.  If you aren’t familiar with this man you are familiar with what he founded.

2.   The Cirque Du Soleil.

In April a new production called Amaluna opened.  In the delightful Old Port of Montreal you can take in this show until July 15th. There are so many things to do in this quaint part of Montreal. You can stroll, shop in the various boutiques, find all kinds of gems, or take in something to eat. Something for every taste and budget can be found in Old Montreal.  Cirque du Soleil is one of the must do things on my list with the kids.

3.  The International Fireworks Festival

One of the other things I have done and it really is a lot of fun is The International Fireworks Festival which begins at the end of the month on June 30th and runs until August 3rd. I haven’t taken my kids but I have been to see them and each country is truly spectacular. I do however have a favorite of course, it’s Canada.  These shows are amazing, featuring two types of fireworks. Traditional shows which are the usual or more classical type of fireworks.  The second type is Pyromusical which feature fireworks carefully synchronized to a musical score.  The amount of people who come to see these fireworks is astounding.

4.  La Ronde

You can pay to see them at La Ronde-Montreal’s best amusement park, make a whole day of it with the family. There are also places you can see them for free, but you want to get there early as it gets really crowded.  Hence the reason I have not brought my kids yet.  This summer I believe they are all old enough so again, another fun activity to cross off my list.

If you happen to join us Montrealers in June, no matter what you do you are sure to have a great time, get a nice full belly, and have some amazing experiences that may just keep you coming back for more.

The summer heat is here. Your friends and neighbors gather on your back porch or patio and take in the plethora of color and summer bounty, that you have planted for their enjoyment. Or not!

Is your garden ready for admirers or is is it a sight for sore eyes? Do you have two left, brown thumbs?

Have no fear, the indestructible hardy plants list is here. The following five plants fill your garden year after year. They will also love you, even when you have no time to love them back.

They are presented by category. Plant 3-5 of each of the following plants and you will have a beautiful garden all summer long. You may even want to plant a low hedge or border of one of the following easy, no fuss, can’t kill them plants.

So here are my picks for 5 easy plants to grow in the garden:

1.  Top Fruit

Red Raspberry (Rubus idaeus)

Rambles just about anywhere. Will freely self seed into more plants if you forget to pick the fruit, and the birds get to them. Delicious in drinks. Some varieties produce fruit all summer long. It is one of the highest in antioxidants. You can be ‘green’ and healthy.

2.  Top Vegetable

Swiss chard (Beta vulgaris)

Hearty, green leafy vegetable that can be sautéed, broiled on the BBQ, along with your favorite fish and meats. The fresh young leaves are a super food, when eaten craw. Grows all summer long and has very few bug infestations. Bonus for the dinner party vegetarians: it is high in protein.

3.  Top Flower

Cosmos (Cosmos bipinnatus)

Self seeding, tall, feathery beauty. Comes in a multitude of colors including pinks, purples, yellows and white. Loves the summer heat. Do not over water. It is drought tolerant and can be planted in large masses. There are hundreds of varieties and may grow between 1-4 feet. As cut flowers, they will last up to 10 days in water. They also attract birds and butterflies, so you can define yourself as a self proclaimed wildlife specialist.

4. Top Sweet Herb

Mint (Mentha piperita)

This herb has a square stem, like all plants in the mint family. It loves shade, part shade and will tolerate full sun. Great for moist soils. It spreads quite rapidly and can be used to fill any container in the garden. When planting in open beds, dig in a steel or plastic divider wall, into the ground where you want to keep it at bay. Excellent as an addition to any dish and summer drink. Mojito anyone?

5.  Top Savory Herb

Chives (Allium schoenoprasum)

Beautiful, multipurpose self caring herb that loves the heat, the sun, and the neglectful gardener. It will thrive just about anywhere. Chives naturally repel insects, so they help keep pests away from your other plants. It serves as an excellent substitute for onions and challots if you’re in a pinch. You can eat the green stems as well as the purple flower heads.

If you are really nervous, take 1 of each of the above plants (except for the raspberry) and put them into one big planter. Some love heat and dry soil and some love moist soil. Some love the full sun and some love the shade.

By end of summer, you will know which plants you prefer and then can grow more of those next year!

Summer is here, and it’s time to nourish and protect the skin you’re in!

You likely spend a lot of time making sure your kids are slathered head to toe in sunscreen, but in true motherly fashion, you likely put yourself last. Time to end that thinking!

Looking after our skin is important year round, but when the layers of clothing come off and we are spending more time frolicking (ok, more like running and keeping up…) outdoors, pampering yourself is a necessity, not a luxury. And, honey, let’s face it. Those carefree days of Hawaiian Tropic oil all over our silly 16 year old selves are ovah!

1.  Sunscreen:

You know you need this, right? Lots of it? The problem is that a lot of sunscreens are fine on our bodies, but wreak havoc with our pores. Breakouts, sensitivity, rashes…yikes. So best to keep it gentle on our faces.

Splurge: Skinceuticals Physical Fusion UV Defense SPF50 ($32) is incredible. Waterproof, non-comedogenic with a tiny bit of tint, this lasts hours and somehow manages to improve the look of your skin, while actually being so light you don’t even know it’s there.

Save: Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Liquid Daily Sun Protection SPF55 ($12) is fantastic. Another sheer and weightless sunscreen offering oil-free waterproof/sweatproof protection. This one is perfect on it’s own, or under/over your make up. It is also PABA free and non irritating.

2.  Eye Cream:

This is all the more important on those squinty sunny days. We sweat, we get dehydrated, we forget our sunglasses, and we squint. Yikes! So keep that area nourished and moisturized. My eyes are very sensitive so I keep my sunscreen in my face cream and stick to amazing rich ingredients for my eye cream.

Splurge: Shiseido Wrinkle Resist24 Intensive Eye Contour Cream is simply genius. I have tried hundreds (well not quite…but almost) of eye creams and not even the uber expensive ones come close to working as well as this one. Keeps your eye area soft and supple, plumps dry skin with hyarulonic acid, and gently erases fine lines with a mild retinol.

Save: Olay Regenerist Eye Lifting Serum ($25) helps to firm and moisturize the entire eye area. Olay continues to blow away higher priced brands in blind tests and I have deep love for this line. The Regenerist Eye Lifting Serum has a gorgeous silky texture sinks right into the skin around the eye and makes a perfect base for make up as well.

3.  Lip Balm:

Splurge: Jane Iredale LipDrink SPF15 ($15) is simply amazing. Very gently flavored with a bit of a lemonade essence that is just yummy, and wow does it protect your lips while making them super soft. Love.

Save: Maybelline Baby Lips SPF20 ($5) are probably the most incredible thing you will spend $5 on. The clear formula is incredible as it moisturizes and sinks right into your lips, indeed making them baby soft. But try the tints! They are awesome! Cherry Me makes you look like you just had a cherry popsicle – seriously pretty.

4.  After Sun Care:

Even if you have been good and kept your skin protected with sunscreen, and possibly a wide brimmed hat, a day outside in the sun, wind and fresh air can leave you feeling fantastic, exhilarated but a bit dry and dehydrated. I’m sure you all have a big old bottle of aloe vera gel, which is a must have for everyone.

But, I have a quick post shower routine that cools, soothes and refreshes. One of my fave prodz ever is rosewater. Any old rosewater will do, just choose your fave.

I buy the cheap stuff from the health food store, put in a spray bottle (hello, dollar store!) and spritz myself head to toe. Rosewater soothes and nourishes irritated skin, reduces inflammation and makes you feel lovely. They often contain aloe and glycerin as well, which just add to the feel good/do good factor. Try it, you won’t believe how good it feels.

Protect and nourish yourself, because you know you are worth it. It’s easy, right?

The countdown to summer has officially begun!  Summer is just around the corner which means tons of parties, barbeques and lots of food!

We all want to look and feel our best, especially during the summer months when sandals and shorts are mandatory!

But maintaining a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle, especially during summer season, can be daunting.  With the right tools and some healthy summer tips, it can be as easy as picking up a spoon!

Dietician Keri Glassman and Dannon Oikos are encouraging you to “Grab a Spoon ‘til June” with rich and creamy 0% fat Dannon Oikos® Greek nonfat yogurt to help you stay on track towards your goals while at the same time adding spice to your normal routine.

Here are some healthy summer eating tips from Keri to help you get started:

Eat better with every meal:

Focus on eating better, one meal at a time. Otherwise it can be easy to get discouraged – forget the worry! Your only mission: Make the next meal you eat nutritious, balanced and satisfying.

Watch the cravings:

Indulge but be smart about it.  Fulfill that craving with a conscious indulgence – take a few deep breaths and find a healthy alternative. Satisfy your sweet tooth with Dannon Oikos® Greek nonfat yogurt – it’s nutritious but still has an incredible taste.  Add some walnuts and honey to make it even sweeter.

Get moving:

Sometimes the biggest barrier to working out is just getting started!  In the summer, make it as easy as possible – just get outdoors and go biking, rollerblading or go for a brisk walk.

Eat protein:

A moderate-protein balanced diet with a reasonable amount of fiber, carbohydrates and the appropriate amount of healthy fats is the best way to maintain a healthy weight. Dairy is a great source of protein and keeps you feeling full longer.  Greek non-fat yogurt like Dannon Oikos® has twice the protein of regular low-fat yogurt (Oikos Greek Nonfat yogurt has 12 -14g Protein (24%DV) while regular lowfat yogurt: 5g protein (10%DV) per 5.3oz.).

Be sure to visit OikosYogurt.com for more tips, messages, advice, recipes and more – or visit them on Facebook – and when it’s snack time, don’t forget to Grab a Spoon!

Dannon Oikos also shares some fantastic recipes on their website to help shake up your diet routine.

Moms who plan to exclusively breastfeed for at least three months are not keeping their goals, a new study says.

More than 85% of new moms said they intended to breastfeed for three months or more but only 32.4% actually met their mark.

A full 15 percent of these breastfeeding-intentioned moms stop nursing before they even leave the hospital.

The statistics were published in an article in Pediatrics, the journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics.  The study was based on questionnaires completed by thousands of moms on a monthly basis between 2005 and 2007 as part of a joint study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Food and Drug Administration.

Moms who were obese or smoked were less likely to breastfeed exclusively.   Moms who were most likely to meet their breastfeeding goals were married and had given birth to other children.  They also started to breastfeed within an hour of birth, and their babies were less likely to be given formula or pacifiers during the hospital stay.

Breastfeeding exclusively while in the hospital without supplemental formula was the most significant factor in reaching breastfeeding goals.  I share my own experience when I had my first child.

So… the fact that formula companies are targeting new moms as soon as they are able, are making it “easier” for moms to stop breastfeeding.

It seems that many hospitals in the United States are set up to hinder breastfeeding, rather than encourage and help moms who want to nurse.

It’s clear that nursing soon after birth is crucial to establish a successful breastfeeding relationship.

But it’s also very clear that avoiding formula is also a way to ensure that moms nurse… however, new moms seem to find formula as an option at every turn; the hospital, the doctor’s office and even with free samples and coupons in the mail.

According to the advocacy group Public Citizen, nearly two-thirds of US hospitals still give out free formula samples to new moms.

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend that mothers breastfeed exclusively for about the first six months of their baby’s life.

When I hear that more than 85% of new moms said they intended to breastfeed for three months or more but only 32.4% actually met their mark, it begs the question – why?

When I in labour with my first son, I had developed a fever near (the whole thing was a nightmare).  My baby boy was put on antibiotics right after I gave birth.  I was dealing with my afterbirth while he was whisked away to NICU.

Once I was transferred to my hospital room and “came to” after the ordeal (episiotomy and vacuum used for delivery), I asked where my baby was – I wanted to breastfeed him.

The nurse said they had given him a feeding.

“Excuse me?” I replied.  Who the hell authorized you to give him a feeding?!  I wanted his first feeding to me my breast milk!

“Oh, we only fed him a little bit.”

“I don’t care – I want my baby right now, I want to feed him right now,” I said.

I was furious.  Emotionally and physically drained from the labour and delivery, now you’re telling me I can’t breastfeed my baby?!?!  Keep in mind you are also very emotional post-partum – anything can trigger you to burst into tears.

I had planned how the whole labour and delivery was going to be… and although it didn’t go the way I had hoped, I at least wanted to have my baby on my chest and breastfeed him as soon as possible after birth.

That didn’t happen.

Fine, I could live with that – after all, he needed to get his needles done and needed antibiotics.  But I was disappointed that they didn’t think to bring him back to me to nurse him.  Or at least make an attempt.

I was very upset that they had given him formula without asking me. Couldn’t they have considered bringing him to me to nurse?   See if I was able to even try?  I honestly don’t know what the nurses were thinking…

The experience gave me a taste of what can happen when the hospital “takes charge” and makes decisions for you.  Not that formula hurt anybody but it was MY choice to nurse – it was MY choice to refuse formula.

It’s no wonder that 15 percent of moms who intend to breastfeed stop nursing before they even leave the hospital.

I’m not going to even get into the epidural nightmare I had…

After giving birth, did you breastfeed right away? Did you feel the hospital pushed formula?

By entering, entrants also agree (a) to be bound by these Official Rules; (b) that the decisions of the Judges are final and binding with respect to all matters relating to the Contest; and (c) if the entrant wins that AMW may use the winning photographs and each winner’s name, photograph, likeness, and/or voice in any publicity or advertising relating to the Contest or future promotions without compensation or approval (except where prohibited by law). All federal, state/provincial/territorial, and local taxes, fees and surcharges and taxes (whether foreign or domestic, and including income, sales, and import taxes) on prizes are the sole responsibility of the prize winners. In the event that the selected winner(s) of any prize is/are ineligible, cannot be traced or does/do not respond within ten (10) days to a winner notification as required by the “Contest Prizes” Rules above, or refuses the prize, the prize will be forfeited and AMW, in its sole discretion, may choose whether to award the prize to another entrant.

AMW reserves the right to verify the validity and originality of any entry and/or entrant (including an entrant’s identity and address) and to disqualify any entrant who submits an entry that is not in accordance with these Official Rules or who tampers with the entry process. Failure by AMW to enforce any of its rights at any stage does not constitute a waiver of those rights.

Right to Cancel or Suspend Contest:   If for any reason the Contest is not capable of running as planned, due to infection by computer virus, bugs, worms, trojan horses, denial of service attacks, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures, or any other causes beyond the control of NGS that corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity, or proper conduct of this Contest, NGS reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to disqualify any individual(s) who tamper with the entry process, and/or to cancel, terminate, modify, or suspend the Contest. If AMW elects to cancel or terminate the Contest, AMW will not retain any rights in the submitted photographs, and will return the fees submitted with each entry.
