Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis are splitting up, according to Gossip Cop.

“Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis have amicably separated,” the publicist told Gossip Cop in a statement.

“Please respect their privacy and, more importantly, the privacy of their children.”

The couple have been together since 1998 – 14 years! Can any relationship in Hollywood last?

Although they never married, the actor and the French actress and singer have two children – a 12-year-old daughter named Lily Rose and a 10-year-old son named Jack.

Back in May, Depp denied reports that he and Paradis were splitting.

In late February, In Touch reported spotting Depp, 48, leaving Ashley Olsen’s apartment in New York City.

At that time, Depp was “looking like he didn’t want to be seen,” a witness told the magazine.

Perhaps those rumors were true!

Apples, celery and sweet bell peppers have the most pesticide residues, according to the Environmental Working Group’s Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides.

Pesticides can be extremely toxic to human health and the environment. Both U.S. and international government agencies have linked pesticides to cancer, nervous system toxicity, hormone system disruption and IQ deficits among children.

You can lower your pesticide intake substantially by avoiding the 12 most contaminated fruits and vegetables and eating the least contaminated produce.

Each year Environmental Working Group analyzes nearly 100,000 produce pesticide reports from the USDA and the FDA to determine what fruits and vegetables contain the highest (the “Dirty Dozen”) and lowest (the “Clean 15″) amounts of chemical residue.

2011 List of Foods to Buy Organic

by Samantha Montpetit-Huynh

So there’s no denying it – summer is around the corner!  In case you haven’t noticed, people are walking around in less and less clothing. And if you are like many, you glance around you at all the cute tops, flirty dresses and sexy tanks some women are wearing and think to yourself, “wouldn’t that be nice?”

Apart from the (very small) percentage of women who are just naturally long and lean,  if you want to be, look and feel fit, you need to work hard for it.  The good news is – it’s not too late!

But you also have to be realistic.  If you’re looking for noticeable change and soon, you need to accept that there will have to be some significant sacrifices made in order to achieve the fitness results you want.

But I need to lay some ground rules; doing too much of anything will create a deficit in some form or another and can cause more harm than good.

Here are some of my best tips to get healthy and in shape for summer:

1.  Put the treats away.

If you want to lose pounds, burn body fat and look lean, nibbling on “just one cookie” can make or break your success. Fat loss is a very specific system but not rocket science. If you put crap in, you will get crap out.

2.  Go into the weight room.

Anyone can do cardio. Put your runners on, get outside and walk BUT doing only this form of exercise only burns calories while you are doing it. Instead, why not increase the number of calories you burn all day? Muscles need fuel to perform and burn calories just to exist. The muscles you have – the more calories burned.

3.  Eat more often – period!

Waiting too long in between meals is a fantastic way to ruin your metabolism and store anything that goes in, as fat. The more fat you have, it doesn’t matter how much your workout – you wont see the results of all your hard work!

6 best tips to get healthy and in shape4.  Eat more greens!

Although fruit is very good for you, it is also filled with a lot of natural sugar. Whether it’s natural or refined, raising your blood sugar is a no-no Three days a week is great for maintenance, but if you want results that you cwhen trying to manage your food intake and control cravings. The more sweet you have, the more you want so filling up with more green vegetables is a great way to be able to eat more often, avoid blood sugar spikes and crashes and keep that metabolism working.

5.  Workout AT LEAST 4+ days per week.

an see, you need to push the envelope! Strength train 3+ days and cardio 5+ days. The combo will give the benefits of burning calories while exercising as well as increasing the number you burn overall.

6.  Don’t over-train.

Now I realize I just told you 3-5 days of exercise but there are some that like to think “if I train every day, that will be even better, right?”. Wrong. Muscles need to rest and repair just like you do. If you want ideal performance at work, you need a solid night’s sleep; so do your muscles. That’s how muscles build. Rest and proper nutrition fuel muscles so they can work optimally and produce even more. Over-training will only get you in trouble and is a common cause of muscle fatigue and injury.

So if you want to lose fat (not muscle), look lean (not skinny) and feel strong, you need to raise your metabolic rate  which is a combination of strength and proper nutrition, plain and simple. There is no magic potion or pill (although billions are spent trying) because it just comes down to how bad you want it.

So how bad do you want to look good in that sleeves dress? Are you fed up with summer sneaking up on you every year and saying the same thing? Well if you are, it’s up to you to either spend another one repeating old patterns or stop and do something about it.  These 6 tips to get healthy and fit for summer will get you on your way!

Without further ado, here are our Hottest Moms 2012 entries!

 Tunde Duncan

Why am I hot? I’m not sure, so I asked my daughter, who else right? It is a hot mom contest. She is 8 and this is what she said: “You are pretty and cool, and you are nice and I love you. That is why you are hot mommy. There is beauty in everything and everybody.”

Catherine Marie:

Nominated by Tunde Duncan:  I think Catherine is a hot mom because she is genuine loving and caring. She has style and she is lots of fun!

Laura

Nominated by Teresa:  My sister is the hottest mom I know! She hits the gym fierce, works & volunteers at the kids school and cooks and bakes up a storm every chance she gets. She always has a big smile for everyone.

Catherine Burden

I believe I am a “Hot Mom” because I don’t look like I am 51 thanks to my wonderful hair stylist! He has given me the ‘red hair’ I grew up with and you can’t tell I’ve had my hair done. This is important because my body is wrecked with pain on a daily basis and if I look good, I may feel better.

Carla Sullivan

I am a mom to three, have a website, and still have time to make great meals for my husband. We also just recently moved to the suburbs and I try to SMILE and enjoy..:)

 Deborah Coombs

I’m a Hot Mom because I’m strong. Strong in heart and will and love. I’m hot because I’m confident in me and comfortable in my body. I’m not perfect, but I’m me. At 42 I think I finally know what that means, and I’m ok with what I’ve found. I speak my mind, but not unkindly. I support my friends and am fiercely loyal. I treasure my boys and will go all momma-bear on anyone who tries to hurt them. Don’t you want to know me?

Kat Inokai

Nominated by Mara Shapiro:  Kat is HOT from the tips of her witty repartee to the bottom of her fashionably clad tootsies. I love her humour, bravery, and nonchalant fantastic-ness. Seriously, hot is as hot does, and Kat exemplifies all that a young mom should be. Not only is she brilliant at work, but she also plays with her gorgeous mini-me daughter.

Mara Rubinoff Shapiro

Nominated by Kat Inokai: Tell us why you are nominating this Hot Mom! Mara’s joie de vivre, caring nature, amazing talent for writing and making people laugh, her awesome mom skills.. and let’s not forget her killer legs and flawless complexion make her the HOTTEST Mom of 2012. Represent.

Elizabeth Pagel-Hogan

When you’re surrounded by love, it’s hard not to feel hot! I’m a runner, writer, soccer coach, volunteer, and supreme bedtime storyteller – my husband & 3 sons inspire me & motivate me! We’re always up to something. Life’s too short – I like to have fun, work hard, but look good, too!

Ariana Stainmez

I think what makes me a “hot mom” is the fact that I always choose my children before myself. It’s not very often I get dressed up, put on make-up or go out. I am usually dressed in yoga pants, covered in spit up and have huge bags under my eyes. But I wouldn’t change it for anything. I love my kids and I think any loving parent is “hot.”

Alicia Higginson

Nominated by Angela Yakonich: Alicia is the full time working Mama of three ladies, madly in love with her husband, Ryan, and a dedicated daughter, sister and friend. She is the honest, hilarious and tell-it-like-it-is author of the Life With Ladies blog. She’s a proud thrifter and uses these talents to put together a style all her own, looking fabulous at work and play. Since becoming a mom, then returning to work, her ambition, personality, sense of humour, style, beauty and grace have evolved into something that can leave those lucky enough to be part of her life, in absolute awe…making her a HOT Mom!

Toby Collins

My 2 daughters, Chelsie, 23, and Cristel, 20, keep me in style and let me know when I’m not! LOL We are more like sisters and friends, than Mom and daughters. I believe in taking care of myself and try to always find the positive side of things. Try to always have a smile. We did win a Mother and Daughter Look-Alike contest 3 years ago. And we have a lot of fun when we go out!

Emily Dimmell

I’m a hot mom because I have 4 beautiful children under the age of 6, and I have started my own very successful businesses while staying at home with my littles. I am active in our community, and I do my part for charities both local and distant. I am an earth advocate- solar panels on my house, cloth diapering my babies, making my own baby food and more. I even bake allergy-friendly baked goods because my 3rd born has colitis which requires a lot of dietary restrictions. While I am doing all of these wonderful things…I still get double takes , sure makes a woman feel good!

Natasha

Natasha Nominated by Cindy Wheeler: This is my best friend Natasha, she is not a professional model. She is a wife and mother of 2 boys. She is as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside. She is a wonderful mother and her boys are her world. She is smoking hot!!!

VOTING ENDS JUNE 30, 2012.  Contest Prizes from Mabel’s Labels and Hamilton Beach!

Contest Rules

Would it be considered cyber bullying yourself to enlist in the help of an online dating service?

That whole discussion is still up for debate.  Some swear that that is the lowest form of interpersonal relations, yet others have found their perfect match as easily as ordering a pair of shoes online.

Are we just setting ourselves up for scrutiny or even worse – rejection?

My brother Andrew met his wife through an online site. He is handsome, outgoing and never had an issues meeting women.  One of the reasons that he and many others decided to try the online route was to have the upper hand.

Yes there are lots of single guys and gals out there.  But how do you sort through the good the bad and the ugly without making a career out of serial dating? I guess you can say that these online dating sites rule out the middle man.

I often have to submit a bio of myself for special events or articles that I write. They are a quick overview of my accomplishments, and what kind of footwear I prefer!  After viewing that bio, the reader will also have an opportunity to meet me, hear me speak or continue with my article to get a further outlook on what I am all about or my point of view.  When you create your online profile, it’s your one shot to create that first and lasting impression.

When I interviewed some people about their online experiences, one gal said that the viewers are so flippant, one wrong word and they are on to the next profile without giving you even another thought. Yet others say that it allows you to see how articulate the possible candidate is… if they can’t spell or form a complete sentence they are instantly voted off of the cyber island. I have a hard time tweeting 140 characters some days, I’m not sure just how easily I could sum up what makes me such a great catch!

I can’t say for sure how I feel about online dating because I haven’t tried to use one. I do however think that you can’t knock something until you’ve tried it.  I am at that stage of my life where I can be a very social person who is out and about all the time, so the odds of me being in front of my laptop is more rare than me being face to face with people.

But if you’re a single parent at home with young children, online dating is great way to stay connected while still being able to fold laundry and unload the dishwasher. Perhaps you travel a lot for work and can’t get into the dating scene, I think its a great alternative to being lonely.

As I have said before and will say again, “unless you  put yourself out there you can’t get yourself back out!”

There are plenty of fish – you just have to go fishing!

It’s almost the end of the school year (already over for others)!  No more teachers, no more books… but before school is out for summer, you want to show your appreciation for the special teachers in your child’s life by giving them a thoughtful gift. But what are some great ideas for teacher gifts?

Mugs, chocolate, soaps – teachers have likely grown tired of these standard gift ideas. Homemade baked goods – some teachers might be wary to eat them. You’ll hear parents talking about unique teacher gift ideas for end of school and scrambling to find some great ideas.

For those of you who are uber-organized – and even for those of you who are last-minute people (like me) – here are 10 great ideas for teacher gifts:

10 Great Ideas for Teacher Gifts

10 Great Ideas for Teacher Gifts

1.  Gift Cards

Gift cards to local coffee shops, restaurants and movie theatres are always a good bet. Don’t forget… wine stores, or the LCBO!

2.  Larger gift card

Ask other parents if they’d be interested in pooling money to purchase a gift card in a larger amount to a nice restaurant or department store. This will allow the teacher to buy one big thing that he or she really needs while being very affordable for most parents.

3.  Books

Teachers also appreciate gift certificates to book stores so they can either purchase a book for themselves, or books for the classroom.

4.  Blooms

Flowers and potted plants always brighten up someone’s day.

5.  Donations

Make a donation to a charity or cause on your teacher’s behalf!  SickKids Get Better Gifts are a great way to thank all the teachers and caregivers who help and support our children throughout the year – a great way to show appreciation, while also helping to brighten the lives of children!

Here are some other fabulous and creative ideas I found online:

6.  Educational materials

Teacher’s gift certificate at an online store like EducationStation.ca where teachers can buy educational materials. Or a gift card to the dollar store so they can stock up on school materials.

7.  S’mores Basket

Buy a package of graham crackers, marshmallows and a large milk chocolate bar and wrap it all up as a gift – perfect for summer!  Great idea from TheRachelBerryBlog.   You can add a note saying, “We need s’more great teachers like you!”

What’s cuter than a gift set for the beach? Buy a tote bag and fill it with a magazine, sunscreen, beach towel and voila – a creative gift idea from Skiptomylou.org.

If you don’t have time or money to buy each teacher a gift, please do consider having your child create a handmade card – teachers really do appreciate a heartfelt note from their students!

Happy Summer!

by Vera Orsini

Sometimes I don’t like Twitter and the whole online scene.  I get sad when I see great friendships.  Not that there is anything wrong with these great friendships – it’s just that I’m not a part of them.

Let me back up for you.  I used to be quite active on Twitter.  I loved, and still love the online world.  The comradery, the laughs, the Twitter parties! (The feeds on those go so fast!)

There was also sadness.  I remember over a year ago when I started reading about @tjzmommy and her son Zack.  I remember when another passed away.

I started a blog, and thought about things I wanted to write about.  Things that would inspire, create laughter, and maybe a few tears.  I wanted to talk more about losing a child, more about caring for an ailing spouse at such a young age, more about smiling through the hard times, and much more about laughing hard through the good.  I think I would have been a pretty good online presence if I do say so myself.

Life happened though.  It happens to all of us in different ways.  You work more.  You have less time to try and reach your passion.

Your time is spent caring for children.  Your time is spent rushing to a specialist appointment for your husband after work when all you want to do is crash.

Your time is playing with your child who you don’t see as much because you have to work outside of the home full time.  Your time is meeting a deadline (oh statistics – how you are the bane of my existence).

Your time is playing catch in the front yard with your child at 8pm to make up for missing their afternoon school recital – even though you have no clue which end of the baseball bat you are supposed to hold. (Side note: sports were never my forte).

Your job is demanding.  Your family needs you.

I stopped my blog.

I don’t begrudge anyone their time online.  It is a great place.  Friends, networking and business opportunities – just to name a few of the benefits.

I think I just wanted to say, if you notice someone tweet you haven’t seen in a while, tweet back.  They may have disappeared due to so many reasons.

Reach out and make them feel a little less isolated in a world where voices sometimes get lost in the timeline.

Father’s Day is this Sunday!

What will you do for that special dad in your life?  Wondering what to do for dad for Father’s day or what to get dad for Father’s Day?

We have some ideas for you that won’t break the bank… along with some splurge ideas if you have the cash to spend!

For the Foodie:

Make him a hearty breakfast.

I’m talking steak or sausage and eggs. And bacon, lots of bacon.  The way to a man’s heart is his stomach, didn’t you know that?

You can also buy him a grilling set with an apron and grilling utencils.

Or if you have a few bucks to spend, a new barbeque.

For the Jock:

Let him watch sports all day, if he’s into sports of course. Provide beer and snacks. He’ll be ever so grateful.

If you can splurge, buy him tickets to a game.

For the Executive:

Have the kids to decorate the cover of a notebook, calendar or agenda.  If you have some extra money to spend, splurge on a round of golf or cuff links.

For the Handyman:

You can’t beat a gift card to Home Depot.

father's day gift ideas

For the Tech Dad:

Anything electronic, obviously! Depending on how much you can afford, any high-tech gadget will make him happy such as a new Samsung Galaxy 4 phone or a new iPad case.

For the Urban Dad:

A manicure and pedicure. Seriously, guys love to be pampered too but they just don’t tell you.

For the Book Worm:

A gift card to the local bookstore is always appreciated.

Happy Father’s Day Dad!

Q:  Now that summer is  here, how do I prepare my young children for long outings/road trips?
Dr. G:

Great question! I just travelled 1,100 miles in the car alone with my 4 boys (ages 10, 7, 5 and 3) over Memorial Day weekend. I’m often asked for tips for family road trips with young kids.

So here it is, my best list for ways to get kids 6 and under ready for and to enjoy long car trips:

1.  Clean out the car together! Everyone except babies can help. So put the pack-n-play outside by the car, plop the baby in and get everyone else armed with garbage bags and rags. Take out all the car seats you can, fold down seats, yank out the mats, pull the vacuum outside if your kids can handle the noise.

Give them a spray bottle of vinegar and water. Get the dashboard, the inside doors, the cracks and spaces and “underneaths.”  This will give you a new lease on driving and your kids a sense of pride in the car itself. Don’t forget to put the car seats back in securely, maybe even stop by your local police or fire station for a car seat check before you go.

2.  Decorate a little. Spend some time surfing the web (yes, I’m telling you to – enjoy!) looking at posts about products that make life simpler in the car. A couple of storage boxes, an over-the-seat organizer, some great window stickers will help all of you feel more at home in the car.

3.  Plan a “Trial Trip” to someplace fun but not so far away. Make a packing list with your older young kids for the car. They will LOVE to pack their own stuff in a fun suitcase or backpack. Wheels help so they can help you load up! See what goes well and what needs work.

4.  Decide on your media policy. We do DVDs in the car. Our rule is the DVD player goes on if the trip is longer than an hour. Each kid gets to pick one DVD and then we take a screen-break. During that break we play games, or someone (who doesn’t get carsick) reads a book for the group. Or we jam to the radio.

5.  Gather games. There are games that any child old enough to talk can play. Endless varieties of the alphabet game and the license plate game really do work (and teach). We play some other games, like “What DON’T you want to be when you grow up?” and “If I could live in another country it would be…”

6.  Plan your trip with more stops than you think you’ll need. Bring a ball or some jump ropes or sidewalk chalk or bubbles. Our “Rest Stop Box” is really helpful and burns off quite a bit of energy with a soccer game or follow the leader.

7.  Pack a cooler and a snack box. This is a great way to save money and go farther. Make sure there is stuff for you as well as the kids, and stuff they can open without too much help. Prepare some bottles or sippy cups if that is what you need!

8.  Be flexible. And patient. The trip is supposed to be fun too!

Happy travels!

Here some fun things to do around Vancouver in June and July 2012:

Vancouver Aquarium:

New penguin exhibit open!

Meet the new African penguins. Come see them at Penguin Point, the new penguin exhibit between Wild Coast and Canada’s Arctic exhibits.

Penguins are birds that do not fly.  Enjoy making penguin-themed crafts and many family activities. Staff and volunteers will be available to answer all of your penguin questions!

Greater Vancouver Zoo:

For this year are: July 7th, July 21st, August 11th and August 25th, the Zoo is offering a special evening for you and your family to experience sleeping overnight at the Zoo in the picnic area right next to where the night animals live!

Once night falls, the guides and volunteers will take you on a walking journey through the Zoo to see the animals. This night also includes hot chocolate and marshmallows while listening to stories, play games and/or sing songs (guitars are even welcome).

You might not get much sleep as you will hear the lions roaring and wolves howling. Friendly birds will make sure you are awake in the morning!

After breakfast (provided), you will meet a Zookeeper.  You will enjoy a narrated train ride around the perimeter of the zoo as well.

Italian Heritage Month (June):

Vancouver kicks off the summer season with Italian Day on Commercial Drive, a day of free fun with Italian food, fashion, entertainment, games, and Euro Cup 2012 festivities that will be a fun street fair for all ages.

Commercial Drive (once known as Little Italy) is where you can see and eat in a large number of Italian restaurants and delis.
