Do you have a large-screen TV in your home? Chances are, you do.

Did you know?

In a 2011 report, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) revealed that a child is killed every three weeks from TV instability, and that an estimated 20,000 people are treated in the ER every year due to injuries from tipping TVs.

Making the home a safe environment is a concern of every parent, but hazard proofing for TVs is often overlooked because most people are unaware of this danger.

TVsafety.org is a consumer awareness website that was created to educate the public on this growing danger and present safe solutions to protect families. Their goal is to help to reduce TV-related injuries and create a safe environment for all to enjoy.

tv safety, wall mounts, TV Safety organizationThe safest option is to mount your flat-panel TV which is quite easy to do. You can install in a few steps with common household tools, such as a stud finder to locate studs in the wall (where the mount will secure to), a drill and a screwdriver.

A safety strap can also help prevent serious injuries from happening. Simply secure one end of the safety strap to your TV and the other to the wall and you can easily minimize serious injuries.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 is a mix of crazy, violent, funny and – makes fun of itself. Finally the series acknowledges its own absurdity… or as some would rather say, fantasy. Or maybe it didn’t but it was so over-the-top that you think it was planned all along.

Bella (Kristen Stewart) has now married vampire Edward (Robert Pattinson) and given birth to a beautiful child. Bella is a vampire for the first time, discovering her ‘newborn’ self and unique talents. Now, she can enjoy amazing strength and unstoppable speed – and discovers her unique gift, shielding others.

For the first time in Twilight history, Stewart is actually bearable to watch. Perhaps it was the coloured contact lenses that Stewart wore that finally put a twinkle in her eyes when she delivered her lines?

Jacob (Taylor Lautner) now has a permanent fixture in Bella’s life – he has “imprinted” on Bella’s newborn daughter, , which means he will protect and love her forever and ever and ever. And ever.

Both romantic and creepy. Oh and did I mention that Lautner not only took off his shirt but he stripped down to his underwear?! The audience squealed in delight. Ladies, remember Lautner is only 20?!

When the Volturi catch on that this child exists, the Cullens feel threatened and travel the world to find their other vampire friends to help them with their army. The multi-cultural vampire posse descends upon Cullen territory, awaiting the epic confrontation with vampire royalty and law-makers, the powerful Volturi.

It all leads up to the dramatic standoff between the Cullens, along with the werewolves, and the Volturi.

The Cullens try to convince the Volturi that Renesmee is not immortal. Alice shows a vision of the future but the Aro, the leader of the Volturi, played by the brilliant Michael Sheen, is not convinced.

In a shocking move, the war begins. It was the best action scene in the entire series. Be prepared for violence and blood – oh wait, the cold ones don’t have blood!

I won’t reveal the twist but it reminds me of a scene from a soap opera… very dramatic and yet you can’t help but snicker. I caught myself chuckling throughout the movie, at some of the lines as well as some of the over-the-top cheesiness and self-mockery. It was the perfect send-off to the series.

Rated PG-13 Running time: 115 minutes.

Who is People’s sexiest man alive?

The 2012 Sexiest Man Alive is…. Channing Tatum.

Channing Tatum, sexiest man alive,

Sigh. Drool.

Did they get it right? I think they made the perfect choice this year!  The fact that Tatum bared it (almost) all for his role in the movie, Magic Mike, had absolutely nothing to do with it… right?

The hunky actor is playing an Olympic athlete in next year’s Foxcatcher and has been training to get his body in perfect, muscular form.

On his fitness regimen:

“I like to be lean. If I get too bulky I can’t move well and I like to move,” he says. “When I’m not training, I get really round and soft.”

Well thank you Channing, thank you very much.

amotherworld had the pleasure of being invited to Orlando, Florida to visit fun family attractions, other than the theme parks! We sent Ariane Griffiths with her son, Ben. Read on about their travels and watch a video of their amazing trip:

by Ariane Griffiths

When most Canadians think of Orlando, Florida, they automatically think of the traditional theme parks. But, as I recently discovered when I traveled to Orlando with my seven-year-old son, Ben, Orlando is so much more and is filled with amazing sights that are not on the usual family vacation itinerary.

Lake Buena Vista Resort and Spa
Lake Buena Vista Resort and Spa

Our home base was the gorgeous Lake Buena Vista Resort and Spa and home it felt, indeed. The hotel offers a standard two bedroom, two bathroom suite complete with all the amenities of home such as a dishwasher, fridge, stove, microwave and even a stacked washer and dryer! All linens, utensils and even cleaning necessities could be found in this spacious suite which is so convenient for families on vacation. We unpacked our bags from the flight and headed straight for the big pirate boat pool located right on the hotel grounds.

The next day, we woke bright and early and made our way to the hidden shores of Boggy Creek Airboat Rides for our first adventure! We met Boggy Creek guides Chad and Leslie to board our own private airboat and set about searching for gators. These awesome boats had us careening through reeds, climbing mid-marsh islands and cutting through the wake with no effort at all. The fact that the propeller is above water level allows these boats to go almost anywhere and Ben and I saw a ton of beautiful flora and fauna, and wildlife — from birds to fish and even those elusive gators!

Gatorland Orlando
Ben zip-lining at Gatorland   Photo: Caryn Reed

Our next stop was Gatorland. Our guides whisked us to a small room where we were outfitted and trained to zip-line before we made our way to one of seven zip line towers and the long climb to the top. Our tour took us high above sights like a gator breeding marsh and even a little mini jungle where the gators roamed free. Initially, Ben and I weren’t sure about this adventure because neither of us had ever zip-lined before but the guides really made us feel safe and secure and we ended up having a fabulous time.

We left from the towers and made our way through the jungle and saw the rest of Gatorland. With white alligators, baby alligators and big jumbo alligators mixed in with a large variety of birds, there were so many neat things to see and learn about. A quick stop to feed the alligators and we were on our way to the next location.

Twenty minutes away, we arrived at iFly Orlando for a crash course on indoor skydiving. We met with our instructor, Kaz, who took us through a 45-minute training on what to do, positions to learn and how to handle our bodies in the wind tunnel. We donned some fashionable jumpsuits and headed into an enclosed room just outside of the actual wind tunnel. Our group consisted of eight people whose ages ranged from seven to mid-forties…our instructor told us that someone aged 99 had recently flown and had a blast!

I took my first turn in the wind tunnel and have to admit that it was pretty freaky. You think you know what to expect but the power of the wind is overwhelming. I got my bearings and think I had good form, and then my turn was over. Ben took his turn next and flew like a champ! With our first tries under our belt, the second round was sure to be easy. For our second turn, Kaz actually held onto us and we did a tandem fly. He lifted us high up into the tunnel and it really felt like we were flying!

Our first day of finding hidden gems and unexpected places in Orlando was like no experience we’ve had before. Tired from all the fun my son and I had, we set back to the hotel for dinner and a swim in the Pirate pool.

With the first day as our intro to Orlando, Ben and I figured we couldn’t possibly find anything that would be just as exciting – boy, were we wrong!

The next day started out at Orlando HeliTours where we met Al the Pilot and jumped into a helicopter for a breathtaking flight over the city. Al narrated the trip, pointing out a wide variety of sights like golf courses, theme and water parks and even showed some of the Disney stops. It was a quick flight – nine minutes can cover a lot of area and before we knew it, we were back on the ground talking about all of the neat things we saw. Of course, Ben was really interested in the actual ground sights but he just loved the flight part!

We then headed to the Orlando Premium Outlets where we stopped for some lunch and did a bit of shopping. I picked up a few things for Christmas because the deals were so great. We couldn’t stay too long – Ben was getting anxious to move onto our next adventure but not before stopping to get some ice-cream!

The final stop on our trip turned out to be the biggest highlight: the interactive Pirates Dinner Adventure. Ben wants to be a pirate so it was only natural that he had packed a bandana and some pirate clothing in his luggage – he got all dressed up for the occasion!

We arrived in time for the pre-show, which set the stage for the rest of the night. We were told a story about how the Princess was kidnapped and taken aboard the pirate ship and were then led into another room where a full-size ship was waiting. I couldn’t believe that an entire ship was in this room!

Ben and I were some of the lucky audience members chosen to take part in the action-filled show as part of the cast! Ben was recruited to be the next generation of Pirate on the Captain’s team and I was a villager who had to hand over the treasure to the Captain as a payment for keeping our village safe.  Guides told us what to do and we didn’t have to memorize any lines but the hands-on interactivity of this show was phenomenal; I truly thought Ben was going to explode with excitement! After the show we were treated to a wonderful meet and greet with the Captain and his wife, Treasure and, because it was the last show of the night, there was an after-show dance party!

Our time in Orlando, Florida was fabulous, I cannot wait to go back and do them again! If you’re looking for fun, family-friendly alternatives or additions to the theme parks, these activities are absolutely perfect. More importantly, my son had the best time – he loved every minute and is already asking, “Mom, when can we go back?”

The trip (flight, hotel, etc.) to Orlando was covered by Visit Orlando, however, the opinions herein are completely my own.

Lighten up!  Kick up your heels and laugh – it’s actually good for you!

Growing research supports the theory that laughter may have therapeutic value.

Over the years, researchers have conducted studies to explore the effect of laughter on physical wellness.  After evaluating participants before and after a humorous event (ie. a comedy video), studies revealed that episodes of laughter helped to reduce pain, decrease stress-related hormones and boost the immune system in participants.

Medical journals have acknowledged that laughter therapy helps to improve the quality of life for patients with chronic illnesses. Many hospitals now offer laughter therapy programs as a complementary treatment to illness. Pretty amazing, isn’t it? Laughing is good for you!

Here are some ways to get yourself laughing:

Watch a funny movie or TV show

Tell some good jokes and share some funny stories with friends

Go to a comedy club

Now go and seek something funny!  Just don’t make anyone trip and fall.

He’s done it again.

Showing off his assets, making ladies swoon.

David Beckham is posing in his underwear again for H&M’s holiday campaign.

The soccer star shared the pics on his Facebook page. He wrote: “Thought you’d like to see some of my new H&M Holiday campaign shots.”

Well thank you, David! It’s just what I needed today.

Hope your wife, Victoria, doesn’t mind that millions of women are also drooling over those shirtless shots of you.

Enjoy!

Need more Beckham? You know you do…

Do your kids eat all their lunch?

As soon as my kids come home from school, I check their lunch bags to see if they’ve eaten all their food. Usually my 5-year-old comes home with uneaten food. As for my 8-year-old — his lunch bag returns empty but I wonder if he’s eaten all of it.

So I wasn’t surprised to see the results of a recent Hellmann’s study which revealed that Canadian children might have a few secrets when it comes to their lunch time habits.

More than two thirds (72%) of Canadian parents who were polled believe that their children do not throw away lunch items while almost a third (31%) of Canadian children admit they throw out some of their lunch! Nearly half (46%) of the kids trade some of their lunch items with friends regularly.

A-ha! So that’s what happening with their lunch – just as I suspected! Time to get creative when making your kids’ lunches.

Celebrity chef Chuck Hughes has some sandwich-making tips for weary parents which will hopefully entice those picky eaters to finish their lunches!

I love coming across new products to try – and love it even more when I’m given the opportunity to try some of them out first-hand!

Here are some of my favourite new beauty and self-care products right now:

This refreshing body scrub by GRATiAE exfoliates and cleanses the skin, leaving you feeling invigorated and revitalized. It accelerates blood circulation and leaves your skin refreshed and soft. The body butter has a light scent (I don’t like heavy perfumes) and makes my skin feel so incredibly smooth.

Premier Hand and Nail Care products are designed as an invigorating beauty treatment for your nails to prevent roughness and cracking while nourishing and protecting your hands and nails. I rarely get out for a manicure these days so this kit is great to have, especially the cuticle therapy.

Peptalash naturally improves the appearance of lash length, darkness and volume to make eyelashes appear longer, thicker and fuller. I tried it out and although my eyelashes are already on the longer side, I did notice they were thicker.

The Original Makeup Finishing Spray by Skindinavia sets and holds makeup in place. Keeps color vibrant and prevents makeup from fading for up to 16 hours. Recommended for normal to combination skin types. Kept my makeup on all day without smudging.

Sea buckthorn leaves and flowers are used for treating many medical conditions and ailments. Sea buckthorn berries are used for preventing infections, improving sight, and slowing the aging process. Now they have several products from supplements to creams.

SLIP Detangler is a silicone free leave-in conditioner that will instantly loosen hair knots, lock in hair color and eliminate flyaway hair without adding any weight. It makes my hair feel smooth and takes away much of the frizz.

After a night of dancing, you’d love to slip out of those heels and into a pair of flats, right?  These flexible faux leather Flats-to-go ® are an instant solution – keep them in your purse for those moments when your feet need a rest!
