Happy New Year!
If you’re reading this, I wish you a healthy, joyful, and peaceful 2026. As a new year begins, many people choose a Word of the Year for 2026 to guide their intentions and decisions.
A Word of the Year is a meaningful theme word you can return to throughout the year—something that grounds you in where you are now and gently points you toward where you want to be. Instead of rigid resolutions, this single word becomes a source of clarity, focus, and motivation as 2026 unfolds.
During holiday seasons in years past, I would always set aside time to reflect on the previous year, as well as earlier years. I considered both the personal and professional highlights, as well as the challenges I faced along the way. Extra family time includes reminiscing about Christmases past, sharing stories and memories that help us reconnect with where we’ve been. Reflecting on the past creates space for a clearer path forward, allowing us to recognize unhealthy patterns, learn from past mistakes, and move into the future with greater awareness and intention.
With all of these insights and lessons learned, I choose a Word of the Year to represent what I want the new year to bring. While traditional New Year’s resolutions are often difficult to maintain, selecting a yearly theme word offers a more meaningful and sustainable approach to goal-setting. A Word of the Year helps clarify your intentions, serves as a personal mantra during moments of uncertainty, and gently brings you back into alignment when you lose focus or drift off track.
It’s interesting to look back at some of my theme words over the past 10 years:
2014 – flourish
2015 – focus, be, leisure
2016 – nurture
2017 – manifest
2018 – clarify, courage, celebration
2019 – pivot
2020 – open
2021 – grounding
2022 – grounding* though I didn’t write a new word, the word ‘grounding’ trickled into 2022
2023 – cultivate
2024 – healing
2025 – regenerate and explore
How do you choose a theme word of the year?
Choosing a Word of the Year can feel daunting, especially when you’re trying to find a single theme word that truly reflects what you hope to be, do, and accomplish in the year ahead. What one word best captures the overall mood, mindset, or energy you want to embrace in 2026?
With a bit of intentional reflection, you may discover one powerful word — or even a few, as I did in 2018 — that naturally rise to the surface. Take time to explore both your personal and professional goals for the coming year. Consider the emotions you want to cultivate and the values you want to live by. As you reflect, notice whether any recurring themes, patterns, or guiding ideas begin to emerge — they often point you directly to your ideal theme word for the year.
Where do you see yourself in the future?
Now that you’ve chosen your theme word, what’s next?
After choosing your Word of the Year, create a visual reminder to keep your theme front and center. This could be a vision board, a desktop wallpaper, or a phone background featuring your theme word prominently. Vision boards are especially powerful because the process of searching for and selecting images that reflect your goals and intentions helps bring clarity and emotional connection. Often, you don’t fully know what you’re seeking until you see it visually—making this exercise both insightful and motivating.
Another effective option is to set a daily reminder on your phone using your theme word, paired with an inspirational or motivational message if it resonates with you. These small, intentional prompts reinforce your commitment to your theme word of the year and help you stay focused, aligned, and mindful of your intentions as the year unfolds.
Word of the Year 2026
I had every intention of setting a word for this year but then I received some unexpected news just after the new year rang in. It was a temporary setback but also created a huge shift in my mindset, something I could’ve never anticipated at this time. You know when you have a set plan in your mind but something completely derails it? You must be able to adjust and pivot to accommodate the sudden change, whether you like it or not. You have no choice but to accept and move on. For me, this also came with a profound shift in my thinking, something I haven’t experienced in a long time. A light-bulb moment of knowing and understanding. While I didn’t choose a word for myself, I know this year I am prioritizing myself.
