Just when you think you’re done with diapers and potty training, your child can’t stay dry during the night. Is this normal?

Bed-wetting or night time wetting is a normal part of a child’s development. Also known as nighttime incontinence or nocturnal enuresis, your child may still be developing nighttime bladder control. It may take years before your child can stay dry all night long.

Nighttime wetting can be embarrassing for a child and overwhelming for a parent. You’re not looking forward to washing yet another set of sheets, and your child hates waking in the morning feeling embarrassed and ashamed.

For some, nighttime wetting may be an inevitable part of growing up, but it doesn’t have to be distressing. Through education and a few simple tips, you can help ease the stress of nighttime wetting for both you and your child.

I had the opportunity to learn more about nighttime wetting with GoodNites® at Great Wolf Lodge, a topic that our family has had to deal with too!  Michele Kambolis, clinical therapist and mental health specialist also spent some time showing play-based activities to help ease the stress and anxiety associated with nighttime accidents.

More common that you think

Did you know that nighttime wetting is more common than you think? In fact:

  • Up to 15% of five-year-olds and 8% of 8-yearolds experience nighttime wetting
  • There’s a 77% chance that a child will wet the bed if both parents did as a child
  • Nighttime wetting is more common in boys than girls
  • While children generally achieve some level of nighttime dryness by about four years of age, accidents can happen even into puberty

Children who continue to wet the bed beyond the age of 6 may not be producing enough ADH hormone at appropriate times or may not yet be attuned to their bodies’ signals, or both.

What can you do to help your child with nighttime wetting?

The best thing you can do for your child is provide them with the tools they need to cope with nighttime wetting. Here are some ways you can help:

Be supportive

Help your child understand that nighttime wetting is not their fault, that bodies develop at different rates and it’s something that will pass. I found that having your pediatrician speak directly to your child about the facts, can help tremendously.

Find ways to talk about the condition to eliminate the ‘secrecy’ that goes hand-in-hand with nighttime wetting. For example, start talking about it with your child during the daytime when there are no accidents to help open up a dialogue and decrease the embarrassment.

Monitor fluids

Make sure to monitor fluid intake before bedtime; two glasses of water right before bed might not be a good idea!  Encourage one or two extra glasses of water in the morning or afternoon, allowing evening drinks to quench thirst only.

Develop a routine

While it may not be easy or effective for parents to wake children during the night, routine bathroom visits may prevent them from unintentionally holding their urine. Make sure kids empty their bladder right before bed.

Overnight comfort

If your child is dry all day but sometimes has nighttime accidents, GoodNites® Bed Mats are a great choice. Specially designed to be worn lying down, they’re plush and super absorbent to help keep kids dry and comfortable all night, no matter what sleep position they prefer. Plus, the discreet design looks and feels like regular underwear with graphics that children won’t mind wearing.

For older kids, GoodNites® TRU-FIT Underwear provides real-washable, underwear-like discretion. Working in tandem with absorbent inserts, its soft fabric underwear with disposable protection that keeps your sons sheets and PJs dry all night.

GoodNites® Bed Mats are also helpful to keep parents from having to wash and change sheets often. All you do is place, peel and protect for a better night, every night.

Waterproof mattress covers are also helpful, to protect your mattress from possible leakage.

What about older kids?

As kids become older, a bed-wetting alarm can help. Enuresis alarms sound in response to wetness, and they have a cure rate of 75%, according to a study published in the journal Pediatric Psychology. There is also medication as a ‘last resort’, however expensive, to help once children are older and want to enjoy sleepovers.

Water park with big water slides?! Oh yeah! My kids were super excited to get to Great Wolf Lodge Niagara Falls and with good reason! As we entered the place, they were immediately impressed by the size of this indoor water park and lodge in Niagara Falls, Ontario. I knew right away that it would be great fun for kids at Great Wolf Lodge Niagara Falls.

Great Wolf Lodge Niagara Falls Ontario is a family-friendly resort with activities and amenities for kids of all ages. It has a kids’ club, arcade games, mini-golf, and other activities to keep kids busy. It has a massive indoor waterpark filled with thrilling water slides, wave pools, lazy rivers, and other enjoyable water activities. The waterpark is popular because it offers a fun and exciting experience for both adults and children.

Here’s why Great Wolf Lodge Niagara Falls is great fun for kids — and adults too!

Checking in.

Although there were quite a few people in the lobby, along with some talking animals, the check-in was quick! Staff were very friendly too. We were given wristbands to use during our stay, which would open the hotel room door and also charge meals and gifts to the room, if needed.

Our room.

We stayed in a themed KidCabin suite on the third floor, a bit of a walk from the elevator. But it’s probably a good thing to have a room further away as the hallways can become noisy because of the Magi-Quest game and kids running down the halls to complete the game! The lodge is only four floors so you can easily take the stairs as the elevators will be busy with families with strollers.

Our suite had a bunk bed and an extra single bed in one area, and a double bed and couch with fireplace separate. Of course my kids loved that they had their own room with bunk beds! It was a great, spacious room which also had a mini-fridge, microwave, safe and coffee maker. I could see how helpful these amenities would be for younger families, especially if you bring some of your own food and drinks to the hotel. The hotel is “green” so the bathroom offers shampoo and body wash in a dispenser in the shower and by the sink, so you may want to bring your own with you.

The water fun.

The kids had a blast with the swimming pools and water slides. There are lifeguards everywhere so it’s quite safe. You should get there early, however, to claim your chairs and tables as the water park does get very busy. The larger water slides also had a bit of a wait.

There are different areas within the water park – the larger water slides on one side, the lazy river on the other, a wave pool in the centre, and another pool on the other side. I will say the park is packed but not extremely insane. It’s very loud in there as well so if you’re traveling with older folks, maybe bring some ear plugs!

The food.

You aren’t allowed to bring in outdoor food into the water park but they do offer some food bars, including Grizzly Rob’s Bar and Spirit Island Snack Shop right I the water park. There are other options for food, including Northwoods Pizza Company where you can take out a pizza and eat in your room. For tired parents, there is the Canoe Coffee shop and Bear Claw Café for desserts.

The Antler Shanty is a restaurant in the lodge by the lobby which offers buffet meals – definitely worth a visit. We had dinner there and the kids went to town! Because of my food sensitivities, I spoke to the sous chef who was very helpful – he managed to make me a separate meal to ensure there was no gluten and soy in my food. I was very impressed by the extra attention and the food was delicious. He also brought me vegan chocolate cupcakes for dessert! My son loved the waffles and the made-to-order omelets for breakfast the next morning.

Other fun.

After dinner, the kids went to check out the story time, which was jam packed and very popular with the younger kids. Afterwards, there was a dance party but we decided to visit the arcade. A $20 card can allow the kids to play quite a few games, which I thought was worth the price. We didn’t get a chance to visit the bowling alley though! The kids also had fun playing MagiQuest, a unique fantasy-themed scavenger hunt that takes kids on a journey throughout the resort. The wand not only makes a great souvenir, kids can use it when they come back to the lodge to play again.

When you do check out, remember you can still stay at the water park for the rest of the day. You can pack your luggage in the car and then put your smaller items into a locker for the remainder of your visit. Next time, I’ll be sure to ditch the kids so I can visit the adult-only hot tub and the Elements Spa Salon for a little “me” time!

Five Reasons Why Great Wolf Lodge is Great and Not So Great

Written by Cathy B.

If hopping on a plane or taking a long road trip seems like anything but fun to you, opting for a local vacation might be your ticket!

I love that Great Wolf Lodge in Niagara Falls, Ontario is family-friendly, a decent drive (if you live near the Golden Horseshoe region), and you don’t have to worry about brushing your teeth with bottled water.

Of course, with every vacation, there are pros and cons. So, I’ve whipped up this list on why it’s a great destination vacation (and why it’s not).

What makes the Great Wolf Lodge so great?

1. You can bank on a weather-proof vacation.

Rain or shine, it doesn’t matter since the water park is indoors. Plus, if you go in the summer, the outdoor poolside creates the illusion you’re at a real resort (without the pina coladas – boooo).

2. Most girls get a kick out of pedicures.

After a day of looking at your wrinkled fingers and toes from all the water fun, nothing beats a scented ice cream themed pedicure and manicure to make you feel new again. Your teens (and teens at heart) will think you’re the coolest mom ever for treating them to a spa day!

3. Can’t get your kid out of the bathtub? Magnify that feeling 30X for them.

There’s everything from water roller coasters, slides, a giant splash pad, rafts, inner tubes, and lots and lots of pools. It beats rubber duckies, that’s for sure!

4. The basic rooms are spacious and clean.

Plus, every room includes a mini fridge as their standard at NO extra charge. So, you can rest assured that your baby bottles and bite-sized snacks are chilling while you’re chillin’.

5. Location, location, location.

You’re a pretty close drive to Niagara Falls so you can easily change up the scene. Go on, take that cheezy honeymoon you’ve always wanted… with your kids.

5 reasons to go to great wolf lodge

What makes the Great Wolf Lodge NOT so great?

1. It can be pretty pricey!

Make sure you check out discounts online before you book. I also brought some of my own cereal, milk, cold cuts, bread and drinks to get through snack time and quick meals. Yes, cheap is chic.

2. Bring your own Pack ‘n Play if you need a crib.

I asked for one from the front lobby and the one I got was so dirty, it should have been called “Puke and Play.” Nasty!

3. It’s pretty limiting if you have a toddler under the age of two.

There was one lame excuse they called water basketball with six children crying over one ball. No water toys + No small splash pad areas = Not a lot of fun for mom.

4. The bedtime story time in the lobby will put you to sleep.

Kids were asked to wear their pjs to the lobby. Cute, right? Well, not when you watch them sitting on a DIRTY carpet on the floor and then slip into bed in the same pjs. Secondly, a lady reading a story with one employee dressed in a king costume doing nothing is very once upon a time.

5. Look out for big buckets of water overtop.

Although the kids get all excited watching people get zonked by a random bucket of water splashing on their heads, I did not feel it was the safest thing for young toddlers/babies to try to catch their breath after swallowing unexpected water. There were no warning signs, so if you don’t know this when you first arrive, walk with your head up and mouth closed.  (A good trick to keep the kids quiet, btw).

In a nutshell, by the end of your trip, if you don’t feel this was the best compromise for your hot ticket to the Caribbean (and it’s not), then simply utter the words, “Non hablo ingles” to your kids if they ever suggest going again.

In my opinion though, if you’re looking for the kid in YOU to come out than this is “the” place to be. I definitely think it’s a must for every family to try at least once.  And believe me, your kids will thank you. Happy splashing!
