Parenting expert, Deborah Gilboa, M.D. aka “Doctor G” is a family physician, international speaker, author and TV personality. She developed the “3 R’s of Parenting” to empower parents to raise respectful, responsible, and resilient kids. She has guest posted on amotherworld before in the series, Ask Dr. G.

How exciting that Doctor G is now publishing her book! Get the Behavior You Want… Without Being the Parent You Hate!: Dr. G’s Guide to Effective Parenting
will be released September 10, 2014.

Here is an excerpt from Chapter 46:

I am a parenting expert on the four kids who live in my house. You? Are a parenting expert on the kids who live in your home! No one knows the kids you love better, or cares more about their welfare, than you do. Even better, you are perfectly placed to raise those kids up to be adults you genuinely admire. You guide their behavior and choices as they progress from toddler to teen.

But how do we actually do this parenting stuff? Well, I’ve nagged, yelled at, threatened, and guilted my children to try to get them to behave well. Not all of the time, and usually not on purpose, but, just like many parents, I’ve done all this and more. Not only do I feel really horrible about it afterwards, but (and here is the kicker) it doesn’t work.

In addition to 24/7 parenting our four boys, I am a family doctor. I am privileged to care for hundreds of families, most with young children and teenagers. I work with families facing true horrors like cancer or muscular dystrophy; families fractured by circumstance or action; families challenged by legal, financial, and emotional stressors. I have families that look “normal” or even “perfect.” Here is what I’ve learned:

Everyone struggles with parenting. Everyone.

Picture your kids grown into the adult children you’d like to visit in 25 years. That’s the prize, right? Adults you’ve raised that are a comfort to you, raising your grandchildren and leading interesting lives that you get to hear about and take some part in, but with most of the heavy lifting behind you. That’s the prize to keep in mind during your challenges. Think about raising an adult you will respect and like, and want to be around. What character traits, knowledge, and skills do children need to become those adults? How can you encourage them to be responsible enough to someday be financially independent? What lessons will help them respect themselves and others?

How can you guide them toward the resilience they will need when they are met by life’s challenges?

Be trustworthy.

Picture this future moment: Your child is a teen. At 15 he is at an after-the-game party and he realizes his ride home is drinking steadily. He knows you’ve told him that he can always call for a ride, no questions asked. Do you want him to believe you, and call? Or he might think, “They said that, but I doubt they meant it.” How can you jump into the future and convince your son to call? By giving him a time-out today.

I know this is a strange leap to make, but it’s how kids’ brains work. Every time a child faces a behavior decision, if he thinks about it at all, he will wonder: “If I do ______ what will my parents really do?”

Your job is to teach your child that you will do what you said, every time. You need to be the most trustworthy person in his entire life.

• “If you speak to me that way one more time, we’re going home.”

• “If you hit, I will not play with you.”

• “If you don’t do as I said, you have to sit on the bench.”

• “If you get off that bench, you’re going to your room.”

• “If you come out of your room again, I’ll cancel your birthday party.”

Make sure your threats are promises and keep your promises. Every time. When you give the consequence you said, you are teaching your child, “You can count on me.”

What about the great promises? Keep them!

• “I’ll be there for the spelling bee.”

• “I’m coming up to read you a story.”

• “I’ll play with you when I’m done on the phone.”

• “You’ll see me before bedtime, or I’ll call if there’s a delay.”

• “I love you no matter what.”

Parent Q: I often threaten something but then back down because it seems too harsh. How can I teach my son to listen without being mean?

Many parents tell me that they back off a promised consequence because they can’t stand to hurt their child that way. If, in your moments of frustration, you make threats that are huge or unreasonable, do a little preparation. Make yourself a list of reasonable consequences that will still make an impression on your son. That way you won’t grope for a punishment and say something you are later unwilling to implement. When you enforce a consequence, you are not showing your child “I’m mean.” You are proving to your child that he can trust you, no matter what.

It’s the back to school rush! For some of you who have already done your back-to-school shopping, kudos to you. I’m usually a procrastinator, waiting for last minute back to school shopping the weekend before school begins. Earlier than that for me and it cuts into my summer time!

Here are my favourite Back to School Essentials 2014.

Back to School Essentials 2014

Backpack

A good, sturdy backpack with plenty of storage options is essential for growing kids. The licensed character backpacks are cute when kids are in kindergarten but they don’t have enough space for books and they aren’t built to last. My favourite is the Dudley Fully Loaded Backpack – my son’s backpack from last year is still holding up! I also like the look of this backpack from Swiss Gear.

Back to School Essentials 2014 Back to School Essentials Swiss Gear Backpack

Lunch Box

There are so many options for lunch boxes out there, especially since many school are litterless. I love the idea of bento-type boxes but they just don’t work for my kids. I like The Fully Loaded Lunch Bag by Dudley. It has a strong durable handle, insulated interior, sturdy base and zipper and mesh pockets – five pockets for added storage capacity and organization.

Back to School Essentials

This Louis Garneau Extreme Rectangular Lunch Box in navy blue and green because it looks like it’s built to last. It has a grey insulated lunch box with front pocket top opening, removable plastic liner for easier cleaning and removable shoulder strap included. This one is available online at Staples.ca.

Back to School Essentials 2014

Pencils and Pens

When my son was learning to write, he had trouble holding the pencil properly and his fingers would slide down the pencil. It was enough of a challenge learning to hold the pencil, let alone learning to print letters! The BIC Kids line helps little fingers learn how to hold a pencil and write properly. The line includes a mechanical pencil, pen and stylus and they offer a unique guiding line to help position fingers correctly. They’re ergonomically designed for kids’ little hands – both left and right-handed.

Binders and Notebooks

Shopping for school supplies like binders, pencil cases and notebooks is always a treat because I end up buying supplies for myself too! School supplies by Hilroy, ave always been my favourite because of their colours and patterns.

Hilroy® Shape It Up™ Binder 1.5", Assorted Designs. Three assorted designs include strips, hearts and circles.

Running shoes

Kids will need a good pair of running shoes AND a clean pair of indoor shoes; velcro will come in handy for little ones while older kids can enjoy runners like these from Skechers.

The Skechers Skech Appeal line of sneakers are made in a smooth trubuck leather, synthetic and mesh fabric upper in a lace up athletic training sneaker with stitching and overlay accents. These shoes have a Memory Foam insole – do you have any idea how comfortable the Memory Foam is?! They’re like wearing your favourite comfy pair of slippers! Girls Skech Appeal – $63.

Back to School Essentials Skechers

My boys will look stylin’ in these skater style SKECHERS Vert 2 shoe. Smooth leather and perforated leather upper in a lace up athletic casual skate sneaker with stitching and overlay accents. Boys Vert 2, $56.

Water Bottle

Every purchase of a Me to We product makes a positive impact on the world by giving a gift in a Free The Children community overseas, like clean water, school supplies and healthy meals. Look for your unique impact code on every product, and enter it online at TrackYourImpact.com to see where in the world your life-changing gift was delivered. Available at Staples.

Pencil Case

Older kids will love this one! The Dudley Load N Lock Pencil Pod is a locking pencil case with resettable combination so you can protect your belongings from disappearing! My 10-year-old will love that his little brother won’t be able to “borrow” pens and markers from his pencil case any more!

What is on your back-to-school essentials list?

Having my boys home during the summer is wonderful yet chaotic. When they get along, they are best friends and brothers with so much love. But when they argue, they get nasty. They will bicker, taunt one another and then they start to get physical. How many time outs and fight break-ups have you had to endure this past summer?

Well the back to school countdown is on! The kids are going back to school, baby! I’m going to take a deep breath as I send them off on their first day of school. And then…
When the kids are back in school, I’m going to…

Sit and enjoy the silence. I’ve been hearing the noises of whining, complaining, Minecraft music, Geometry Dash techno/electronic music all summer long. And then when it gets too quiet…

Dance around the house with MY music blasted. I’ve had to listen to my kids’ tween Disney XD shows and Everything Is Awesome much more than usual, I thought my head would explode.

Enjoy a full cup of coffee without interruption.

Lay on the couch all by myself.

Take the longest bath ever.

Get my hair done! I haven’t had a hair cut in months.

Get a proper manicure and pedicure. My toes look like claws and my cuticles have taken over half of my toe nail. Not a pretty sight.

Haul my ass back to the gym. My body is soft and lumpy, need to tone up!

Make an appointment for a massage. That gift certificate I got for my birthday last year is still sitting on my dresser. About time I use it.

Print some photos. I have thousands upon thousands of photos that need to be uploaded, organized and printed.

Meet up with friends for coffee or lunch.

Go shopping! I need some fall clothing and I haven’t had a chance to shop for myself.

Take a long leisurely stroll in my fave neighbourhoods. I haven’t been able to window shop along Queen West, Bloor or Yorkville without being yanked away by a cute yet strong little hand.

Catch up on shows like True Detective and Ray Donovan during the day because the characters can cuss and swear and I don’t have to worry about keeping my finger on the mute button….

while eating a pint of coconut ice cream. And I won’t have to share.

Finally, I’m going to have enough time to recoup and miss my kids!

What, did you think I was that heartless?!

Snap back to reality and realize that work is still waiting for me, along with endless piles of laundry.

I haven’t had a soda or cola in over a year, maybe two. Until I tried Zevia, a soda that is naturally sweetened.

Did you hear that? Zevia is a sugar free soda that contains no calories, sugar or artificial sweeteners. Why am I hearing about this now?!

Zevia Zero Calorie Soda is sweetened naturally with a unique blend of high purity Stevia, Erythritol and Monk Fruit. Erythritol is a naturally-occurring sugar alcohol derived and is naturally found in small amounts in various plants, fruits and fungi, including mushrooms. Stevia is a sweetener and sugar substitute made from the leaves of the plant species Stevia rebaudiana. Monk fruit is notable for its sweetness, which can be concentrated from its juice. These natural sweeteners have a low glycemic impact so you don’t have to worry about blood sugar fluctuations as you can experience with sugar.

Zevia comes in 15 different flavors, including Cream Soda, Cherry, Grape, Ginger, Root Beer and more.

Zevia is asking, what makes you unique? What is your #ZeviaStyle?

Where do you shine? In the kitchen, the gym, at work, your favourite clothing store? With your kids? On vacation?

I tend to shine when I’m around my boys… and they’re not fighting! When we are having a fun time, giggling and cuddling.

25 Interview Questions to Ask your Child on the First Day of School on amotherworld

What an amazing way to start hockey season! I had the opportunity to attend the BioSteel hockey camp with my boys on August 21, 2014 thanks to Mazda Canada as a #MazdaFan.

The BioSteel hockey camp is an annual professional hockey training camp held over several days and ends with a four-team tournament. Players participate in both on and off the ice training pre-season.

There were four teams and the four captains were Michael Cammalleri of the New Jersey Devils (Red), Tyler Seguin of the Dallas Stars (White), Wayne Simmonds (Grey) and Michael Del Zotto of the Philadelphia Flyers (Blue).

Other players who attended and trained at the BioSteel camp: Brian McGrattan, The Subban brothers – P.K., Malcolm and Jordan Subban, Chris Stewart, Michael Latta, Brett Ritchie, Jay Harrison, TJ Galiardi, Michael Dal Colle, Devante Smith-Pelly, Paul Bissonnette, Josh Ho-sang, Max Domi and more prospects. Matt Nichol coached and Walter Gretzky was also behind the bench.

The boys loved being at St. Michael’s School College Arena in Toronto, spending the morning watching the tournament for the BioSteel cup. We waited around afterwards for some photo opps and autographs.

As news of Robin Williams’ death hit the internet last week, fans everywhere were left grieving over the beloved actor’s passing. His death has not only reminded us never to take time with our loved ones for granted, but it has also reminded us of the seriousness of untreated depression.

Williams had been depressed and in and out of treatment for some time. This news has saddened everyone who knew of or loved the actor. The news has also shed light on depression and how to help loved ones struggling with depression.

Many people around us today who are suffering from the same unfortunate condition. If you are worried that your child or someone you know and love may also be suffering from depression, here are four steps you should take.

Here are four ways you can help a loved one struggling with depression:

1. Recognize that Depression is Real

Real clinical depression is much more than just sadness or moodiness. Depression is a disorder that alters the chemicals in a person’s brains. People can’t just “snap out of it” or “get over it.” They aren’t just being downers, they aren’t being overly dramatic, and it isn’t their fault.

2. Get Educated

Depression is much more complex than it seems. Take the time to get educated about clinical depression, including its causes, risk factors, symptoms and treatments. This will help you to understand what your child is going through, to make decisions that are in your child’s best interest, and to seek out the best treatment for your child. Depression Hurts is  a good resource.

Four ways you can help a loved one struggling with depression

3. Be Understanding

While it may be impossible to completely understand what is like to be depressed if you haven’t been there yourself, that doesn’t mean you should try to understand. Ask your depressed love one what being depressed feels like to them, if you can get them to open up. Offer them extra love, support and grace. Try to avoid feeling hurt if they don’t want to hang out the way that they used to.

4. Help Them Seek Professional Help

Asking for help can be difficult for anyone, especially people suffering from depression. Your loved one may not they need help and not know how to ask, or they may not even realize they need help yet. While you can’t force anyone to get better, you can help them to take the steps they need to in order to get the treatment they need. Be prepared but initial resistance, but keep their best interests in mind.

Furthermore, if your loved one is threatening or implying suicide, get professional help immediately. Take them to the nearest emergency room, call the police, or dial an emergency suicide hotline such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-999-9999. Don’t worry about your loved one’s feelings at a time like this. Worry about saving their life.

Depression can be a scary thing, but ignoring it will not make it go away. Instead, follow these four steps to help your loved ones during their most difficult time. You may just save their life.

Travelling to new or familiar destinations, you always seem to come home with a new energy, inspiration and a renewed sense of self.

When you travel you are constantly adapting to your surroundings and you have to try new things that you usually wouldn’t try. You realize how flexible and spontaneous you can be when you’re out of your regular routine and your comfort zone.  I think travel makes you more open with others and more importantly, with yourself.

But before heading out on your vacation, you want to be sure you can travel with peace of mind. I don’t want to worry about anything other than having a good time when I’m traveling.

Here are some important things to remember for travel with peace of mind. How do you prepare for a trip so that you have peace of mind?

Research your destination

Do your research before booking your trip. Use sites like Trip Advisor, Hotels.com, Booking.com to get real reviews of hotels and restaurants. You want to ensure you’ve done the grunt work and research before leaving home so that hopefully there are no surprises. The last thing anyone wants is for something to go terribly wrong, to end up in a horrible place or hotel.

Have your documents up to date and accessible

Make sure your passport will be valid for six months after your trip. If you’re leaving the country with your children but without your spouse, make sure to have a letter of consent with you. Also make sure to leave a copy of travel documents and itinerary with a family member; scan copies and email them to yourself as well.

Make sure you’re covered

We always book travel insurance ahead of time, at least for medical and emergency. You don’t want to think that something could happen or a family member could become ill while on vacation but you need to be covered just in case. Even if it’s a simple visit to the emergency for a child’s ear infection, not having travel insurance could cost you thousands of dollars. Trip cancellation coverage is also something to consider.

Buy a cell phone data plan

Look into purchasing a data/roaming and long distance plan with your cell phone provider before traveling. I have heard stories of people coming back from vacation to a cell phone bill costing thousands of dollars. Do your research before leaving on your trip. Does the hotel offer free WiFi in your room? How much data will you need? It might be worth purchasing long distance and texts in your travel package too, rather than calling from the hotel.

Read the fine print

When booking your travel or activities at your destination, always check the fine print. If the vacation package looks too good to be true, it very well may be! Make sure to research the area you’re planning to travel – a 5-star might actually be a 2-star to your standards! Also, if you’re going to participate in any adventure or extreme sports such as scuba diving or zip-lining, check that the operators and instructors have legitimate qualifications and a good safety record first.

Are you driving?

Driving abroad? Make sure to familiarize yourself with the driving laws of the country you plan to visit. Will you need documentation? You may need  International Driving Permit, Will you need additional insurance? Do your research because every country may have different rules and regulations.

Bring your MasterCard

MasterCard is accepted in 210+ countries and territories, which is more than any other card. I’d much rather carry a credit card that is secure and safe rather than carrying large bills. Here are some more tips for money and travel.

Use the hotel safe for valuables such as you passport and ID cards, don’t carry them  all with you. In case you lose your wallet or in the event someone pick pockets you (it can happen!), at least you’ll have your valuables back at the hotel. Keep the phone number of the credit card company (both local and international phone numbers) with you so that in case your credit card is stolen, you can call right away to freeze the account.

Carry small bills with you – rely on your credit card for larger purchases knowing that it is secure and safe. Remember to call the credit card company before traveling so they don’t freeze your account when making purchases.

Having a MasterCard in your wallet is your best bet when traveling abroad or staying close to home. Your card is your travel partner because it’s convenient and gives you peace of mind whether you’re visiting a remote island or enjoying a staycation.

How do you travel with peace of mind?

How to Travel with Peace of Mind
