Koru Village Spa and Beach Klub Resort in Avon

Located in the heart of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, the Koru Village’s Adventure Resort serves as the epicenter for renewal of health and wellness on the Outer Banks. After a long day of sunbathing on the beach (soooo tiring!), or doing one of the many water activities in the area, getting pampered is a nice addition to a vacation.

Koru offers a spa, salon, fitness center, yoga studio, massage and more. I was treated to a lovely Swedish massage, which went by way too quickly!

My little ‘ole blog started as a blogspot blog, to a self-hosted blog created on Publisher (yes, can you believe?!), and graduated to a themed WordPress powered website.

amotherworld has attracted so many wonderful opportunities, and allowed me to connect with a multitude of talented people. I’m forever grateful and proud of the success of blogs, which gives anybody the opportunity to express their voice on their own small yet powerful slice of the internet.

While I am thankful for self-publishing, I’ve always wanted to have my book(s) published by a traditional publisher. So you can imagine my excitement to share the news that my first non-fiction book will be published!

“The Truth About Motherhood: What They Didn’t Tell You… About the First Year” will make its debut in September 2017! My book will be published by Familius, a boutique family-focused publisher based in California. As soon as I made the pitch, I felt like I had found the right home for my voice, and my book, which will be the first in a series!

Time to pop the champagne… er, open that bottle of Pinot Grigio rather, and have a toast!

Now, back to writing!

My book will be published

UPDATE: Oh Baby! A Mom’s Self-Care Survival Guide for the First Year will make its debut in May 2018!

Your baby is no longer – he/she is in college or university! When did this happen? Where did the time go?

While this milestone is one to celebrate and be proud of, you might be worried about the costs involved in your child’s post-secondary education. Tuition, housing, transportation, books… all of these things cost money. What are some ways university students save money?

I worked part-time while attending university, took transit and lived at home. I had a beat-up old car I drove on the weekends. My parents paid for half of my tuition and I paid for the other half with the money I earned. Fair deal? I am forever grateful to my parents for their assistance.

I remember first year of university and being handed applications for credit cards. It can be tempting to sign up with all of the major credit card companies, but it’s probably best to choose one. Credit cards can help build your credit score, and some offer points or cash back incentives. Do your research first before applying for one that suits your lifestyle.

I managed to save some money also by buying used books – just make sure they are not a very old edition, as text books are updated often.

What are some other ways university students can save money?

5 Ways University Students Can Save Money

5 Ways University Students Can Save Money

Get financial help

Did you know your children can lighten the financial burden with a scholarship or bursary. There’s a huge amount of financial aid out there if you know where to look. There are thousands of scholarships and bursaries provided by businesses, charities and foundations across Canada. LowestRates.ca has some helpful resources in their Back to School Money Saving Guide.

Coffee in a travel mug

Spending $5 a day on coffee quickly adds up to $100 a month.  Students can easily cut down this cost completely by making coffee at home and bringing it along in a stylish travel mug. I’m not saying you shouldn’t treat yo’self once a week to your double-shot-non-fat-lactaid-latte-with-a shot-of-hazelnut-whip-cream-and-a-drizzle-of-caramel!

Brown bag it

Same goes for lunch and snacks. With lunches costing about $10, students can potentially save $200 a month! LowestRates.ca offers some great money saving tips and helpful apps in their Back to School Money Saving Guide.

Take the transit

Yes it’d be fantastic to drive to school every day but parking, traffic, insurance and gas costs can quickly add up. Taking public transit will decrease costs, helping to save more money.

Live at home

Before you bite my head off, living at home with parents can help students save a ton of money. What a generous way to help your kids start their lives than allowing them to build their bank account. Now some of you will disagree with me. But I lived at home while attending university, and I was able to save a lot of money this way. If kids are away at college or university, sharing an apartment with roommates is also a good option, rather than living in residence.

How did you manage to save while in college or university?

Today is ! One favourite pastime of our childhood is now popular again with adults, prompting this post on the top 10 adult colouring books. Why are adult colouring books so popular?

Colouring has been said to be able to help adults achieve mindfulness and reduce stress. While some may turn to playing music or exercising to let off some steam, others find colouring as relaxing and therapeutic.

Psychiatrist Carl Jung encouraged his patients to colour as a way to help them express some of the deeper parts of their psyche, and to calm and center their minds. Some may argue creating your own piece of art is more effective in prompting creativity and mindfulness. However, others praise adult colouring books as inspiring their artistic side.

In honour of National Colouring Day, here are the top 10 adult colouring books:

Looking back at this past year, I feel like I have travelled more than I have in my entire life. While I’m staying grounded for the next few months thanks to my kids’ insane hockey schedules, I’m already thinking about our next trip(s) for next year (fingers crossed). But how to plan our vacation faster?

While we enjoy visiting Florida every spring, I’m tempted to try a new destination this year… even more tempted to take another trip to Europe. I’m also thinking about scooping my husband away for a long weekend getaway to the Caribbean, sans children. It would be the first time we’ve ever taken a trip without our kids – long overdue?!

Why don’t families or couples take vacations more frequently? For many, they simply can’t afford it – and some families think they can’t. The biggest expense for a family of four is the airline tickets.

Plan Your Next Vacation With Aeroplan Miles

BUT if collecting Aeroplan® miles helps to pay for those tickets, why wouldn’t you? It’s a no-brainer! Plan your next vacation with miles and you’ll be sipping margaritas in no time!

All you have to do is carry your Aeroplan® card to earn miles on your everyday purchases. Plus, you can earn miles twice when you pay with an Aeroplan®-affiliated credit card.

Where can you use your Aeroplan® card to earn miles faster for your next trip?

Costco

I don’t know about you, but every time I shop at Costco, I’m not walking out of there without spending $200. So if you earn 1 mile per $1 spent online at Costco.ca on select products, those miles add up! If you don’t have a Costco card, sign up for a new Costco Membership and register your account with Aeroplan.

SHOP.CA

While I do enjoy shopping in retail stores because I enjoy seeing products in person, I also like to shop after hours from the comfort of my couch. Aeroplan® Members can earn 1 mile per $1 spent year-round at SHOP.CA. Plus, earn 800 bonus miles on your first purchase of $99 or more.

Plan Your Next Vacation With Miles

ESSO

When it’s time to fill up, why not earn even more points by filling up at Esso. You can earn up to 3 Aeroplan® Miles for every $3 you spend at Esso stations – the higher the grade of gas, the more miles.

Volvo

Ok, if you’re in the market for anew vehicle and Volvo happens to be your choice, you can earn Aeroplan®miles through your entire auto journey. Earn 25,000 miles or more with the purchase or lease of a new Volvo and continue to earn miles throughout the life of your car! Here’s how else you can earn:

  • Test drive any new vehicle—earn 250 miles
  • After-sales service—1 mile per $1 spent
  • Parts and accessories—1 miles per $1 spent

Simply present your Aeroplan® Card when you visit your Volvo dealership. Earn a minimum of 25,000 miles with the purchase or lease of a new Volvo and continue to earn throughout its life cycle.

Aeroplan’s eStore

If you don’t shop with any of these brands, check out Aeroplan’s eStore which features over 100 retailers such as Apple Store Canada, Indigo.ca, Dell.ca, and Sears.ca from 10 different product categories including accessories, apparel, gift cards and more.  Members can shop online and earn at least 1 Aeroplan® Mile for every $1 that they spend and double that if they pay with one of the Aeroplan® affiliated financial cards.  Visit www.aeroplan.com/eStore for more details.

There is something so magical about the annual changing and eventual cascade of autumn leaves. It’s like the trees are weeping, tears falling in vibrant colours of scarlet, saffron and harvest gold. They bid adieu with a climactic ending, and a reluctant encore.

Here are some of my favourite first day of fall quotes:

Happy First Day of Fall Quotes

“It looked like the world was covered in a cobbler crust of brown sugar and cinnamon.”  ~ Sarah Addison Allen, First Frost

“Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.”  ~ Albert Camus

“Give me a land of boughs in leaf

A land of trees that stand;

Where trees are fallen there is grief;

I love no leafless land.”

~A.E. Housman

“And now, my poor old woman, why are you crying so bitterly? It is autumn. The leaves are falling from the trees like burning tears- the wind howls. Why must you mimic them?”  ~ Mervyn Peake, Titus Groan

“I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.”

~ L.M. Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables

“You expected to be sad in the fall. Part of you died each year when the leaves fell from the trees and their branches were bare against the wind and the cold, wintery light. But you knew there would always be the spring, as you knew the river would flow again after it was frozen. When the cold rains kept on and killed the spring, it was as though a young person died for no reason.”

“October’s Party

October gave a party;

The leaves by hundreds came –

The Chestnuts, Oaks, and Maples,

And leaves of every name.

The Sunshine spread a carpet,

And everything was grand,

Miss Weather led the dancing,

Professor Wind the band.”

~ George Cooper

“Autumn is the hardest season. The leaves are all falling, and they’re falling like

they’re falling in love with the ground.”

~ Andrea Gibson

“No spring nor summer beauty hath such grace as I have seen in one autumnal face.

[The Autumnal]” ~  John Donne

But then fall comes, kicking summer out on its treacherous ass as it always does one day sometime after the midpoint of September, it stays awhile like an old friend that you have missed. It settles in the way an old friend will settle into your favorite chair and take out his pipe and light it and then fill the afternoon with stories of places he has been and things he has done since last he saw you.” ~ Stephen King, Salem’s Lot

“Autumn…the year’s last, loveliest smile.”

[Indian Summer]”

~ William Cullen Bryant

“Love the trees until their leaves fall off, then encourage them to try again next year.” ~ Chad Sugg

Happy First Day of Fall Quotes

“At no other time (than autumn) does the earth let itself be inhaled in one smell, the ripe earth; in a smell that is in no way inferior to the smell of the sea, bitter where it borders on taste, and more honeysweet where you feel it touching the first sounds. Containing depth within itself, darkness, something of the grave almost.”

~ Rainer Maria Rilke, Letters on Cézanne

“I cannot endure to waste anything so precious as autumnal sunshine by staying in the house.”

[Notebook, Oct. 10, 1842]”

~ Nathaniel Hawthorne, The American Notebooks

“Her pleasure in the walk must arise from the exercise and the day, from the view of the last smiles of the year upon the tawny leaves and withered hedges, and from repeating to herself some few of the thousand poetical descriptions extant of autumn–that season of peculiar and inexhaustible influence on the mind of taste and tenderness–that season which has drawn from every poet worthy of being read some attempt at description, or some lines of feeling.”

~ Jane Austen, Persuasion

“The smell of burning firewood and the molding of organic, earthy substances reminded her of jumping wildly into the enormous leaf piles of autumns past and she suddenly wished that it was appropriate for someone her age to do such a thing.”

~ Abby Slovin, Letters In Cardboard Boxes

“Autumn carries more gold in its pocket than all the other seasons.”

~ Jim Bishop

“Is not this a true autumn day? Just the still melancholy that I love – that makes life and nature harmonise. The birds are consulting about their migrations, the trees are putting on the hectic or the pallid hues of decay, and begin to strew the ground, that one’s very footsteps may not disturb the repose of earth and air, while they give us a scent that is a perfect anodyne to the restless spirit. Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns.”

[Letter to Miss Eliot, Oct. 1, 1841]”

~ George Eliot

“Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.” ~ F. Scott Fitzgerald

There’s no place like home. I felt that way as soon as I entered my house after a month away. I missed my favourite couch, my comfy bed, and, yes, even my kitchen.

When you haven’t been in a space for a long time, it looks and feels different after you return. But it doesn’t take very long to ease back into that ever-so-comfortable familiar setting.

Home is where the heart is – the centre of your life and your family’s foundation. Even after a long day out at work, or a whirlwind weekend getaway, there is nothing more enjoyable than coming home.

Now with the seasons changing, I’m looking forward to baking and cooking my favourite comfort foods, like apple pie. Autumn wouldn’t be the same without apple picking, and preserving apple pie filling for the colder months ahead. Soon enough, Thanksgiving will be upon us, and the exotic scents of pumpkin spice, cinnamon, and spices like thyme and rosemary will warm up my kitchen.

I’ll welcome a mini-escape from the kids and the hockey rink where I can curl up with a book and enjoy a coffee in my favourite reading chair. Or a yoga “retreat” in my home office, with my favourite meditation music and hypnotizing incense.

But before I know it, I’ll be dreaming about my next beach vacation, the memories of the tropical breeze and whiffs of the sand and salty ocean flooding my mind. Sometimes I close my eyes, imagine the sun on my skin and smell the beach! While I’m not physically there, I know I can bring that atmosphere into my home with décor and similar scents – to remind me of my happy place.

Air Wick® Life Scents™ has some of those favourite scents that you can bring into your home, invoking those wonderful feelings and memories.

Mom’s Baking: Enjoy the aroma of caramelized pears with a hint of spice, baked inside a crumbly, buttery pie crust topped with cool vanilla cream. The fragrance creates a sense of coziness and inspires warm childhood memories at home.

Summer Delights: Transform your home into a garden on a beautiful, breezy summer evening with its cool, fruity, floral combination of fresh cantaloupe slices, white flowers, and vanilla ice cream.

Turquoise Oasis: Turn your home into a seaside retreat as a warm breeze carrying salty sea spray washes over you, bringing with it the invigorating aroma of weathered driftwood.

Sweet Lavender Days: Let the intoxicating aroma of endless lavender fields, layered with dewy summer berries and warm sugar cane, create a sense of comfort, freshness and relaxation in your home.

While it’s always bittersweet to see summer end, with Fall comes a new beginning. School routines are in full force, which means busier schedules. Fall routines and family movie nights are a fun way to kick up September.

As the cooler weather begins, weekend nights are the perfect times for family movie night. My kids love movie night – they look forward to popcorn, and snuggles with mom and dad on the couch. Get the kids even more excited by setting up a popcorn bar with yummy toppings, like chocolate , candy or pretzels.
