Celeb mama Lauren Bowles, the half-sister of Seinfeld star Julia Louis-Dreyfus, says that keeping things in balance is all about prioritizing.

Andrea MartinLegendary Emmy- and Tony-Award winning actress and comedienne Andrea Martin is bringing her hilarious new one-woman show, Final Days! Everything Must Go!! to Newmarket on Thursday, February 10th!

See your favourite SCTV characters, hear your favourite Broadway tunes and listen as Martin reveals way too much about her life, her career and her famous Hollywood friends.

The mom of two boys are now grown men Jack, 29, and Joe, 27, and work in music and entertainment.

Martin introduced her kids to music early on.  One of her son’s chose to play saxophone while the other learned the piano.  “It was a great gift. Intuitively I knew and wanted them to express themselves creatively and have an outlet.”Andrea Martin FINAL DAYS! EVERYTHING MUST GO!!

Her love for music paid off.  “We grew up in Toronto and I used to take them to the Toronto Symphony… to this day, they get their own subscription to the L.A. symphony and opera.”

Martin recently turned 64 and recalls what her sons did for her.  “On my birthday they both called me and said in 15 minutes, go on your computer and check your email.”   She did, and found a link to YouTube where her sons were in they were Jack’s Los Angeles apartment and they played the sax and piano to “When you’re 64” by the Beatles.

Martin also taught her children about giving back early on.  “We had a charity box and every time they had an allowance they put box money and at the end of the year, they would decide what charity to donate to.”

One of Martin’s fondest memories on SCTV was when she did a parody of the Lynn Redgrave sitcom on CBS, House Calls, which she had asserted she was forced off because she wants to breast-feed her 5-week-old daughter, on the set.

“I did a parody of show… we called it “Wet Nurse”.  I had huge breasts, where John Candy played my baby but he was 5 feet long and wide.  So I had my child on my breasts and he grew up into John Candy.”  Watch the funny video below.

When asked if she had any advice about raising kids, Martin said that if she could turn back time, she would enjoy being in the moment more.

“I wish that I wasn’t so anxious about things when my kids were young and wish that I had enjoyed the present moment.  Somebody told me when my kids were little, “be careful not to wish their life away”.  We tend to spend too much time in the future.”

how to deal with grief when you have kids, griefGrief by Danielle Christopher

The tears race down my cheeks uncensored. The shock allows the floodgates to open before I realize my four-year-old is watching me.

I warble out to my husband who is steps away, “He died.” I feel paralyzed in the living room chair.

My husband comes over to me. I am staring at my iPad going through Facebook where the announcement that our friend’s 13-day-old newborn had passed the night before. Baby was waiting for a new heart which never came. Being under constant hospital supervision since birth, he never got to go home to where his older siblings were waiting.

My husband holds my hand as we explain to our older daughter why I am sad. Her friend’s youngest brother passed away. I tell her that it is not fair.

“Oh, he went to heaven to see Harley?” she asks. Harley is our cat who passed away when she was fifteen months old. I wrote two books about him. The last one was about how he was sick, went to the hospital and passed away. Harley became an angel where he felt better and still watched over us. The books are read frequently in our home.

She looked at his picture on the screen. Never have met, she nods and says okay.  I watch her go back to playing her dolls. I try to shelter some feelings from my kids.

After dealing with my mom’s illness and subsequent passing, I never had a true childhood. That motivates me to allow them to be innocent and enjoy their rightful time in their young lives. I do believe in being honest with them.

Having my eldest girl appreciate and understand my sadness because of the Harley story validated that I am doing something right as a mom. As my two and four year old grow up and have their tween dramas, I hope that by allowing myself to show emotion they will be open and free with themselves. Also, to know that I am here for them any time as my mom would have for me  had she lived.

I wipe my tears and close the iPad feeling a little less sad by letting myself be open in my feelings. Holding it in does not help. Despite my overwhelming need to go back to bed and stay there all day, I have to take care of my kids.

One step and one day at a time is a good place to start.

If you have the time, buy dry beans and soak overnight.  Boil in a pot of water until soft – tastes so much better than canned stuff…  If you don’t have time, then go ahead and use canned beans.

1 onion, chopped fine
4 garlic cloves, minced
3 tablespoons olive oil
two cans black, pinto, or pink beans, rinsed and drained
1 cup tomato sauce
2 teaspoons ground cumin and/or chili powder
jalapeño chilies if desired, seeded and chopped
1/4 cup chopped fresh coriander, if desired
twelve 7- to 8-inch flour tortillas warmed
1 1/2 cups grated Monterey Jack
guacamole and tomato salsa and sour cream

Make the filling:

In a large heavy skillet, cook the onion and the garlic in the oil over moderately low heat, stirring, until the onion is softened.  Add the beans, and mash about half of them coarse with the back of a wooden spoon. Add the tomato sauce, cumin, chilies, salt and black pepper to taste.  Cook, stirring, for 5 minutes, or until it is thickened slightly, and stir in the coriander (if desired).

Working with 1 warmed tortilla at a time, spread about 3 tablespoons of the filling down the center of each tortilla.  Sprinkle cheese on top and roll the tortillas, keeping ends open.   Arrange the burritos in one layer in a baking dish.  Sprinkle with more Monterey Jack (optional) and bake, covered with foil, in the middle of a preheated 350°F. oven for 15 minutes.

Serve with this fabulous guacamole  and/or salsa and sour cream.

Sundays are most definitely a day of rest in my household.  It wasn’t always this way. With family obligations and a very robust work schedule, the added stresses of school, little league, Scouts … oh my … let me not even start my rant on that matter … and other extra curricular activity schedules, over programming had become a painful and undoubtedly dreadful consequence.

Perhaps it’s the 21st century wiring of the modern parent and the resulting what’ll-happen-to-my-kid-if-they-don’t-establish-a-well-blanced-resume-and-can’t-get-into-that-college-and-find-that-perfect-job-and-end-up-flipping-burgers-at-XXXXX-and-then-have-to-live-with-me-forever!!!!!! Insanity … er… mentality (fine line there … at least in my case) that has paralyzed any semblance of common sense!

… deep breath …

And if my disposition didn’t make the need for change blatantly clear to me, the frequent bouts of annoying no-you’re-not-dying infirmity…usually uttered drolly to both children and the one male adult, and I do use-that term loosely, of the household plus the incessantly snotty noses belonging to equally whiny booger encrusted little faces; did…. threatening to render this charming fantsi person into one very cantankerous malcontent … that’s fantsi speak for cranky b*tch…

This all led me to reflect on this prophetic proverb: “A Sunday well-spent brings a week of content.”

Simply put: a miserable ME makes for a bunch of miserable YOU’s.

And that is a recipe for familial disaster. Comprendez vous?

Play dates are now discouraged on Sundays, mall outings and shopping expeditions have been abolished, athletic matches that have the misfortune of being scheduled on this day are considered absolute sacrilege by this here Goddess Supreme and shall forevermore be missed unless the participating off-spring can be escorted hither and from by anyone person who is … NOT me.  This is the new gameplan in the Fantsi household. Adopt it NOW for goodness sake!

Granted, there are things that you simply cannot run from or avoid … such as church, or lunch with the out-laws or the occasional nephew’s birthday party at Chuck-hEave-Cheese or niece’s Build-A-someone’s who is not you financial empire-Bear party. But … I digress …. Sundays, I insist, become all about family.

Sunday Brunch, Sunday Lunch, Sunday Yatzhee, Sunday stroll in the Park, Sunday communal nap …. And once all those little familial obligations have been met, you as the matriarch of your dominion are now entitled to that all elusive ME time.  Embrace it! It’s yours!  Little Lucie and Big Bubba … even Hungry Hubby can wait … once you re-emerge the fabulously fantsi female that you deserve to be, even they will concede to your campaign.

In my household, this translates to a 3:00 pm departure aboard the Aloha Loofa Exfoliation express.

Dinner you ask? Well …. this can be a tricky endeavour at first, necessitating some prior planning and preparation … until you can establish a routine … think … Roast or Reservations … anything simple that you can pop in the oven and forget about until 5:00 pm or later … Reservations is always the easiest, but Delivery is my favourite, particularly since this demanding dame would rather lounge about her domicile.relaxation

Rest assured, in time, even your persnickety partner will be spirited by your exquisitely evolved and extremely exuberant self…. after all, a softened and serene YOU just might stir up a spicy après-diner second course for your spouse.  And who does not want that??  Soon enough, you will see … dinner …. will never again be your obligation on a Sunday … *giggle-giggle-wink*.  In fact my routine has been so perfected, my Sunday evenings end up in a luxurious massage … how’s that for Fabulous??

Ok, enough with the tongue twisters and man-ipulations, you get the point!

So now you have your Sunday ME time.  Go forth and exfoliate!! Put on that sensual music or grab that naughty book … this is your time … 2 hours of your week is now entirely yours for the taking … ENJOY!

You most certainly deserve it darlings!

Who Will Win?

The Golden Globes aren’t always a predictor of Oscar gold but the Globes are still the best predictor of what’s to come for the most prestigious awards in Hollywood.

Colin Firth is nominated for best actor.  He won the Golden Globe for his role in The King’s Speech.  Will he take the Oscar home too?

Mama-to-be Natalie Portman was nominated for an Oscar for her role in Black Swan; she won the Golden Globe for best actress, drama.  But Annette Bening won for The Kids Are All Right for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy.   The Oscars doesn’t have two categories.  So who will take it home?

I also think it’ll be a tight race for best director between Darren Aronofsky for Black Swan and David Fincher for The Social Network.  But Fincher won the Golden Globe… will he also take home Oscar?

Ten Nominations for Best Picture?

The 2011 Academy Awards has 10 nominations for best picture.  TEN.  It seems like too many, doesn’t it?

Perhaps the Academy should look to the Golden Globes and create a separate category for best musical or comedy and one for best drama.

How can Toy Story 3 compete with The Social Network for example? They are two totally different films.

The Social Network won the Golden Globe for Best Drama.  Toy Story 3 won for best animated film at the Golden Globes.  Will it win best Oscar?  Very unlikely.  Did they nominate the animated blockbuster just to show respect?

It’s either going to be The Social Network or Black Swan to win.

But is it time that the Oscars adopted a separate category for best picture too?

Who Was Snubbed?

Who was snubbed?  Some say The Town should have been nominated, as well as star Ben Affleck.

Mark Wahlberg was also denied a nod for his role in The Fighter as was Leonardo DiCaprio for his role in Inception, as well as director Christopher Nolan.  Ryan Gosling was snubbed for his role in Blue Valentine – a big disappointment!

Paul Giamatti was not nominated for his role in Barney’s Version, although he won a Golden Globe for best actor in a musical or comedy.

Who else should have made the list?

Oprah's family secretsIt’s been quite the week for Oprah Winfrey!

And not career-wise this time.  We’re talking about family secrets that have come to light this past week.

Oprah Winfrey shared a big family secret on her show on Monday.  She has a half-sister, Patricia Lloyd, who she never knew existed until recently.

Oprah said on Monday that she has learned just in November that she has a half-sister named Patricia, who was secretly given up for adoption in 1963. Patricia, who lives in Milwaukee, said that she discovered Oprah was her half-sister while searching for her birth mother in 2007. Winfrey told her audience that “Imagine my shock just a few months ago, at the end of October, when I found out I have another sister living 90 minutes away”.

When Oprah was 9 years old, her mother, Vernita Lee, was pregnant and gave up her baby for adoption.  Oprah never knew that she had a half-sister.   In fact, she never even knew her mother was pregnant. Forty-eight years later, the two sisters – Oprah and Patricia Lloyd – were finally reunited on the Oprah Winfrey Show.

Oprah’s show revealed the secret and introduced viewers to her half-sister Patricia.  It also featured a taped interview with Oprah, Patricia and her mother Vernita, who opened up about her feelings.  Oprah’s mother didn’t have the means to care for her and chose to give her up.  Patricia tried to contact Vernita several times until finally, she listened.  Oprah commended her for not selling the story and going to the tabloids.

Besides having a secret sister, Oprah has another burden that she’s been carrying around for most of her life other than the family member she never knew. Oprah Winfrey was pregnant at the tender age of 14.

Sadly, Oprah Winfrey’s baby boy died shortly after she gave birth to him. Oprah was so ashamed of her pregnancy, she considered ending her life. She hid the pregnancy as best she could, and her mother Vernita Lee sent her to live with her father, Vernon Winfrey in Nashville.  Vernon had said,  “I would rather see a daughter of mine floating down the Cumberland River than to bring shame on this family and the indecency of an illegitimate child.”

Oprah has said that losing her baby boy gave her a second chance at life.

Now with the news of her half-sister, she’s having another chance at family too – a blessing considering the sad deaths of her two younger siblings.

Oprah’s brother Jeffrey passed away 22 years ago, but they were not speaking at the time of his death in 1989. He told the National Enquirer shortly before he died of AIDS that his half-sister had effectively disowned him, though Winfrey has not discussed the source of their dispute.  In 2003, Oprah’s other half-sister, also named Patricia, died mysteriously.

Oprah was 9 years old when she was first sexually abused. While babysitting Vernita’s children, Oprah’s 19-year-old cousin raped her, took her out for ice cream, and told her to keep it a secret. Within the next few years, she would face more abuse from a family friend as well as an uncle. She kept silent about all of it for years.

Why is all this news coming out now?  Was Oprah finally ready to share her private life with the world?
