Drew Barrymore is a mom!

The actress and new hubby Will Kopelman welcomed their first child on Wednesday.

“We are proud to announce the birth of our daughter, Olive Barrymore Kopelman, born Sept. 26th, healthy, happy and welcomed by the whole family. Thank you for respecting our privacy during this most special time in our lives.”

Barrymore, 37, and Kopelman, 35, were married this past June in the backyard of her $5.7 million Montecito, California, estate.

Barrymore was prepping for the birth of her baby; she had been spotted attending prenatal yoga classes and spending time with Kopelman’s parents, who were in town ahead of the birth.

Congrats to the couple!

Fifty Shades of Grey… a whole lot of xxx.

It’s all the rage in sold books, the number one Kindle bestseller of all time, and women everywhere are buying the trilogy… but why?

Here’s the thing… I “accidentally” bought the books.  By accidentally I mean, I heard that people were talking about 50 Shades and as a working mom without a lot of spare time, I thought – sounds like something good for this summer.  I didn’t ask anyone what it was about – just ordered the trilogy on amazon and had it sent to my summer vacation destination: my parents’ house.

But not before I had posted a message on Facebook, asking if anyone had the books to borrow.  I immediately got a response from one of my sisters saying that I should take the post down as I’d probably given my other sister a hernia just by writing it. Still – no clue. Didn’t think twice, just thought the comment was funny.

This summer I arrive at my parents with kids in tow looking forward to reading and relaxing by the pool.  My sister arrives and tells me what a shit book it is and that she only bought it because I’d posted about it on Facebook. Oh.

So I start getting nervous and think – maybe I need to return these books, maybe they aren’t for me. But I didn’t. Instead, I packed two of the three books for our trip to Maine.

To cut to the chase:  I read all three and my husband was completely happy and let’s just say “satisfied” with the fact that I was reading them.

But I kept thinking – why are these a big seller?  I know that book experts worldwide have analyzed this – I haven’t read any of their thoughts – these are mine.

The author throws in all of the elements of a good romance and then some.  A little over the top but just close enough to the edge that you can accept it.

The very hot, rich, powerful and not so nice main character is someone that I would secretly want to meet, date, …

The woman initially seems like a victim but isn’t. In fact she’s a pretty strong woman who manages to dig in and change the guy.  Now if that’s not every woman’s fantasy…

Sex. Very descriptive sex scenes. Very.  Over the top for sure but still something that, yes even I, in some ways, have dreamt about.

A bit of a story line with a bit of intrigue, a bit of who done it mystery cliffhanger to the next book (a bit) – but enough to make me want to read the next one.  Does that make sense?  Trying not to give anything away…

Character development: they both change for the better.

Very descriptive sex scenes. Oh, did I already write that? Well there you go.  And a lot of them.  Maybe even too many. Imagine…

What it’s not:  It’s not very well written, it’s too long and there really is too much sex.

But all in all, a perfect, no brainer, add a little spice to the bedroom, don’t show your parents (or your kids), summer time read.

Who has read it and what did you think?

September and October in Quebec is all about the riot of colors that comes with the changing of the seasons.

From reds, to gold to brown the river valley along the St Lawrence and beyond is truly a sight to behold.  It’s so beautiful to behold that you can even take a cruise to enjoy the view.

Happy Autumn! Fall foliage in Quebec is just outstanding; here are some things to do this fall:

If cruising isn’t your scene, pack a picnic lunch and head down to the river or one of the two beautiful waterfalls in the Quebec City region and enjoy the sights and scents of fall.  My favourite place to head as soon as the leaves are changing is the Parc des Chutes-de-la-Chaudière.  It’s a nice walk that you can gear towards different fitness levels.  Stay at the top of the falls and enjoy the scenery looking out towards Quebec City or venture down one of the many trails, one of which crosses a suspension bridge, to reach the base of the falls.

Or head over to Le Parc de la Chute-Montmorency and enjoy the 83 m high waterfall that dominates the landscape.  You can discover the falls by taking the stairs or cable car to the top, then dine at the gourmet restaurant at the top.  There is a daily rate for access to this park, unlike the Chutes-de-la-Chaudière, but these falls that are the highest in the province of Quebec and 30 m (98 ft.) higher than Niagara Falls are sure to please.

If you are into short and feature films then the Festival du cinema de la Ville de Quebec is not to be missed.   It features over 100 short films and features from the around the world, that are screened in various downtown Québec City venues.  Head down to Place d’Youville to take advantage of free activities and interactive installations geared to young filmmakers and the general public.  Pick up your tickets online, on site or over the phone.  The festival runs until September 23, 2012.

Happy Fall!

The arrival of September is like a new year – the start of the school year includes new classes, new teachers, and the possibility of new friends and relationships. Similar to the new calendar year, the new school year is an excellent opportunity to make resolutions, such as setting new or improved goals, or deciding to take on new activities.

Teenagers are facing extracurricular activities that put additional demands on their time. An optimistic, outgoing and energetic outlook about what can be experienced and accomplished during the new school year can result in stress for teens who end up having too much to do and not enough time. Helping teens get organized for school can help reduce some of the stress.

Here are some tips to help teenagers get organized and ease their stress:

1. Schedule

It may seem obvious, but getting everything scheduled is a great way to keep on top of things, and there are multiple tools that can be used to facilitate this. Day planners (which are sometimes provided by the school) and/or calendar applications on mobile devices and computers can be used to record assignment due dates, work shifts and appointment times. But don’t stop there. Calendars should also be used to schedule in study time, homework tasks and even time with friends or family. Using different colours can help to more easily identify commitments (and make the calendar more fun to update and not as boring to look at). With electronic calendars, reminders can be activated in a variety of formats such as sounds, emails and pop-up alerts to keep you on task and in the know about what’s coming next. A rule to apply here is: “If it’s not in the schedule, it won’t happen.”

2.  Evaluate and Eliminate

With so many demands on a teenager’s time, it’s often difficult to fit it all in and find a balance. In order to avoid taking on too much that results in stress, poor health or lackluster performance, it can help to evaluate the importance of each obligation and where possible, eliminate surplus commitments that don’t serve a valuable purpose.

For example, consider if an extracurricular activity holds enough purpose to continue, if the time invested conflicts with volunteer work that could create valuable experience and connections. It may prove wise to give up one for the sake of the other. Feelings of overwhelm and questions about how and when everything can be accomplished is a sign that something needs to be eliminated from the schedule.

A question to ask to assist with deciding what to keep and what to cut: “Is this important, and is it important right now?”

3.  Prioritize

The use of a schedule works particularly well when the commitments and tasks are prioritized. There are a variety of ways to achieve this. Use of colour can be helpful, as well as creating a task list that logically progresses through each required step to complete whatever project is at hand. Needs for each week should be considered and then a focus placed on each day to create a clear plan to accomplish whatever is needed while not competing with scheduled events such as classes, work and even time with friends.

While it may at first seem like a time consuming process, creating a schedule will ease the stress that is so often caused by having multiple responsibilities. By eliminating excess obligations and focusing on those that have value, it becomes easier to stay focused, tackle the to-do list and avoid overwhelm.

How do you help your teen get organized and ease their stress?

Chocolate chip waffles are a decadent way to start the day. Top with whipped cream, yogurt, banana or blueberries and a sweet raspberry coulis!

Waffles

1 1/3 cups all-purpose flour

2 tbsp  sugar

1 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp  baking soda

¼ tsbp salt

2 eggs

1-1/4 cups buttermilk

2 tbsp butter, melted

1/3 cup chocolate chips

Mix together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a bowl. In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs, buttermilk and butter; pour over flour mixture. Add chocolate chips and stir just until combined.

Heat waffle iron and spray with cooking spray. Pour about a half a cup of batter onto waffle iron (or enough to spread to edges).  Close lid and cook until waffle is golden.

Top waffle with blueberries and drizzle with raspberry coulis.

Raspberry Coulis

1 cup raspberries

½ cup sugar (or less)

2 tbsp lemon juice

In a bowl and using a hand blender, mix the ingredients into a puree. Place a fine-meshed strainer over a bowl. Pour the raspberry mix through the strainer to remove the seeds. Pour into a squeeze bottle and drizzle over your pancakes, waffles, crepes!

Who would’ve thought you could actually eat the flowers from zucchini? Why yes you can!

It’s a favourite with my Italian husband and family. Here is a simple, easy recipe for zucchini flowers using a light, tasty batter.

Easy Zucchini Flowers Recipe

First, rinse the zucchini flowers very well, including the inside of the flower – you wouldn’t want any crunchy surprises if you know what I mean.

zucchini flowers

You may choose to remove the little green parts of the flower before battering.

Next up, the batter. Mix together 1 cup flour, 1 cup milk and 1 egg along with 3 tbsp parmesan cheese, chopped parsley, salt and pepper.

Dip the flowers in the batter, allowing excess batter to drip off.

In a frying pan, add enough oil to cover the bottom. I use safflower or sunflower oil as it’s healthier.  On low-medium heat, allow the oil to warm up and then place zucchini flowers.

Cook on each side for a few minutes until golden brown. Drain on a plate with a paper towel to soak up excess oil. Buon appetito!zucchini flowers
