Baby Gucci: Why Designer Clothes For Kids Are Popular

by Erica Chapman

As a child growing up in the 90s with middle class parents, never once did I imagine that one day, adults would be dressing their kin in Lanvin. Now that we’re here in the 21st century, it’s unheard of in the celebrity and fashion world if your child is in anything less than Gabbana.

Before infants are able to speak words at all, they are wearing some of the most expensive labels on earth. Diane von Furstenberg, Dolce and Gabbana, Armani and Burberry have all hopped on the kiddy caboose and have conducted themselves in an adorable manor in order to better arm the tiny folk who wear their designs.

Harper Seven Beckham, one of the many offspring of Victoria and David, was wearing some of the priciest brands and was hitting the InStyle top 100 lists, surpassing regular mentions with flying colors. How is that so? Well with a designer for a mother and a footballer for a father, both highly involved in the fashion industry, becoming an extension of her parents’ alter egos is young Harper’s job apparently.

The A-list daughter was seen in Chloé tights and Stella McCartney jumpers long before she could say the words. Some of Ms. Harper Beckham’s ensembles could put a down payment on a house; one might think that dressing a child in expensive brands is sick; you wouldn’t bat an eyelash if you knew who was doing it.

Of course little Mason Disick, Scott Disick and Kourtney Kardashians child, has been seen in Burberry scarves and Gucci loafers. Jennifer Lopez’s children are also sporting Missoni, Prada and Marc Jacobs; if you can foot the bill, place it on your children’s feet. Why do people spend money on designer kids clothing?

Well, it isn’t just celebrities that are forking out handsome dollars in order for their children to wear designers, it’s also housewives and business owners. Edmonton mother Katie Hanson Milroy, co-owner of Dotebaby.ca recently purchased a Burberry sleeper and Missoni jumper for her newborn. Of course both were on sale.

“Fashion is very important to me. We have fun with it but I don’t want her wearing high-end designer labels every day. I think there are other things to focus on.”

It isn’t just about the clothing they’re wearing, it’s about presenting a front as a whole. With Christian Dior Jackets at $2,300, Roberto Cavalli dresses at $675, and Lanvin flats starting at $305, parents like Katie Holmes, Stella McCartney and Hilary Duff are regular clients to the baby fashion departments.

Queasy yet? It’s understandable. Sometimes seeing a mother toting around a Louis Vuitton diaper bag might be cause for some nausea.

But it could be worse – I would rather my child’s first words be Alexander Wang rather then something derogatory!

Erica Champan stumbled upon her love for fashion while scrolling tirelessly through Tumblr. She loves putting on a vibrant outfit and getting stares and awkward glances on the street of her small town.  Fashion isn’t just about putting clothes on and hoping for the best, it’s a lifestyle.  She hopes to work for Vogue and be photographed while strolling the streets of Manhattan.
