Happy New Year! Forget the New Year’s resolutions. This year, start doing things that will benefit you, your physical and mental health, and your life. Here are 10 things to start doing this year, if you’re not already.

10 Things to Start Doing This Year (If You’re Not Already)

Be kind to yourself

First of all, be kind to yourself. Don’t make resolutions you know you can’t keep. You’ll end up setting yourself up for failure, leading to lower self-esteem and self-confidence. Instead, make smaller, more attainable goals that you are confident you can reach.

Forgive

Be honest with every aspect of your life, and if there is something you know you need to work on, do it. Don’t beat yourself up for mistakes that you’ve made. Forgive yourself. Now is the time to reflect on those mistakes, take the lessons learned from them, and move forward, leaving those negative memories behind.

Forgive others. Don’t allow the anger to fester even further. Anger and resentment eats away at your soul. Find a way to forgive and let go.

Be kind to others

Everyone is fighting a battle of some sort, so be kind to others because you don’t know where they’ve been, what they’ve experienced and what they’re going through now. Be empathetic towards others. Don’t take things personally. A simple act of kindness goes a long way.

Spend time with your loved ones

Don’t waste any more time on people who bring you down, cause you pain, stress or unhappiness. Allow true love and joy into your life. Nurture those honest relationships that are effortless and real. Don’t take your loved ones for granted either; tell them how much they mean to you. You don’t need a huge number of friends; a few close friends are just enough.

Enjoy the little moments

The only truth is what is happening to you right now, at this very moment. Try to find joy in the day-to-day, otherwise you will lose out on so many opportunities for happiness. If you’re constantly thinking about future events, the present will slip by, leaving you feeling empty. Don’t lose time worrying about something that has yet to happen.

Be realistic

Yes it’s wonderful to have big dreams and goals but be realistic. Taking smaller steps towards reaching your goals will set you up for success. Work hard doing and not just dreaming. Strive for your best – it’s not necessary to be perfect at everything you do. Sometimes you have to accept things for what they are, and accept people for who they are as well. Obsessing with being #1 all the time is exhausting and detrimental to your own health and sanity.

10 Things to Start Doing This Year (If You're Not Already)

Be attentive

You know that nagging feeling you get when your gut is trying to tell you something? Listen to your instincts. That inner voice is always right. Taking the time to slow down and be fully aware of your mind and body will allow you to move forward with clarity. Have purpose in everything you do.

Be positive

Focus on changing the things you can change, and throw your hands up to what you can’t. Don’t waste time and energy on things that are beyond your control. Replace those nagging, negative thoughts into positive ones.

Choose happy

While we all strive for happiness, sometimes our circumstances are challenging. Accept your current situation and try to find some joy, somehow. Many people think they will be happy once they reach a certain point in their lives – when they lose weight, get a new job, buy a big house, or make more money. The problem is, you’re missing out on being happy right now. You’ll spend your life working towards something without appreciating the steps to get there.

Take care of yourself

Take care of yourself first. No, it isn’t selfish – it’s crucial. If your needs are put on the back burner for the sake of others, you are sabotaging yourself. You’re not any help to others if you don’t take care of yourself first. Eat well, exercise, meditate, take your vitamins especially vitamin D, drink water. Do what makes you happy – it will make you a better person. If you choose happiness, you will see the world differently.
