Browsing

My favourite decade is baaaack – the 90s! We are seeing a ton of 90s inspired trends this spring summer 2014 including metallics, wider leg pants and jeans, longer skirts and pastels. Big sweaters, longer skirts, high-waist pants and menswear are still in style this spring 2014.

One trend that has been in style for the past year or so is the menswear-inspired trend, and this trend seems to be a major one for spring 2014.

So what’s in style for spring 2014?

Spring 2014 style

Oversized

The trend of wearing your clothes a little looser continues through spring and summer 2014. Not to say that tailored fits aren’t in style – they always are – but you’ll see more oversized clothing this year. You can always combine a tailored bottom with a an oversized top, for example.

Sweaters

Since I’m not a fan of the crop top, I’m happy that the sweater is also still on trend. The sweater is an easy piece to wear with pants, skirts, shorts and over dresses. Think chunky or fine, chunky or sporty, layered or by itself.  This spring/summer you’ll see more pop-art inspired sweaters in bright colors and graphics.

Biker and Boxy (Non-Moto) Jackets

Biker or moto jackets have been in style for many seasons but really, they’re a classic. This spring summer, think beyond your basic black and go for one in another colour. Also trending is the short and boxy silhouette in a variety of fabrics. They may be angular and shapeless but can look flattering when worn over a loose top and slim bottoms. Bomber jackets are also trendy this season. Either of these types of jacket can be worn with a skirt or a dress to balance out the toughness.

Wide-Leg Trousers

Spring runways weren’t short of billowy wide-leg pants in both dressy and casual styles. Culottes which are even wider and cropped, are also back in style. Nothing says fashion forward like being the first to jump onto a bold new shape. And while culottes aren’t exactly new, their volume and proportion in spring 2014 is unlike what we’ve seen in recent memory. Now considered ultra-chic, as well as figure forgiving, the mid-cropped culotte should be on your radar for spring 2014.

What's in Style for Spring 2014?

Jeans

Move over skinny jeans – full-length bootcut jeans are making a comeback too. Are skinny jeans on the way out? It’s been more than a decade since Kate Moss stepped out in skinny jeans, and they are finally starting to fade into obscurity – only to be replaced by flared jeans. So depending on which side of the tight jean fence you sit, this is either great or terrible thing.

Metallics

The metallic trend continues. Although we’ve seen full head-to-toe fabrics with sheen in metallic tones on the runway, I would opt for a one-piece statements like a blouse, skirt or a handbag.

What's for Style Spring Summer 2014

Pretty Pastels

In all of the spring and summer 2014 collections, springtime shades reigned supreme. Choose whatever colour flatters you the most and run with it – from soft pink to minty-green, to taupe and gray, you have many options.

Longer skirts

Can someone please tell the younger girls that the mini is not as fashionable this season?!?! Midi skirts and tea-length skirts are a wonderful and welcoming option for this spring/summer. Pair it with a fitted top to offset the fullness of the skirt.
