When I was a kid, we used to spend summers at McGregor Park and Outdoor Pool in Scarborough. I have fond memories of lazy hot days by the community pool, playing with friends and having freezies.

It’s been a long time since I’ve been to McGregor. But when I looked it up, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that they’ve revamped the park and pool, adding in a new “Commons” area.

The Commons Lounge at McGregor Park Recreation Centre was jointly funded by the Government of Canada, the Government of Ontario and the City of Toronto through the Recreation Infrastructure Canada (RinC) Program.

Now you can make a difference in your own community! Canadians can nominate their city or town for the chance to win $25,000 toward a community project that improves an existing space or helps create a brand new one.  Each winning community will also host one of 10 live broadcasts of Canada’s most-watched sports news program, TSN, as part of this summer’s cross-country tour from August 16-25.

The Kraft Celebration Tour has helped hundreds of thousands of Canadians in 40 deserving communities since 2009, giving $1 million toward projects such as building a skateboard park, upgrading a sports field, improving a boxing facility and renovating a community youth centre.

Canadians can nominate their community online at kraftcelebrationtour.ca until June 7.

You must submit a short essay and up to five photos explaining why your community deserves to be a part of the Kraft Celebration Tour and how the $25,000 community award will go towards the creation or improvement of a local community space.

On June 30, TSN will announce the 20 finalists selected by a panel of judges. Then Canadians will decide on 10 winners through online voting beginning July 8.

My own town’s community centre could use a little revamping so off I go to nominate!
