For several months, I was a Sobeys ambassador and food blogger. Our Sobeys location is just across the street and open 24 hours so you can imagine the convenience. I would make a visit practically every day to grab ingredients for dinner. When I heard Sobeys was closing for renovations, I was so excited to see what the new store would look like.
The new Sobeys Extra store opened earlier this month. I couldn’t believe it was the same space as before. They did a complete renovation from top to bottom. Have you seen the new Sobeys commercials too with Jamie Oliver? Win.
As soon as you enter, you’ll see a hot table of freshly prepared foods as well as the larger produce section. Sobeys now has a much larger organic produce section so I’m thrilled about that.
As you move through the store past the produce section, there is also a display of freshly cut produce and fruit items for on-the-go cooking. I can see this as being a very convenient feature for busy families. There are also bagged and packaged salads to-go and fresh juices as well.
There is also a new cheese counter, apart from the deli department, with accompaniments for each cheese type. The new meat department offers a large variety of antiobiotic free and Certified Humane® Raised & Handled meat with brands like Aspen Ridge, duBreton natural pork, Blue Goose Certified Humane Chicken.
The bakery seems more elaborate than before, with chocolate and cupcakes… you can grab a coffee and a dessert and go to town!
The Sobeys Kitchen offers a variety of freshly prepared, ready-to-eat-or-heat meals. There is a sushi and noodle bar, stone oven-baked pizza section and roast beef from the kitchen. Beside that you’ll find the floral shop as well as a coffee bar! The store also offers food tastings and classes – they’ve created an area for this, as well as an area to sit and eat in-store.
I love how they’ve put all the fresh foods into one area of the store – produce, meat, deli, cheese, bakery and hot table on the one side; and then the packaged foods and frozen foods on the other side. All the refrigerated foods are behind glass doors.
In the middle of the store you’ll find the pharmacy as well as a wider selection of organic foods and products. I’m happy that there are so many gluten free and organic food and personal care products in the natural and wellbeing section of the store. The beautiful handmade soaps by Hugo & Debra Naturals just invite you in. There is also a wellbeing counsellor available too!
The new Sobeys Extra store is really about “Better food for all”. The Extra is not just about the new products in store, but also about the complete shopping experience and more personal service.
