While this gorgeous summer doesn’t want to end, there is a little bit of room for a few transitional fall pieces.

What are some of fall’s hottest trends? You’ll see a lot of ‘90s inspired looks including mini-skirt suits, lingerie, and bulky sweats.

Athleisure

Athleisure is still alive and well, with pieces such as hoodies and bomber jackets, to menswear-inspired silhouettes in the form of wide-leg trousers and strong-shouldered blazers. It’s an infusion of streetwear with athletic influences and a cool attitude – think bomber and puffer jackets, oversized hoodies, logo sweats, and boxy sweatpants. Weekend wear is bound to be very comfortably and cool.

A great shirt

A simple staple in fall 2016 wardrobe is a great shirt. A great shirt is the most versatile wardrobe pieces. You can’t go wrong with a menswear-inspired oversized white shirt, or one with a feminine touch like ruffles or in silky-satin fabrics.

Ankle Boots

What better way to transition to fall than with a killer pair of ankle boots? Trade in your go-to basic black pair for something with a little pizazz! From high heeled to casual lace-ups, you should definitely have several pairs for every occasion. I love these Lullabelle Fjord boots from Shumaker.

Lingerie

You’ll see all things lingerie-influenced. Think lace, silky satins, rich velvet, and ruffles are key fabrics and details that that will add a feminine touch to this season’s fall fashions.  While you’ll see slip dresses, camisoles and pyjama-style tops and bottoms on the racks, I doubt I’ll be buying into this trend.

The Miniskirt Suit

The ‘90s mini-skirt suit is back and shorter and more streamlined than ever. Think of Cher and Dionne in Clueless – more school girl than structured.

Turtlenecks

I used to countdown the days at the end of summer so I could pull out my collection of turtlenecks. Now, they choke me! I’ll skip on this trend personally, but you’ll see anything with a high neck including dresses. For a layered look, put a turtleneck under anything… including a slip dress.

Moto, Puffer, Patent Jackets

Moto jackets, short puffer jackets and leather jackets are back again for another season. But this fall, you’ll see more patent leather. What is it about the shine? High patent leather shine meets a crackled texture in this cute moto jacket.

Velvet

Rich velvet will be seen in everything from blazers, to shirts, dresses and even pants. I’m not sure about the whole velvet look in athleisure – remember JLo? I had a few track suits in velvet.

Shearling

Every season, shearling is “in” style, but this season it’s bigger and fluffier.

Deconstructed Denim

Denim is always en vogue, but this season you’ll see more patches, patterns and cutting up and sewing different pairs of jeans together for an artsy look. Wear with your favourite ankle boots.

Bohemian

It’s Coachella and Osheaga all year – the trend you’d wear all music festival-season long. Printed maxi dresses are dressed up enough to wear to an evening event, but throw on ankle boots to dress them down for daytime.

skinny cargo leather jacket fall winter 2010by Maria Lianos

I’ve recently started enjoying shopping again.  I’m one of those people who can’t spend a whole day shopping but likes to be in and out.

I like to know what I’m going to buy before I start looking otherwise I will undoubtedly a) buy clothing I don’t need; b) buy the exact same black sweater that I already have c) buy something just because it’s on sale.

I don’t really follow trends but may buy a few pieces to update my style.  This year, I’ve put a few items on my list that I will specifically look for, many of which are classics.

Here is a list of my favourite top trends for Fall/Winter 2010:

1.  Leather Jackets

This year’s leather jackets are light and as cool as ever.  I already own several but I’m loving the new colours available, especially grey, the new black. The biker style is hot, with zippers and in trendy colours.

Find a jacket light enough to roll into a ball and one with a bit sheen.  You can go cropped and a bit boxy bomber style, or choose one that has a shaped waist.  Of course you can pair with jeans but be creative, pair it with a jersey dress too.

2.  Minimalism

You can’t go wrong with simple. But minimal needs to fit properly so make sure you find pieces that are tailored to fit your body.  See trend below: Tailored.

3.  The Skinny Cargo

Forget the loose, wide-leg cargo. This year’s trend is the skinny cargo, fitted and tapered.  Pair them with flats for a casual, daytime look or with lace-up heels for a funkier look.

4.  Jewel Tones

Black is back in a big way. But that doesn’t mean you can’t still wear colour.  Jewel tones are still trendy especially in amethyst, emerald, onyx or sapphire.  These colours are luxurious and regal.

5.  Tailored

A well-made tailored suit will always be in style.  Buy the best you can afford because these classics, whether a suit, coat or blazer, will last you for years.
