How often do you eat fish? I enjoyed plenty this past summer in Prince Edward Island, North Carolina and of course, in Greece. The Meditteranean diet has garnered a lot of attention because of its heart-healthy diet high in vegetables, legumes, fruits, nuts, olive oil and fish.

Most Canadians don’t eat enough fish. Health Canada recommends two 75-gram servings per week, but on average, we fall short. We could be doing more for our hearts and our overall health by making an effort to eat more fish and seafood at home.

Did you know that the Japanese have half as many heart attacks as North Americans? On average, they eat 100 grams of fish per day, according to a study in the July 2008 Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

So how can we add more fish to our weekly menu?

The Sobeys Seafood Steamer is a great meal option for those busy weeknights, and is a simple, no-fuss solution to help us eat more fresh seafood at home. It’s a convenient, new take on the classic French cooking method en papillote, where fish is steamed in a parchment paper pouch.

All you do is choose your favourite fish or seafood, and the accompanying seasoned butter at the Sobeys Seafood Counter. Sobeys has a variety of fish, including fresh wild halibut, haddock, perch, cod, sea Bass, rainbow trout, salmon, mussels, scallops, and more.

Customers select their fish or seafood from the Sobeys’ Seafood Service Counter, and handpick one of three seasoned butter pats: Lemon and Dill, Garlic and Parsley or Salted.

A Sobeys’ seafood expert will prepare the fish (I ask them to remove the skin when possible), and seal the fish in an oven-safe, ready-to-cook bag to take home. It’s convenient because I don’t have to even touch the fish – I can simply put the bag right into the oven when I get home.

You have the option of cooking in the microwave too. The counter will provide you with a cheat sheet with instructions on how to cook your fish at home. Then, just worry about making a side dish to go with your seafood. Most cuts of fish take about 20-25 minutes to cook in the oven, so dinner can be on the table in a half an hour!

First, I tried a fillet of Haddock with lemon and dill. It was delicious! While haddock is supposed to be a bit more fishy-tasting, the lemon and dill was a delicious compliment to its taste.

Then, I had to have a hearty piece of Halibut, my favourite fish and on the pricier side. I tried this one with garlic and parsley – it was equally delicious! But I do think the lemon and dill butter is my favourite flavour.

Is fish a regular part of your diet? How to eat more fish when you’re not a big fan?

I must admit, we don’t eat enough fish. I used to serve fish about once a week but then the kids stopped enjoying it once they reached a certain age. My husband would barbecue salmon at least once a week, but he too slowed down after we read more about farmed Atlantic salmon and wild fish is quite expensive.

There is plenty of evidence out there that people who eat fish regularly are less likely to have cardiovascular disease. The benefits come from omega-3 fatty acids and although fish oil supplements are popular, it’s not a sufficient replacement for eating fish.

On average Canadians should be eating almost one more serving of fish each week. A recent study conducted by The Canadian Aquacultural Industry Alliance reports that, on average, Canadians consume just 101g of fish or seafood a week. This is almost a full serving short of the Canada Food Guide recommended two 75g portions of fish or seafood a week.

That’s why Jamie Oliver is challenging Canadians to eat more fish with the release of his new frozen fish range in Sobeys stores across Canada! I LOVE Jamie Oliver and what he does, partnering with Sobeys and encouraging Canadians to eat real food.

Made with Marine Stewardship Council (MSC)-certified Pollock, Jamie’s range includes range includes: Crispy Pollock Fishcakes; Brilliant Fish Fillet Fingers and Crispy Pollock & Sweetcorn Fishcakes. When it comes to fish in Canada, Alaska Pollock often swims under the radar. The mild, white-fleshed fish is high in protein, low in fat and contains heart healthy omega-3 fatty acids.

Jamie Oliver fish products

I like that Jamie Oliver’s fish products are made with simple ingredients and no additives – just fish and breadcrumbs pretty much. My kids haven’t eaten fish in a while but they seemed to enjoy Jamie’s Fish Fingers especially.

Here is a recipe for Jamie Oliver’s Fish Finger Sandwich, a great idea for lunch that the kids will enjoy:
