25 Ways to Clean with Baking Soda

Baking soda is not just for baking, or for keeping your fridge smelling fresh.

Along with vinegar, baking soda is one of the best cleaning agents you can use around the home that is non-toxic, inexpensive and multi-purpose. It removes stains, sanitizes, deodorizes, polishes, cuts through grease and more.

How else can you use baking soda around the house? Well I have a list of 25 ways to clean with baking soda!

  1. Instead of harsh chemical cleaners, use baking soda as natural and food-safe surface cleanser on your kitchen counters. Sprinkle it onto a damp sponge or cloth to wipe surfaces clean. Wipe and then rinse with water.
  2. Keep your fridge and freezer smelling fresh with ARM & HAMMER™ Fridge Fresh™.  For best results, replace every three months. Baking soda helps eliminate strong odours in both the fridge and freezer to help foods taste fresher longer.
  3. To remove stale smells from food containers or coffee mugs, rinse out with hot water and baking soda. Soak overnight if smell or stains are stubborn.  Let them soak in a mixture of 4 tablespoons baking soda to 1 litre water.
  4. To clean silver, use a paste of 3 parts baking soda to one part water. Rub the paste onto the silver with a clean cloth or sponge until the tarnish is gone. Then rinse with warm water and dry with a soft cloth.
  5. Remove scuff marks and spills from the floor by sprinkling with baking soda and then wiping with a warm, damp cloth.
  6. Clean pots and pans and caked-on food by sprinkling with baking soda and adding hot water. Let heavily caked-on pots and pans and soak overnight.
  7. Remove stubborn stains with a baking soda paste – 3 parts baking soda, one part water. Apply, let stand, then scrub or wipe clean.
  8. Use Baking soda in your cat’s litter box to help prevent odours.
  9. Remove bad odours and spills from carpet by sprinkling baking soda over carpets before vacuuming to get out any lingering odours. Let stand for at least fifteen minutes and vacuum.
  10. To remove burnt food from your barbecue grill, sprinkle with baking soda, then soak. After several hours, the charred pieces will come loose easily.
  11. Before you pull out your patio furniture for the season, give it a thorough cleaning with baking soda. You can also keep your outdoor furniture fresh by sprinkling a little baking soda underneath cushions or inside the storage bag.
  12. Dust a bit of baking soda in the bottom of your garbage cans and recycling bins.
  13. Clean tile floors with ½ cup baking soda to a bucket of warm water. Mop and rinse.
  14. Sprinkle a bit of baking soda onto a damp sponge and apply directly to dirty walls and furniture. Rinse well.
  15. You can also keep closets smelling good by leaving a box open in a corner of your closet.
  16. Sprinkle a handful of baking soda on the bottom of your dishwasher to absorb food odors before your next load.
  17. You can also use baking soda to get dishes sparkling: add 2 tablespoons of baking soda to your regular dish detergent to cut the grease and foods left on your tableware.
  18. Remove grease and oil stains in the garage with pouring baking soda directly onto the spot and scrubbing with a wet brush.
  19. Wash your car by mixing ¼ cup baking soda in 1 quart warm water and use the solution to clean the exterior including windows and tires and the interior and floor mats.
  20. Refresh stinky runners by sprinkling baking soda inside the shoes to soak up sweat and odors.
  21. Clean baby or kids toys with 1/4 cup baking soda in 1 litre warm water.
  22. Keep drains flowing properly and avoid clogging by pouring 1/4 cup baking soda and hot water down sink and shower drains.
  23. Wash your clothes in cold water with a detergent specially formulated for use in cold water like ARM & HAMMER™ Coldwater Laundry Detergent.  You can save money on your energy bill at the same time, compared to using hot water.
  24. To remove grease stains, either add baking soda to the wash load or pre-treat the stains with a baking soda paste.
  25. Add a ½ cup baking soda to the rinse cycle to help get linens and towels extra clean and fluffy.
