When I submitted my picture for the “Hottest Moms” contest, I wrote that I was a hot mom because I manage to be an amazing mom, while still maintaining the essence of who I am at the core. Who I am at the core is a girl who loves to laugh, who loves to smile, who loves to make other people happy, who loves to look good and who loves spending time with friends and family. I’m also a girl who loves to work… hard!
Before I had my son, I worked for over 10 years in advertising agencies. For those of you who don’t know, this means long, long, very long days. All nighters. Three meals a day eaten with your work “family”. Weekends in the office. Press approvals at 3 a.m. Week long photo shoots away from home. And, on the flip side, lots of fun work parties and “fun days” out of the office. I met almost all of the friends I have in my life right now in those agency years. There’s nothing like making a deck of cards out of scrap paper at 4:00 a.m. to create bonds with people!!! You know, back in those days, I worked so much that I honestly don’t know how I managed to meet the man of my dreams and actually marry him! I think it may have had something to do with the fact that we met at work!
After some soul searching, I made a decision to leave my agency job and save myself! I missed the work for the first few weeks, but gradually I was able to regain perspective. I spent 5 months at home being a stay at home wife and loved every minute of it. Then I went on to spend a year on the client side as a marketing manager. It was a one year mat leave contract and while I was on the contract I got pregnant!
Let me tell you… when I set eyes on my Evan, it was love at first sight… a kind of love I never knew was possible. I knew right then and there that I would never return to agency life. I knew that I now had something more important to me then working out of the house until the wee hours of the morning. In fact, I thought for a few months that I may never return to work… maybe I was destined for a life of being a stay-at-home mom until Evan was in school full time. But, after a year, I realized that part of what makes me me, is that love of work! So, I made a decision to work from home and started my own freelance marketing business. I put Evan into daycare to allow him to socialize and learn in a structured environment, and to allow me to get my business off the ground. It was the perfect decision… 5 years later I am doing exactly what I want to be doing. I have enough flexibility in my schedule to volunteer in Evan’s SK class every other Friday morning and I have enough work to keep me busy almost full time! I also have the ability to grab a bit of “me time” in the middle of the afternoon if I need some… I just work in the evening to catch up!
So, here I am… I have the best of everything… I have a perfect little 5 year old boy, a wonderful husband, a beautiful home and an incredibly satisfying career. When I think about it, I think life has turned out pretty well! I am who I’ve always been at the core, but I’m just a better version of the old “pre-mom” me!
