I’ve been writing a lot lately about spring cleaning and decluttering… our family of four has accumulated enough STUFF that we just don’t know what to do with it all. There seems to be quite a bit that we need to toss and donate.

The garage is one area that needs some extra TLC. Every season, the garage needs a complete clean-up – everything comes out of the garage, the floors are cleaned and then everyhing is put back in a somewhat organized fashion.

But what’s lacking in our garage is some good storage cabinets and organization. So I’ve been looking at Canadian Tire to help me organize my garage.

There are some great ideas on their website, and a variety of garage storage solutions. Here are some that inspired me:

Where to even begin when you are organizing your garage?

garage organization

First of all, figure out what you need to keep in the garage and what you should store in a garden/backyard shed. We have a larger shed in the backyard where the lawnmower and gardening tools are kept. Also some extra patio and folding chairs are stored there, leaving room in the garage for other items.

Set an area for garbage and recycling; another area for sports equipment such as bicycles, scooters, balls etc.; and area for tool organization and a work space; and area for car supplies like tires, oil, etc. and possibly an area for gardening.

Tall Cabinets:

A tall cabinet is a great option for storing supplies out of plain view. If you have smaller children, a locking cabinet is a good choice, keeping chemicals and dangerous items away

Cabinets and work benches:

Rather than a tall cabinet, you could opt for a  Base Garage Cabinet and a work bench beside it. A wall cabinet above the base cabinet is a great alternative to the tall cabinet.

Work bench:

For the handy person and DIYer, a heavy-duty workbench is a must-have. It will have some storage with drawers and shelves as well as a power bar for power tools

Steel Shelves:

Depending on their size, steel shelves are able to hold heavy items such as tires, tools, potting soil, water softener salt and more.

Wall storage:

A track panel system is smart, space-saving way to sort and display items such as tools. using a slat wall, hooks, or even baskets to store items and can easily be rearranged if you add new items.

I find there is not enough shelf space or places for large or odd shaped items like bikes and winter sleds etc

  2. The most challenging thing for me is getting hubby to throw stuff out!

The most challenging thing for us is finding space. We have the smallest two-car garage!

  4. The most challenging thing for me is where to begin the organization in the garage.

Finding a spot for all of hubby’s tools and all the little bits & pieces he collects but never organizes.

  6. Finding space to organize and stuff everything we have in garage is challenging

  7. We have a small house and too much stuff so the garage is overloaded with all the “extras” that somebody just can’t get rid of. It looks like a hoarder’s paradise and we don’t know where to start. That’s our biggest challenge.

  8. most challenging would be that after I organize it everyne else seems to disorganize, not put things back or just toss in!

Putting a plan together and getting started is the most challenging when organizing the garage!

  10. Finding the right shelving and cabinets to fit everything along with a car inside

  11. I find it so challenging to find convenient spots for all the little knick knacks

  12. I have a hard time with setting up a flexible organization system. I get things set up once for what we currently have, and then my son gets involved in new sports, we buy new patio furniture, we find a great deal on soil…something comes along to change things and then our wonderful organization system is suddenly out of date. It’s like we need to review and change it every year. If there was something inexpensive but modular, that would be really helpful.

  19. Too much stuff stuffed into the garage. Need to organise it.
    Cheers.

  20. Finding a spot for everything and organizing it nicely is a challenge.

  21. Finding things after I have put them in a “Place that I’ll remember” it never seems to work out for me. Our children’s toys have overtaken my garage despite my best efforts.

It’s hard to get organized with all my husband’s cars, tools, tires and everything else that he has in the garage.

Biggest challenge apart from uninterrupted time from my 10 yr old son Evan, is watching out for nails, screws inadvertently dropped on the garage floor.

  24. The most challenging thing is the fact this is the space all the extra stuff goes. So when we have a stroller we need to sell it goes there etc. not cool when it comes to clutter.
