There is nothing like mom’s Greek chicken soup to make you feel warm, safe and secure. I can close my eyes and smell the delicious aroma of chicken broth, sweet carrots and onions.

I clearly remember how my mom would press her lips to my forehead to see if I was running a fever. Her lips were always a good predictor, before bringing out the thermometer for accuracy. If I had a cold, she would squeeze fresh orange juice for me.

Even today, my mom will still tell me what to do to make me feel better.

If I’m suffering a migraine:

“Boil water and place your head over it with a towel, and breathe in the steam!”

If I had a stomach ache:

“Drink some ginger ale, it’ll help your tummy.”

If I had abdominal cramps:

“Lay down and place a hot water bottle on your belly.”

Mom’s advice stuck with me; I do the same now with my own children. Now I take care of my kids when they’re sick #LikeMomDoes.

“Don’t go outside like that!” I’ll shout at my kids. “You need a heavier jacket! I don’t want you to catch a cold!”

As soon my kids step in from outdoors, “Wash your hands! With soap! For 20 seconds!”

Lo and behold, when my kids don’t listen, the sniffles begin the very next day. Mom knew what she was talking about. While I didn’t enjoy the constant nagging when I was a child, I appreciate it now that I’m a mom too.

Mom just knows what to do to take care of you, and only your own mom has that special touch to make you feel better. Thank you, mom, for taking care of me all those years. Thank you, for making me chicken soup at the first sign of a cold, nagging me to wear a hat and dress warm, and for the warm snuggles when I needed them.

Thank you, Mom, for caring and loving me the way you did, and still do.

  1. Tylenol is like a tradition in the family. It’s always there to save the sickly days especially now that the weather is too cold.

It’s so true and now that I am the mom, I totally get why I always needed my mom when I was sick as a kid.

  3. Mom’s are the best. I miss mine when she is not here (she lives in the other side of the country). She is always there when I need her though and I try to do the same with my kiddo.

    • Oh I’m sure that’s tough that your mom lives so far away! Thank goodness for technology.

  4. Mom’s just always know, don’t they! As a new mom, I keep catching myself repeating stuff my own mother said. It is crazy how suddenly you become the one that someone is looking to for answers. I hope I can be as great as my own mom.

    • I hear you! At first, I think “Oh no, I’ve turned into my mother!!!” But then, I realize… “Gosh, I’m really proud that I take after her”.

Moms are always the best, it feels nice to be needed. Tylenol is definitely a staple in my home, I love their new family program.

  6. My mom always tries to make me as comfortable as possible when I am feeling under the weather.

  7. This is so true… I’m realising now that I’m a mum that I’m the one that’s expected to know these things!!

  8. I remember one time my mom brought me some chicken noodle soup when I had the flu. It was just Campbell’s, and I was grown, but the gesture that she cared enough about me to do that (we have a history) touched me so much I still think about it 12 years later!

  9. These are all true. My mom used to nag us about these things when we were young and it was only when I had kids that I appreciated what she did to us back then.

  10. My mom is the one who’s always taking care of me when I’m sick and even if I am not she is the one who looks after me and accept all my flaws.

  11. That Greek Chicken Soup sounds amazing. I think I’ll make it for my kiddies for them to feel better when they’re sick.

  12. I agree with this post, nobody rakes care of you like mom, I enjoyed reading this very touching and sweet post.

  13. I don’t even live in the same state as my mom, but I still call her when I’m sick. She always gives the best advice!

    • See? Even hearing your mom’s voice can be soothing. Thanks for reading 🙂

  14. Isn’t it amazing that moms know almost anything? I mean, we were not given any instruction booklets on how to be a mom but we know! My mom is old now but she is still sharp and gives a lot of advice on how to raise the kids, shares her secret recipes and just never tires of mothering even if me and my siblings are all middle aged!

    • Aw that’s so very sweet that your moms still gives advice to you and your siblings. You never stop being a mother, regardless of how old your children are 🙂

Mom’s are the best, and are always there for you no matter how old you are
