The 2015 Honda CR-V caters to small families with excellent safety features and ratings, and impressive interior room and a larger cargo capacity. No wonder the CR-V has been rated one of the top compact crossovers for the past several years. The CR-V offers a higher ride height for better visibility, spacious cargo and good fuel economy.  The 2015 model has a few new features too.

Interior

The 2015 CR-V’s upgraded interior offers more space and leg room, comparable to a mid-size sedan. There are new rear passenger vents, and a new center console with armrests. I liked the convenience of all the USB ports in the center console, within reach for my passengers too.

Honda’s touchscreen infotainment system includes Bluetooth pairing with audio streaming capability, text-messaging support, a USB port and auxiliary audio input jack, and smartphone mobile app integration via HondaLink technology. I had a little bit of trouble figuring out how to sync my phone and figure out some of the features – I would need to further read the manual.

Exterior

As for the Honda’s body, it too has a refreshed exterior with new headlights, grille, bumpers, and wheels. The front end looks like a car, but then the body and rear is higher and boxy like an SUV. Other features include rear privacy-tinted glass, black heated power side mirrors including expanded view driver’s mirror, front and rear splash guards and multi-reflector halogen headlights with auto-off.

Cargo Space

Cargo space is plentiful with 35.2 cubic feet of space, and by folding the rear seats down, 70.9 cubic feet of space. While the trunk offers plenty of room, thanks to the boxy back end of the vehicle, I’m concerned that with two boys playing hockey, their gear may not fit in the trunk as they grow older. Thinking about tournaments and bringing hockey gear as well as suitcases, cargo space may be an issue.

Safety

The CRV has a Top Safety Pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. There are new safety features including LaneWatch camera technology for the right side of the CR-V, a lane-departure warning system, a lane-keeping assist system, a forward-collision warning system, and a collision-mitigation braking system. SmartVent airbags are new, too, and the available HondaLink smartphone connectivity system offers automatic collision notification once you’ve opted in to the service.

Performance

Honda has upped its functionality by adding tech features like the available Display Audio System with HondaLink™ Next Generation and by introducing available Honda Sensing™ technologies that include features like the Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS®) and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC).

The 2015 CR-V has a new 2.4-litre 16-valve, Direct Injection DOHC i-VTEC® 4-cylinder engine paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), generating 185 horsepower and 181-lb. ft. of torque. New to the CRV, CVT offers a wide ratio range for the driving conditions, to help provide a natural-feeling drive with efficiency in mind.

The CR-V is easy handling and maneuverability. For drivers who want all-wheel drive, the available Real Time AWD with Intelligent Control System gives the CR-V a solid ride. It is designed to help provide traction in low-grip driving conditions such as snow, rain and unpaved road surfaces, and delivers a faster, more intuitive initial response when a loss of traction is detected. I’d be curious to drive the CR-V in the snow, as I always change out my vehicle’s tires for winter tires.

Fuel Economy

With Earth Dreams™ Technology, the CR-V’s powertrain is designed to increase fuel efficiency without sacrificing performance.

Eco Assist coaches you to drive more efficiently, using coloured lights on either side of the speedometer to show you how efficiently you’re driving. With a push of the ECON mode button, ECON mode is activated, a feature designed to improve fuel efficiency by automatically adjusting the CR-V’s engine and other auxiliary systems.

2015 Honda CR-V caters to small families

The CR-V has been rated one of the top compact crossovers for the past several years, but the 2015 model has more features than ever before. With a reasonable price tag, it’s clear why the Honda CR-V remains a top family car pick. More info and specs here.

How do I get my child to listen? I myself can relate to this issue with my own children. My kids don’t listen unless I’ve asked them almost five times! So how do I get my child to listen the first time?

Family expert Sara Dimerman is here to answer any questions you may have. If you need to submit a question, please email amotherworld@gmail.com.

Q: How do I get my child to listen?

A: This is one of the most common questions I get asked. I always begin by responding that when a child does not respond, it’s not that he’s not listening, but rather that he is choosing not to respond.

Unless you’re living in the Duggar’s home (and even then we now know that things aren’t as perfect as they would have liked us to believe), most “normal” children are not wired to jump when being called. Rather, they’d prefer to continue with what they are doing, ignore you or procrastinate about changing direction. And especially if what you are asking them to do is not what they want to do (such as brushing their teeth or taking a shower) they may very well feign deafness. In actual fact, what they are is parent deaf.

So, if you’re asking how you can get your child to jump to attention every time you make a request or give a command, I’m sorry but I can’t help you with this. Children are not robots. They have will and so called minds of their own. What I can help you with is encouraging them to be responsive to you and to acknowledge what you are saying so that you know that they are in fact hearing you:

Make your request in close proximity to them.

In other words, don’t scream for him to turn off the television from another level in the house. Move into his space, sit beside him, put your hand on his back and ask for his full attention. If he’s in the middle of something, acknowledge that and wait a bit for him to redirect his thoughts and presence. Then, look at your child in his eyes and let your request be known.

Don’t expect immediate results.

Be mindful that switching gears can take some effort and just because you’ve told her to pick up her toys, doesn’t mean that she will – especially right away. Negotiate a fair amount of time within which to see the request through and let her know what the consequences will be if the request is not followed through with.

How to get my kids to listen?

Model listening.

If your child is talking to you, don’t divert your attention from your computer or your phone for seconds at a time. Engage non verbally as much as verbally and give him your full attention. If you can’t do so at the very moment he wants, let him know that you are busy and give him a time within which you will give him your undivided attention.

Ask a different question.

Instead of asking “Why don’t you listen?” rather ask “What made it difficult for you to co-operate with me when I asked you to?”

Adjust expectations.

Just because you ask your child to do something does not mean that he will co operate and comply every time. Expect some resistance. Remember that a strong willed child, even though more difficult to parent, may be better equipped to handle what life has in store.

Ahhh summer means fun in the sun, sand and water. But your skin can take a toll with the summer elements. What are some of best skin products you need this summer to keep your skin protected, healthy and hydrated?

Here are some of the skin products you need this summer, to keep your skin glowing!

Dermalogica Redness Relief Primer SPF 20

I used the Dermalogica Redness Relief Primer SPF20 while in Florida while on vacation. Even though I used sunscreen, my face became red from the sun, and I noticed that the relief primer toned down the redness. Wear it under your make-up as it acts as a good primer and helps reduce redness instantly, thanks to the greenish tone of the primer. It helps to balance skin tone with natural green botanical extracts. Velvety silicones smooth the skin and strengthen barrier protection while physical sunscreen shields the skin from irritating UV rays.  Dermalogica.ca

Mustela Sun Protection

Who doesn’t love the sun? The truth is, about half as thick as your own, baby’s skin is more sensitive and much more vulnerable to UV rays. And sunburn is not the only consequence of excessive exposure: over time, the sun can also cause cell damage that permanently weakens the skin.

It’s important to minimize exposure and to protect your baby’s skin with a good sunscreen. Safe for babies (and adults), the new Mustela Sun Protection products protect your baby effectively against UVAs and UVBs, while respecting the delicate skin. The 100% organic-mineral sunscreen systems are enriched with a complex of patented active ingredients of natural origin and vitamin E.

What’s great is that product’s white colour makes it easy to see whether any area needing protection has been forgotten. The suncreen stick is perfect to use on squirmy little faces – I’m able to quickly apply sunscreen on my boys forehead, around the nose and mouth and behind the ears. It goes on thick so you can take comfort in knowing they have good protection.

  • Broad spectrum SPF 50+ mineral sunscreen stick
  • Broad spectrum SPF 50+ mineral sunscreen lotion
  • After Sun Spray

Available in pharmacies throughout Canada. Mustela.ca.

Live Clean Fresh Face

Live Clean Fresh Face has three new additions to their collection:

  • Hydrating Creamy Cleanser
  • 24 Hour Hydrating Day Cream
  • Refreshing Facial Wipes

All products have Botanical Orchid-C Complex, a powerful combination of Orchid, Vitamin C and Certified Organic Botanicals. Orchid extract seals in moisture and replenishes skin’s moisture barrier, while antioxidant Vitamin C protects and boosts radiance. With unique combination of Certified Organic Botanicals to Calme/Soothe: Lavender, Cucumber, Chamomile, Milk Thistle, Mallow, Aloe and Buckthorn.

The Creamy Cleanser is good for normal to dry skin, gently cleanses the skin of impurities, oil and make-up without stripping the skin of moisture, and contains Kaolin Clay to cleanse deep into the pores. The 24 Hour Hydrating Day Cream is non-greasy and gives your skin nourishment all day long. The Refreshing Wipes help gently remove excess oil and makeup. These are perfect for travelling, when you need a quick refresher, or my favourite – when I’m too lazy to do a proper skin cleaning at the end of the day but want to quickly remove makeup and go to sleep!

Another fabulous Live Clean product perfect for summer is the Apple Cider Clarifying Shampoo. If your hair becomes oily in the summer, and you’re using anti-frizz products to tame your hair, this shampoo will help cleanse your hair of those hair products. Apple cider vinegar has antiseptic and astringent qualities, to help break down product build-up on your hair – without stripping the hair. Use it daily for oily hair and weekly for normal to dry hair.

Kinky Boots will Raise You Up! The Canadian production of Kinky Boots burst into the Toronto theatre scene with rave reviews after its official opening on Sunday at the Royal Alexandra Theatre.

Based on the 2005 film Kinky Boots by Geoff Deane and Tim Firth, which was inspired by true events, the musical tells the tale of Charlie Price (Graham Scott Fleming), who is reluctant to take over his late father’s Northampton shoe factory.

To save the business, Charlie forms an unlikely partnership with cabaret performer and drag queen, Lola (Alan Mingo Jr.). Lola, aka cross-dressing Simon (Alan Mingo Jr.), was disowned by his father because he wanted him to become a prizefighter. Now, Lola is lighting up London with his flamboyant performances with his Angels.

As Charlie begins to lay off workers, Lauren (AJ Bridel), gives him the bright idea to find a potential niche market… drag queens With Lola’s help, Charlie develops a plan to produce a line of high-heeled boots. In the process, he and Lola discover that they are not so different after all.

The hit Broadway musical has music and lyrics by Tony, Emmy and Grammy-winner Cyndi Lauper and a book by Tony-winner Harvey Fierstein. Lauper was in the crowd at the official opening, and joined the cast on stage at the end of the musical to a standing ovation.

You’ll love all the characters, especially the dynamite Lola who is brilliantly played by Alan Mingo Jr. You’ll laugh throughout Lauren’s song, “The History of Wrong Guys” and want to jump up from your seats during “Everybody Say Yeah” and “Raise You Up/Just Be” with the entire cast. Graham Scott Fleming belts out “Soul of a Man” during the second act, followed by a powerful tear-jerking ballad by Mingo Jr., “Hold Me in Your Heart”.

Kinky Boots has now been extended to November 8, 2015 at the Royal Alexandra Theatre. For tickets, visit: http://www.mirvish.com/kinkyboots

Kinky Boots with Raise You Up

While all the other kids were allowed to sleep in and watch cartoons every Saturday morning, I dragged my feet to Greek school. I would so look forward to those holiday weekends so I could finally watch all of my favourite TV shows.

I’m so happy to be able to re-live some of those memories and introduce those same characters to my own children in the old-school classic cartoons. Favourite cartoons from my childhood are now classics. Even as a child I had an eclectic taste, if I do say so myself! I enjoyed superhero cartoons including Batman, Spiderman and Hercules, the fun and loveable Smurfs, the hilarious Scooby-Doo and, of course, Bugs Bunny.

Here are some of my favourite Throwback to my Childhood picks on Netflix:

Bugs Bunny Road Runner Movie

This anthology of cartoons starring Bugs Bunny and the Road Runner features 11 hilarious shorts and an array of classic clips. The “wascally wabbit” recalls escapades with Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Road Runner, Elmer Fudd, Pepe LePew, Wile E. Coyote.

Netflix June Bugs Bunny (529x800)

Netflix June 2015

Tom and Jerry: The Movie

Tom and Jerry, one of the most famous animated duos of all time, come to life on the silver screen in this magical, music-filled adventure.

My Little Pony Friendship is Magic

Journey to the enchanted land of Equestria, where unicorn Twilight Sparkle and her pals have adventures and learn valuable lessons about friendship.

The Magic School Bus

Join Ms. Frizzle as the Magic School Bus travels to outer space, under the sea, through an anthill and even inside the human body.

Ultimate Spider-Man

Peter Parker comes of age in an epic tale that finds him torn between his teenage life and and a war between SHIELD and Norman Osborn.

Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island

When Daphne’s TV show does a segment on real monsters, the gang fires up the Mystery Machine and heads to Moonscar Island, where zombies await.

Netflix June Scooby-Doo (480x720)

Upcoming shows like the new Netflix original series Popples and The Magic School Bus gives parents and their kids more to bond over. Not only are old-school classics more popular than ever, but these reboots are introducing a whole new generation to some of the beloved characters we grew up with.
