Whether you’re traveling across town to Grandma’s house for dinner, or cross-country on a vacation of a lifetime, you will want a family road trip tips to get you through the journey, especially if you have kids in tow. Keeping children and teenagers occupied or entertained in the car can be quite a feat. Here are several great family road travel tips to keep mind for the trip:

5 Family Road Travel Tips

1. Download Convenient Travel Apps

Before you gas up the car for your trip, make sure you have the right travel apps to assist you on your adventure. Apps like GasBuddy will help you find the cheapest gas stations in the United States and Canada. When it comes to discovering attractions and activities along your road trip route, try Roadtrippers Another great app is HotelTonight, which allows you to find last-minute markdown hotel rooms on the go up to seven days in advance, or you can even book the day-of.

2. You Gotta Have Food

Depending on the age of your children, you probably already know you need to have food on hand no matter how far you are traveling. It’s necessary to have some snacks (or meals if you are driving farther) packed in a cooler. Remember—hungry kids are grumpy kids!

When the trips are on the longer side, they require a bit more sustenance to avoid mindless snacking. Focus on foods that are healthy, and try to focus on items with protein. Veggies and hummus, whole grain tortilla wraps with turkey and avocado, and beef jerky are great options.

You can also pack some portable snacks such as crackers, cheese, sandwiches, cereal or fruit, as well as a flat of bottled water. It’s best to avoid food and drinks with sugar or caffeine.

3. Electronics + Toys

Even with children as young as 2-years-old, you can surely occupy their time on a road trip by bringing along a tablet, iPod or portable DVD player for them to play games, watch a movie or listen to music. For school-age children, you can fill the device with age-appropriate educational apps such as Zoo Alphabet For Kids and Coloring Pages For Kids

If you are traveling with teens (or if you need some quiet time!), it might be wise to bring some noise cancelling ear buds to drown out any unwanted noise, talking or music that may be going on in the car. Brands like Sony carry a variety of both in-ear and headphone styles. There’s nothing worse on a family road trip than kids arguing because the music is too loud, or because they can’t hear their movie!

Other devices to consider packing include e-readers, a digital camera to capture the memories, a power bank to keep your devices alive, spare batteries and sunscreen. You will also need some non-stimulating toys and books on hand such as coloring books and crayons, playing cards, sticker books and magnetic travel games.

4. Safety at All Costs

Remember to keep your car stocked with a first-aid kit and other safety items in case of emergency. This includes band-aids, matches, basic non-prescription drugs, hand sanitizer, a roll of toilet paper, baby wipes, and trash bags.

As for your car, your survival guide should include a basic safety kit with a fire extinguisher, reflective warning triangles, tire gauge and sealant, jumper cables, flashlight, duct tape and utility tool.

5. Unplug

It’s good to remember that these trips are also about family time; so unplug from the devices, and enjoy each other’s’ company! Connect as a family while playing I-Spy, counting cars, or hunting for license plates along the interstate! Savor the delays, and ditch the tight schedules. Appreciate the time you are having with the people you love. Nothing matters more than that!

I come from a Greek background, my husband is Italian so I never got an allowance growing up, it was just expected that I do chores around the house. As a teenager, I wasn’t allowed to go out Friday or Saturday night until I had my chores done, which included cleaning the house. Now that I have kids of my own, I often wonder if I should be giving my kids an allowance.

Growing up this way, it’s ingrained that we all have to do chores and clean up after ourselves in the house, and that we shouldn’t attach money to daily tasks such as making your bed, putting your dirty plate into the dishwasher. So I haven’t been giving my kids an allowance.

Should I be giving my children an allowance?

Teresa Cascioli, author of the children’s book series M is for Money™, says giving an allowance to children is important for parents to see how children respond to money.  “Parents will see whether they are savers or spenders, and give kids an opportunity to understand there is a correlation between work and reward.”

M is for Money™ is a children’s book series following the financial adventures of its main characters, Tessa and Benji, as they learn about money, making and saving money, visiting a bank, taking out a loan and more. M is for Money™, written by Teresa Cascioli, is aimed to children 5-9 years of age, the perfect time to start talking about dollars and coins, and their value.

Parents should monitor how their child responds to having money, how they save for something they want to buy, and learning how to budget. Some kids are natural savers, some are natural spenders.

I already know that my 11 year old will save his money, but my 9 year old will spend every dollar he receives. How do I teach him to save?

Give your spender play money

Teresa suggests giving him play money, which she provides in her book series. “For x and y chores, they’ll get a $5 Benji bill. That Benji or Tessa money, then they can buy something special – parents can convert play money to real money.”

This way, my big spender will learn to understand work very early, thats it’s not easy to earn a buck – and that they don’t take my money for granted. By giving him an allowance with play money, I’ll learn what he will do with it, and how he’s going to spend it – teaching him how to budget. And if my children make a mistake, it’s ok.

“We understood money in a different way because our parents didn’t have money to give us. That’s not the case anymore,” says Teresa. “When parents now give their children money, they get the $5 and think, ‘oh mommy gave me the $5, or it comes out of the machine.’ By having them work for it, and having them make decisions with the money, it helps them understand the value of a dollar, the hard work that is involved in earning it, and you’ll find they won’t be as free to give or spend their money.”

Chores recommended for allowance?

Chores that aren’t necessary every day, that require extra effort, can be great for allowances. Here are some examples:

  • Helping clean the car
  • Helping in the garden, ie. water flowers
  • Spring cleaning
  • Helping to wash the windows
  • Shoveling the snow

Having an active and fulfilling sex life can improve physical health and fitness, reduce stress, and even lead to improved sleep.

While some couples experience decreased libido, there are several ways to enhance the mood and spice things up in the bedroom.

Here are 6 ways to steam up the bedroom, and have more sex with your partner.

6 Ways to Steam up the Bedroom

Try new things in the bedroom

Monotony and routine are common sexual concerns in relationships. In a recent Trojan™ survey, most participants agreed that they are more interested in trying new things to enhance pleasure than they were ten years ago. What does “new things” mean exactly? Oh, I’m sure you can use your imagination… but here are some ideas:

Text or sext each other throughout the day

Dress up in lingerie

Try a new sex toy

Have some fun with role play

Watch an adult movie together

Try a new position

Massage

Long foreplay…

Let’s talk more about foreplay.

Have more foreplay

Kissing and hugging before sex is associated with a more pleasurable experience! In a recent Trojan survey, for men, 11-15 minutes of foreplay was most strongly associated with “very pleasurable” sex. For women, 16-20 minutes was the “sweet spot.” So don’t rush into sex. You’ll enjoy it more if you build up the passion and feel more connected to your partner.

6 Ways to Steam up the Bedroom

Lube up

Due to hormonal changes, some women experience dryness which can lead to discomfort during sex. Using a lubricant can enhance your sex life. Innovations in lubricants include Trojan™ Arouses and Releases™ and Arouses and Intensifies™ for a whole new kind of orgasmic experience. Purchase a variety of lubricants, including water-based and silicone and explore what you like best for oral sex, vaginal sex, and manual stimulation.

Get physical

It’s amazing what exercise can to do your overall health and well-being, including mood, stress and even sex life. Cardiovascular exercise before sex gets your blood flowing – and enhanced blood flow can lead to enhanced orgasm. Also, you’ll feel good about yourself for being active – being active increases self-esteem and body image and makes you a more confident sex partner.

Take care of your health

Research shows your sexual health impacts your overall well-being. In a recent Trojan™ survey, 87 per cent of women and men agreed that their sexual health contributes to their overall health and well-being. That means taking extra time for your health and well-being. Don’t feel guilty about taking time for yourself, to exercise, de-stress and meditate. The spa is calling you.

Cuddle a little longer

Though sex is relaxing enough to send us all to a blissful sleep, don’t nod off instead of sharing a few extra moments together. In a recent Trojan™ survey, individuals who reported over 20 minutes of post-sex affectionate behaviour were the most likely to report that their encounter was “very pleasurable.” And this was especially true for men! Cuddle in bed a little bit longer.

I love shopping at department stores, hunting through the sales racks first… of course! I love a bargain, especially when I find a designer piece on CLEARANCE. Cha-ching!

My fellow blogger friend Robin at Shop With Robin is eagerly anticipating the opening of Nordstrom in the Greater Toronto Area. The upscale Seattle-based retailer has revealed the opening dates for its first two Toronto stores, both scheduled to open in the fall of 2016.

But wait!

Robin has announced on her blog some more awesome news about Nordstrom – for even deeper savings…

Nordstrom Rack is coming to Toronto! The discount designer store sells clothing, shoes and accessories at 30 to 70 percent off.

Visit the Shop with Robin blog for all the details.

My sister-in-law had her baby shower recently, and seeing her pregnant brought back a flood of memories. Did my uterus ache? My ovaries go into overdrive? All the talk about babies made me think I want to have another baby.

Sure, can I have another? It sounds like I want having another baby like I want another chocolate bar! If only it were so simple.

I’m such a nostalgic person. I will stare at my children and flash back to the time when they were learning to walk or talk, and my eyes will well up with tears. I’ll cuddle with my boys and look at their not-so-tiny feet and remember playing This Piggy with their cute chubby baby toes. My son will hug me tightly and I’ll recall him squeezing my flabby belly which was his safe haven for the first few years of his life.

All of these little moments and memories come flooding back in an instant. I’ll be brought back to those wonderful times when I wasn’t pulling out my hair, and fully absorbing those special moments.

I knew after my second child that I was “done”. But there was always a little part of me that wanted to leave the door slightly open for the possibility. When my husband had his vasectomy, the door was firmly shut.

But like the craving for the chocolate bar, the desire to go for baby #3 fades away. Because in reality, my kids are older now and they are almost self-sufficient. I couldn’t imagine going through the newborn stage, months of sleepless nights, terrible twos threes and fours… My body probably wouldn’t take the physical challenges of pregnancy and post-partum again either.

Witnessing my two rambunctious sons who are involved in a constant battle of strength and will… basically it’s the two of them kicking the crap out of each other. The fighting is constant. The bickering reminds me of a scene in The Odd Couple. It’s always a question of who is farting on whose face, which son is headlocking the other, and who’s fault is it.

Can you imagine adding a third child – possibly a third BOY – into this mix? Nevermind boy, even a girl? She’d be destroyed. She’d either grow up to be the toughest girl, or I’d have to protect her from their harrassment.

Maybe sometimes I need to convince myself that my husband and I made the best decision. I know my heart has more love to offer, and if I were younger, I’d have another child. But my mind tells me I’m content with my family just the way it is.

Painting Furniture

How easy is it to paint furniture? It’s surprisingly easy, depending on the paint you use. Chalk Paint™ decorative paint by Annie Sloan doesn’t require any sanding or priming. It’s easy to use, quick to dry and can use the paint with a variety of paint techniques. It has a velvety, ultra matte finish and comes in an array of gorgeous colours.

I needed a new foyer table and knew that I would like to find a used piece to refinish. After some searching, I found this antique front hall table and decided to paint it in Old White.

Here is the before piece:

I have been gluten free for almost three years. I mostly eat dairy-free too because I am lactose-intolerant. I cook mostly using olive and grapeseed oil. While I do indulge in butter and cheese sometimes, I know I shouldn’t because these products upset my stomach. Some recipes don’t taste the same without butter, I know! But I have to substitute because it doesn’t help my health issues.

That’s why I was happy to hear that Becel® Original, Becel Buttery Taste, Becel with Olive Oil, and Becel Vegan margarine are now being made with simpler ingredients. That’s right – no artificial preservatives, flavours or colours, which means you can feel good about choosing Becel® margarine as part of your heart healthy lifestyle – and, in the case of Becel Vegan, a lactose-free lifestyle!

Especially for someone who is at risk for heart disease and cholesterol, cutting out saturated fats is important. The blend of sunflower and Canadian canola oil provides a source of good Omega 3 polyunsaturated fats that our bodies need. Becel® margarine contains no trans-fat and has 80% less saturated fat than butter, so you can easily replace butter 1:1 for margarine in any recipe as an alternative.

On Tuesday, I had the opportunity to meet author and health expert Rose Reisman along with MASTERCHEF star Chef Graham Elliot at the Blend Bar by Becel® at Loblaws, Maple Leaf Gardens. They were there to talk about and showcase Becel® margarine, made with a blend of plant and seed oils, to use for cooking and baking.

At the Blend Bar, the Master Blender showcased how plant and seed oils, like Becel’s Master Blend of sunflower and Canadian canola oil, are blended to create soft, non-hydrogenated margarine. Use it for cooking, baking, frying, sautéing and spreading.

Like a boss, Rose Reisman showed us how it’s done.

I LOVE apples and cinnamon, any time of the year. This gluten-free apple cinnamon loaf recipe is easy to make and will likely be consumed within the day.

Gluten-Free Apple Cinnamon Loaf

Ingredients

1 1/2 cup gluten-free flour (I use a mix of almond, sorghum, tapioca and brown rice flour) and a pinch of xantham gum
(if not gluten-free, you may substitute for regular flour)

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon salt

3/4 teaspoons baking soda

1/4 teaspoon baking powder

2/3 cups grapeseed oil

1 cup coconut palm sugar

1 teaspoons vanilla

2 eggs

1 1/2 cup chopped apples (peeled and cored)

1 cup chopped walnuts

Topping

3 tablespoons coconut palm sugar

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Gluten Free Apple Cinnamon Loaf

Method

Preheat oven to 350. In a bowl whisk together flour, cinnamon, salt, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside.

In a mixing bowl add oil, sugar, vanilla, and eggs and mix well. Slowly add flour mixture and mix until well combined. Stir in apples.

Pour batter into a greased and floured loaf pan (or parchment-lined). In a small bowl stir together brown sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle over batter.

Bake about 50 minutes or until tester inserted into the centre of the loaf comes out clean. Allow to cool 20 minutes in the pan before removing to cool on a wire rack.

Work, home life, kids, stress, family obligations… all of the responsibilities we have can leave mom feeling overwhelmed and under-appreciated. The daily grind doesn’t leave much time, energy and even desire for intimacy with your partner, does it. Yes I’m talking about sex and other things.

Anything can become an excuse to avoid sex! Why do many women experience a decreased libido? Is it just being tired? Not in the mood? I had the chance to chat with Dr. Jennifer Berman, leading expert on women’s sexual health issues and co-host of the Emmy® Award-winning talk show, The Doctors.

“There are many physical and medical reasons why women changes in their sexual libido,” says Dr. Berman.  “Along those lines, having babies, aging, and menopause are all risk factors to sexual dysfunction complaints along with stress urinary incontinence and urinary tract health go hand in hand.”

What can women do with less than active libido

There are several medical reasons that women experienced decreased libido. “If woman is experiencing pain or dryness can be an issue. No desire to have sex? There are neurochemical alterations that affect libido,” says Dr. Berman.

Some factors can include:

Relationship issues:  There may be a lack of emotional or physical satisfaction causing the less-than-active libido. The birth of a child can decrease sexual desire.

Work stress:  Stress related to work and finances can also negatively influence sexual desire.

Low testosterone:  Testosterone affects sexual drive in both men and women. Testosterone levels peak in women’s mid-20s and then steadily decline until menopause, when they drop dramatically.

Medications: Certain antidepressants, blood pressure medications, and oral contraceptives can lower sexual drive in many ways, such as decreasing available testosterone levels or affecting blood flow.

Medical issues: Medical conditions, such as endometriosis, fibroids, thyroid disorders, and depression can impact a woman’s sexual drive both mentally and physically.

Determining what is the cause is the first step and speaking to your healthcare provider to discuss treatment options.

Talking about Sex and Other Things

Stress urinary incontinence

Another reason some women may be embarrassed or afraid to have sex is urinary incontinence.  Yes, that lovely leakage that occurs when you cough, sneeze or jump, leaving you running for the bathroom. This condition affects one in four Canadian women at some point in their lives and of these, almost half (49%) suffer from SUI, meaning chances are your mom, aunt, sister, friend or someone you know does or has experienced it.

Sex and bladder leakage isn’t necessarily a fun topic to discuss, but many women experience these problems so we need to be discussing it. Women may experience self-esteem issues because of these bodily dysfunctions, but it happens and is more common that you think!

Other than women experiencing pain, dryness, and decreased libido, what are other risk factors? “Weight gain, smoking, diet, prior pelvic surgery, aging and having children adds to the risk factor for incontinence because the support structure to our bladder and urethra become thinner and weaker which leads to SUI,” says Dr. Berman.

Aren’t Kegels enough?

Kegels are effective if you’ve doing them from before, during and after pregnancy on a consistent basis. Women simply don’t do that. “By the time women reach their late 40s or early 50s, the strength of those muscles decline and the integrity of those muscles and tissues are compromised with aging,” Dr. Berman says.

Bladder support

Poise Impressa Bladder Supports are an alternative to surgery which is the only other option for SUI. It acts that the way a surgical sling would work supporting the urethra without surgery.

“It’s a temporary solution, but for women that are active and that can’t enjoy the activities that they’re used to, playing tennis, jogging or jumping on the trampoline with their kids,” says Dr. Berman. “It’s also over the counter. She can go to the store herself, size herself and basically treat herself for this condition.”

What people can do is talk about sexual health openly, and speak to their health care provider to discuss options.
