Perfect timing I thought.  I had just put the finishing touches on my lip gloss when the pickup truck pulled into my driveway.  My boyfriend was here to pick me up.

It was so cozy getting into the truck with the bench seat. I could snuggle up and he could drive one handed since his other arm was occupied around my shoulders.  The winter night was cold, but the blast of heat from the vent and the excitement of meeting my new boyfriend’s parents was making me forget my frost bitten toes.

We arrived in no time since we lived right around the corner from one another.  I got out of the truck and headed towards the front door of the house. We walked in together to see these very nice warm welcoming faces.  It wasn’t going to be so bad meeting the folks.

After the hello’s, I had my boyfriend give me a tour of the house.  It was a very homey environment with lots of family photos everywhere. The tour was almost done, with one last stop….the kitchen.

As I entered the heart of the family home I noticed that there were pictures of my boyfriend and his brother on the refrigerator, held there by magnets of their t ball and soccer photos. There was also artwork that had so lovingly been made with fingerprints and crafts tacked to the cupboard doors.  This would have been so cute if he hadn’t been 30!

It was at this exact moment that I realized I was indeed a “cougar”!  “What was I doing here,” I asked myself.  I had my own kids’ artwork on my fridge!

It had all become so clear; I was attempting to reclaim my youth by dating a much younger guy.  You must be wondering, “what exactly was the age difference”?

The answer to that question is eight years.  That may not seem much to some but the writing was on the wall in Crayola that it was indeed!

When you find yourself in the “dating game”, you know exactly what you don’t want, but now it’s discovery time to find out what you actually desire and need in a relationship. At first when I started dating the young cub, it was fun and exciting to get picked up and go to the movies, or listen to a band play in a local pub. But all of a sudden you realize that you have nothing in common except the fact that you both enjoyed the movie!

I do know that for some, the May to December relationship can work, but for me… I needed more. I have raised a family, owned homes, had careers and was already planning my retirement.  This guy hadn’t even moved out of his parents’ home yet!

The hardest part wasn’t just the realization that he was too young for me – it was going to be the breakup.  I hate it when bullies make my kids cry.  I didn’t want to be the bad guy. It was inevitable though – the more we were together, the more the visions of “Wally and the Beavers” memorabilia haunted me.  When that dreaded day of ripping off the proverbial Band-Aid arrived, I knew that I had made the right decision.

I so carefully chose the right version of “it’s not you, it’s me” and that’s when it happened… the temper tantrum! It was like I was back in 1982, and my cousin Stuart was throwing his annual Christmas fit!

Unkind words were spoken, and apparently “I’m not the Queen”! Dating a boy toy just isn’t as glamorous as Courtney Cox makes it look on “Cougartown”.   Perhaps if I lived in California, instead of a small town, and I had Botox, breast implants and white chicklet teeth it could have been my “normal”.

I will always be thankful for the six weeks of feeling of feeling young again, but even Molly Ringwald would have to play the role of “mom” in a remake of “Sixteen Candles”. It’s official that you can’t go back, only forward.

After having kids, what do you use for birth control?  Does mom go on the pill? IUD? Or does dad use condoms?  Get snipped?

I had tried a few options but I was honestly tired of putting more drugs into my body.  Condoms are not full proof either.

So what is the best birth control after kids? His turn!

I wanted to share my own husband’s thoughts on the matter.

He got the snip snip – yes, a vasectomy.

And he’s thrilled about it and thinks all men should do it too.

Why?

“I work all day, I can’t come home and do everything for a month while my wife recovers.”

What???  Can’t do everything for a month??? Dog house!

“It’s easier for the man than it is for the woman.  Women will be laid up in bed for a long day and men will end up having to do more around the house for a good month!  It was more for selfish reasons…”

Grrrr!  Time for a big ear-pull.

But before you judge and call him a jerk, my husband is a bit of  huge jokester.  He is really just kidding.

This is what he really means:

“For me, it’s only a 40-minute procedure, three days later and I’m fine.  Best thing I’ve ever done.

All you feel is a little bit of tugging and pulling. After I got up, I had to walk a little bit slower because it was a touch sensitive. When I got home, I iced my private areas with a frozen bag of peas – it really works because it contours everything, if you know what I mean.

I had to wear tight Jockey’s because if you don’t, it’ll feel like you have a bad toothache.

I took one day off work and by the third day, I was shovelling the snow.

It’s the least I could do since I’ve seen her vagina stretch 10 cm.”

Ba-doom-boom.

Yep.

There you have it.

All the talk about SOPA on social media sites and the blackouts are working.

Eight sponsors of the SOPA and PIPA antipiracy bills have publicly withdrawn their support today (earlier today that number was three).

Today, Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (PIPA) are making headlines as websites have blacked out to protest against the proposed bills.

Wikipedia was among several websites that shut down Wednesday in protest of anti-piracy bills now in Congress that critics say could result in censorship.

“End Piracy”, “Not Liberty” and “Stop Online Piracy Act” are all trending topics on Twitter January 18th, the day of the blackout.

Here is a good article explaining what SOPA is:

What were the best books of 2011?  So many good reads but I’ve listed the 6 best books of 2011.

Here are my favorite reads from 2011:

The Virgin Cure by Ami McKay

When she was young, Moth’s father walked out the door.  When she became a teenager her mother sold her as a servant to a wealthy woman in 1871.

The betrayals led Moth to Bowery, filled with thieves and prostitutes. She meets Miss Everett, the owner of a brothel known as “The Infant School.” Miss Everett caters to gentlemen who pay big bucks for clean companions, especially for young virgins like Moth. Her new friends fall prey to the myth of the ‘Virgin Cure’- that deflowering can heal the incurable and tainted. She knows the law won’t protect her, society ignores her, and still she dreams of independence.

Written by the author of The Birth House, Ami tells another compelling tale from the past.

Girls in White Dresses by Jennifer Close

Isabella, Mary and Lauren feel like everyone they know is getting married but them. Amid the cooing over the toasters, wearing pastel dresses and drinking champagne they have their own lives to contend with.

With a wry wit, Jennifer brings us through the confusing years of early adulthood.  During boozy family holidays, disaster ski vacations, and a relationship fading to politics, Girls in White Dresses goes deep into important friendships. I saw one of my own friendships in the characters.

11/22/63 by Stephen King

Jake Epping is an English teacher in Lisbon Falls, Maine. He makes extra money teaching GED classes. When he assigns his students to write about an event that changed their lives, one stuns him about a gory story of when a student’s dad came home and killed his mother and siblings with a sledgehammer. Jake gets a call from  his friend, Al, who divulges a secret that his storeroom in the diner is a portal to the past, a specific day in 1958. It is Al’s obsession that convinces Jake to go through the portal to prevent the Kennedy assaination.

Time travel has never been so believable in this tale from the Master of Horror.

Half Blood Blues by Esi Edugvan

In 1940 during the aftermath of the fall of Paris, Hieronymous Falk, a rising cabaret star, is arrested in a café and never heard from again. He is twenty years old, a German Citizen and black. The only witness to that day is going back to Berlin fifty years later. He knows he must face to find out what happened to the star.

Giller Prize winning Half Blood Blues tells the depths of horror and the burden of loyalty, and if you don’t tell your story, someone else might tell it for you. And they just might tell it wrong.

Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson

Based on more than forty interviews with Jobs conducted over two years, and with interviews from more than a hundred family members, friends, adversaries, competitors, and colleagues; Walter Isaacson has written the story of the intense personality of the entrepreneur whose ferocious drive revolutionized six industries. Jobs knew that the best way to create value in the twenty-first century was to connect creativity with technology. Yes, he even talks about Bill Gates openly.

Jobs asked for no control over what was written, or even the right to read it before it was published. His friends, foes, and colleagues provide an unvarnished view of the passions, perfectionism, obsessions and compulsion for control that shaped his approach to business, and the innovative products that resulted.

Falling Backwards by Jann Arden

“I survived the stupidity of my youth.” This quote from Jann’s brutally honest memoir had me captivated. I was already a fan of her soulful melodies, however, reading her rise to fame made me want to buy her a beverage of her choice just to hear more.

From her small town childhood to busking in her early 20s in Vancouver, BC, and to why she does not have children, brought me to the reason why she calls her parents are treasures.  Her folks live across the street from her today. Follow her on Twitter for more Jann fun.

Danielle Christopher is a stay-at-home mom of two daughters, ages one and three.  She blogs for The Momoir Project and writes book reviews for Women’s Post.  Her teen story is in the collection “Parent/Teen Stories: Without Judgement”.  She lives with her husband of seventeen years and her girls in Langley, B.C..   Follow her on Twitter.

Just recently, I shared my thoughts on a new iced coffee that hit the store shelves (in your dairy cases) on January 15th ~ International Delight Iced Coffee.

What I liked about the #IcedCoffee is that it’s ready to drink – add some ice to a glass and pour the International Delight Iced Coffee over it and voila.

Along with participating in this campaign, I was given the opportunity to share the same wonderful products with a fellow blogger for #CBias.

So I surprised Natalie Green of Mommy Boots with the gift of International Delight Iced Coffee.  I didn’t even know Natalie at the time so receiving the coffees would have been a complete surprise to her… which is something that is fun to be a part of.

Natalie is 28 and lives in Tennessee with her husband and daughter.  By catching up on her blog, I discovered that she recently lost her mother.

I hope this surprise and the coffee will give her a little sunshine during this difficult time.

international coffee delight

International Delights Iced Coffee comes in 3 delicious flavors: Original, Mocha and Vanilla and is available now at your local Walmart.

International Delight’s Iced Coffees are available in Walmart and Sam’s Club stores dairy section as of January 15th, 2012.

Something I never thought I’d do by Dianne Preston

I did something for Christmas this year that I never thought I would again – I had my ex-husband over for dinner.

Over the past couple of months, we have been in touch again after three or more years of no contact. We’ve been divorced now for seven years.

I admit – it has been bothering me for about the last year that we haven’t been able to converse at all – even for my son’s sake. I’ve gone to pick up the phone many times to reach out… but I just couldn’t do it.

So I was glad back in November when he made the first move and called to ask me a question. He left a message which took me awhile to return.

When we did talk finally, it seemed like old times. When you’ve been with someone for 30 years, there really isn’t anyone on earth that knows you better. We caught up on a lot of things and I felt a relief knowing we could now speak civilly.

He called again a few days before Christmas to see if I could help him with ideas for our son’s girlfriend. He has always been a great gift giver, putting extra thought into it.

I asked what he was doing for Christmas dinner. “Oh, no big deal, might go to Craig’s.” Knowing him like I do, I knew this meant he wasn’t going anywhere.

Here’s my problem… I have way too damn big of a heart and could never see anyone alone on Christmas. So I called my son and asked what he would think of his Dad coming for dinner. It was great with him if it was alright with me.

So I called him back and invited him and he accepted! Whoa… now what!?

Have to admit it was a wee bit nerve wracking – again, I haven’t even laid eyes on him in a few years!

He arrived the same time as my son and when they all walked in together – it was weird and nice at the same time. We hugged and kissed automatically and the rest of the day proceeded the same way – normal?

If there’s one thing my ex did, just about every day of our marriage, was make me laugh. Christmas day was no exception – he has a wicked sense of humour and we all had SO many chuckles!

We had a lovely gift exchange with the “kids”.  My biggest smile of the day came from knowing that – it doesn’t matter that my son just turned *gulp* 28 on Jan 2nd – it thrilled my son to have us altogether! Dinner turned out perfect and so did the remainder of the evening.

I keep saying to my friends that there are no ‘feelings’ there anymore’ he’s still who he is BUT I’m really glad we’re at this point now – for my son’s sake, and ours too.

I still can’t get over how normal and comfortable it all was.  I guess it is possible to go from having a marriage to just a friendship again – I guess it just took me seven years.  Better late than never.
