How often do you eat fish? I enjoyed plenty this past summer in Prince Edward Island, North Carolina and of course, in Greece. The Meditteranean diet has garnered a lot of attention because of its heart-healthy diet high in vegetables, legumes, fruits, nuts, olive oil and fish.

Most Canadians don’t eat enough fish. Health Canada recommends two 75-gram servings per week, but on average, we fall short. We could be doing more for our hearts and our overall health by making an effort to eat more fish and seafood at home.

Did you know that the Japanese have half as many heart attacks as North Americans? On average, they eat 100 grams of fish per day, according to a study in the July 2008 Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

So how can we add more fish to our weekly menu?

The Sobeys Seafood Steamer is a great meal option for those busy weeknights, and is a simple, no-fuss solution to help us eat more fresh seafood at home. It’s a convenient, new take on the classic French cooking method en papillote, where fish is steamed in a parchment paper pouch.

All you do is choose your favourite fish or seafood, and the accompanying seasoned butter at the Sobeys Seafood Counter. Sobeys has a variety of fish, including fresh wild halibut, haddock, perch, cod, sea Bass, rainbow trout, salmon, mussels, scallops, and more.

Customers select their fish or seafood from the Sobeys’ Seafood Service Counter, and handpick one of three seasoned butter pats: Lemon and Dill, Garlic and Parsley or Salted.

A Sobeys’ seafood expert will prepare the fish (I ask them to remove the skin when possible), and seal the fish in an oven-safe, ready-to-cook bag to take home. It’s convenient because I don’t have to even touch the fish – I can simply put the bag right into the oven when I get home.

You have the option of cooking in the microwave too. The counter will provide you with a cheat sheet with instructions on how to cook your fish at home. Then, just worry about making a side dish to go with your seafood. Most cuts of fish take about 20-25 minutes to cook in the oven, so dinner can be on the table in a half an hour!

First, I tried a fillet of Haddock with lemon and dill. It was delicious! While haddock is supposed to be a bit more fishy-tasting, the lemon and dill was a delicious compliment to its taste.

Then, I had to have a hearty piece of Halibut, my favourite fish and on the pricier side. I tried this one with garlic and parsley – it was equally delicious! But I do think the lemon and dill butter is my favourite flavour.

We’re not seafood eaters in our house, which is totally insane because we live in New England – the seafood capitol of the world 🙂

  3. This is a great idea! I love fish, and we need to eat more of it, but being in a landlocked state makes it difficult. Fresh is very hard to come by and expensive!

  7. We love to eat fish at least once a week. Salmon is our favorite, and our boys have always enjoyed it. It is great to take notes from other cultures to learn about different proteins we should try.

  9. Seafood is big in my house and we have it in some form at least twice a week. I think this has to be on the dinner list.

  10. My family loves seafood, however, it is only me and my hubby who love fish. The kids would eat any kind, except fish. (kinda weird, right?).When I make fish for me and the hubby, it is more often than not, steamed fish fillets. It is healthier and keeps the fish moist and flavorful.

  11. My son and his wife are seafood lovers. Fish makes them very happy. 🙂

  12. I love seafood and yet I know we don’t eat enough of it at home. Mostly because it seems like a lot preparation. I love that Sobeys seafood comes skinned and prepackaged, ready to go right into the oven. That definitely makes a difference for me!

  13. That looks delicious. I love fish and I want that steamer. Lemon, butter and dill are the best for steamed fish.

  14. We love seafood so I’m going to check out this brand now. We are lucky enough to live in NC so fresh seafood is possible but we could be moving to Philly soon. Thanks for sharing.
