Viggo Mortensen probably had the best moment when he won for Best Supporting Actor for David Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method.  He showed his true patriot love when he held up a flag for his favourite hockey team, the Montreal Canadiens.

Mortensen and Cronenberg walked the red carpet at the 32nd annual Genie Awards, and cracked a few jokes to reporters. “Making a film is like a team sport; we do the best we can with the abilities we have,” Viggo says.

“The good guys that I try to cast turned me down and he was the only one that would do it, and he was cheap,” Cronenberg joked about Mortensen.

Cronenberg has been making successful film after film – what is his secret?

“Consistency and really there is a truth in that, to have a long enough career that you can show what you can do.  Unfortunately there a lot of filmmakers that show a lot of promise and then they disappear.  If there is anything that I would leave a legacy for other Canadians is that you have to slug it out, every year is a struggle.”

After Mortensen won his Genie award for Supporting Actor, he only had good things to say about Cronenberg.

“Cronenberg makes something very difficult look very easy – he’s very rare and when you see his movies a second or third time, you see more.”

“Cronenberg is very meticulous, very rare in this business to have that quality guaranteed.  He definitely is his own filmmaker.  The New Zealand crew on Lord of the Rings I found very similar to the Canadian crew in that they take very seriously what they do.  They take pride in the job they’re doing, but they don’t take themselves too seriously,” Mortensen says.

“I have to say, with all due respect, now that I’ve seen the Genie award show, it’s very relaxed, it doesn’t seem pretentious or tense.  I like working in that way on movie sets, you can talk to anybody, nobody is above anybody.  David inspires that way of working.”

Cronenberg and Mortensen have forged a close bond with Mortensen calling him a good friend. They’ve now worked together on three films – Eastern Promises and A History of Violence and now A Dangerous Method.
